Chapter 2

Penulis: Aster Ling
One Friday afternoon, Bella came home from preschool. She held up a drawing to me before she could even put down her backpack.

"My teacher said we're going to have a craft project! The theme is 'My Family'!"

She had drawn Alfred tall, holding her hand, and even glued a little sun beside him.

"Do you think Daddy will like it?"

"I'm sure he will."

She couldn't fall asleep that night. Every time she heard the elevator chime, she ran to the front door to check, but the people who arrived were not the ones she was waiting for.

When Alfred finally came home, he said, "Oh, you're still awake, Bella. Daryl is in a bad mood today, so I brought him over to borrow some comic books. We'll leave in a minute."

Bella nodded and stepped aside, while Daryl raised his brows and intentionally held the drawing up high. "Mr. Manning took me to the arcade today, and he said he'll take me go-kart racing next time. Have you ever been there?"

Bella's hands dropped to her sides. "No."

"Well, I guess your dad doesn't love you that much either!"

Standing at the doorway, I heard every word and noticed Bella's eyes turning red-rimmed as she bit her lip tightly.

Alfred gently comforted her, saying, "Just because I praise Daryl doesn't mean I don't love you, Bella. Love can be shared among many people."

I walked over and took the drawing from his hand. "Come with me, Bella."

The moment the bedroom door clicked shut, Bella couldn't hold back her tears any longer. "Mommy, am I not allowed to ask Daddy to spend time with me?"

"Of course not," I said, pulling her into my arms.

"But when Daddy spends time with other people, I feel sad, which makes me a bad girl… So, I won't say it anymore."

Her thoughtfulness and understanding seemed to crush my heart and rattle me. I knew that children buried pain deep within their bodies, and I couldn't let that happen.

One morning, Alfred tagged along to the hospital for a follow-up on my back injury. Our turn was just called when his phone rang.

"I just saw his aunt outside the community gates, Alfred! She kept staring at me, and I'm terrified to go home. Daryl is so scared that he's crying, too…"

The call ended as my number flashed on the screen.

"I'll be back very soon, honey," Alfred said. "Your condition isn't an emergency, but if Edna gets triggered, it might even cost her her life!"

The nurse standing at the door of the doctor's office called my name as he hurried away.

After completing all the tests, I sat in the hallway waiting for my report. The morning crowd gradually thinned out, replaced by groups of new patients.

A pregnant woman sat down, resting her hands on her lower back while her husband dashed off to buy her a drink. An elderly man struggled to stand steadily, while his daughter half-knelt to tie his shoelaces.

It felt as though everyone but Alfred had an innate instinct to protect and care for the people they loved.

It was past 3:00 pm when he finally returned, holding a warm drink.

"I got you some warm spiced cider! I'm sorry. Edna was really terrified. Her ex-husband's relatives tried to mess with her, so I had to deal with it."

I looked down at the medical report, where the doctor had written clear advice. "Avoid prolonged standing and heavy lifting. Schedule regular follow-up visits."

But to Alfred, my pain was significant. It could always wait.

When we got home, Bella was in the living room practicing her writing.

"Did you see the doctor, Mommy? Did Daddy stay with you?" she asked carefully while I adjusted her crooked hair clip.

"He stayed for a little while."

She studied my face, as if trying to decide whether I was lying, then pressed her lips together and dropped the subject.

After Alfred stepped out of the shower, he found me sitting in front of the laptop. The screen displayed information about Bella's school.

He wrapped his arms around me from behind. "Are you still working, honey?"

"Yeah," I said, closing the browser tab.

He chuckled, and his voice turned slightly placating as he continued, "Thanks for your hard work, honey. I don't know what we'd do without you keeping the family running."

I used to fall for that. A few sweet words were all it took to make me swallow the hurt I felt all night.

He kissed my cheek. "Don't work too hard. I'll take you and Bella out for dinner tomorrow."

"Are you sure?"

He was briefly stunned. "Of course I am."

I didn't say anything else because I was done betting Bella's hopes on his "of course".

After he fell asleep, I turned on my laptop again. The screen showed a template for a divorce agreement.

Soft footsteps came from outside the bedroom door. When I turned around, I saw Bella standing there, holding her stuffed toy.

"I can't sleep, Mommy."

She walked over and climbed into my arms. "From now on, can I just draw the two of us when I draw my family?"

It felt like something gently pricked my heart.

Looking at the tear stains still clinging to her eyelashes, I belatedly realized that some decisions didn't have to be earth-shattering. Sometimes, they happened on a random midnight, when Bella asked if she could erase her father from a drawing.

I realized I could no longer say no.

