Chapter 3

Penulis: Aster Ling
On Bella's birthday, I took half a day off work.

She had picked out her cake herself, with a white sugar bunny lying on top of the frosting. She had also invited a few of her closest friends over for a party.

Starting at 4:00 pm, she ran back and forth to the front door. "Is that Daddy coming home?"

Alfred had promised her he would come back early that day to place the birthday crown on her head and stay by her side while she made a wish.

By 5:30 pm, her friends had gradually arrived, but she still kept looking toward the door.

Moments later, Alfred sent me a voice message. "Something went wrong on Edna's end, honey. Daryl saw another family of three and had a sudden emotional breakdown. Now, he's locked himself in the mall's nursing room and refuses to open the door, no matter what we say."

Holding my phone, I looked over at the living room, where Bella was picking up her birthday crown, only to set it back down.

He continued, "Go ahead and help Bella cut the cake first. Don't keep the other kids waiting."

After a brief pause, he added, "She can always celebrate her birthday next year, but it'll be much harder to fix Daryl's trauma if he's scared. Bella has always been sensible, so help me explain to her."

Bella ran over and looked up at me. "Was that Daddy?"

I turned off the screen. "It was just a spam call."

The smile on her face slowly stiffened. "Is he still coming home?"

Fixing the bow on the back of her dress, I asked, "Shall we cut the cake together, just you and me?"

She quietly picked up the birthday crown and placed it on her head. The tiny candle flame flickered, casting a watery reflection in her eyes.

After some guests left, she carefully asked, "Mommy, do I need to cry really hard for Daddy to come home?"

Reaching out, I pulled her into my arms and could feel my heart bleeding for her. "This isn't your fault, Bella."

She buried herself in my chest, crying silently.

A child learning to hold back her tears on her birthday was too cruel.

By the time we finished seeing everyone off, it was nearly 9:00 pm. I packed away the remaining cake into a box, wiped the frosting off the table, and cleaned up the balloons and confetti scattered across the floor.

I had been running a low fever since that morning, and at this point, my back was slick with cold sweat.

Bella sat on the couch, holding the teddy bear someone had given her. She was still wearing her birthday crown.

"Are you sleepy?" I asked.

She nodded. "When Daddy comes home, will he still put the birthday crown on me?"

But Alfred never came home.

Bella suddenly spiked a fever in the middle of the night. I called Alfred over and over, but the line just kept ringing before the call was sent straight to voicemail.

The pediatric ER at midnight was a chaotic chorus of children's crying.

Burning up and miserable, Bella gripped my collar tightly and murmured, "It hurts so much, Mommy."

The exhaustion from my own fever and the sudden crash of low blood sugar hit me all at once, but I couldn't afford to collapse. Bella only had me.

At 3:00 am, my phone finally rang.

"Daryl wouldn't stop crying, and my phone was on silent. What's going on?"

Before I could say a word, Edna shrieked in the background, "Daryl is asking for you again, Alfred! He won't let me touch him!"

He panicked so much that he didn't give me a chance to speak. "Just take care of Bella for now. I can't walk away from—"

"Do you even remember that today is Bella's birthday?"

The anger in my voice made him pause before hanging up. "I know. I'll make it up to her later."

During the latter half of the night, Bella woke up once while her IV drip was still running. She opened her eyes and saw that only I was there.

"Mommy… Is Daddy happier being someone else's daddy?"

I held her burning little hand, but before I could answer, she closed her eyes and fell asleep again. Her question stayed with me and echoed through the walls of the ER.

I carried her home after sunrise. The doorbell rang moments after we walked through the door.

Edna stood outside, holding Daryl by the hand. She held up a basket of fruit and apologized.

"I'm so sorry about last night, Olivia! Alfred stayed up so late helping us out. I hope we didn't cause you too much trouble."

Daryl was holding a huge box of building blocks. It was the limited-edition space station kit, which was the first item on Bella's birthday wishlist.

She had spent hours writing that list. After she was done, she taped it to the fridge and even circled the item in red, saying, "Daddy's really good at buying toys. He'll definitely understand."

Daryl deliberately lifted the box higher. "Mr. Manning bought it for me!"

Bella leaned against me, and all the color drained from her face.

