Chapter 1

When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was the anxious face of my mother, Amanda Rodman.

"Are you Harry or Simon?"

I ignored the warmth in the way she addressed me and answered calmly, "I'm Harry."

The three people standing by my bed all let out a sigh of relief.

A bitter look flashed across my eyes.

Every other time I woke up, they barely cared. They would only remind me to hurry up and study before leaving.

I never thought they would treat me so kindly this time.

It turned out they only wanted me to take the blame for Simon Rodman.

My older sister, Carla Rodman, pressed her lips together.

"Simon got into a fight with another boy at school. The other kid started it, so Simon was just defending himself. But he couldn't control his temper and beat the boy so badly that he was seriously hurt. We were going to let Simon take responsibility, but the draw picked you instead, so..."

I clenched the hand hidden under my blanket so tightly that my palm throbbed with pain.

She was lying.

Simon had started the fight because the other boy was wearing the same brand of sneakers.

And...

I looked at her and asked in a hoarse voice, "Oh, really? Was I really picked at random?"

My father, Mick Rodman, exchanged a glance with Amanda. Both of their faces stiffened.

Carla's expression didn't change. She only frowned, looking impatient.

"Of course. A fortune teller gave us this method when you were little. Do you really think we could cheat?"

I didn't ask any more questions.

I already knew what their answer would be.

She quietly let out a sigh of relief.

"Go wash up and come downstairs for breakfast. Then we'll head to the hospital to meet the boy's family."

After they left, the room fell silent. I could only laugh bitterly at myself.

The room had been decorated completely to Simon's taste. The bright colors matched his cheerful personality.

But I liked black.

My black clothes had been tossed into a corner of the floor like trash instead of being hung in Simon's closet.

A little while later, I went downstairs and stood by the dining table, staring at the mango tarts in front of me.

Simon and I shared the same body, but we had different souls.

That meant our bodies reacted differently too.

He loved mangoes. I was severely allergic to them.

I loved durian. He hated the smell of it.

But no matter which one of us was awake, the table was always filled with Simon's favorite foods.

I looked up and asked, "Did you forget I'm allergic to mangoes?"

Carla clicked her tongue.

"Why are you so picky? Simon can eat it, so why can't you? You're so difficult."

My heart ached.

"But I'm not Simon. I'm Harry!"

The room suddenly went silent. They all looked at one another. It was the first time they had ever seen me lose my temper.

Amanda quickly tried to calm things down.

"This is my fault. I forgot to tell the maid. I'll have them make something else right away."

Soon, fresh durian tarts came out of the oven.

I looked at them sadly. Even as I ate them, I couldn't taste a thing.

Carla looked at me in confusion.

"What's wrong with you today? Why are you in such a bad mood?"

I tightened my grip on my fork but said nothing.

To me, it wasn't a big surprise.

After watching them love only Simon and favor him over me for 20 years, I had finally given up.

I didn't want to be Simon's stepping stone and scapegoat anymore.

So, I decided that after one month, I would disappear from their lives forever.

Carla didn't really care what was wrong with me. When I stayed silent, she didn't ask again.

"Let's go."

An hour later, I stood outside a hospital room as Carla frowned and warned me.

"No matter what they do to you, just take it. Don't fight back. I want this whole thing settled within a month. Do you understand?"

I tightened my grip on the hem of my shirt and pushed the door open.

The moment I stepped inside, a metal thermos came flying at my head.

It slammed into my forehead, splitting my skin open as blood ran down my face.

At the same time, an angry roar filled the room.

"You monster! You almost killed my son, and you still have the nerve to show your face?"

Simon was knocked to the floor by the slap. He looked at Carla in disbelief."Carla?"He covered his swollen cheek as tears rolled down his face."You actually hit me?"Carla no longer spoiled him. There was only disgust in her eyes."You deserved it!"She shook her head in disappointment."Simon, all you ever want to do is have fun. You've become completely useless! Starting today, you're not going anywhere. I've already hired a private tutor for you."Simon froze. The moment he realized he would have to stay in the study and work every day, just like I had, he broke down crying."No! Carla, you can't do this to me! I don't want to live like Harry!"But Mick, Amanda, and Carla had already made up their minds. They dragged Simon into the study. Then they slammed the door shut and locked it.Afterward, Mick and Amanda returned to their room, hearts heavy with pain.Carla was no different. Without realizing it, she walked into the bedroom Simon and I had once shared. She let out a bitter

