THE HOSTILE BOARDROOM

Luna woke to sunlight instead of moonlight, and to the unfamiliar, dangerous comfort of waking somewhere that smelled entirely like him.

The sheets beside her had long since gone cool — Ethan was already gone, the space where he'd lain the night before nothing but a faint dent in the pillow and the ghost-warmth of cedar and salt still clinging to the linens — but her own body carried the memory of the night in ways sleep hadn't erased. The unhurried weight of his hands. The rough, reverent murmur of her name against her skin somewhere past midnight, stripped of every cold warning he'd delivered in the living room hours earlier. The slow, devastating patience of a man who'd spent the entire evening insisting this meant nothing while touching her like it meant everything.

She'd woken twice in the night to find him watching her in the dark, his expression unguarded in a way she suspected he'd never allow in daylight, and both times he'd drawn her back against his chest without a word, as though sleep only came easily to him with her weight anchored against him. She hadn't asked what that meant. She suspected he didn't know himself, and some careful, self-protective part of her wasn't ready yet to hear him lie about it.

Now, alone in a bed the size of a small country with sunlight spilling gold across dark linen, Luna lay very still and catalogued the ache in muscles she hadn't used in longer than she cared to admit, the faint soreness low in her belly that made heat climb straight back into her cheeks at the memory of exactly how it had gotten there, and told herself, with a firmness she didn't entirely believe, that last night had been exactly what he'd called it. A contract fulfilled. Nothing more.

Her phone, retrieved from the guest suite and charging obediently on the nightstand — someone, Freya probably, had clearly been in and out of the penthouse arranging Luna's things without waking her — buzzed with a text from Freya herself.

**Freya:** *Emergency board session called for 9am. Zayn Vance is attempting to call a confidence vote on your operational authority at Sterling Auto, citing "conflict of interest" from the merger. Get here NOW.*

Luna was out of bed before the second read-through finished.

---

She arrived at Sterling Tower forty minutes later in a charcoal suit sharp enough to cut glass, hair scraped back into the kind of severe knot she reserved for hostile negotiations, and found the boardroom already half-full of directors murmuring behind steepled hands, the particular electric tension of men and women sensing blood in the water thick enough to taste.

Zayn Vance stood at the head of the table like he already owned it.

He'd traded his gala charm for something sharper today, dressed in a navy suit that photographed like old money despite being new, flanked by two Sterling Auto board members Luna recognized instantly — Reginald Cho, unsurprising, and a woman named Patrice Okonkwo who'd sat quietly through every board meeting for the last three years and apparently decided this was the week to develop opinions.

"Luna." Zayn's smile was warm, easy, entirely at odds with the ambush currently assembling itself around her. "Glad you could make it. We were just discussing some concerns about governance."

"Concerns you scheduled at nine a.m. the morning after my wedding," Luna said, taking her seat at the table's head with a calm she manufactured through sheer will. "How thoughtful."

"Timing is everything in business, isn't it?" Zayn spread his hands, magnanimous, performing for the room rather than for her specifically. "Look, nobody here doubts your competence, Luna. Truly. But your marriage to my cousin creates a rather significant conflict of interest that this board has a fiduciary obligation to address. You now sit at the intersection of two companies' interests — Sterling Auto's and Vance Global's — and frankly, some of us are concerned that decisions you make going forward will serve your husband's empire rather than your father's."

"That's rich," Luna said, "coming from a man whose own cousin sits on this board's shortlist of interested parties."

"I have no formal position at Sterling Auto," Zayn said smoothly. "You do. That's precisely the problem."

Cho cleared his throat, official and grave in the way of a man who'd rehearsed this moment in a mirror. "Miss Sterling — Mrs. Vance, I suppose, now — the board has drafted a motion to install an interim independent operational committee pending review of governance conflicts arising from your marriage. A temporary measure, purely procedural, until—"

"Until you can strip whatever's left of my family's control and hand it to whoever's paying you this quarter," Luna cut in, and had the small satisfaction of watching Cho's composure flicker.

"That's an extremely serious accusation," Patrice Okonkwo said primly.

"It's an extremely serious pattern," Luna shot back. "Three sabotage incidents in four months, a board that suddenly discovers urgent governance concerns the morning after my wedding, and a motion drafted with suspicious speed for something you're calling 'purely procedural.' Forgive me if I don't take the framing at face value."

Zayn's smile didn't waver, but something colder moved behind it. "The vote's scheduled for this session, Luna. I'd suggest you prepare yourself for the possibility that the room doesn't share your confidence."

The door opened before Luna could answer.

Ethan entered without knocking, without announcement, without so much as glancing at the assistant who'd clearly tried and failed to stop him in the hallway, and the entire boardroom's temperature seemed to drop several degrees the instant he crossed the threshold. He'd dressed for war — charcoal suit, dark tie, the kind of controlled, coiled stillness that Luna had learned, in the last twenty-four hours, meant he'd already calculated every outcome in the room before he'd finished walking through the door.

"Zayn." His voice carried none of the cousin-to-cousin warmth from the gala, nothing but flat, glacial authority. "I wasn't aware Vance Media & Film had expanded into corporate governance consulting."

