Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
Raucous laughter exploded through the room, accompanied by clapping and wolf-whistling. They jeered at me, goading me to quickly pick a woman and take her home.

I let out a long sigh, the dull throbbing in my heart gradually turning numb.

"No need. From now on, you can do whatever you want. I won't stop you anymore."

In an instant, the atmosphere in the room grew tense, likely because this was the first time they had seen me display such an attitude.

In the past, I had been willing to cast aside all dignity to beg Natania to come home. I had even licked her lovers' shoes and personally cleaned up after them following a night of pleasure.

This was the first time I had ever stood up to her.

Natania was momentarily stunned, and then she frowned. "What are you up to this time—"

Before she could finish, the urgent ringing of my phone interrupted her.

I glanced at the caller ID, fell silent, and then turned to step out, shutting the private room's door behind me and cutting off Natania's curious gaze.

"Leon, tomorrow is your brother's death anniversary. It's been three years, yet Nat still hasn't forgiven you, nor have you completed what we agreed upon. I'll be returning to the country in a week. I hope you will have handled everything properly by then."

My head hung low, and even through the door, the sounds of Natania and Samuel's amorous kissing still reached my ears.

"Alright, I promise."

The death anniversary of my older twin brother, Jonathan Sander, was February 8th.

Ever since our parents cut ties with me three years ago, they had forbidden me from visiting Jonathan's grave. Every year, I had to wait until Mom, Dad, and Natania had left before I could pay my respects.

"Dad, Mom, this is Samuel Greene. He looks a lot like Jon, doesn't he?"

Natania's words caused me to freeze in my tracks. Raising my head, I saw my parents staring at Samuel with red-rimmed eyes. Right there in front of Jonathan's grave, they pulled Samuel into a tight hug.

"He does. He looks so much like Jon! It's almost like he's alive again…"

Tears welled in my eyes, and I instinctively touched my own face. Technically, the person who looked the most like Jonathan was me, his twin brother. However, everyone seemed adamant about pretending I didn't exist.

At the sight of my parents, whom I hadn't seen in a long time, I subconsciously moved forward.

"Dad, Mom…"

That single utterance was enough to shatter the warm and peaceful atmosphere.

Natania glared at me with visible disgust, while Dad strode forward and struck me with a hard smack across the face.

Mom, who had always been a gentle woman, shrieked heartbrokenly when she saw me. "What right do you have to come here? If it weren't for you, your brother wouldn't be dead! You animal!"

Although three years had passed, their hatred for me hadn't lessened; if anything, it had grown.

My ears rang from the force of the slap, and the coppery taste of blood spread in my mouth.

"Jon died in that car crash, yet you lived. Isn't that what you wanted so you could inherit the family business? Let me tell you right now—I don't have a son like you! You were kicked out of the Sander family long ago. You have no right to visit Jon!"

Dad glared at me viciously, his harsh words piercing my chest like daggers.

All color drained from my face, but I took a deep breath and pulled my shirt up, revealing the four-inch jagged scar that ran across my abdomen.

My voice shook as I said, "I was in the car at the time too. I couldn't possibly have had the time to tamper with it. Jon's death truly had nothing to do with me…"

"Then why weren't you the one who died? Why did it have to be Jon?" Mom screamed.

I felt as though a bucket of ice water had been dumped over me, the cold seeping through my veins.

For a moment, I could only stare at my mother, whose eyes were bloodshot with rage. Then, I hung my head dejectedly.

As it turned out, all this time, they had been wishing that I was the one who had died instead.

After the truth was revealed, Natania escaped from the Gilmore residence and stood in the pouring rain, pounding on my door the entire night. At last, I couldn't take it anymore and yanked the door open in annoyance. Her eyes were swollen red, and her hunger strikes had left her cheekbones sunken, ruining her pretty features."I'm so sorry, Leon. I didn't know the truth would be like that. Why didn't you tell me back then?"She wiped away her tears, her voice filled with regret. Still, there was no hiding the accusing note in her tone as she asked me that question."I did tell you, but you never listened."On the day of our wedding, I had explained that I wasn't the murderer. I had used every bit of my energy to clarify my innocence, yet nobody had been willing to listen. To Natania, I had simply been making up excuses."The one-month cooling-off period is over, so we can get our divorce finalized now."I no longer held any hope for Natania. All I wanted was to get my divorce c

