Chapter 9

Author: Flowering Tree
(Elena’s POV)

After the wedding, Roman was as good as his word.

He handed part of the Vaughns' outside operations over to me.

At first, the people under me didn't respect me.

The way they looked at me was no different from those Sinclair men before.

"Someone the Sinclairs raised, and she's fit to run a Vaughn line?"

"A person who's turned once. Who's to say she won't turn again?"

When those words reached my ears, I merely smiled.

But the very next day, I went to the west-side casino myself.

(Elena’s POV)After the wedding, Roman was as good as his word.He handed part of the Vaughns' outside operations over to me.At first, the people under me didn't respect me.The way they looked at me was no different from those Sinclair men before."Someone the Sinclairs raised, and she's fit to run a Vaughn line?""A person who's turned once. Who's to say she won't turn again?"When those words reached my ears, I merely smiled. But the very next day, I went to the west-side casino myself. That place had had its books in a mess for half a year, and there was a hidden channel underneath, feeding information out. Before dawn, I had rooted out the leak and sealed the books. And along with it, I cleared a few of the worst gossips right out of the casino.Afterward I asked Roman, "I moved on your people. Do you mind?"He just glanced up at me. "You're my wife."After the west-side casino, the ones who'd been waiting to watch me fail finally went quiet. As for the Sinclairs, I only heard ab

  • Sorry, Don. This Time I Won't Wait for You   Chapter 8

(Elena’s POV)In the end, that day, Julian did leave. The Ross patriarch had turned on him in front of everyone, and Roman had driven his point that far. However far gone he was, he wasn't going to actually fire a gun at a Vaughn wedding. When the reception picked back up, the music started again. The guests went on raising glasses and making small talk, as if nothing had happened.Only the way they looked at me was different now.I stood at the edge of the terrace, watching the Sinclair car drive out of the estate. To be honest, I hadn't expected Julian to come. And I certainly hadn't expected him to say, in front of all those people, that he could give me East Harbor too.Roman's voice came from behind me."That gloomy look on your face right now is going to make me feel cheated."I came back to myself and turned my head toward him.He held a glass, leaning lazily against the terrace doorway."It is our wedding day, after all. If you stand here thinking about another man, I'll be ups

  • Sorry, Don. This Time I Won't Wait for You   Chapter 7

(Third-person POV)By the time Julian reached the Vaughn estate, the ceremony was already over.Deep inside the grounds, the lights blazed, white roses lined the long gallery, and the music of the reception drifted faintly out of the hall. He'd just stepped onto the stairs when the Vaughn guards stopped him."Sir, your invitation, please."Julian's expression was black as thunder."Move."The guard didn't budge."I'm sorry. Without an invitation, you're not setting foot inside tonight."The words had barely landed before Julian drew his gun and pressed the muzzle to the man's brow.Everything around them went dead silent. The guests who'd been passing by stopped in their tracks, breath caught like it had been cut off.The guard's face went white, and Julian's voice came out chilling."I'll say it once more.""Move."Just then, the hall doors were pushed open from the inside. The warm gold light of the reception spilled out.Elena and Roman Vaughn walked out side by side. She'd changed

(Third-person POV)Julian was still for a few seconds, then gave a cold laugh. "Impossible."The man quickly pulled out his phone. "There's no mistake. The photos are already out."The screen was held up in front of Julian. In the photo, Elena stood in a white wedding dress at Roman Vaughn's side. There was a pearl pin in her hair. It looked familiar to Julian, but for a moment he couldn't place where he'd seen it.Roman tipped his head down slightly and lifted a petal out of her hair.Elena didn't pull away.Julian stared at the photo, his face darkening bit by bit.A few of the women nearby murmured over their drinks."The Vaughn wedding is beautiful. I heard they redid the whole estate in white roses.""They did. And I heard the Vaughn heir went to bring the bride in himself. Talk about making a statement."Just then Chloe came over, her face a little pale."Don, I'm feeling dizzy. Could you take me back first?"Julian didn't look at her. He just handed the phone back to the man."B

  • Sorry, Don. This Time I Won't Wait for You   Chapter 5

(Third-person POV)The night Julian said he'd canceled the engagement party, it had only been talk out of anger.First thing the next morning, he called in his men."Book a new venue."The man blinked. "Don, last night you said..."Julian looked up.The man immediately lowered his head and didn't dare ask again.Julian flipped through a few guest lists in his hand, his voice flat."Make it formal this time.""Redo the invitations. Pick out new gowns.""If she thinks I'm not showing her enough respect, then I'll throw her one grand enough to settle it."The man hesitated, then said quietly, "But that date next week may have to change."Julian's hand stilled."Why?""The Vaughn heir is holding his wedding that day.""A few of the neutral families have already sent word that they've agreed to attend the Vaughn event."The study went quiet for a moment.Julian's face darkened a shade. The Vaughns. He'd never liked them. Not once.Years back, the Sinclairs and the Vaughns had fought over a

At the captains' meeting the next day, Chloe was standing at the far end of the long table when I pushed the door open.A map of the harbor routes was spread out in front of her, her fingertip resting on a small patch of the West Harbor border. That was the place my father had guarded for half his life.It was also the last bit of ground the Hart family had left."East Harbor's just been cleared out, and the ones who slipped away will most likely try to escape through here."Chloe's voice was gentle, but it carried clearly to every corner of the room."So my suggestion is that for the next seven days, we send men from East Harbor into the West Harbor border to assist."The room went quiet for a moment.Only then did she seem to notice me, and she immediately put on a slightly apologetic look."Elena, don't take it the wrong way. I'm not trying to muscle in on West Harbor.""It's just that your father isn't well, and you've had a hard time lately. A small place like this, leave it to my
