Emily’s POV
“This is Wales news. I am Clarion Johnson. First, we begin with sports. Information reaching us has it that the famous British hockey player Imelda Peterson has gone into a coma after a heinous headbutt injury in the field while playing for the British Tournament. Regrettably, this is happening at the wrong time, when the Hockey player, has just one week to be the lawfully wedded wife to Prince Reuben of the Wales Royalty…”
I snorted after turning off the television , just to avert more tears from trickling down my cheeks. I had never been so devastated in my life. The world seemed to have paused and I couldn’t feel my pulses anymore. A part of me had been crippled and my rain drops had turned to blood streams.
Ill fate had befallen Imelda Peterson. The talk was making the round and it became more than news because she was supposed to be the wife of Prince Reuben in a week’s time.
When I turned around, I saw my mother, Susan Peterson, standing in the door with folded arms and teary face. She had lost her beauty overnight and I knew it was traceable to the countless times she had wept for Imelda and the horrible ill fate that befell her.
Obviously, she had been there, staring at Imelda blankly, just as I have been doing for an hour now. This was a big blow on our faces and we were locked in our gloom, wondering what fate had in store for her.
The oxygen machines were beeping, alarms were echoing and on the screen were no signs of breath emanating from Imelda. My twin sister, was between needles and pins, battling with life’s painful strokes. What sort of life is this?
Mom pulled to my side, sniffed heavily and tossed her head in absolute uncertainty. We were the only consolation she had after the demise of our father. She couldn’t afford to lose either of us.
“Did the doctor say any other thing?” she asked with sorrow on her face and hopelessness clouding her eyes.
I tossed my head in disapproval, lacking words to reply her and losing myself to misery and loss. I didn’t want to lose my twin sister. I was drowned within my thought where all this was headed.
Her words seemed to be heavy on her lips and more investigative than it seemed a while ago. Just like me, mom wanted a miracle, and when I peeped through the window , I saw a handful of fans , all holding a placard , engraved with the lettering m, WAKE UP IMELDA.
More tears ran down my cheeks as I gazed at Imelda struggle with life under the oxygen mask.
“The doctor said she could wake up in a week’s time,” I reminded my mother as if she had forgotten.
“Why now?” mom whispered in a teary tone. She kept tossing her head as she sobbed uncontrollably.
“Perk up, mom,” I intoned, rubbing her arm and petting her “She is going to wake up,” I added.
Those latter words were heavy on my lips. The doctor said it was a temporarily coma. But how temporary was it.
The fact was that without my twin sister, the British hockey tournament would continue and it did. I was yet to understand how she lost her helmet and an attacker smashed her heads with the bat.
This was among the mysterious tragedy of life that I would never understand, but I wished the tragedies of life would understand that Imelda had just one week to go.
Yes, one week to be the lawfully wedded wife and Princess to Prince Reuben Jacobson, the only prince of the Wales Royalty. This was the version of the tragedy I hated to hear.
“Has the queen been here?” my mother asked, inquisitively, her arms trembling as they approached Imelda’s
I tossed my head in disapproval and sniffed back the urge to shed more tears. I knew what she wanted to ask now she had mentioned the queen. I knew it was about the wedding between Imelda and the prince in a week’s time.
Our gaze met when she broke down in tears again and dropped her face on my shoulders.
“Emily,” she wailed, her warm tears had dropped so much on my shoulders that it burned now.
“This can’t be happening now. What sort of ill fate is this?”
While she was weeping we could hear some shuffling towards the door.
Our gaze was anticipating as we blinked curiously at the door. A palace guard walked in and announced the presence of the queen.
She was Queen Theresa Jacobson, the first, looking ravishingly spotless in her royal robe and splendor, her face radiating eminence and honor.
Mom and I bowed in reverence and mom who couldn’t control her emotion, sobbed so greatly that the queen mother walked to her side to pet her.
“Perk up, Susan.” she said, almost being selective with her words as if to remind us Imelda was going to make it.
“What about the prince?” my mom asked and returned her gaze on Imelda, just as the Queen had done the same.
“He is heartbroken. He refused to join us to the hospital. I just met with the doctor and he said Imelda will wake up in a week time,” she said, staring at me now, and seeing Imelda in me.
Virtually everyone did the same; they saw Imelda in me and vice versa. We were identical twins ‘ identical in all ramifications; shape , hair curves and even in tone ; except career.
While she was a Hockey player, I was a bank manager at Wales Bank.
“I have only heard of Imelda’s twin sister, but this is my first time of seeing her in flesh and blood,” the queen remarked.
And I bowed in reverence, swallowed hard, wondering why her gaze fed into my face as if she was considering a thought.
She held my mom firmly, her gaze still on me, “Please we must see tomorrow in the palace, you alone.”
