Chapter 3

last update publish date: 2026-05-27 17:52:38

The morning light stabbed through the heavy curtains of the guest room like an accusation. Elena lay staring at the ceiling, her silk nightdress twisted around her legs from a sleepless night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Cassian’s stormy gaze and heard his mocking toast:

*To family.*

She had barely slept. The weight of her lie pressed on her chest like a stone. Two weeks of pretending. Two weeks of his rules, his proximity, his control.

A sharp knock on the door made her jolt upright.

“Breakfast in twenty minutes,” Cassian’s voice came through the wood, clipped and commanding. “Wear something that doesn’t make you look like you’re attending your own funeral. We’re selling this, remember?”

Elena clenched her jaw. “Go to hell, Cassian.”

A low, dangerous chuckle. “Already there, stepsister. And you’re coming with me.”

She dressed carefully— a soft cream blouse tucked into high-waisted navy trousers, delicate gold necklace, hair in loose waves. Respectable. Approachable. Not the desperate liar from last night. When she stepped into the sunlit breakfast room, the tension hit her like a physical wall.

Richard Hale sat at the head of the long mahogany table, newspaper in hand, his silver-streaked hair perfectly combed. Beside him, Sophia—Elena’s adoptive mother—poured coffee with trembling hands. Her eyes were red-rimmed. Cassian already occupied his usual seat, looking annoyingly composed in a charcoal button-down, sleeves rolled up to reveal strong forearms.

“Good morning,” Elena said, forcing brightness into her voice as she took the chair opposite Cassian.

Sophia’s gaze darted between them. “Elena… Cassian… Is it true?”

The question hung in the air. Richard lowered his newspaper slowly, his expression unreadable—the same look he wore during boardroom battles.

Cassian reached across the table before Elena could speak. His fingers brushed hers deliberately as he took her hand, the touch sending an unwelcome spark up her arm. “It is,” he said smoothly. “We didn’t plan for it to come out like that last night. But yes. We’ve been seeing each other.”

Sophia pressed a hand to her mouth, tears spilling over. “Oh, my loves… I’ve waited years for you two to stop fighting and finally see each other. This is… this is beautiful.”

Elena’s stomach twisted with guilt. The hope in her mother’s voice was almost unbearable. For fourteen years, Sophia had tried everything—family vacations, therapy sessions, even locking them in the library together once during a particularly bad fight. All in the name of healing the wound left by Cassian’s little sister, Amelia.

Richard cleared his throat. “Cassian. A word in my study after breakfast.”

“No need, Father.” Cassian’s thumb stroked the back of Elena’s hand in slow, possessive circles. To the others, it looked tender. To her, it felt like a warning. “We’re handling it. Elena is moving into the east wing suite closer to mine today. We want to do this properly.”

Elena nearly choked on her coffee. She shot him a glare, but he only smiled—that sharp, predatory smile that had always preceded their worst battles.

After breakfast, the storm broke in private.

The moment the parents left the room, Elena yanked her hand away. “Moving in? Are you insane?”

Cassian leaned back, sipping his espresso. “You wanted believability. My father has eyes and ears everywhere. If we’re supposedly together, we can’t live like strangers under the same roof. Pack your things. Or I’ll do it for you—and I might accidentally leave behind anything embarrassing.”

“You’re enjoying this,” she accused, voice low and furious.

“Immensely.” His gray eyes locked on hers. “You dragged me into your mess, Elena. Now you’ll live in it. Every day. Every night.”

The word *night* sent heat crawling up her neck. She remembered the few times she had glimpsed him shirtless after workouts or late swims—broad shoulders, defined muscle earned from ruthless discipline, not just inheritance. She hated how her body noticed.

By midday, her belongings were transferred to the luxurious suite connected to his by a shared sitting room. The movers worked under Cassian’s watchful eye. When they finally left, he closed the door and turned to her.

“Ground rules,” he said, stalking closer. “One: No contradicting me in public. Two: When we’re alone, drop the act—but keep your distance. Three: If anyone asks for details about our relationship, you defer to me.”

Elena crossed her arms. “And what if I have conditions too?”

He raised an eyebrow, amused. “You’re not exactly in a position to negotiate, little liar.”

