Rhett

Savannah is already fast asleep beside me, snoring softly as she’s snuggled deep under the covers. The room is completely dark, save for the pale moonlight filtering through the window. I stare at the ceiling, my mind running in a million different directions aa it feels impossible to sleep despite the fact that I am exhausted. It’s even more difficult because I am trying not to turn around too much so as not to wake Savanah.

When I can’t hold the position I am in any longer and I turn my head to find a better position, my eyes travel toward the floor and catch a glimpse of her jacket on the rug. Suddenly I remember the way she had quickly slid that little object into her cloth pocket when she thought I wasn’t looking.

Very quietly, I slip out from the bed, making sure the mattress doesn't move or make a single sound. Savannah doesn't even stir. She just shifts slightly and continues sleeping.

I tiptoe across the floor until I am kneeling right next to the jacket, my heart puding a little too fast against my ribs as I reach out and slide my hand into the right pocket.

Theres nothing.

I frown, switching to the left one. My fingers brush against some old lint and a small piece of candy wrap, but that’s it. There is absolutely nothing inside. I check the inner linings, feeling all over it, but it is completely empty.

I let out a breath, running a hand through my hair. I feel relieved that there was nothing suspicious, an my guess is that I really was just being paranoid. The constant stress from my dad, the hockey team, and Cassian must be finally getting to me, making me see things that aren’t even there. I shake my head at my own stupidity, drop the jacket back onto the rug, and climb back into bed.

I close my eyes, trying to force my body to relax and finally get some sleep.

But sleep doesn't come.

About twenty minutes pass, and just as I am finally starting to drift off, I hear a strange sound of something creaking.

I freeze instantly, my eyes snapping open becayse I knkw fkt certain someone is stepping on one of the loose floorboards somewhere down the hallway. I hold my breath, listening intently, hoping it’s just the house settling in the cold night air even though ng gut tells me other wise.

Then, there’s a scratching sound against the outer wall, Makw ng my blood turns cold. That isn’t the house settling, it is the distinct sound of something, or someone, moving right outside.

Panic surges through me as We are deep in the woods, miles away from campus, and my father's warnings about rival territories immediately flash in my mind.

I glance at Savannah, but she is still out cold. I can’t risk waking her up and causing a scene if there really is an intruder out there.

Slowly and cautiously, I get out of bed again and look around the dark bedroom, searching for something I can use to defend myself. My eyes land on a metal flashlight sitting on the nightstand. It’s not much, but it’s hard enough to do some damage if I need to swing it.

I grab it ss I slip out of the bedroom and walk down the dark hallway.

Another scratching sound comes from the backyard aftee a few minutes, right near the side door leading to the trees. I swallow the lump in my throat, wondering if there is more than one intruder, and what they evn wajt from ab abandoned cottage in the woods.

The only thing of value is probably ng car.

My wolf, Rook, starting to pace restlessly inside my head. He is sensing something, but his signals are completely scrambled by my own fear. I undo the latch on the side door, moving as quietly as possible, and slip out into the freezing night air. making me ro shiver. I step off the porch, my bare feet sinking into the damp dirt as I scour the dark area.

“Who’s there?” I call out. “Show yourself.”

Theres silence.

I take another step forward, turning around to check behind the water tank when suddenly, a rough clothe is slammed over my face, plunging me into complete I darkness.

Before I can even process what is happening, strong arms wrap around my chest from behind, pinning my arms down to my sides and trapping the flashlight against my body. I begin to struggle violently, throwing my body backward and kicking out with my feet, trying to dislodge the person holding me. But the person is strong, refusing to let go no matter how hard I thrash.

For some odd reason, I am weak, too weak to break this hold, and the humiliation of being captured on my own property makes my blood boil.

Do something! I scream at my wolf internally needing his strength but took doesnt even growl in anger or try to force a transformation to fight off an enemy. Instead, he lets out a sudden, frantic whine and practically wags his tail in the back of my mind. I stop struggling instantly, my body going completely limp in the intruder's grasp.

“Cassian, what the hell?” I choke out.

The grip around my chest loosens immediately and the bag is ripped off my head. I blink rapidly gasping for breath as I whirl around to face my attacker.

Cassian is standing right there with a huge, amused grin etched onto his face. He is wearing a dark hoodie, so unbothered by the fact that he just tried to abduct or kill me in the middle of the woods.

“Hello, Rhettie,” he says sweetly.

