No one might had known Anika had cried all night. She always raised her head up high and smiled through it all.
"You're basically Cinderella at this point," Anika's friend Anna said to her. Anika had just finished the laundry. "Exactly. Because I'm married to my prince charming," she smiled, throwing in the last batch of dirty underwear to the washing machine. "You know there are maids in this house." Anna pointed out. "No, Desiree has fired them all last week." Her friend looked shocked,"what? She finally chased them away? That bitch." "Hey, keep it down. We don't want them hearing." "They're not at home. It's your wedding anniversary and you're here doing the laundry. It's not fair!" "What's not fair?" Lark, Anika's husband, walked in. Tall and handsome, with a charming smile. "You talk like we're evil. Anika specifically says she wants to do it herself." Anika winced. "No I did not," she heaved in a deep sigh. "I'm only doing your laundry now because you like me doing it. And your sister, Tori, added some to the piles." "Yea, what's that all about? Is Tori living with you now?" Anna asked. "Anna, could you please excuse us for a minute?" Anika asked her friend with a polite smile. "Thanks." She turned to face Lark, who was now glaring at her with arched brows. "Okay? What was that all about?" Anika was forced to squint a frown. "Sorry?" "How can you tell your friend about us? Like babe, it's personal. You're making it seem like we're forcing you to do laundry now. You love doing our laundry." "What?" It came out as a soft sigh. "No I don't. You fired all of the staff." "We're cutting costs. You know my mother said that we should." "Listen, are they living with us now?" He shook his head, "I'm disappointed in you right now. How dare you talk bad about my family like that? We saved your life. You were nothing when we took you in." If Anika had a dollar for every time he and his family always brought that up, heck, she could have been able to afford a private jet by now. She was not going to fight. "Of course. And I am grateful, very grateful." "Then what is it? I feel like you're about to ask me money for that dumb woman in the hospital." Her face suddenly hardened. "Stop, how can you say that?" Lark snorted. "I've told you. We're too poor to waste money like that." "Waste mo--" She couldn't take it anymore. Was her tone starting to get rude? "No babe, honey why would you even say that? It's aunt Mary we're talking about. She's so nice, and she's been like family." Lark had heard this conversation a million times. "Look, she needs around four thousand grand for this operation. We don't have that money right now. We're trying to hit ten million dollars so that my mother can throw the best fiftieth birthday party in the whole history." Ten million! "Listen to yourself, honey? And we can't whip a simple 4k gran?" She rushed forward to him, holding his hands in hers. "Honey, it would really mean the world to me. It's nothing too serious, she just needs to get this operation done in under a week. I dunno, the doctors said it could worsen after then. And by then, we'll be spending triple this amount." Lark barked a scoff. "She's like what? Forty years old? She's old enough." "Don't say that about her!" Anika warned, snatching her hand away from his. She softened her voice again, "Babe, I'll work hard and pay Desiree back. Can't you just try to talk to her for me? Her party isn't until like, 3 months?" "3 months is here already—You know what? Why don't you ask her yourself? That's a good idea." Anika sighed. "I already have!" "Then do it again. Do it properly. Get on your knees." On her knees? "Well, I guess you're right. I will." "Good for you..." "...soaked in paint. I laughed so hard," Desiree's voice could be heard from outside. "Oh great, she's back. Go ask her." He held her hand, leading her to the living room. "Let's go," Desiree sat down next to her daughter, Tori. At the opposite end, Anna was seated too. "Ah it's great everyone is together!" Anika could feel her heart beating so fast, but she would give this another shot. Sure Desiree would be mature enough not to wish a poor innocent woman death? "Desiree, Tori, I'd like to once—" "—ta ta ta ta!" Lark shook his head and flashed her a slight angry look. Right. She had to... Anika forced a smile, "I respect you so so much," even though Tori was at least four years younger than her. Anika heaved in a deep sigh, then fell to her knees. Anna gasped out. "What are you doing?" "Please, I owe you all my life. Without you, I don't know what I would have become. I'll repay you all some day, I swear it. But right now, aunt Mary needs our help. I'm begging you to help, please." "How much money does she need again?" Tori asked. Excitedly, Anika responded. "Four thousand dollars. I've been saving but I don't have up to that. And I know Lark would have helped me, but ever since he quit his job—" "I told you she'd fall to her knees!" Lark roared out a laughter. Tori said, whining, "aww damn it. I owe you a hundred bucks." "Yea you do, baby!" Lark said proudly. "Alright children. You know, that kinda cheered me up a bit, son." Desiree said. "You're welcome, mi lady. This is why I'm your favorite child." "Hey! I'm her favorite child." Anika just knelt down there, shocked at the scene playing before her. Tears had gathered her eyes and filled it. "Um, as I was saying, please Desiree—" "—honey, help me with that glass of water on the table." The older woman said. Anika nodded, "of course," then dragged her knees on the ground till she reached for the table. She passed the glass to Desiree and continued. "As I was saying, I—" But was cut short when Desiree took the glass of water and splashed it all over her face. The wedding reception was buzzing with music and loud laughter. At the front VIP table, several guests looking all wealthy, gathered their heads together bragging about their latest success. "My son just secured a real estate partnership abroad," an older businessman boasted, swirling his drink. "Millions on the table before the quarter even ends."A woman in a silk dress nodded, eager to jump in. "That's nothing compared to my daughter. She was just featured in the global fashion registry last night. The praise she's getting is incredible."Desiree Gold took a slow sip from her glass, waiting for the perfect moment before she chirped in. "Oh, those are lovely achievements," she said smoothly, capturing the attention of the table. "I guess I can talk about my sweet Tori over here.” She said, smiling proudly. A lady said out loud, “Oh come on. What great news have you got to say now? The Golds are always celebrating hehe!” She giggled and everyone laughed with her.Desiree said at la