“Try me.” She stepped forward, refusing to yield ground. “I want you to stop calling me ‘stepsister’ like it’s an insult. And I want one honest conversation about why you’ve hated me for fourteen years. No sarcasm. No walls.”

Something flickered in his expression—pain, quickly buried. He turned away, walking to the tall windows overlooking the estate gardens where they had once had a screaming match so loud the staff had called security.

“You want honesty?” His voice was quieter now. “Fine. You were the replacement. Mother brought you home three months after Amelia died. Same age. Same dark hair. I walked into the foyer and there you were, holding her hand, wearing one of Amelia’s old dresses because yours were too shabby from the orphanage. It felt like they were trying to erase her. Erase *me*.”

Elena’s throat tightened. She had never heard him speak Amelia’s name aloud before.

“I wasn’t trying to replace anyone,” she whispered. “I was eight and terrified. I thought… maybe I’d finally have a brother. Someone to protect me.”

Cassian laughed bitterly. “Protect you? I wanted you gone. Every time you smiled at dinner, every time you called my mother ‘Mom,’ it was like a knife. So I made sure you knew you didn’t belong.”

The confession hung between them, raw and heavy. For the first time, Elena saw the broken boy beneath the arrogant man. The grief he had carried alone for so long.

She reached out instinctively, touching his arm. “I’m sorry, Cassian. I never wanted to hurt you.”

He looked down at her hand, then slowly covered it with his own. The air thickened. His gaze dropped to her lips, stormy and conflicted. For one suspended heartbeat, she thought he might kiss her—just to punish her, or maybe because the tension had finally cracked something open.

Instead, he pulled back. “Don’t,” he said roughly. “Don’t pretend you care now. This is temporary. Two weeks, then we stage the breakup and go back to hating each other properly.”

Elena dropped her hand, stung. “Right. Temporary.”

The rest of the day passed in a blur of forced proximity. They attended a charity luncheon together in the afternoon—Cassian’s arm around her waist, his fingers occasionally brushing the curve of her hip in ways that made her pulse race despite herself. He played the devoted boyfriend flawlessly: fetching her drinks, whispering in her ear (mostly threats), laughing at her jokes for the audience.

But every touch felt like fire and ice at once.

That evening, back at the mansion, they had their first real test.

Sophia insisted on a family dinner to “celebrate.” Candles glowed on the table. Richard raised a toast to new beginnings. Halfway through the main course, Jake—uninvited but apparently tipped off by someone at the party—sent Elena a string of venomous texts.

**Jake:** So the ice queen finally melted for her own stepbrother? Disgusting. Everyone’s talking.

Elena’s face paled. Cassian noticed immediately. Under the table, he took her phone, read the messages, and his jaw tightened.

“Excuse me,” he said calmly, kissing her temple for their parents’ benefit before stepping out.

Ten minutes later he returned, expression serene. “Problem solved. Jake won’t bother you again.”

“What did you do?” she hissed when they were alone later in the sitting room between their suites.

“Reminded him that his family’s latest development project needs Hale approval. And that certain photos from his last Vegas trip could easily find their way to his uncle.” Cassian shrugged. “I protect what’s mine. Even if it’s fake.”

Elena stared at him. The possessiveness in his tone unsettled her—because part of her, a dangerous, reckless part, didn’t entirely hate it.

She turned to leave for her room, but he caught her wrist.

“One more thing,” he murmured, voice low. “Tomorrow night there’s a gala. We’re going together. And Elena?” His eyes darkened with warning and something hotter. “Sell it like your future depends on it. Because right now… it does.”

As she closed the door between them, heart racing, Elena realized the terrifying truth: the line between hatred and something far more dangerous was blurring faster than she could control.

And Cassian Hale had no intention of letting her forget who started this war.

