I gasped at the work she had done.

Not only was my makeup alluring and beautiful, but my hair complemented it in a unique way, ensuring the back of my dress would be in view.

“As I said, use this glitter spray on your skin before putting your dress on, and you’ll be the prettiest girl at the ball.” She smiled as she arranged her things.

“Thanks, Beth. I really appreciate it.” I said, giving her a smile.

“Well, how hot you look tonight will determine my next paycheck, so consider this my contribution.” She said as she waved and finally left.

I turned to take in myself once more.

I felt beautiful. I smiled as I got to work applying the spray and putting on my dress.

I noticed how dark the room was before I even stepped in, but it was still bright enough to see. Combined with the music that was playing, it was really a low-profile place.

“I feel so cold.” I mumbled, clinging to Noah’s arm. His warmth was really what I needed right now.

“Well, you do look stunning.” He said as he handed me a number tag. “Thanks.” “Wait, how do you even know about these kinds of places? It just seems off that you happen to know a place like this exists.” I narrowed my eyes at him.

He smiled sheepishly. “I may have passed my time here once or twice, just for fun.” He said, rubbing his head.

I shook my head as I clipped on the number tag. “So, how exactly is this supposed to go?” I asked as I took a drink from a waiter’s tray. If I was doing something so daring, I was going to need all the liquid courage I could get.

“Actually, we just mingle for a while, like a normal party. There’s like a raffle and the number called out has to go on stage, and the bid begins. It can be a bit fun sometimes. Everyone is pretty chill.”

“Fun? Well, let’s see how it goes.” I said, getting another glass.

I watched as various numbers got called out and pretty women climbed the stage.

I was starting to feel super intimidated. How was I supposed to compete with these gorgeous women?

I gaped as one of the women was offered $20000 on the spot for a date, A date! Damn.

It was fun though, considering two women ended up brawling over a man and they eventually had to be sent out. That was entertaining to watch.

I was on my third drink already, and I was starting to feel the buzz.

At that moment, my number got called as Noah cheered and I hiccupped.

“Come on, go up!” He said as he pushed me towards the stage, causing me to nearly trip.

I had totally forgotten why I was here and the fact that I would have to climb on stage. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears.

As I made my way to the front, I was certain everyone could see how much I was sweating as I nervously tried drying my palms. I finally climbed up and faced the numerous eyes staring at me.

I closed my eyes and decided to be more confident. Confidence was attractive, and I was doing a nice job of botching it right about now.

I stood higher, my shoulders straight as the commentator read my profile and I smiled.

The floor was now open for bidding.

“$5000!” I heard someone yell.

Well, I guess this was off to a good start.

It had climbed up to $7000, and I could feel my confidence growing. This wasn’t so bad after all.

Finally, the highest was $13000, and I was happy.

Who knows? Maybe I would come back for a second try.

As the commentator concluded, my eyes caught something in the crowd.

My eyes widened as I recognized the figure.

Was that Cassian?

I gulped as I walked down and the figure approached me.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” He asked. His face was in a death stare.

He was obviously angry.

I lifted my chin up. Who did he think he was?

“I’m hanging out with my friend. Is there a problem?”

He narrowed his eyes, and before I could blink, he had gripped my hand and started dragging me through the crowd.

“Let go of me!” I yelled.

Noah ran up to us, worry on his face.

“El? What’s the matter? Hey! Let go of her!” He shouted at Cassian as he tried separating our hands.

Cassian gave him a look. “Except you want to lose a limb, get your hands off my wife.”

“Don’t speak to him like that!” I said furiously to Cassian.

“Noah, I am so sorry. This is my husband. I… I have to go. I promise to call as soon as I can.” I let out as much as possible before hiccupping again.

Cassian dragged me away as I thrashed around in his arms.

“Let go of me!” I yelled at him. “Cassian!”

“Unless you want me to throw you over my shoulder, behave yourself.” He said calmly, moving through the crowd.

I kept quiet, but I was very sure my facial expression could communicate exactly how I was feeling.

When we got home, I banged the car door as loud as I could and went inside.

“Elara! We are not done talking.” Cassian’s voice bellowed.

“I’m done talking.” I yelled, not turning back.

I saw Celeste walking down the stairs, looking confused. Now the party was complete.

He grabbed me by my arm when I got to the stairs and turned me to him.

“You’re a married woman. How can you go out dressed like that and you’re drinking? Have you gone nuts?”

I forcefully released my hand from his grip as I glared at him.

“Oh, so now I’m a married woman? You’re a bloody hypocrite! It didn’t occur to you that you were married when you brought your mistress into this house?!”

