“What?” He looked taken aback. “What did you just say?”

I almost laughed. “Are you surprised I know Cassian? Well, don’t be. I have been seeing you kiss her all over the house. You both have been sneaking around, huddled up together in your study, library and whatnot.”

I pointed at her.

“I don’t care what you do with her. What I will not tolerate is you trying to control my life while you’re having a blast.” I walked closer to him.

“Stay out of my way, Cassian, or I swear you won’t like what I’m going to do.”

As I stormed up the staircase, Celeste hurriedly stepped aside.

I banged my room door and threw my purse on the bed. I screamed in frustration.

Who did he think he was? Telling me what to do while sleeping with Celeste under the same roof? The nerve!

I angrily got undressed and quickly called Noah. It went straight to voicemail. I groaned in frustration. I hope he didn’t get into some kind of trouble.

I can’t believe I just lost $13000 because of my narcissistic husband.

Damn it!

The next day, I walked out of the house to meet a car waiting.

I looked at it in confusion as a man dressed in a black suit stepped out.

“Good morning, ma’am.”

I raised a brow in confusion.

“Who are you?”

“Your driver and personal bodyguard, ma’am. My name is Tony.” He opened the backseat door. “Where are we headed to today?”

I snorted. Yeah, right. Now he got me a babysitter?

“Tell your boss I don’t need a babysitter.”

I ignored the man and began walking.

I had been walking just fine since I got to this house, and taxis were more than okay for me.

I began walking and tried as much as possible to ignore the man behind me. He was literally driving and following me.

Didn’t he know how to take a hint?

I was already on the main road, and he still hadn’t given up. It didn’t help that I had been waiting for almost half an hour for a cab and I had not been able to get one.

He rolled down the window.

“Ma’am, you’re going to end up late for work. Just get in.”

I groaned. This was just going to prove Cassian right, and that was exactly what I was trying to avoid. Ugh.

I finally got in since no cabs were forthcoming.

We drove in silence to the foundation, and I had to deal with the uncomfortable silence the whole way. It seemed Tony wasn’t much of a talker.

Tony definitely did not play with his job. He was hovering at my door throughout the whole day, and it was starting to creep everyone out.

“Who’s the hunk by your door?” She asked like he wasn’t standing right there.

Tony’s expression didn’t even shift.

“My bodyguard.”

She wiggled her eyebrows. “I guess yesterday went well. Maybe I can snag that ass for myself.”

“Beth!” Did she have no shame?

“Hey, a girl can dream, plus he does look fine.”

“Tony,” I sighed again. “You don’t have to stand by my door for the whole day.

“I am only doing my job, ma’am.” He responded like a programmed robot.

I rolled my eyes.

At that moment, Noah walked in, and Tony placed a hand to his chest to stop him.

“Tony! This is my friend.” I yelled, standing up as Noah gave him a strange look.

“Look, just wait outside. I’m sure you can also protect me from there.” He gave me a look.

I sighed. Since he wanted to be like that, “That is an order.”

He gave a curt nod before stepping out.

“I see you now have a babysitter.” Noah grinned as he sat.

“Don’t even start with me.” I groaned, collapsing into my chair.

“He literally just appeared at my door this morning telling me he was now my driver.”

“Isn’t that a good thing? It would save you the stress of commuting to work every day. I can only imagine you must be walking out of that huge ass house every single morning.”

“That is an advantage, yes, but he feels more like a babysitter than anything else. Plus, Cassian is only doing this to prove a point that I can’t take care of myself.”

“It might not necessarily mean that. He did seem pretty worried about you yesterday. Maybe he genuinely cares.”

Cassian? Care about me?

“You wouldn’t understand, Noah. I called you yesterday. I hope everything was alright. I’m sorry if I caused any trouble for you at the event.”

“Nah, you didn’t. I managed to explain the situation to the organizers so it’s not a big deal.”

He leaned forward. “Besides, I really think Cassian cares about you. I could sense jealousy yesterday.”

I laughed. “Jealous? You clearly don’t know him.” I bit my lip. “Cassian and I are in a very complicated relationship.”

“You’ve said something like that before. Care to share?”

“Well…” I hesitated. Was I really comfortable telling him everything about my life?

“Don’t tell me you don’t still trust me.” He said, faking a shot to the chest.

“No, it’s not that,” I said. “I just.. haven’t really spoken to anyone about it before.”

“Maybe that’s where the problem is. You need a second opinion.”

“Okay, fine. How does lunch sound? Then I can tell you all about it, plus it would give me a chance to make up.”

“That sounds great. Are you doing anything now? We can just go now.” He said, standing up.

“Okay, great.”

A knock sounded on my door.

“Come in.” I called out.

Beth came in with a very huge smile on her face.

“Beth, you look as if you won the lottery. What’s up?” I asked curiously.

She dropped an iPad on the desk.

“Elara! Guess what?”

“What?” I asked confused.

“We just received a donation of $300,000 to the foundation’s account. Damn, Elara, you didn’t tell me you had such an attractive personality that would get $300,000 in the bag.” She clapped excitedly.

I furrowed my eyebrows. Huh?

“I don’t understand.

“We’re $300000 richer bitch!”

“I heard that part, but it wasn’t me, Beth. My date was… well, interrupted.”

She paused.

