Rhett’s POV

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I manage to say. I want to snarl, but my stupid wolf is too busy being restless and practically begging me to lean into the touch. I have no fucking idea why.

“Really?” He asks. The hatred in his eyes is unmistakable, despite the smirk on his face.

That breaks me, but who am I to complain?

I had caused it… making my best friend a target for bullying because I was too cowardly to stand up to my father. Because I felt hating Cassian would have made my father less suspicious of my friendship with him… to protect him.

Stupid, I know.

There is no salvaging this.

“You are overestimating your importance. Let go,” I say coldly, meeting his gaze with equal intensity and praying hard to the Goddess that he can’t see the conflict buried inside me. “Or else.”

The eyes are the window to the soul—my mom used to say when she was still alive. I am hoping right now that it is not true.

“Or else what?” he questions, lifting his brows. He’s not backing down.

“You don’t want to find out, trust me.” I make sure the coldness in my voice is still there.

I am Rhett Reed, the future alpha of the Blackridge Pack—I can handle him. “Your little pepper spray stunt this morning?” I scoff. “Oh, trust me, I’ll fucking punish you for that.”

Cassian smirks and moves even closer. I can feel his hot minty breath on my face as one hand touches my cheek slightly. “Punish me? I have a few ideas—”

“Fuck off!” I yell, pushing him with a sudden force. He stumbles backwards into a table but steadies himself, then looks up at me with those eyes.

My heart is racing in my chest as I wonder if it is just me that I am reading meaning into it because I am in denial.

Cassian is every fucking where and I hate it.

The yells from my coach barely register in my head as he is reprimanding both me and my teammate on the training rink.

How am I supposed to explain that the real reason I am far from okay and being able to focus is because my roommate is sending me into a frenzy. First, I had been yelled at for beinf thirty minutes late—Cassian had locked me in and I was only able to leave the room by jumping through the window, only to get reprimanded by dorm security for breaking the rules.

I had gotten to the training rink and he was there, watching my every move. I wanted to show him how dominant I was, instead i kept making mistakes and had rammed into my teammate who decided to retaliate.

“He pushed me first so I shouldn’t even be getting yelled at!” Jacob snarls angrily. “Just cause he’s captain, y’all be taking his fucking side.”

“I am not taking anyone’s side… I am only trying to…”

I zone out again, looking at him.

“Rhett!” Comes the angry voice of my coach. “Take your position again…”

I nod and skate over to the other edge of the rink

“You’ve been distracted lately,” comments Matt, who is my beta in training. “Is everything alright with you?”

“Of course.”

“You sure? You kind of ran off last night, and I didn't even see you in class today.”

I shrug, not bothering to answer. What exactly am I supposed to say to him? That I am losing my shit over my ex best friend, and my wolf who should have been grounding me is currently losing his shit about the scent of a mate we haven’t been able to identify.

She’s close by, I know it. Deep down, I wonder if it will be as easy as I have planned.

Hi. I’m rejecting you as my mate because I already have someone set to marry by my father.

That couldn’t be too hard, right?

But what if my wolf goes crazy over rejecting her

“You are doing that shit again,” says Matt as he swings his puck.

“What?”

“Zoning out.”

One hour later, training is over. I take a quick shower in the locker room, pack up my stuff and head towards the exit. Cassian is there and immediately his arms wrap around my shoulders, pulling me in the direction of the dormitories.

“What the hell are you doing?” I seethe, trying to take his arm off but it wouldn’t even budge. I look behind me to see some of my teammates who are leaving too staring and then whispering amongst themselves.

Fuck, no.

Goddess please let them not think in that direction.

“You’re slacking Rhett,” Cassian finally says aftee few minutes of silence. “You look pathetic on the ice. Always getting distracted—“

“Because of you!” I snap. “So leave me the hell alone for fucks sake!”

“Nuh-uh.” He’s enjoying this way too much and I hate it.

We get to the dorm and he finally lets me go, using my key that he stole to open the door. I push my way in angrily, wanting to just sink into my bed and forget about everything.

But seating on my bed is none other than my father, a magazine in his hand.

A magazine that shows two men holding each other intimately.

