Chapter 4

The gown clung to Elena like a second skin emerald silk that pooled at her feet and shimmered under the dressing room lights. She stared at her reflection, fingers trembling as she fastened diamond earrings that belonged to Sophia. Tonight wasn’t just a gala. It was their first major public performance as a couple, and the entire city’s elite would be watching.

A sharp knock sounded. Without waiting, Cassian stepped inside.

He froze mid-stride. His tailored black tuxedo fit like it had been poured over his frame, the crisp white shirt contrasting against his sharp features. For once, the arrogant mask slipped. His gray eyes traced her slowly shoulders, waist, the dangerous dip of the neckline before locking on her face.

“You’ll do,” he said, voice rougher than usual.

Elena arched an eyebrow, masking the flutter in her chest. “High praise from the man who once called me a ‘charity case in designer clothes.’”

He crossed the room in three strides, stopping close enough that she caught the scent of his cologne. “That was before you made us the scandal of the year.” His fingers brushed her collarbone as he adjusted the delicate strap of her gown. The touch lingered a second too long. “Remember the rules. Smile. Lean into me. Let them believe it.”

“Or what?” she challenged, tilting her head. “You’ll extend my sentence?”

His lips curved into that dangerous half-smile. “Two weeks is generous. Keep pushing and I might make it a month.”

The ride to the Grand Ballroom was silent except for the low hum of the town car’s engine. Cassian scrolled through his phone, jaw tight. Elena watched the city lights blur past, nerves twisting tighter with every block. When they arrived, cameras flashed like lightning. Cassian stepped out first, then offered his hand. She took it, and the moment their fingers intertwined, the performance began.

“Mr. Hale! Is it true about you and your stepsister?” a reporter shouted.

Cassian pulled her flush against his side, one arm possessively around her waist. “Elena isn’t my stepsister tonight,” he said smoothly, voice carrying just far enough. “She’s the woman I’m with. Any further questions are private.”

The flashbulbs exploded. Elena forced a shy, radiant smile and rested her head briefly on his shoulder. His body was warm, solid, and far too real.

Inside the opulent ballroom, chandeliers dripped crystal and the orchestra played a waltz that felt like a dare. Heads turned. Whispers rippled. Old acquaintances who had watched them trade barbs for years now stared with open curiosity.

Sophia and Richard were already there, beaming. Sophia hugged them both tightly. “You two look perfect together. I always knew there was something beneath the fighting.”

Elena’s guilt sharpened. Cassian’s hand tightened on her waist in silent warning.

They circulated. Cassian played the part flawlessly introducing her with a new warmth, brushing a kiss to her temple when an older investor asked how long they’d been hiding their relationship. Each touch sent sparks racing across her skin. She hated how natural it felt. How her body leaned into him without permission.

Halfway through the evening, trouble arrived.

Jake sauntered over, champagne in hand, his new girlfriend trailing behind like a trophy. His eyes raked over Elena’s dress with blatant disdain. “Well, if it isn’t the happy couple. Quite the upgrade from ‘frigid orphan,’ Ellie. Or should I say… sister-fucker?”

The crude words landed like a slap. Elena stiffened.

Cassian’s expression didn’t change, but the air around him grew colder. He stepped slightly in front of her. “Careful, Jake. Your family’s waterfront project is one signature away from being denied. I’d hate for your father to lose millions because you can’t control your mouth.”

Jake’s face reddened. “You think you own this city?”

“No,” Cassian replied calmly. “I just know who does.” He turned to Elena, his gaze softening into something that looked dangerously like affection. “Dance with me, love?”

Before she could answer, he swept her onto the dance floor. The orchestra shifted into a slower piece. His hand settled at the small of her back, the other clasping hers. They moved together with surprising ease, years of forced proximity translating into unexpected grace.

“You didn’t have to threaten him,” Elena murmured, hyper-aware of every point of contact.

“Yes, I did.” His breath brushed her ear. “No one talks to you like that. Not while you’re mine.”

“Fake mine,” she corrected, but her voice wavered.

Cassian pulled back just enough to meet her eyes. The stormy gray had darkened. “Does this feel fake to you?” His thumb traced a slow circle on her lower back, sending heat pooling low in her belly.