The new evidence from the warehouse files had changed everything and nothing at the same time. Elena and Cassian spent the entire next day locked in the study, going through every page, every transaction, every damning connection. The proof was overwhelming. Richard hadn’t just covered up Amelia’s death he had built a shadow network of silence, payoffs, and threats that spanned years.By evening, the moral weight of it all had become unbearable.Elena stood by the window, staring out at the darkening gardens. The old oak tree was barely visible in the twilight. “We can’t ignore this,” she said quietly. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. This is years of crimes. People were hurt. Silenced. And I was part of it the replacement they bought to keep their empire intact.”Cassian sat at the desk, the files spread before him like a battlefield. He looked exhausted, the conflict raging visibly across his face. “I know,” he said, voice rough. “But e

The warehouse files arrived the next morning in a sealed envelope delivered by their private detective. Elena and Cassian sat together in the study, the thick folder between them like a live grenade. The new evidence was devastating not just confirmation of the accident cover-up, but clear links showing Richard had orchestrated larger crimes: money laundering through shell companies, silencing witnesses, and even connections to the Langfords’ recent attacks.Elena’s hands trembled as she flipped through the pages. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. He’s been running this family like a criminal empire for years. The payments to my mother, the contingency plans for me… it was all part of something much bigger.”Cassian stared at the documents, his face pale. The evidence linked his father directly to crimes that could send him to prison for decades. The moral dilemma they had argued about the night before now had concrete proof backing it.“We

The moral dilemma had been simmering beneath the surface for weeks, but it finally broke into the open two days after the gala. Elena and Cassian sat in the study with the full detective report spread across the table between them. The documents were damning clear evidence of Richard’s direct involvement in the accident cover-up, the payments to Mara, and the contingency plans to silence Elena if she ever became a threat.Elena stared at the papers, her hands trembling slightly. “We have to expose him,” she said quietly, voice steady despite the storm inside her. “The truth has to come out. The board, the public, the courts they all need to know what he did. What they both did to me, to Lucas, to your sister.”Cassian leaned back in his chair, dragging a hand through his hair. His expression was conflicted, the same internal war she had seen since the beginning. “If we do this, it’s over. The company. The family name. Everything my father built. He coul

The gala had left a bitter taste that lingered for days. Elena spent most of her time in the small sitting room off the main library, a space she had claimed as her own since moving into the estate. The guilt that had been building since the party lie now felt like a living thing inside her chest, heavy and unrelenting. She sat at the antique desk with a blank sheet of paper in front of her. The pen felt heavy in her hand. For the past hour, she had been drafting and redrafting the same letter.Cassian,I can’t keep doing this. The lie I told at the party has spiraled into something that is destroying both of us. You defend me in boardrooms and kiss me like I matter, but you still see me as temporary. As the replacement who ruined your family. I won’t be the reason you lose everything. I’m ending the engagement. I’ll take the blame. Tell the board whatever you need to. I’m sorry for everything. She stared at the words, tears blurring the ink. She didn’t send it. She didn’t even finish

The gala was supposed to be a strategic move — a public show of strength after the board meeting and the Langfords’ escalating threats. Elena had agreed to attend only because Cassian insisted they needed to appear united. Now, as they walked into the glittering ballroom, she regretted it.Cassian’s hand rested possessively on her lower back, guiding her through the crowd. He looked impeccable in his tailored black tuxedo, but the tension in his shoulders told her he was on edge. Their tense alliance from the investigation the day before had brought a fragile peace, but the overheard conversation and her guilt still hung between them like a shadow. They had barely spoken on the drive over. Elena felt the distance she had created, and part of her wondered if it was the right choice. But every time she looked at him, she remembered his words to Marcus “temporary,” “damage control.” The guilt wouldn’t let her forget. They were only twenty minutes into the event when the past arrived in

The investigation into the Langfords began the next morning, born from necessity rather than choice. Elena had returned to the estate after Lucas’s honest talk, but the emotional distance between her and Cassian remained like a visible wall. She still felt the sting of his words to Marcus, and he was still frustrated by her sudden withdrawal. They met in the study after breakfast. Cassian had already pulled files, security reports, and the latest detective updates. He stood at the head of the table, sleeves rolled up, looking every bit the strategic heir. Elena sat across from him, arms crossed, trying to keep her voice steady.“If we’re doing this,” she said, “we do it together. No more protecting me from the truth. I want to know everything.”Cassian studied her for a long moment, his gray eyes conflicted. “Fine. But we stay close. No more disappearing to hotels because you overheard one conversation.”The tension was immediate. Elena felt the familiar guilt rise, but she pushed it

Elena’s fingers tightened around the stone railing until her knuckles bleached white. The night air, once a welcome relief, now felt thick and suffocating. The argument exploded late that night. Elena had tried to keep quiet after reading the latest anonymous threat, but the guilt had become too loud. She couldn’t sleep.