After Alfred cut off all of Edna's support, she started crying to their mutual friends, weeping and lamenting about her miserable life. She claimed that as a divorced mother trying to raise a child, her life was tough enough. Now, she was being misunderstood on top of everything else. She knew how to tell a story that stirred sympathy, but Paula didn't give her the chance to keep up the act.She publicly released the evidence and gave Edna a taste of her own medicine by exaggerating the details and turning the narrative back on her.Women who had truly survived domestic abuse and tried hard to rebuild their lives were deeply repulsed by Edna's behavior."Don't use our trauma to excuse your malice.""Anyone who's escaped real violence knows how painful it is for a child to be terrified.""Being pitiful is not a free pass."The backlash went on and on. Edna's ex-husband was dragged into the controversy as well.Soon after, Daryl's maternal grandma came to take him away. Her hair

I laid out the visitation schedule clearly. It would be three times a week, with the location chosen by Bella.Alfred booked an expensive restaurant. The children's menu was beautifully crafted, featuring teddy-bear shortbread pastries and a chocolate fountain. But after looking at the photos, Bella shook her head. "I have to wash my white sneakers with Mommy on Wednesday night."Alfred was briefly stunned. "You can wash your shoes tomorrow."She answered even more seriously, "Thursday is sports day at school. I need clean shoes."Then, as if she were worried about hurting his feelings, she added, "You can have sandwiches with me at the bakery downstairs instead, Daddy."As Alfred looked at her, his chest throbbed painfully. He had missed her birthdays, the entire summer she spent collecting gold stars, and now, even a trivial chore like washing sneakers took priority over him.Her life had formed a clear set of priorities, which inadvertently caused him pain.Later that week,

Alfred finally tracked us down just as I was leading Bella out of a grocery store. She cradled a bag of apples in her arms, while I carried milk and a loaf of bread. She spent the entire walk home earnestly discussing dinner plans."Mommy, can we have apple pancakes tonight?""Of course we can.""Can I take a piece to school tomorrow morning, too?""Only if you pack it into your lunchbox yourself.""I'll pack two! The bigger piece is for you!" she squealed and made a silly face at me.The traffic lights turned red, and we waited at the edge of the crosswalk. Suddenly, Bella leaned in closer to my side and stopped talking. When I followed her gaze and looked across the street, I found Alfred standing on the opposite sidewalk. He had lost a lot of weight.Wrapped in his trench coat, he looked like a man who had stepped out of an old dream with blurred facial features. When the light turned green and the crowd started moving forward, Bella quietly called out, "Daddy."Though I

After I left, Edna started pestering Alfred even more often."I made you some soup, Alfred. You haven't looked well lately, and you can't survive just on coffee."It was slow-simmered bone broth, which I used to make all the time. Alfred froze the moment he lifted the lid and smelled the familiar aroma.Edna acted as though she hadn't noticed his reaction. "Olivia used to make this for you all the time, didn't she? I was worried it wouldn't taste the same, so I asked for the recipe."But she quickly lowered her head. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought her up."Later, she reminded him to bring an umbrella and stop drinking iced water. At 9:00 pm every evening, Daryl would send him voice notes. "When are you coming home, Daddy Alfred?"But there was no room for the mother and son in the family, and Alfred wasn't Daryl's father, either. When Edna came the next day, she took a seat across from him and stole careful, cautious looks at his face. "Daryl said the wrong thing yesterda

After the plane touched down in Harlock, Bella blearily opened her eyes. "Are we going to stay here from now on, Mommy?"I pulled her scarf a little higher around her neck. "That's right.""Will there be anyone here who steals my gold stars?" she asked, looking completely serious. My heart ached. "No. No one will."Our new apartment sat on the edge of the old town district. There was a bakery downstairs, and every morning, the rich, warm scent of butter and fresh coffee would drift up through our windows. The kitchen windows caught the direct sunlight. The bathroom was tiny. There was barely enough room on the edge of the sink to fit a toothbrush cup, but Bella loved it.For the first time in her life, she was given the freedom to choose her curtains, so she picked out a soft pastel yellow."When I wake up in the morning, it'll feel like being hugged by the sun."I didn't rush her into adapting to our new life. Instead, I held her hand and walked her through the neighborhood to

Daryl shrieked in terror while Alfred was stunned and frozen."Mom?"Edna covered her face as tears welled up in her eyes. "Mrs. Manning—"Paula Banks raised her hand and cut her off, "Don't call me that. We aren't close at all!"Alfred immediately rushed forward and asked, "Why are you here, Mom?"Paula didn't even look at him. Instead, her eyes stayed fixed on Edna."If your son needs a father so badly, track down his biological dad. What is he doing? Trying to take someone else's?"She reached into her bag, pulled out a stack of photos, and hurled them onto the floor."Stop crying! Tears might work on men, but they don't work on me, so save it!"Trembling, Daryl scrambled to hide behind Edna.Paula continued, "When I got divorced years ago, I had it worse than you. My husband cheated, my in-laws stole my money, my company was falling apart, and my son was just six years old. "I didn't go running to someone else's house to play the victim, and I certainly didn't teach my
