Chapter 3

Author: Soy Jo
Naomi and Zoey were stunned to hear my demands. I didn't ask for money. I just wanted them to hold a press conference.

"I want you to admit to all the reporters in this city that you're an ungrateful and despicable coward. I want you to bow in apology to me in front of the press."

Naomi's expression hardened at once. "Don't you dare push it, Caleb! I already apologized to you just now, didn't I? I'm just trying to live! How can you rob me of my dignity like that?"

She was a well-known young entrepreneur in the city. What she valued most was the fabricated public image she'd crafted for herself. Forcing her to publicly admit her own depravity would be worse than killing her.

This was only the first step in my revenge plan. She needed to experience the humiliation I'd endured throughout these years.

Meanwhile, Naomi slammed her hand on the table, shooting up from the chair. She'd dropped her pitiful act.

"I didn't know you were aware of the concept of dignity," I said while calmly looking at her. "What happened to the nonchalance you displayed when you abandoned me at the hospital without the slightest hesitation?

"Did it ever occur to you what my life would be like after ending up in this state because of you?"

I turned to Zoey. "Didn't you tell her what life had been like for me for the past few years?"

Zoey hadn't expected me to turn the blade on her so suddenly. She opened her mouth but couldn't find the words.

Scoffing, I looked back at Naomi again.

"While I was scorned and looked down on by the rest of society for being a cripple, you were having a blast living your comfortable, glorious life, weren't you, Ms. Sutton?"

"I…" The words seemed to be stuck in Naomi's throat, and her face turned purple.

Zoey finally overcame the shock and immediately stepped in to mediate. She grabbed Naomi, who was trembling with anger, by the shoulder and eased her back onto her chair while soothing her in a gentle voice.

"Calm down, Naomi. The doctor said you mustn't get too agitated."

Then she turned to me with mixed emotions in her expression, her brows tightly furrowed.

"As you can see, Caleb, Naomi isn't doing too well right now. If she's emotionally distressed, her condition will worsen. Do you think… you can switch the condition to something else?

"How about some money or a house? Name your price. We'll give you as much as you want."

I snorted. "Zoey, after knowing me for three years, do you think it's money that I want?"

Zoey stiffened.

I slowly stood and looked down at Naomi, who was still burning with rage.

"It seems to me that you still don't understand the situation, Naomi. You're the one begging me to save your life, not the other way around."

I turned to leave.

"Caleb!" Zoey panicked and rushed over to grab my arm. "Don't be like this. Let's just talk things through."

I shook her off and eyed her icily. "Did I not make myself clear enough?"

The sharp look in my eyes made her avert her gaze, too scared to hold mine.

The tension grew in the silence. I knew Naomi was at war with herself. She was weighing the value of her life against that absurd pride she'd built by trampling on my dignity.

In the end, her desperation to live won.

"Fine…" Naomi feebly squeezed out the word through clenched jaws. "I'll do it."

Zoey never showed up again, and my life resumed its peace. But two weeks later, a few police officers showed up at the welfare center. They showed me their identification, their expressions serious as they asked, "Are you Caleb Jackson?""That's me.""We would like to ask you some questions. A few days ago, the frozen body of a female was discovered in a park in the city center."The officer showed me a photo, and the gaunt woman in tattered clothing was indeed Zoey. She was curled up on a park bench, covered with several sheets of newspaper—and it was obvious that she'd stopped breathing."Based on the identification documents we found on her, we confirmed that she was a tourist from Canvelia. We also found her clutching this tightly."Another police officer took out an evidence bag. Inside it was a worn photo, slightly blurred from water damage. It was a photo of me, one taken by the sea just after I'd received my new prosthetic limb. I was wearing a white shirt and staring ou