"Ethan." Zayn recovered his smile with impressive speed, though Luna caught the flicker of genuine alarm underneath it. "This is a Sterling Auto board matter. I don't believe you have standing—"

"My wife has standing," Ethan said, crossing the room to stand directly behind Luna's chair, one hand settling on her shoulder with a weight that felt, in front of this particular audience, less like tenderness and more like a claim staked in front of witnesses. "Which means, by extension, I have interest. And I find myself very interested in why this board scheduled an emergency confidence vote roughly twelve hours after my wedding, with a motion drafted, according to the timestamp on the document Mr. Cho just distributed, three days before the ceremony even took place."

Silence rippled through the room. Luna felt her own pulse spike — she hadn't caught the timestamp, hadn't thought to check, and watched with grim satisfaction as Cho's face drained several shades paler.

"That's — an administrative error," Cho said.

"Is it." Ethan didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. "Because it reads, to me, like a motion prepared in advance of an outcome someone was very confident would occur. Which raises the question of who was confident enough in Zayn's plan to draft paperwork before the wedding even happened." His gaze swept the table, unhurried, landing on each board member in turn with the patient, cataloguing intensity of a man taking inventory of exactly which allegiances he'd need to dismantle. "Patrice. Your firm's primary shipping contracts run through the eastern port terminals, don't they? The ones Vance Global controls sixty percent of."

Patrice's composure cracked visibly. "I don't see how that's relevant—"

"It's entirely relevant," Ethan said, "because as of this morning, Vance Global's board approved a comprehensive review of all third-party shipping contracts through our eastern port operations, prioritizing partners whose governance decisions align with sound fiduciary practice." The words came out smooth, corporate, utterly without threat on their surface — and utterly unmistakable in their meaning to everyone at the table who understood what Vance Global's oil and shipping monopoly actually meant for a company like Patrice's. "I'd hate for an administrative review to catch your firm at an inconvenient moment, Patrice. Fuel surcharges have been volatile lately. Terminal priority even more so."

The color drained entirely from Patrice's face.

"And Reginald." Ethan's attention shifted, unhurried, terrifying in its calm. "Vance Global holds the refinery contract supplying eighty percent of the fuel your logistics arm relies on for cross-continental freight. I understand your rates are already tight this quarter. It would be a shame if supply prioritization shifted away from partners whose boards were entangled in questionable governance motions."

Cho's mouth opened and closed without producing sound.

"This is coercion," Zayn said, though his voice had lost most of its earlier confidence, sharp enough now that Luna heard, underneath it, the genuine fury of a man watching his carefully built coup collapse in real time.

"It's leverage," Ethan corrected, calm as still water. "The same tool you and half this board attempted to use against my wife an hour before I walked in. I simply have more of it." He let the silence stretch, let every director at the table calculate, with visible discomfort, exactly how much of their own operations depended on Vance Global's goodwill. "The motion is withdrawn. Today. Or Vance Global begins a comprehensive review of every contract, every terminal slot, every fuel allocation this board's various interests depend on, effective within the hour."

Nobody spoke. Cho's hand, Luna noticed with grim satisfaction, had begun to tremble faintly where it rested on the withdrawn motion.

"The motion," Cho said finally, voice tight, "is withdrawn."

"Wonderful." Ethan's hand tightened once, briefly, on Luna's shoulder — not possessive exactly, or not only possessive, something warmer threaded beneath it that she felt rather than understood. "This meeting is adjourned."

The room emptied in a rush of scraping chairs and murmured, uneasy relief, directors filing out with the particular haste of people who'd just watched a man demonstrate, with terrifying efficiency, precisely how much of their livelihoods he held in one closed fist. Cho left without meeting anyone's eyes. Patrice followed close behind, already murmuring urgently into her phone.

Only Zayn lingered.

He'd recovered some of his easy, camera-ready charm by the time he reached the door, though something colder moved behind his eyes now, something that watched Luna with an assessing curiosity that felt entirely different from the flirtatious performance at the gala. He paused in the doorway, glancing back at Ethan's hand still resting on Luna's shoulder, at the careful, deliberate way Ethan had positioned himself as her shield throughout the entire confrontation, and something like understanding — or calculation — passed over his face.

"Well played, cousin," Zayn said, though the words carried none of their earlier warmth. "Truly. I didn't think you had it in you to burn that much leverage over one woman."

"Careful," Ethan said again, the same mild, poisonous warning he'd delivered at the gala.

Zayn's gaze slid, deliberately, to Luna. "Walk me out, Luna? Just to the elevator. I promise I've had all the fight taken out of me for one morning."

Ethan's hand tightened fractionally on her shoulder, and for a moment Luna thought he might refuse on her behalf. But something in Zayn's expression — sharper now, more urgent than his earlier performance — made her rise instead, murmuring a reassurance to Ethan that she'd only be a moment, and followed Zayn out into the corridor before either man could argue further.

They walked in silence toward the elevator bank, Zayn's earlier charm entirely stripped away, replaced by something taut and watchful that put Luna on guard in a way his gala flirtation never had.