"Simon!"Carla panicked, but she didn't even look at him. Instead, she carefully picked up the broken straw pieces with trembling fingers.Simon was both angry and hurt. He quickly apologized, "Carla, I'm sorry."She glanced at his weak and guilty expression and suddenly felt disgusting.Without another word, she opened the door and went to find the fortune teller. Her voice shook as she asked, "Is there any way to bring Harry's soul back?"My whole body trembled. A sharp fear hit me.No. I don't want to go back. The fortune teller looked at Carla. Then he looked at me. I froze. He could see me? This surprised me.He said calmly. "No. It's not possible. Also, I forgot to tell you something. Both souls had one chance to choose death on their own. Harry chose it himself."After saying that, the fortune teller turned and left.Carla stood alone at the door, frozen and heartbroken. The thought that Harry had chosen to end his own life crushed her.She felt deep regret for everything they h

Carla froze for a moment, then quickly rushed downstairs to open the door.As expected, an elderly man with a refined aura stood outside, slowly shaking his head with a sigh.Carla stared at him in shock. The fortune teller walked inside and said, "Give me the straw."Amanda quickly handed it over.He took one look and said calmly, "The soul belonging to the long straw is no longer in that body. He may be dead, or he may be asleep. Either way, he is gone."Carla, Amanda, and Mick were all shaken. Their eyes widened in shock.Carla almost screamed."How is that possible? How could Harry just disappear like that?"She was starting to lose control."He was fine yesterday! How could something happen to him today?"I stood quietly nearby, watching. I only felt bitter irony.I didn't feel like they were sad because I was gone.It felt more like they were upset because Simon had lost a stepping stone and a scapegoat. The fortune teller spoke again, "I warned you back then. The entire room suddenly fell into a strange silence.Everyone stared at Simon in shock. Only after they were certain it was really him did they gasp.Mick and Amanda looked at each other."That's impossible! How is it Simon? We drew the long straw."Amanda frowned at Carla."Carla, did you draw the long straw or the short one last night? Did you make a mistake?"After calming down, Carla answered in a hoarse voice, "I personally drew the long straw."Now they were even more terrified."Then why did Simon wake up? What went wrong?"Carla shook her head. Her thoughts were a complete mess. She couldn't think straight. It felt as if something had slipped completely out of her control. The faster her heart pounded, the more uneasy she became.Simon still had no idea what was happening. Now that he had been chosen again, all he could think about was the hot PE class next month. He immediately lost his temper."Didn't I tell you to pick Harry? Why did you wake me up again? Aren't you able to

Time passed quickly, and soon it was the end of the month again.Simon had already fallen asleep. Mick, Amanda, and Carla sat in the next room, staring at the container."Logically, we should each get one month. Are we really going to rig it again?" Amanda asked with a frown.Carla thought for a moment before answering, "Pick the short one. The odds are never perfectly even anyway. Harry never questioned it all these years, did he? Whether we cheat or not, the result is the same. We'll pick the short one this time and the long one next time."Mick and Amanda nodded. When they drew the short straw, its power would wake Simon and put me back to sleep. After making the draw, they left.None of them noticed that this time, the straw had already cracked.I watched them with a mocking smile. I couldn't understand why they hated me so much. The next morning, Simon woke up with a huge grin.He ran downstairs and threw his arms around Carla."Yes! It's me again!"Mick and Amanda looked at him w

My soul separated from my body. For the first time, I was finally myself. Now Simon was the only one left inside that body.A moment later, I drifted over to my family.Carla held up the short straw from the drawing and smiled warmly. "Simon will wake up tomorrow."Then she seemed to remember something and frowned with worry."But Harry's injuries haven't healed yet. Simon will still have to feel the pain."She turned to Amanda. "Mom, call the doctor. Have some pain medicine ready. Simon has hated taking medicine since he was little."Amanda quickly nodded.I laughed bitterly. Yesterday, when I was still there, why hadn't they thought about treating my injuries?I felt pain too.Early the next morning, Simon opened his eyes and saw Mick, Amanda, and Carla waiting beside him.A wave of pain hit his body. His eyes quickly turned red, and he looked completely miserable."Carla, it hurts so much. Why didn't you let Harry finish healing before waking me up?"Amanda's eyes instantly filled w