Elena’s pulse thundered. The room faded—the stares, the music, the lies. For a heartbeat, it was just them. Enemy. Pretend lover. The boy who had broken her heart at eight and the man now threatening to steal it at twenty-two.

She looked away first. “Don’t confuse the performance with reality, Cassian.”

His grip tightened almost possessively. “Too late for that.”

The dance ended, but the tension didn’t. They stepped off the floor into a quieter alcove lined with heavy velvet curtains. Elena needed air. Cassian followed.

“You’re shaking,” he observed, voice low.

“I’m fine.”

“Liar.” He cupped her chin, forcing her to look at him. “Same as last night on the terrace. You always bite off more than you can chew, then act surprised when it chokes you.”

Anger flared, hot and familiar. “And you always have to be in control. Tell me, Cassian does it scare you that for once, you’re not? That I forced your perfect, calculated life off course?”

Something raw flashed across his face. He backed her against the wall, one hand braced beside her head. “You have no idea what scares me.”

Their faces were inches apart. His gaze dropped to her mouth. Elena’s breath hitched. The air crackled with fourteen years of hatred, resentment, and something far more terrifying want.

“Tell me to stop,” he whispered, voice rough. “Tell me this is still just the act.”

She should have. Instead, her fingers curled into his lapel, pulling him closer.

Their lips met in a collision fierce, angry, desperate. Not gentle. Not sweet. It was years of slammed doors and sharp words exploding into heat. Cassian’s hand slid into her hair, tilting her head as he deepened the kiss. Elena gasped against his mouth, and he took full advantage, pressing her harder against the velvet.

For one blazing moment, there were no lies. No audience. Just the devastating truth that the line had never been clear.

Then voices approached laughter, footsteps.

Cassian broke away, breathing hard. His eyes were wild, pupils blown. He stared at her like she had rewritten every rule he lived by.

“Fuck,” he muttered, dragging a hand through his hair.

Elena touched her swollen lips, heart hammering. “That… that wasn’t part of the plan.”

“No.” His voice was hoarse. “It wasn’t.”

Before either could say more, Richard appeared at the entrance to the alcove, expression grave. “Cassian. Elena. We need to speak. Now.”

They followed him to a private lounge. Sophia was already there, clutching a handkerchief. On the table lay a printed tabloid article, fresh from the evening’s gossip sites. The headline screamed: *Hale Heir’s Shocking Incestuous Affair with Adopted Sister Family Tragedy or Forbidden Romance?*

But it wasn’t just the headline. There was a photo grainy but clear taken years ago. A teenage Cassian and Elena in a heated argument by the estate pool, his hand gripping her arm. The angle made it look far more intimate than it had been.

Richard’s voice was steel. “Explain. Because this is no longer a private matter. The board is calling an emergency meeting. And Amelia’s grandparents have been in touch. They’re threatening to reopen questions about the adoption.”

Sophia looked devastated. “We only wanted a family…”

Elena’s blood ran cold. This wasn’t just gossip anymore. It was threatening the very foundation of their blended lives.

Cassian’s hand found hers again—this time not for show. His grip was iron. Protective.

But when he looked at her, Elena saw the same terrifying realization in his eyes.

The fake relationship had just become dangerously, uncontrollably real.

And the two weeks they had agreed upon might no longer be enough to contain the fire they had started.

The new evidence from the warehouse files had changed everything and nothing at the same time. Elena and Cassian spent the entire next day locked in the study, going through every page, every transaction, every damning connection. The proof was overwhelming. Richard hadn’t just covered up Amelia’s death he had built a shadow network of silence, payoffs, and threats that spanned years.By evening, the moral weight of it all had become unbearable.Elena stood by the window, staring out at the darkening gardens. The old oak tree was barely visible in the twilight. “We can’t ignore this,” she said quietly. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. This is years of crimes. People were hurt. Silenced. And I was part of it the replacement they bought to keep their empire intact.”Cassian sat at the desk, the files spread before him like a battlefield. He looked exhausted, the conflict raging visibly across his face. “I know,” he said, voice rough. “But e

