Chapter 2

last update publish date: 2026-05-27 17:50:49

Elena’s fingers tightened around the stone railing until her knuckles bleached white. The night air, once a welcome relief, now felt thick and suffocating. She didn’t need to turn around to know who stood behind her. That voice—low, velvet-wrapped steel—had haunted her for years.

Cassian Hale.

Slowly, she faced him. He leaned against the terrace doorframe, arms crossed over his broad chest, the tailored black shirt of his suit doing nothing to hide the coiled power beneath. At twenty-six, he looked every inch the ruthless heir: sharp jaw shadowed by stubble, stormy gray eyes that could freeze fire, and a mouth currently twisted in a sneer that promised retribution. The party’s golden light spilled across his dark hair, making him look like some avenging angel who had decided heaven wasn’t enough.

“Care to repeat that, *stepsister*?” he repeated, each word dripping with lethal calm.

Elena swallowed hard. Her heart slammed against her ribs like it wanted to escape. “Cassian… I didn’t know you were—”

“Obviously.” He pushed off the frame and stalked toward her, slow, deliberate steps that made her back up until the railing dug into her spine. “Because if you had, you wouldn’t have been stupid enough to tell the entire elite circle of this city that I’ve been fucking you since the wedding.”

The crude word sent heat rushing to her face. She had never heard him speak like that to her before. Their fights were always icy barbs and cutting remarks, never this raw.

“It was a lie,” she whispered, glancing toward the glass doors. No one had followed yet, but the whispers inside would spread like wildfire. “Jake and his friends were tearing me apart. They—”

“So you decided to make me your shield?” His laugh was cold, humorless. “Or was it a weapon? Tell me, Elena, which one of us are you trying to destroy tonight?”

He stopped barely a foot away. Up close, she could smell his cologne—dark cedar and something sharper, like the edge of a blade. She remembered the first time she had truly noticed him as more than the angry boy on the stairs. She had been fourteen, he eighteen. He had come home from boarding school for summer break, taller, colder, devastatingly handsome in that terrifying way. She had offered him a peace offering—a handmade birthday card for the sister whose death still haunted the house. He had torn it in half without reading it.

“You’ll never replace her,” he had said then, voice flat. “Stop trying.”

That rejection had calcified something in her. From then on, she fought back. Every insult, every slammed door, every public slight—she returned them doubled. Their mother cried in private. Their father, Richard, simply sighed and poured another whiskey, muttering about “youthful rivalry.”

“I wasn’t trying to destroy you,” Elena said now, lifting her chin despite the way her legs trembled. “I panicked. You know what it’s like in there. One wrong move and they tear you apart. Jake already cost me the internship at Meridian because I wouldn’t sleep with him. They call me the frigid little orphan who got lucky with the Hale name. I just… I wanted them to shut up.”

Cassian’s eyes darkened. For a second, something almost like understanding flickered across his face—then it vanished behind fury. “So you chose the one lie that would ruin both of us. Brilliant.”

He grabbed her wrist, not hard enough to bruise but firm enough that she couldn’t pull away. “Inside. Now.”

“Cassian—”

“Unless you want me to announce to everyone that my dear stepsister is a desperate liar who wishes she could get in my bed.”

The threat landed like a slap. Elena let him pull her through the terrace doors and across the edge of the ballroom. Heads turned. Phones discreetly rose again. She kept her expression neutral, the practiced mask she had perfected over years of living in this gilded cage. Cassian’s grip was iron, his pace brisk but controlled. To outsiders, it might have looked possessive. Romantic, even.

God, the irony.

He led her up the wide marble staircase of the Hale mansion—the same one where they had first met—and down the east wing corridor toward his private suite. The party noise faded behind them, replaced by the heavy silence of old wealth and older grudges.

The moment the door to his rooms closed, he released her like she burned him.

“Start talking,” he ordered, shrugging off his suit jacket and tossing it over a leather chair. “Every detail. Who heard you? What exactly did you say?”

Elena rubbed her wrist, though it didn’t hurt. She wandered a few steps into the familiar space—dark wood, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens, bookshelves lined with business tomes and hidden bottles of expensive whiskey. She had only been in here a handful of times, usually to steal something petty during one of their wars.