Well, that wasn’t rude.I narrowed my eyes at her. I had had enough of her attitude.“You don’t have to be rude about it. I am the lady of this house, and I won’t tolerate your dismissiveness any longer.” I said firmly. She didn’t say anything, but I saw her clench her jaw.“Now, how can I get some tea?” I snapped.“In the kitchen, there’s an electric kettle; all you have to do is fill it with water and turn it on. It boils within minutes. Tea bags are in the cupboard above where it is being kept.”I nodded and watched her leave.I like the fact that I finally called her out. She was getting out of hand.I entered the kitchen and saw the kettle on a countertop as described.I opened the cupboard above it and saw the tea bags as she said. I brought them out and picked a mug. I turned to the counter and reached for the kettle so I could fill it with water.I let out a blood-curdling scream as I fell to the ground. My hands were burned, and the hot water splashed all over my skin.I crie

“What do you mean by she left? Why?”“Mr. Rooke asked her to leave.”Why would he ask her to leave after the night they had?It wasn’t making any sense.I didn’t say anything as I headed to my room.Celeste was gone. Just like that. What happened between them? Why send her away?“No, Elara, it is none of your concern. Don’t get dragged into their drama again.”I gave myself a reminder as I dissuaded my mind from thinking about anything related to them.Whatever they were up to was their business.I spent the rest of my evening packaging my pieces. I was going to take them to the office tomorrow. My room was starting to get cramped. After a gruesome couple of hours, I was finally done, as I arranged them in a corner.“Finally.” I groaned as I stretched.I was hungry, so I decided to go down for dinner.Celeste wasn’t around anymore. I didn’t need to be afraid of any run-in.Although some part of me was still expecting her to pop up in some corner of the house. When I got down, I met Ca

I didn’t know how to feel.I pulled back as I ran upstairs, eventually resting on a wall as I took deep breaths. What exactly was I feeling?I laughed as I remembered what Noah said, about me not seeing the kiss myself.Well, I saw it now. I wasn’t even surprised.Did they even know how many times I had caught them? Or were they just flaunting their relationship in my face? And why did Cassian ask for one of my paintings only to pull this move a few hours later?Well, my mood was now ruined.I took a deep breath as I finally lifted myself off the wall. There was nothing left in this house or in this marriage for me anyway. I never belonged here in the first place.I went up to my room and decided to return to bed. There was no use bothering the lovebirds.I spent hours twisting and turning in bed, unable to find a comfortable position. I was really starting to get frustrated. Was I possibly bothered about what I saw? There was no way.I didn’t like Cassian, and there was no way he lik

While my father continued screaming at me, I merely ignored them as I walked away.Melissa ran up to me. “You’re going to regret making an enemy of your family, Elara.”I rolled my eyes at her as I finally entered the car.In the car, I noticed Tony staring at me through the window every five seconds.“Tony, do you have something to say?” I finally asked, catching his eyes in the mirror.“I just wanted to make sure you’re all right.” He said, stiffly.“I’m completely fine.” I snapped. He didn’t say anything as he continued driving.“I’m sorry. I’m just a bit on edge. I have dealt with a lot today. You saw it firsthand: first Vivienne and now people who are supposed to be my family. I guess I just always thought they could change. It’s all just overwhelming, but at the same time, I’m happy I stood up to them. I feel… lighter.”He nodded. “If he wasn’t your father, he would have lost his hand.”He really was a man of few words.“Thanks for that earlier. I appreciate you stepping in.” I

That didn’t sound good. At all. I sighed in frustration. Whatever they wanted to say couldn’t be good.“Ma’am. Where are we off to next?”Did I want to go?“To my parents' place. My father has asked to see me.”I rested my head on the headrest as I exhaled.I couldn’t even catch a break after my gruesome lunch with Vivienne.I didn’t even eat anything. As I came in view of my parents’ house, I realized how much I did not miss this place. I did not want to be there. I actually felt better at Cassian’s place than at my childhood home. How ironic.I walked slowly to the door as I contemplated ringing the doorbell. I sighed as I raised my finger and pressed the doorbell. It didn’t take up to a minute when the housekeeper, Alison, opened the door. She had been working for us since I was about six years old. She was literally a shadow of my mother and followed her about mindlessly. She gave me a stiff nod as she ushered me in.“Where are my parents?” I asked the vile-looking old woman. She

I thought about what to tell Vivienne when I went to meet her. Something that would not end up with my head on a plate.I constantly fidgeted with my hands as Tony drove me to work."Are you alright, ma'am?" Tony asked, looking at me through the mirror.I got startled out of my thoughts. "Uh.. Yes.. Just ready for a wonderful day." I said with fake cheeriness. He didn't push further.I guess he knew I wasn't in the mood.Yes, I was scared of her. Who wasn't?Everyone knew how ruthless she was, and she wasn't exactly "motherly" the first time she spoke to me."Miss Elara!" Excited voices greeted me as I hugged the children.I was always happy when I saw their smiling faces. It made all the trouble worth it.After greeting the children, I went straight to my office, and before I could sit, Beth barged in with documents."Elara, I just need you to sign these papers today, and you can be on your way." She said, holding a bunch of files."Where are you off to in a hurry anyway? You usually