Rhett Savannah is already fast asleep beside me, snoring softly as she’s snuggled deep under the covers. The room is completely dark, save for the pale moonlight filtering through the window. I stare at the ceiling, my mind running in a million different directions aa it feels impossible to sleep despite the fact that I am exhausted. It’s even more difficult because I am trying not to turn around too much so as not to wake Savanah. When I can’t hold the position I am in any longer and I turn my head to find a better position, my eyes travel toward the floor and catch a glimpse of her jacket on the rug. Suddenly I remember the way she had quickly slid that little object into her cloth pocket when she thought I wasn’t looking.Very quietly, I slip out from the bed, making sure the mattress doesn't move or make a single sound. Savannah doesn't even stir. She just shifts slightly and continues sleeping.I tiptoe across the floor until I am kneeling right next to the jacket, my heart pudi

CassianI push the dorm room door open, holding a paper bag with a half-eaten sandwich inside. It is already late afternoon, so the dorm is quiet as most of the students have gone out for the weekend. I walk inside, expecting to see a very familiar sight of Rhett lounging on his bed, looking completely miserable, or staring at his phone as he does every weekend before he ends up going to hockey training. But the room is completely quiet.I set my lunch down on the table and look around, then walk over to his side of the room, my eyes scanning the floor. His black duffel bag he usually keeps by his closet is missing from the corner. At first, I think he probably went to training early, but then I notice the closet is slightly open and a few of his everyday clothes are gone from the hangers, too.He left. But to where, and why?I sink onto my own mattress, a strange, frustrating emptiness settling deep into my stomach. Ideally, I should be happy that the bastard isn’t here to glare at m

Rhett I needed to get away from Blackridge.Between feeling suffocated by my father paying me surprise visits, the rumors spreading around the hockey team, and Cassian constantly finding new ways to drive me insane in that dorm room, I just needed to breathe. So, I packed a bag and decided to take Savannah to my late mother’s cottage for the weekend. It was a small, secluded place deep in the woods, about an hour away from the campus. I hadn’t been here in about three years because every single time, I remembered that she had died and how she died, making me angry and bitter all the same. But now, I had come here to confront my worst fears. The plan we had was simple: clean up the dust and make dinner together. Savannah had been really excited about it, but I really was not. It just felt like a relief to be out of the city.“It’s really beautiful here, Rhett,” Savannah said softly, placing a box of groceries on the wooden kitchen counter. She smiled at me, looking around at the dusty

Cassian Three bubbles appear on the screen as soon as I send the text, dancing for a few seconds as Jacob starts to type a response, and then they suddenly disappear. I wait for a few more minutes for a response, hoping it’s because of a bad Wi-Fi connection on his end or mine, but there is nothing. A cold sweat breaks out across the back of my neck. I tuck my phone deep into my pocket, look once at the closed bathroom door where the water is still running, and step out of the room without thinking. My legs are moving before my brain can even formulate a rational excuse for what I’m doing. I keep telling myself I’m only doing this because I want to destroy Rhett my way, but the panic I feel is telling a completely different story. I am only lying to myself about what I truly want. The hallway is freezing cold, and I am not even sure if Jacob us in my block or not. There is no reason why Rhett should be going out again this night, so it can’t be tonight he has whatever gang pl

CassianRhett walks into the room just as I am putting away my laundry I have just received from the dry cleaners. He sighs when he sees me and rolls his eyes, dropping his helmet on his bed. “So, what’s this about, huh?”“What?” I ask, blinking innocently at him. I cross my arms over my chest as I take a few steps toward him.“Jacob? Savannah?” He scoffs and shakes his head, sucking his teeth. “Yeah, you’re up to something that’s not good.”I tilt my head at him and lift my brows. “You sound paranoid. I hear therapy works for constant paranoia… that it might be PTSD from something traumatic. Or maybe you’re scared of karma. Did you do something bad, Rhettie?”He lets out a laugh of disbelief, and this time, he is the one that takes a step forward, until there’s almost no space between us. “Wow, Cassian. Who knew you had so much evil in you… you mentioned therapy to Savannah, didn’t you?”“She agrees you need it,” I smile graciously. “We got to talking, and she admits there’s somethin

RhettCassian is up to something, and I need to know what.First, he had been playing nice with Savannah by the bleachers, and as soon as practice was over, she had come to tell me that my roommate was nice and cared about me. Now, I am walking into the locker room to see Jacob sitting and talking with Cassian fucking Storm. I just can’t prove it yet, but I am sure as fuck my gut feeling isn’t wrong.“What the hell is this about, Storm?” I ask in a cold tone, walking up to him until I’m completely in his space.“I don’t know, Reed. What do you want it to be about?”“Stay the fuck away from this arena or space, Cassian,” I warn him.The door opens behind me, the rest of my teammates pouring in. I take a step back, give a tight smile, and then walk off.Savannah is waiting for me outside, a hoodie on her arms. “You look angry, babe.”I say nothing in response to her and keep walking while she follows behind me.“You’re walking to the dorm? And you didn’t even change…” she comments.I st