“I said we’ve been together since the wedding,” she admitted quietly. “That you can’t keep your hands off me. Jake called me a virgin in front of everyone. Again. And his uncle… the internship meant everything. I was tired of being the joke.”

Cassian stared at her for a long moment. Then he dragged a hand through his hair, mussing the perfect style. “You stupid, reckless girl.”

The words should have stung. Instead, they ignited something defiant in her chest. “I’m not a girl anymore, Cassian. I’m twenty-two. And unlike you, I don’t have a trust fund and a last name that opens every door. Some of us have to fight dirty.”

“Fight dirty?” He stepped closer again, backing her toward the heavy oak desk. “You dragged *me* into your filth. My reputation is built on control. Precision. Not fucking my stepsister like some depraved cliché.”

Elena’s back hit the desk. She gripped the edge, refusing to cower. “Then deny it. Call me a liar tomorrow morning. Tell everyone I made it up because I’m obsessed with you or whatever story you want. I’ll play along.”

He braced one hand on the desk beside her hip, leaning in. Their faces were inches apart. She could see the flecks of silver in his gray eyes, the faint scar above his left eyebrow from the time they had fought so viciously over nothing that he’d tripped on the stairs.

“You think it’s that simple?” His voice dropped, rougher. “Half those people downstairs have already texted their parents. By morning, my father will know. Your mother will know. And they’ve spent fourteen years praying we’d stop hating each other long enough to become family.”

The reminder of their parents sent a pang through her. Sophia, her adoptive mother, still set two extra places at the family table every holiday, hoping. Richard kept photos of Cassian’s late sister in his study but never spoke her name. The grief had poisoned everything.

“Maybe this will finally make them stop hoping,” Elena murmured bitterly.

Cassian’s gaze dropped to her mouth for a fraction of a second. Then he straightened abruptly, as if burned.

“No,” he said. “We’re going to fix this my way. You will stay in this house for the next two weeks. No leaving unless I’m with you. We’ll give them just enough public appearances to make your lie believable—then we’ll stage a quiet, private breakup that makes you look like the victim. Sympathy card. You get your precious reputation back, and I never have to hear my stepsister’s name in the same sentence as my bed again.”

Elena’s stomach twisted. Two weeks pretending? Forced proximity with the man who had made her life a battlefield since she was eight?

“That sounds like hell,” she said.

“Good.” His smile was sharp. “Consider it your punishment, little liar. Every touch, every lingering look, every whispered endearment in public—you’ll earn them. And you’ll remember exactly who holds the power here.”

He turned toward the bar cart, pouring two fingers of whiskey. His hand wasn’t quite steady.

Elena watched the rigid line of his shoulders and felt the first real spark of fear—not of him, but of the dangerous electricity crackling between them. For years they had clashed like enemies. Now the battlefield had shifted, and the weapons felt suddenly intimate.

She lifted her chin. “And if I refuse?”

Cassian glanced back, eyes gleaming with dark promise. “Then I’ll make sure everyone knows exactly how pathetic your lie was. Starting with Jake. I’ll destroy the little empire his family is building. And you’ll watch.”

The threat hung in the air, heavy and real. Cassian Hale didn’t bluff.

Elena exhaled shakily. “Fine. Two weeks. Then we end it.”

He raised his glass in a mocking toast. “To family.”

As she watched him drink, the memory of his first cruel words on the staircase echoed in her mind. *You’ll never be my sister.*

Tonight, he had ensured she never could be. And something in the way his eyes lingered told her the real war was only beginning.

The new evidence from the warehouse files had changed everything and nothing at the same time. Elena and Cassian spent the entire next day locked in the study, going through every page, every transaction, every damning connection. The proof was overwhelming. Richard hadn’t just covered up Amelia’s death he had built a shadow network of silence, payoffs, and threats that spanned years.By evening, the moral weight of it all had become unbearable.Elena stood by the window, staring out at the darkening gardens. The old oak tree was barely visible in the twilight. “We can’t ignore this,” she said quietly. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. This is years of crimes. People were hurt. Silenced. And I was part of it the replacement they bought to keep their empire intact.”Cassian sat at the desk, the files spread before him like a battlefield. He looked exhausted, the conflict raging visibly across his face. “I know,” he said, voice rough. “But e