Across the elegant hallway, inside Christopher’s apartment, the morning sun was doing nothing to cure Casey’s splitting headache. She groaned loudly, pressing a cold ice pack against her temple as she slumped on the kitchen island. The front door clicked open and Lara walked in. Still dressed in her crisp, high-end private nurse uniform, looking a bit tired after finishing her long night shift at the VIP wing. She took off her coat, her sharp eyes scanning the messy apartment before locking onto the miserable girl."Where is your brother?" Lara asked, her voice calm and professional as she set her medical bag on the counter.Casey just let out a heavy groan, burying her face into her arms. "Check the next apartment. He’s probably with Anika."Lara paused, her brow furrowing. "Who is that?""Our neighbor," Casey muttered into her sleeve, too tired to explain.Lara's mind instantly flashed back to yesterday afternoon. She remembered the lady who had barged in carrying a container of por
Anika walked a few steps away, her stomach tightening as she pressed the phone to her ear. Tobey was usually blunt and unsmiling, and she was bracing herself for a sharp lecture."Tobey?" she whispered, keeping her voice low."Where did you disappear to yesterday?" Tobey’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and direct. "You just ran out after that scene."Anika cleared her throat, forcing her tone to sound weak so he could believe her. "I... I wasn't feeling too well. It was an emergency, so I had to leave early."There was a brief pause on the other end. "Don't worry about it," Tobey said, his tone surprisingly calm. "We defended your name in front of Selena yesterday anyway. Everyone was trying to make a huge deal out of your absence, but the team shut it down. Just rest up this weekend."Anika blinked at first, then her face brightened. A wave of pride washed over her, making her smile. Hearing that her new team had her back made her feel genuinely proud of herself."Thank you,
"How is he?" Anika asked quietly, breaking the silence as she stared to the center table. "Little Ryan?"Christopher opened his eyes, turning his head to look at her profile. A bright smile softened his features. "He's good. The kid is practically running around now. The treatment is working faster than we expected."Anika's face brightened, a look of relief washing over her features. For the first time all day, her classy front entirely disappeared, replaced by genuine happiness. "Wow... I'm so glad to hear that. He really deserves to be healthy.""Do you want to meet with him?" Christopher asked, his voice soft as he watched the gentle curve of her lips. "I can arrange a meeting at the private wing this weekend. He keeps asking about the pretty lady who told him those fun stories."Anika turned to face him, her eyes shining. "Really? I'd love to.""It's easy to set up," Christopher said. "He's Lara's nephew, so she handles his daily visitation logs anyway."Anika’s smile instantly f
Christopher groaned, leaning his head back against the cushion. "I would rather have coffee. I've missed it so much today." Anika paused on her way to the kitchen, frowning over her shoulder at him. "You had coffee just yesterday." She waited because she thought she had heard him wrong. Stay over? "I know," Christopher sighed. "But it's been twenty-four hours already. I’m running low on my energy source." Anika stopped, turning to face him now. With her hands planted on her waist, she couldn't help but shake her head at him. “The terrifying, multi-billionaire Chairman of Vanguard is secretly a hopeless coffee addict who couldn't survive a single day without a caffeine fix.” She then ignored his begging, walked into the kitchen, and prepared the dark, herbal tea the restaurant owner had given her. She walked back and handed the warm mug to him. Christopher took it with a frown, sipping the bitter liquid while Anika sat down opposite to him. Slowly, the playful atmosphere in the l
A gorgeous young woman in a tailored, fitted nurse’s uniform was standing by the living room counter, organizing a tray of medical supplies. She had perfect makeup, sharp features, and a highly confident aura.Anika froze, her brow furrowing as she stared at her. "Huh? Who is this?"The woman turned around, her eyes scanning Anika from head to toe with a cool, professional gaze. “Oh hello. Are you the delivery person?”Anika blinked. She looked at herself from up to her feet…how did she looked like a delivery person in her smart outfit? She wasn't wearing any uniform?“No, I came by to drop this.” She stretched forward the porridge to her. “Where's Christopher? And Casey too?” Anika made sure her voice was still firm. She did not want to feel any low self esteem standing next to this lady.“He's resting and I don't want him to be disturbed. And Casey is…busy. I'll feed him the porridge so don't worry.” She said, about to take the porridge from her hand. She looked around and saw two
Anika got home that evening to find a lady waiting for her at the entrance. A beautiful petite lady with big, bright eyes. A frown appeared on her face immediately. She instantly stepped forward and demanded who the lady was and how she'd been able to enter. "Hello, I'm Casey! I've been waiting f
Lark stormed after Anika. “Wait up.”With her quick steps, she was already standing outside by now. There was the same sleek SUV parked outside waiting for her. Lark frowned, his brows arching. “So this is it? You’re just going to leave me for some rich guy? After everything we’ve done for you. You
Anika just rolled her eyes. “You’re one of her minions.” This lady was none other than Jackie Richman, a proud friend of Tori. They would always bully her, but she kept quiet most of the time. The last time Jackie and Anika had met, things had ended in a real mess, with Jackie and Tori physically a
After tea time was over, Anika and Anna had to head back to the office. Cassandra was with them, talking about something Anika had lost interest in.She was too occupied with meeting Shawn. Carlos said under an hour’s time…around 45 minutes left now.She sat down and stared at her computer. Nothing