The warehouse files arrived the next morning in a sealed envelope delivered by their private detective. Elena and Cassian sat together in the study, the thick folder between them like a live grenade. The new evidence was devastating not just confirmation of the accident cover-up, but clear links showing Richard had orchestrated larger crimes: money laundering through shell companies, silencing witnesses, and even connections to the Langfords’ recent attacks.Elena’s hands trembled as she flipped through the pages. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. He’s been running this family like a criminal empire for years. The payments to my mother, the contingency plans for me… it was all part of something much bigger.”Cassian stared at the documents, his face pale. The evidence linked his father directly to crimes that could send him to prison for decades. The moral dilemma they had argued about the night before now had concrete proof backing it.“We

The moral dilemma had been simmering beneath the surface for weeks, but it finally broke into the open two days after the gala. Elena and Cassian sat in the study with the full detective report spread across the table between them. The documents were damning clear evidence of Richard’s direct involvement in the accident cover-up, the payments to Mara, and the contingency plans to silence Elena if she ever became a threat.Elena stared at the papers, her hands trembling slightly. “We have to expose him,” she said quietly, voice steady despite the storm inside her. “The truth has to come out. The board, the public, the courts they all need to know what he did. What they both did to me, to Lucas, to your sister.”Cassian leaned back in his chair, dragging a hand through his hair. His expression was conflicted, the same internal war she had seen since the beginning. “If we do this, it’s over. The company. The family name. Everything my father built. He coul

The gala had left a bitter taste that lingered for days. Elena spent most of her time in the small sitting room off the main library, a space she had claimed as her own since moving into the estate. The guilt that had been building since the party lie now felt like a living thing inside her chest, heavy and unrelenting. She sat at the antique desk with a blank sheet of paper in front of her. The pen felt heavy in her hand. For the past hour, she had been drafting and redrafting the same letter.Cassian,I can’t keep doing this. The lie I told at the party has spiraled into something that is destroying both of us. You defend me in boardrooms and kiss me like I matter, but you still see me as temporary. As the replacement who ruined your family. I won’t be the reason you lose everything. I’m ending the engagement. I’ll take the blame. Tell the board whatever you need to. I’m sorry for everything. She stared at the words, tears blurring the ink. She didn’t send it. She didn’t even finish

The gala was supposed to be a strategic move — a public show of strength after the board meeting and the Langfords’ escalating threats. Elena had agreed to attend only because Cassian insisted they needed to appear united. Now, as they walked into the glittering ballroom, she regretted it.Cassian’s hand rested possessively on her lower back, guiding her through the crowd. He looked impeccable in his tailored black tuxedo, but the tension in his shoulders told her he was on edge. Their tense alliance from the investigation the day before had brought a fragile peace, but the overheard conversation and her guilt still hung between them like a shadow. They had barely spoken on the drive over. Elena felt the distance she had created, and part of her wondered if it was the right choice. But every time she looked at him, she remembered his words to Marcus “temporary,” “damage control.” The guilt wouldn’t let her forget. They were only twenty minutes into the event when the past arrived in

The investigation into the Langfords began the next morning, born from necessity rather than choice. Elena had returned to the estate after Lucas’s honest talk, but the emotional distance between her and Cassian remained like a visible wall. She still felt the sting of his words to Marcus, and he was still frustrated by her sudden withdrawal. They met in the study after breakfast. Cassian had already pulled files, security reports, and the latest detective updates. He stood at the head of the table, sleeves rolled up, looking every bit the strategic heir. Elena sat across from him, arms crossed, trying to keep her voice steady.“If we’re doing this,” she said, “we do it together. No more protecting me from the truth. I want to know everything.”Cassian studied her for a long moment, his gray eyes conflicted. “Fine. But we stay close. No more disappearing to hotels because you overheard one conversation.”The tension was immediate. Elena felt the familiar guilt rise, but she pushed it

The argument exploded late that night. Elena had tried to keep quiet after reading the latest anonymous threat, but the guilt had become too loud. She couldn’t sleep. The morning light stabbed through the heavy curtains of the guest room like an accusation. Elena lay staring at the ceiling, her silk nightdress twisted around her legs from a sleepless night. Elena’s fingers tightened around the stone railing until her knuckles bleached white. The night air, once a welcome relief, now felt thick and suffocating.
