The scent of pine and rain clung to the evening air as Zara stood at the edge of the Moonstone Pack’s gathering grounds with her hands clenched into fists. Her heart pounded, though not with fear—no, she had long since stopped fearing rejection.
She already knew how this night would end. Before her, Alpha Kieran stood tall, his golden eyes flickering with unease. His fingers twitched at his sides, and Zara could see the battle waging within him. His wolf wanted her, called to her, but the man—the Alpha—was resisting. “I can’t,” he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I reject you, Zara Grey, as my mate.” The words settled like a weight in the pit of her stomach. A dull ache spread through her chest, the familiar sting of a rejected bond. But she didn’t flinch. She didn’t beg. She didn’t even cry. Instead, she exhaled slowly and met his gaze with cold, unreadable eyes. “I accept your rejection.” Gasps rippled through the gathered wolves, but Zara turned on her heel and walked away before she could see their pitying stares. She had been through this five times before. Six now. She had lost count of how many times she’d been told she wasn’t good enough. That she was cursed. That something was wrong with her. Six mates. Six rejections. The moon hung high above the trees as she made her way back to the Beta Quarters, where she lived with her best friend, despite being second-in-command of her pack’s warriors. Her fingers trembled as she pushed open the door to her small cabin. She hadn’t taken more than two steps inside when a sharp knock echoed against the wooden frame. "Who is it?!" There wasn't a single trace of emotion in her voice. "It's me, Denice. You've locked the door.." Zara turned back around and made her slowly to the door, dragging her feets across the floor as she made heavy strides. Denice immediately sensed the tension in the air the moment the door was opened. Without asking any further questions, she wrapped her arms around Zara and pulled her into a wadm embrace. "It's okay, you don't need to tell me how this one went." Denice mouthed. "It's the curse again isn't it, I know you wouldn't want to tell me the truth, but the curse is the reason he rejected me, isn't it?!" Zara slapped her palm across her face, holding back the tears that threatened to cascade down her cheeks and slowly pulled away from Denice. "You have to take easy on yourself, Zara. This isn't your fault, remember we are still trying to find a way around this...." Her best friend, Denice wrapped her arms around Zara and tried to console her, while she soaked her dress with her hot tears. "For how long is it going to take, how long are we going to keep on finding a way around this?!" Zara screamed at the top of her lungs. She was finding it hard to take in air at this point, The air felt contaminated and it held her at a choke hold. "Take it easy on yourself, Zara, it realised isn't your fault." Denice said again and kept holding her as she wept. "Do you need me to get you anything to eat or drink?" She asked her. "No, I do not want to eat anything. I'm going to be fine." Zara wiped her face and suddenly went to the door. "I'm about to head out, I'll be back in the morning." She said in a low tone while placing her hand on the handle of the door. "Tomorrow morning? Where are you going to?!" Denice asked in shock. "Just going for a stroll...I'm going to calm my wolf.." she informed her. "Hold on, let me grab my coat, I'm going to come with you." Denice said, spinning around immediately to search for her coat. "There is no need to, Denice. I'm going to be fine, besides, I need a moment alone to put my thoughts together." She paused and then as if she were trying to recollect something, she lifted her gaze to the ceiling. "If I don't return home tomorrow morning, you know where to start looking." And with that, she went out of the house without anything on her and closed the door with a loud bang. "Zara, wait!" Denice tried to call out but she was already gone. Her face fell with agony. Never had she encountered any wolf, even while growing up that was going through as much pain as Zara was. She had a pure heart and should never be put through this kind of hurt. Being rejected six time in a row all because of the rumoured curse surrounding her. Denice had been with her for more than a decade and had never witnessed this curse herself manifesting in Zara. Nothing extraordinary ever happened while she was ever around Zara and it was all a mere myth that the pack had cooked up, but still, there was a reason for contemplation. Neither of the women could actually tell what Zara kept getting rejected by her mates. Denice thought her previous mates weren't wolf enough to handle her, because she was the best Warrior in their pack but Zara still believed that they could sense her curse and immediately flee without return. The cold air stung to Zara's face, drying off the remaining tears that dropped eagerly from her eyes. Zara’s wolf stirred inside her, alerting her about the environment she was in, she had strayed too far away from safety. Her instincts screamed at her to be cautious, but she squared her shoulders and continued walking with her hands shoved in her pocket. When suddenly, she caught a towering figure stood in the shadows, shrouded in darkness. She spun around and Instantly felt him. His presence was suffocating, his power pressing down on her like a storm about to break. The moonlight caught his face, revealing obsidian-black eyes that seemed to look straight into her soul. She knew who he was before he even spoke. It was Kael Draven. The Lycan King. The most feared ruler of their kind. “Zara Grey,” he said, his voice deep and smooth as a blade sliding from its sheath. “You are mine."Nobody moved. The tremor had stopped, but the word settled over the city. Cracks had appeared in the stone beneath their feet, a few rocks tumbled from the cliffs surrounding the northern gate, it echoed loudly in the air. Everyone looked toward the mountain."It wasn't an earthquake," Selene said quietly. One of her captains frowned."You can never be sure you know?"She didn't take her eyes off the mountain."Because earthquakes don't just happen once."As if to prove her right, everything remained still, not even a vibration.Kael reached down and picked up the wooden box the Watcher had left behind, he turned it over in his hands studying the carvings."There's writing."Zara stepped beside him.*Hidden beneath the lid, almost impossible to notice, were several tiny symbols carved into the wood.*Zara couldn't recognize the language, it was written in a language she didn't understand.Selene's face immediately changed."I've seen those before.""Where?" Zara asked."The oldest pa