CassianI push the dorm room door open, holding a paper bag with a half-eaten sandwich inside. It is already late afternoon, so the dorm is quiet as most of the students have gone out for the weekend. I walk inside, expecting to see a very familiar sight of Rhett lounging on his bed, looking completely miserable, or staring at his phone as he does every weekend before he ends up going to hockey training. But the room is completely quiet.I set my lunch down on the table and look around, then walk over to his side of the room, my eyes scanning the floor. His black duffel bag he usually keeps by his closet is missing from the corner. At first, I think he probably went to training early, but then I notice the closet is slightly open and a few of his everyday clothes are gone from the hangers, too.He left. But to where, and why?I sink onto my own mattress, a strange, frustrating emptiness settling deep into my stomach. Ideally, I should be happy that the bastard isn’t here to glare at m

Rhett I needed to get away from Blackridge.Between feeling suffocated by my father paying me surprise visits, the rumors spreading around the hockey team, and Cassian constantly finding new ways to drive me insane in that dorm room, I just needed to breathe. So, I packed a bag and decided to take Savannah to my late mother’s cottage for the weekend. It was a small, secluded place deep in the woods, about an hour away from the campus. I hadn’t been here in about three years because every single time, I remembered that she had died and how she died, making me angry and bitter all the same. But now, I had come here to confront my worst fears. The plan we had was simple: clean up the dust and make dinner together. Savannah had been really excited about it, but I really was not. It just felt like a relief to be out of the city.“It’s really beautiful here, Rhett,” Savannah said softly, placing a box of groceries on the wooden kitchen counter. She smiled at me, looking around at the dusty

Cassian Three bubbles appear on the screen as soon as I send the text, dancing for a few seconds as Jacob starts to type a response, and then they suddenly disappear. I wait for a few more minutes for a response, hoping it’s because of a bad Wi-Fi connection on his end or mine, but there is nothing. A cold sweat breaks out across the back of my neck. I tuck my phone deep into my pocket, look once at the closed bathroom door where the water is still running, and step out of the room without thinking. My legs are moving before my brain can even formulate a rational excuse for what I’m doing. I keep telling myself I’m only doing this because I want to destroy Rhett my way, but the panic I feel is telling a completely different story. I am only lying to myself about what I truly want. The hallway is freezing cold, and I am not even sure if Jacob us in my block or not. There is no reason why Rhett should be going out again this night, so it can’t be tonight he has whatever gang pl

CassianRhett walks into the room just as I am putting away my laundry I have just received from the dry cleaners. He sighs when he sees me and rolls his eyes, dropping his helmet on his bed. “So, what’s this about, huh?”“What?” I ask, blinking innocently at him. I cross my arms over my chest as I take a few steps toward him.“Jacob? Savannah?” He scoffs and shakes his head, sucking his teeth. “Yeah, you’re up to something that’s not good.”I tilt my head at him and lift my brows. “You sound paranoid. I hear therapy works for constant paranoia… that it might be PTSD from something traumatic. Or maybe you’re scared of karma. Did you do something bad, Rhettie?”He lets out a laugh of disbelief, and this time, he is the one that takes a step forward, until there’s almost no space between us. “Wow, Cassian. Who knew you had so much evil in you… you mentioned therapy to Savannah, didn’t you?”“She agrees you need it,” I smile graciously. “We got to talking, and she admits there’s somethin

RhettCassian is up to something, and I need to know what.First, he had been playing nice with Savannah by the bleachers, and as soon as practice was over, she had come to tell me that my roommate was nice and cared about me. Now, I am walking into the locker room to see Jacob sitting and talking with Cassian fucking Storm. I just can’t prove it yet, but I am sure as fuck my gut feeling isn’t wrong.“What the hell is this about, Storm?” I ask in a cold tone, walking up to him until I’m completely in his space.“I don’t know, Reed. What do you want it to be about?”“Stay the fuck away from this arena or space, Cassian,” I warn him.The door opens behind me, the rest of my teammates pouring in. I take a step back, give a tight smile, and then walk off.Savannah is waiting for me outside, a hoodie on her arms. “You look angry, babe.”I say nothing in response to her and keep walking while she follows behind me.“You’re walking to the dorm? And you didn’t even change…” she comments.I st

Rhett I have always known my father to be a brutal beast. Brutal doesn’t even cut it. Merriam-Webster needs to invent a couple more words, because there are not enough of them in the English language to describe how much of a monster he is. My body aches and stings all over, breathing is a nig