  • She Healed Me to Harvest My Life   Chapter 8

It was a winter afternoon, with light snow drifting through the air.I'd founded Cosmic Haven, a welfare center that provided psychological support and art education to disabled children. The center was currently having a small exhibition, and the walls were covered with the children's creative artworks. Some of the children had lost arms, while some were in wheelchairs. Yet every face was filled with genuine joy.I was crouched down, adjusting the hat of a young boy with a prosthetic limb. That was when a commotion broke out at the entrance. I turned to look and saw a woman in a worn-out coat being held back by security. Her hair was greasy, and her face was gaunt. She looked unhealthily thin, and her eyes were clouded. All in all, she looked rather pathetic. But her eyes lit up when she saw me, and she charged desperately at me as if I were her lifeline."Caleb! It's me, Caleb!"The security guards failed to stop her. She stumbled right up to me, and a sour, rotting odor hit m

I closed the articles and focused entirely on my new life. I began to look at my physical loss from a different angle. The artificial eye that I couldn't see with was no longer a mark of shame.I impulsively decided to use my artificial eye as a tiny canvas, painting on it to turn it into a unique piece of art. The themes were fairly varied. I painted cosmic universes, cyberpunk gears, and even miniature landscapes.I started a social media account called "UniverseInAnEye" and began sharing my work and daily life. The first video I uploaded showed me calmly removing my artificial eye and revealing the hollow socket beneath. Then, I slowly used brushes and modeling tools to turn it into a mechanical eye sculpture.I didn't expect the video to go viral overnight. Countless messages flooded my inbox."You're such an icon, dude. I've been feeling insecure because of the scar on my leg all these years. Thank you for the courage you've given me.""This is insane! You didn't lose an eye

  • She Healed Me to Harvest My Life   Chapter 6

I chose to settle down in a small country with temperate weather. No one here knew me or was aware of my past.I gave myself a new name—Luke, which meant giver of light. I hoped to be free of the shadows of the past and live a life filled with light. The first thing I did was use the money I had to seek out the best medical treatments in the world. I contacted a top-tier prosthetics research institute and had a state-of-the-art intelligent bionic limb custom-made for me.When the doctor fitted that cold but powerful prosthesis onto my body, for the first time in eight years, I experienced what it felt like to have two feet firmly planted on the ground again.I took a step, then another, until the stiff motion evolved into smooth pacing.During my time at the rehabilitation center, I gradually went from being able to walk to being able to run. Eventually, I could move so naturally that I didn't seem any different from other people with two functioning legs.I was drenched in sweat

The reporters surged toward the stage, their cameras flashing nonstop."Ms. Rivers! Are the chat logs real? Did you really pursue Mr. Jackson to trick him into donating his kidney to your sister?""Ms. Sutton! Eight years ago, you abandoned the man who became disabled because of you, and now, you've teamed up with your sister to stage this performance. Do you have a conscience at all?""How can you two sleep at night after everything you've done?"Questions flew from every direction as the press scrambled for the juiciest scoop.Naomi's sallow face had turned completely ashen. She pointed at me, her lips trembling violently, but no words came out. Her body swayed, and she fell backward."Naomi!" Zoey screamed and tried to rush forward, but she was immediately surrounded by a wall of microphones and cameras. With a twisted expression, she shrieked, "It's all lies! Everything's fake! Caleb, you despicable man! You're going to hell for this!"Her curses were drowned out by even mo

Zoey organized the press conference in a ballroom at a luxury hotel. When I arrived, the venue was already packed with reporters. Rows of cameras were aimed at the stage, with the flashes going off from time to time.Naomi took a deep breath, picked up the microphone, and spoke in a dry, strained voice."Today, I invited everyone here to clarify and apologize for some past matters between myself and Mr. Caleb Jackson."She launched into a highly emotional account of how, years ago, she had fallen seriously ill and, fearing she would be a burden to me, made the painful decision to leave me. Only after prefacing with this did she apologize to me for abandoning me.However, her words subtly made me out to be a petty man who had agreed to save her life but was also trying to use that to strongarm her into fulfilling my demands. The crowd, who didn't know the truth, began to eye me with scrutiny.Even at a time like this, Naomi couldn't bear to forego her pride. This was the farthest