Zara stared at the letter, her hands trembled so badly that she almost dropped the letter into the snow. For a long moment, she couldn't bring herself to read the again again, it wasn't possible. Her grandmother had died fifteen years ago, that was what she believed all this while. She still remembered standing beside the small grave with dirt under her fingernails because she'd insisted on helping. She remembered the rain that refused to stop falling. She remembered wondering why the world could keep moving when hers had just ended. So how... How was she holding a letter written for this exact moment? "Zara." Kael's voice was gentle. "Come back inside." She shook her head. "I need to read it." The Watcher hadn't moved, it just stood there, its eyes fixed directly on Zara. Zara unfolded the rest of the letter. * * * * * * "My dearest Zara, If you're reading this, then I have failed. I prayed you would never have to carry what our family has carried. I prayed I could tak
The city bells rang without stopping one after another. The sound rolled through the streets, bouncing off stone walls until it became one long, dreadful echo.Zara had heard bells for celebrations, she had heard them for attacks, she had heard them when a child wandered too close to the forest but this sounded different. She and Kael followed Selene out of the archives almost at a run, Rynese and Valkyrie were close behind them. The streets were already in chaos, parents hurried with their children inside, guards gave orders panicking."Where are they?" Kael asked."The north road." Selene answered."How many are they?"Selene hesitated."...One."Rynese blinked."One?""So, you rang every bell in the city because of one person?" He asked amused.Selene didn't answer him, she didn't have to because the look on her face was already enough.* * * * * The northern gate was surrounded by warriors, rows upon rows of them. Vampire soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder with their weapons dra
For several seconds, Zara couldn't move. The necklace was just laid in her palms, she traced the crescent moon with her thumb. It was clear that it belonged to her grandmother. When Zara was little, Evelyn Grey never took it off. She wore it while baking, while tending the garden, even while teaching Zara how to braid her hair. Zara had asked countless times why it was so special. Her grandmother had only smiled."Some things are inherited before we're old enough to understand them."At the time, Zara had thought she was talking about the necklace, now she wasn't so sure."Zara?"Kael's voice pulled her back from her thoughts He was standing a few feet away, watching her, she slowly stood and held the necklace out to him."I know this necklace." She said, her hands were stretched out to him."You've seen it before?" He frowned."It belonged to my grandmother."Those words made everyone go quiet. Selene stepped closer."May I?" She said.Zara hesitated before placing the pendant in he
The guard's words echoed in the room, nobody spoke for what seemed like minutes "The northern gate just opened."Nobody moved. Then Kael was already outside, Zara grabbed her sword from where it leaned against the wall and hurried after him. Rynese stumbled out of the room across the hall, still trying to pull on his coat."I swear," he muttered, "one peaceful morning. That's all I've ever asked for."Valkyrie walked past him without slowing down."You chose the wrong kingdom."* * * * * The northern gate was the largest entrance into Belmar territory built into the side of the mountain itself, it was less a gate and more a fortress of black stone. Thick iron doors, each taller than three wolves standing on each other's backs, had remained sealed for generations. No one could open them.Everything beyond them had long been abandoned.By the time Zara reached the walls, dozens of guards had already gathered there, some so them stood with their weapons already drawn, others simply jus
The room became silent. Those words ranged in their heads.*Send Zara Grey and come alone.*Zara stared at the parchment lying on the table. For a moment, she could only hear the sounds of the wind in the air, nobody spoke, there were no voices, no jokes, no arguments, no bells ringing... Just pure silence. Then Rynese broke the silence."Well....." He said Everyone looked at him."That's definitely a no."The tension in the room became lesser.Selene folded her arms."It wasn't a request.""No, it was a demand," Valkyrie said. "Which is why it's definitely a no."Kael didn't say anything, Zara looked at him. Immediately, she regretted it. The expression on his face was a bit terrifying because he looked too calm for what was going on. His silver eyes remained fixed on the note."Kael." Zara called out.He didn't answer."Kael." She called out again.Slowly, his gaze shifted to hers."What?"That single word came out as though he had not intended it at her but for the situation. Zara
The weather was in between morning and midday, Zara couldn't exactly tell which it was but the wind was strong. At a point it was cold, and next the wind was almost blowing her off then the snow fell on tress. Then enough snow that Rynese could barely see Valyrie walking towards her, it was imposs
Lucian hadn't slept in three days the last he could remember, at some point he'd closed his eyes while sitting in a chair and apparently lost consciousness for about an hour, whether that counted as sleep or not was debatable. He could feel his head hurt, his shoulders too then his ribs. There was

Zara woke up before sunrise freezing from the cold, the North was colder than she'd thought. The air was cold, even the ground itself was cold. She tried moving but Kael’s arms were wrapped around her waist, she remembered last night's kiss and immediately laid down back recalling all the memories