The warehouse files arrived the next morning in a sealed envelope delivered by their private detective. Elena and Cassian sat together in the study, the thick folder between them like a live grenade. The new evidence was devastating not just confirmation of the accident cover-up, but clear links showing Richard had orchestrated larger crimes: money laundering through shell companies, silencing witnesses, and even connections to the Langfords’ recent attacks.Elena’s hands trembled as she flipped through the pages. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. He’s been running this family like a criminal empire for years. The payments to my mother, the contingency plans for me… it was all part of something much bigger.”Cassian stared at the documents, his face pale. The evidence linked his father directly to crimes that could send him to prison for decades. The moral dilemma they had argued about the night before now had concrete proof backing it.“We

The moral dilemma had been simmering beneath the surface for weeks, but it finally broke into the open two days after the gala. Elena and Cassian sat in the study with the full detective report spread across the table between them. The documents were damning clear evidence of Richard’s direct involvement in the accident cover-up, the payments to Mara, and the contingency plans to silence Elena if she ever became a threat.Elena stared at the papers, her hands trembling slightly. “We have to expose him,” she said quietly, voice steady despite the storm inside her. “The truth has to come out. The board, the public, the courts they all need to know what he did. What they both did to me, to Lucas, to your sister.”Cassian leaned back in his chair, dragging a hand through his hair. His expression was conflicted, the same internal war she had seen since the beginning. “If we do this, it’s over. The company. The family name. Everything my father built. He coul

  • TANGLED VOW    Chapter 20

The gala had left a bitter taste that lingered for days. Elena spent most of her time in the small sitting room off the main library, a space she had claimed as her own since moving into the estate. The guilt that had been building since the party lie now felt like a living thing inside her chest, heavy and unrelenting. She sat at the antique desk with a blank sheet of paper in front of her. The pen felt heavy in her hand. For the past hour, she had been drafting and redrafting the same letter.Cassian,I can’t keep doing this. The lie I told at the party has spiraled into something that is destroying both of us. You defend me in boardrooms and kiss me like I matter, but you still see me as temporary. As the replacement who ruined your family. I won’t be the reason you lose everything. I’m ending the engagement. I’ll take the blame. Tell the board whatever you need to. I’m sorry for everything. She stared at the words, tears blurring the ink. She didn’t send it. She didn’t even finish

The gala was supposed to be a strategic move — a public show of strength after the board meeting and the Langfords’ escalating threats. Elena had agreed to attend only because Cassian insisted they needed to appear united. Now, as they walked into the glittering ballroom, she regretted it.Cassian’s hand rested possessively on her lower back, guiding her through the crowd. He looked impeccable in his tailored black tuxedo, but the tension in his shoulders told her he was on edge. Their tense alliance from the investigation the day before had brought a fragile peace, but the overheard conversation and her guilt still hung between them like a shadow. They had barely spoken on the drive over. Elena felt the distance she had created, and part of her wondered if it was the right choice. But every time she looked at him, she remembered his words to Marcus “temporary,” “damage control.” The guilt wouldn’t let her forget. They were only twenty minutes into the event when the past arrived in

The investigation into the Langfords began the next morning, born from necessity rather than choice. Elena had returned to the estate after Lucas’s honest talk, but the emotional distance between her and Cassian remained like a visible wall. She still felt the sting of his words to Marcus, and he was still frustrated by her sudden withdrawal. They met in the study after breakfast. Cassian had already pulled files, security reports, and the latest detective updates. He stood at the head of the table, sleeves rolled up, looking every bit the strategic heir. Elena sat across from him, arms crossed, trying to keep her voice steady.“If we’re doing this,” she said, “we do it together. No more protecting me from the truth. I want to know everything.”Cassian studied her for a long moment, his gray eyes conflicted. “Fine. But we stay close. No more disappearing to hotels because you overheard one conversation.”The tension was immediate. Elena felt the familiar guilt rise, but she pushed it

The morning light stabbed through the heavy curtains of the guest room like an accusation. Elena lay staring at the ceiling, her silk nightdress twisted around her legs from a sleepless night. The argument exploded late that night. Elena had tried to keep quiet after reading the latest anonymous threat, but the guilt had become too loud. She couldn’t sleep. The days after the board meeting felt heavier than the warehouse bullets. Elena spent most of her time in the garden, sitting under the old oak tree where everything between her and Cassian had once begun with hatred. The bandage on her side was gone, but the guilt remained — raw, const