After Alfred cut off all of Edna's support, she started crying to their mutual friends, weeping and lamenting about her miserable life. She claimed that as a divorced mother trying to raise a child, her life was tough enough. Now, she was being misunderstood on top of everything else. She knew how to tell a story that stirred sympathy, but Paula didn't give her the chance to keep up the act.She publicly released the evidence and gave Edna a taste of her own medicine by exaggerating the details and turning the narrative back on her.Women who had truly survived domestic abuse and tried hard to rebuild their lives were deeply repulsed by Edna's behavior."Don't use our trauma to excuse your malice.""Anyone who's escaped real violence knows how painful it is for a child to be terrified.""Being pitiful is not a free pass."The backlash went on and on. Edna's ex-husband was dragged into the controversy as well.Soon after, Daryl's maternal grandma came to take him away. Her hair

I laid out the visitation schedule clearly. It would be three times a week, with the location chosen by Bella.Alfred booked an expensive restaurant. The children's menu was beautifully crafted, featuring teddy-bear shortbread pastries and a chocolate fountain. But after looking at the photos, Bella shook her head. "I have to wash my white sneakers with Mommy on Wednesday night."Alfred was briefly stunned. "You can wash your shoes tomorrow."She answered even more seriously, "Thursday is sports day at school. I need clean shoes."Then, as if she were worried about hurting his feelings, she added, "You can have sandwiches with me at the bakery downstairs instead, Daddy."As Alfred looked at her, his chest throbbed painfully. He had missed her birthdays, the entire summer she spent collecting gold stars, and now, even a trivial chore like washing sneakers took priority over him.Her life had formed a clear set of priorities, which inadvertently caused him pain.Later that week,

Alfred finally tracked us down just as I was leading Bella out of a grocery store. She cradled a bag of apples in her arms, while I carried milk and a loaf of bread. She spent the entire walk home earnestly discussing dinner plans."Mommy, can we have apple pancakes tonight?""Of course we can.""Can I take a piece to school tomorrow morning, too?""Only if you pack it into your lunchbox yourself.""I'll pack two! The bigger piece is for you!" she squealed and made a silly face at me.The traffic lights turned red, and we waited at the edge of the crosswalk. Suddenly, Bella leaned in closer to my side and stopped talking. When I followed her gaze and looked across the street, I found Alfred standing on the opposite sidewalk. He had lost a lot of weight.Wrapped in his trench coat, he looked like a man who had stepped out of an old dream with blurred facial features. When the light turned green and the crowd started moving forward, Bella quietly called out, "Daddy."Though I

After I left, Edna started pestering Alfred even more often."I made you some soup, Alfred. You haven't looked well lately, and you can't survive just on coffee."It was slow-simmered bone broth, which I used to make all the time. Alfred froze the moment he lifted the lid and smelled the familiar aroma.Edna acted as though she hadn't noticed his reaction. "Olivia used to make this for you all the time, didn't she? I was worried it wouldn't taste the same, so I asked for the recipe."But she quickly lowered her head. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought her up."Later, she reminded him to bring an umbrella and stop drinking iced water. At 9:00 pm every evening, Daryl would send him voice notes. "When are you coming home, Daddy Alfred?"But there was no room for the mother and son in the family, and Alfred wasn't Daryl's father, either. When Edna came the next day, she took a seat across from him and stole careful, cautious looks at his face. "Daryl said the wrong thing yesterda

After the plane touched down in Harlock, Bella blearily opened her eyes. "Are we going to stay here from now on, Mommy?"I pulled her scarf a little higher around her neck. "That's right.""Will there be anyone here who steals my gold stars?" she asked, looking completely serious. My heart ached. "No. No one will."Our new apartment sat on the edge of the old town district. There was a bakery downstairs, and every morning, the rich, warm scent of butter and fresh coffee would drift up through our windows. The kitchen windows caught the direct sunlight. The bathroom was tiny. There was barely enough room on the edge of the sink to fit a toothbrush cup, but Bella loved it.For the first time in her life, she was given the freedom to choose her curtains, so she picked out a soft pastel yellow."When I wake up in the morning, it'll feel like being hugged by the sun."I didn't rush her into adapting to our new life. Instead, I held her hand and walked her through the neighborhood to

Daryl shrieked in terror while Alfred was stunned and frozen."Mom?"Edna covered her face as tears welled up in her eyes. "Mrs. Manning—"Paula Banks raised her hand and cut her off, "Don't call me that. We aren't close at all!"Alfred immediately rushed forward and asked, "Why are you here, Mom?"Paula didn't even look at him. Instead, her eyes stayed fixed on Edna."If your son needs a father so badly, track down his biological dad. What is he doing? Trying to take someone else's?"She reached into her bag, pulled out a stack of photos, and hurled them onto the floor."Stop crying! Tears might work on men, but they don't work on me, so save it!"Trembling, Daryl scrambled to hide behind Edna.Paula continued, "When I got divorced years ago, I had it worse than you. My husband cheated, my in-laws stole my money, my company was falling apart, and my son was just six years old. "I didn't go running to someone else's house to play the victim, and I certainly didn't teach my