Her gaze was still on me. I wondered what was about to happen…
When I got to the palace i had needles in my guts and was ready to off the gloves with the prince for not visiting Imelda. It was really heartbreaking that Prince Reuben hadn’t visited my sister ever since she went into a coma. The huge aroma of fried egg and salmon fish crept into my nose the moment i entered my room and my gaze came on the dish. With a huge sigh, I grabbed it and flushed into the toilet. My heart thudded with hurt as I gazed on Imelda’s picture. I could hear some voices in the corridor; obviously it was that of the prince and the guard, Marshal.I had noticed Marshal, the guard often stood on the corridor that separated my room from the prince’s room. He never left that spot, and I was beginning to believe he was there for a purpose.Prince Reuben shot an investigative gaze at Marshal, the moment their eyes locked. The prince was bare-chested in his white towel. For a moment he stared at the guard ignoring his salutation.“Do I still need to know that the queen kept
Mom left before I did. Already I had received tons of messages a from Prince Reuben, most of which bordered on my location and whether I was going to return to the palace.I didn’t return his message because already I was furious with him. I wondered why he would treat Imelda like a total stranger.I spent a couple of minutes to reflect on my strategy in this marriage and after reminding Imelda of my promised of keeping her marriage clean, I decided to leave for the palace.About stepping out of the ward I almost bumped into a young tall huge man. He was in the British hockey Jersey. His hair was ponytailed and greasily-pressed. The resemblance struck in my head. Imelda had told me so much about him.. He was Samson Rowland, the active coach to Imelda. One thing that struck my mind when I saw this magnificent man was that Imelda had told me on several occasions , he asked her out and even a week to her accident he had proposed to her in the dress room.Looking at Samson, with his crims
With my sack letter in one hand and a get-well-soon card in the other, I stared at Imelda who was still helpless under the oxygen mask. The fact was that I wanted to weep but there were no tears. My face grew gravy as I shut my eyes in pain and then dropped the card by the side of the bed, where others were.“I have just lost my job, Imelda, also David has broken up with me,” my lone voice whispered to her as if she could hear me and sympathize with me. But that had been my decision. Any time I am around to pass the night, I often treated her as if she was conscious.I knew my twin sister wasn’t dead. She could hear me and soon she would trump up to life. So I had to tell her David had sacked me and called off our relationship. This was a relationship of five years. We had one month to go; just one month to become married couple. I didn’t expect our break up to come in this maxim; it was so shameful and maddening; David demanded for his diamond engagement ring?Oh my God!He had stole
Only an obsessive soul could explain why I often wake up to behold hot aromatic breakfast smiling at me by the bed side. For the past few weeks, it has recurred. Prince Reuben was fond of preparing my breakfast and serving me in bed. This morning a knock on my door woke me up and when I answered, there he was standing and glistening with a contagious smile. Most times, I wondered if those smiles ever left his face, or it was just because of me.Several times I had told myself he was ugly just to repel him but truth be told Prince Reuben was a cute young man to behold; his long nose and sizable lips were perfectly created in tandem with his green brooding eyes. I knew he must have pulled girls with those eyes features.Although he had the features any girl could crave in men, it wasn’t my problem because my boyfriend had better features.David was my obsession. I really loved David.“I didn’t want to disturb your sleep to ask you what you would love for breakfast,” That was the voice o
Prince Reuben was swallowed into a blank gaze as he sat to his cocktail at the royal bar. These days he was full of thought and his nightmares has stolen sleep from his eyes.To the royalty of Wales and onlookers, Imelda was unfortunate but in the literal pragmatic way, Prince Reuben felt he was mere unfortunate.Days past he had been put on the chokehold, analyzing and processing this ill fate. What he thought he had overcome had recurred with a thick shadow. How he got hold of my photo was what I couldn’t fathom but the fact was that he hardly spent a minuet without staring at my photo. But was it was it supposed to be so?Wasn’t he supposed to be staring at his wife’s photo?Prince Reuben needed to talk to someone about something and once Kelly’s carriage came in sight, the breath of relief snorted through his nose.Kelly Isaac was his cousin, and his childhood buddy too. They had grown to keep their bonding so well that onlookers thought Kelly was the younger prince. They discusse
Emily’s POVThe dawn of the day struck me with the light of reality and waking up under the royal roof of the Wales made me long for the appearance of my twin sister sooner than expected.I could still recall Imelda telling me after her successful career in hockey, she would want to be a dutiful royal wife to the prince. She had craved royalty and she was bent on getting it but ill fate said otherwise. Her sizable picture was always at the edge of my bed and keeping her marriage was the only sacrifice I owed a twin sister that had given me her all, yes her all in ramifications. This morning as I dressed up for work , the scar on the right side of my stomach replayed that moment Imelda held my face in the hospital bed and told me, “I will donate one of my kidneys to you. We don’t need to search any further for an eligible donor.”Although I fought back tears and dared to fit into this marriage, my eyes reddened with shades of anticipation for Imelda s’ redemption from that coma. I did