“What do you mean by it wasn’t you? Then who the hell donated such a huge amount of money to us?!”

Well, that wasn’t rude.I narrowed my eyes at her. I had had enough of her attitude.“You don’t have to be rude about it. I am the lady of this house, and I won’t tolerate your dismissiveness any longer.” I said firmly. She didn’t say anything, but I saw her clench her jaw.“Now, how can I get some tea?” I snapped.“In the kitchen, there’s an electric kettle; all you have to do is fill it with water and turn it on. It boils within minutes. Tea bags are in the cupboard above where it is being kept.”I nodded and watched her leave.I like the fact that I finally called her out. She was getting out of hand.I entered the kitchen and saw the kettle on a countertop as described.I opened the cupboard above it and saw the tea bags as she said. I brought them out and picked a mug. I turned to the counter and reached for the kettle so I could fill it with water.I let out a blood-curdling scream as I fell to the ground. My hands were burned, and the hot water splashed all over my skin.I crie

“What do you mean by she left? Why?”“Mr. Rooke asked her to leave.”Why would he ask her to leave after the night they had?It wasn’t making any sense.I didn’t say anything as I headed to my room.Celeste was gone. Just like that. What happened between them? Why send her away?“No, Elara, it is none of your concern. Don’t get dragged into their drama again.”I gave myself a reminder as I dissuaded my mind from thinking about anything related to them.Whatever they were up to was their business.I spent the rest of my evening packaging my pieces. I was going to take them to the office tomorrow. My room was starting to get cramped. After a gruesome couple of hours, I was finally done, as I arranged them in a corner.“Finally.” I groaned as I stretched.I was hungry, so I decided to go down for dinner.Celeste wasn’t around anymore. I didn’t need to be afraid of any run-in.Although some part of me was still expecting her to pop up in some corner of the house. When I got down, I met Ca

I didn’t know how to feel.I pulled back as I ran upstairs, eventually resting on a wall as I took deep breaths. What exactly was I feeling?I laughed as I remembered what Noah said, about me not seeing the kiss myself.Well, I saw it now. I wasn’t even surprised.Did they even know how many times I had caught them? Or were they just flaunting their relationship in my face? And why did Cassian ask for one of my paintings only to pull this move a few hours later?Well, my mood was now ruined.I took a deep breath as I finally lifted myself off the wall. There was nothing left in this house or in this marriage for me anyway. I never belonged here in the first place.I went up to my room and decided to return to bed. There was no use bothering the lovebirds.I spent hours twisting and turning in bed, unable to find a comfortable position. I was really starting to get frustrated. Was I possibly bothered about what I saw? There was no way.I didn’t like Cassian, and there was no way he lik

While my father continued screaming at me, I merely ignored them as I walked away.Melissa ran up to me. “You’re going to regret making an enemy of your family, Elara.”I rolled my eyes at her as I finally entered the car.In the car, I noticed Tony staring at me through the window every five seconds.“Tony, do you have something to say?” I finally asked, catching his eyes in the mirror.“I just wanted to make sure you’re all right.” He said, stiffly.“I’m completely fine.” I snapped. He didn’t say anything as he continued driving.“I’m sorry. I’m just a bit on edge. I have dealt with a lot today. You saw it firsthand: first Vivienne and now people who are supposed to be my family. I guess I just always thought they could change. It’s all just overwhelming, but at the same time, I’m happy I stood up to them. I feel… lighter.”He nodded. “If he wasn’t your father, he would have lost his hand.”He really was a man of few words.“Thanks for that earlier. I appreciate you stepping in.” I

That didn’t sound good. At all. I sighed in frustration. Whatever they wanted to say couldn’t be good.“Ma’am. Where are we off to next?”Did I want to go?“To my parents' place. My father has asked to see me.”I rested my head on the headrest as I exhaled.I couldn’t even catch a break after my gruesome lunch with Vivienne.I didn’t even eat anything. As I came in view of my parents’ house, I realized how much I did not miss this place. I did not want to be there. I actually felt better at Cassian’s place than at my childhood home. How ironic.I walked slowly to the door as I contemplated ringing the doorbell. I sighed as I raised my finger and pressed the doorbell. It didn’t take up to a minute when the housekeeper, Alison, opened the door. She had been working for us since I was about six years old. She was literally a shadow of my mother and followed her about mindlessly. She gave me a stiff nod as she ushered me in.“Where are my parents?” I asked the vile-looking old woman. She

  • Sold To The Scarred King   Chapter 14

I thought about what to tell Vivienne when I went to meet her. Something that would not end up with my head on a plate.I constantly fidgeted with my hands as Tony drove me to work."Are you alright, ma'am?" Tony asked, looking at me through the mirror.I got startled out of my thoughts. "Uh.. Yes.. Just ready for a wonderful day." I said with fake cheeriness. He didn't push further.I guess he knew I wasn't in the mood.Yes, I was scared of her. Who wasn't?Everyone knew how ruthless she was, and she wasn't exactly "motherly" the first time she spoke to me."Miss Elara!" Excited voices greeted me as I hugged the children.I was always happy when I saw their smiling faces. It made all the trouble worth it.After greeting the children, I went straight to my office, and before I could sit, Beth barged in with documents."Elara, I just need you to sign these papers today, and you can be on your way." She said, holding a bunch of files."Where are you off to in a hurry anyway? You usually