"You should know something," Zayn said quietly, once they'd cleared earshot of the boardroom door, his voice dropping into a register that held none of its usual performance. "About my cousin. About how far his protection actually extends, and where it started."

"If this is another attempt to poison the well—"

"It's not." Zayn's eyes, when they met hers, held something that looked, disturbingly, like genuine concern buried beneath years of practiced charm. "I don't love my cousin, Luna. We both know that. But I'm not lying to you either, not about this."

The elevator arrived with a soft chime, doors sliding open onto an empty car. Zayn stepped inside, then turned back, one hand braced against the door to keep it from closing, and leaned toward her with a quiet, deliberate intimacy that felt, for the first time since she'd met him, entirely devoid of theater.

"He's protecting you now, cousin," Zayn murmured, close enough that only she could hear it, his gaze steady and unflinching on hers. "But ask him where he was the night your father crashed."

The elevator doors slid shut on his face before Luna could summon a single word in response, leaving her alone in the marble corridor with her heart hammering and the question already burrowing, cold and merciless, straight through the center of everything she'd let herself believe about the man currently standing guard in the boardroom behind her.

She had said yes.Luna remembered almost nothing of the actual word leaving her mouth — only the roar of relief that had swept through six hundred guests when it did, the priest's booming pronouncement, the eruption of applause that had rattled the stained glass in its two-hundred-year-old frames, Ethan's hand tightening around hers as he'd bent to kiss her a second time, chaste and photographable, nothing like the terrace. She remembered her father weeping openly in the front pew, unashamed for the first time since his accident. She remembered Aria's hand pressed to her own mouth, sobbing happily into Freya's shoulder. She remembered, distantly, the anonymous text still glowing somewhere in the folds of her gown like a coal she hadn't found the nerve to look at again. She did not remember, until the black car pulled beneath the private entrance of Vance Tower's residential floors well past midnight, exactly how she'd gotten from the altar to here — stripped of six hundred witnesses,

Kai had said nothing, in the end. He'd simply stepped aside the width of a single pace, enough to let Ethan's familiar footsteps close the distance behind her, and by the time Ethan's hand found the small of her back — warm, questioning, a silent *are you all right* pressed into her spine through nothing but touch — Kai had already melted back into whatever shadow had produced him, as though the entire encounter had been a trick of the corridor's dim gold light.Luna had said nothing about The Ghost that night. Not to Ethan, not even to Freya once she'd finally found her way back to the ballroom's noise and light. She'd filed the conversation away instead, turning Silas's words over and over in the sleepless hours before dawn — *someone with access to information only a handful of people should have* — until the phrase had worn smooth and strange in her mind, a stone rubbed featureless by too much handling. That had been three weeks ago. Tonight, she stood in a private dressing suite

The kiss had ended the way all good performances ended — not abruptly, but with a slow, deliberate unwinding, Ethan's mouth lifting from hers by fractions of an inch while the cameras beyond the glass kept firing, capturing every last frame of the aftermath: her flushed cheeks, her parted lips, the way her hand had fisted in the lapel of his jacket without her permission. He'd murmured something about *perfect, exactly what we needed* against her temple, low enough that only she could hear it, and Luna had spent the following twenty minutes trying to convince her own pulse that the ringing in her ears was adrenaline and not something far more dangerous. She excused herself to find the ladies' room sometime after ten, needing five minutes alone with cold water and a mirror to remember who she was supposed to be tonight — Luna Sterling, poised and unbothered, not some woman still feeling the ghost-press of a man's mouth against hers an hour after the fact. The powder room, when she foun

The dress had arrived that afternoon in a box lined with tissue paper so pale it was nearly translucent, no note attached, no explanation — just a single line from Ethan's assistant confirming a car would collect her at seven. Luna had stood in her closet holding the thing up to the light, a deep emerald silk that pooled like water over her arm, and thought, with a bitterness that surprised her by how tired it sounded even in her own head, *of course he dresses me too.*She wore it anyway. There was no version of tonight where she walked into the Vance Media & Film gala looking anything less than flawless, and she refused to give either Ethan or the wolves circling this city's social pages the satisfaction of catching her underdressed for her own public unveiling.Freya zipped her into it at six-forty, hands steady despite the worry that had lived behind her eyes since the men left Luna's office three days ago. Luna didn't sign it. Not that morning. She'd taken the contract instead — snatched it off the mahogany desk before Ethan Vance could press the pen back into her hand, and walked out of his office with her spine so rigid it ached, past the silver-haired assistant, past the security detail stationed like statues along the corridor, into the elevator where she finally let her knees remember they were shaking. By the time she reached the lobby, she'd stopped trembling. By the time she reached her car, she'd already decided: she would read every clause of this thing before she let it anywhere near her signature. Ethan Vance did not strike her as a man who left anything to chance, which meant the contract in her bag was not a lifeline. It was a leash. She intended to know exactly how long the chain was before she let him fasten it around her throat. She spent the rest of the day locked in her office with the blinds drawn, three cups of black coffee gone cold at her elbow, and Freya perched