I let out a long sigh. "Mr. and Mrs. Sander, the police conducted a thorough investigation back then and found sufficient evidence to prove I wasn't the killer. I almost lost my life that day as well. What else could you possibly want from me?"I no longer harbored any expectations of my parents, nor did I waste any breath trying to explain myself as I had in the past. They were taken aback, clearly unprepared for the sudden change in how I addressed them. My mother was the first to recover, her lips curling in contempt. "Who knows if you bribed someone to fake that evidence? Did you think you would gain our sympathy by injuring yourself? That car was perfectly fine—why would it suddenly skid? Someone must have tampered with it!"I didn't even want to look at them anymore."No matter what I say, you won't believe me. Since I'm no longer part of the Sander family and no longer your son, you can have me arrested if you're so certain of my guilt."As soon as I finished, my fathe

The night Jonathan had his accident, I was also hospitalized in the ICU. When I regained consciousness, I was immediately informed of Wendy's decision to marry Natania off to an elderly man.Hence, I made a deal with Wendy. She would give me three years to have a child with Natania, and if I succeeded, the marriage to Mr. Silane would be called off.Upon receiving my confirmation, Natania slumped back into her seat, all her energy drained. "I don't want to marry an old man! Mom, how could you sacrifice me for the sake of the Gilmore family business?" she wailed. To Wendy, Natania's protest was a challenge to her authority. She retorted coldly, "I already gave my word to Mr. Silane. If it weren't for Leon, you would've been married to him three years ago! Now, you have no other choice."Natania's spirit seemed to shatter. She shot me a look of desperate helplessness, then turned to Samuel. Seizing his sleeve, she said, "Didn't you say you wanted to marry me? Let's elope now! I wi

A divorce agreement stared coldly back at Natania. Her breathing hitched, and she let out a cold laugh before snatching up the pen I offered her. "At least you're aware that your constant pestering over the years has caused me nothing but disgust. Are you betting on the fact that I wouldn't dare sign it? Well, I can't wait to be rid of you!"As she spat those words at me, she signed her name on the agreement with such force the pen nearly tore through the paper. Once finished, she tossed it down with a loud clatter, though her fingers continued to tremble. Beside her, Samuel couldn't contain his delight when he saw her sign the papers. He locked his fingers tightly with Natania's and cried out, "Nat, this means I can finally stand proudly by your side!"I watched the pair for a moment, absorbing their expressions before standing up. "Mdm. Gilmore, I failed to fulfill the promise I made to you three years ago. Don't worry. From now on, I won't interfere in Natania's life anymore.

I wasn't the least bit surprised to hear Natania say that.Once she finished spitting out her harsh words, she turned to leave, deliberately ramming her shoulder into mine as she passed. Silence returned to the living room. I sloppily patched myself up, and I had only just finished when the doorbell rang. An anonymous parcel had arrived specifically for me.Upon opening it, I discovered a pregnancy test stick and medical report. Both belonged to Natania. My fingers trembled slightly as I picked up the stick; the two bright red lines stabbed into my eyes.A few minutes later, a message from Samuel arrived."Mr. Sander, did you receive my gift? Even a touch from you is enough to make Natania feel disgusted for three days straight, yet she's as passionate as a burning fire when she's with me. "You're clearly the one who resembles Jonathan most, so how is it that you can't even compare to me as a substitute?"For a long while, I sat there in a daze. Pain radiated from my fing

"Nat, didn't you say that Leon never visits Jon on his death anniversary? Why is he suddenly here?" Samuel spoke up from beside Natania, his fingers tightly interlocked with hers. Then, as if he had just realized something, he plastered a look of terror on his face."Could it be that because I look so much like Jon, he's come here specifically to kill me?""That's bullshit!"Fury surged within me at the way Samuel was deliberately twisting the truth. I lost control and threw a punch at his face. In the next second, however, I was pinned to the ground by Natania's bodyguards.I raised my head to stare at her in shock. She scowled at me, her gaze frosty. "Sam is right. You deserve a beating for daring to act out in front of Jon."As she spoke, she accepted a wooden bat from a bodyguard and smashed it against my knee. With a sharp, sickening crack, my kneecap shattered, sending me crashing to the ground before Jonathan's grave. My face drained of color as pain consumed me. "Y
