Chapter 5

The private lounge felt smaller than it was, the heavy velvet drapes and antique furniture closing in like witnesses to a trial. Elena’s hand remained trapped in Cassian’s grip warm, steady, and the only thing anchoring her as Richard Hale’s words echoed.

“Amelia’s grandparents,” Richard repeated, voice low and controlled, the same tone he used when closing unfavorable deals. “They want answers. They never fully approved the adoption, and this scandal gives them ammunition. If they push for a review…”

Sophia dabbed her eyes. “We did everything right. Elena was part of our family the moment I brought her home.”

Elena’s chest ached. She had always known she was the bridge between grief and hope, but never the potential wrecking ball. “This is my fault,” she said quietly. “I started the lie. I’ll end it. Tomorrow I can issue a statement saying I made it up to”

“No.” Cassian’s voice cut through like a blade. His fingers tightened around hers, almost painfully. “We don’t run. We control the narrative.”

Richard studied them both, eyes narrowing. The resemblance between father and son was striking in moments like this unyielding will carved into sharp features. “Control it how? The board is already restless. Hale Enterprises doesn’t need this kind of distraction. Stock will dip on opening bell if we don’t manage perceptions.”

Cassian released Elena’s hand only to slide his arm around her waist, pulling her closer in a gesture that felt both protective and possessive. “Then we give them a better story. A whirlwind romance born from years of tension. Two people who fought their feelings until they couldn’t anymore. It’s messy, but it’s human. And it sells.”

Sophia’s expression softened with fragile hope. “You mean… you’re serious about each other?”

Elena felt Cassian’s body tense against hers. The first kiss still burned on her lips the angry heat, the desperate need. She didn’t know what they were anymore.

“We’re figuring it out,” Cassian answered smoothly. “But right now, we present a united front.”

Richard nodded once, decisive. “Damage control meeting at nine tomorrow. Bring a plan.” He paused at the door, looking back. “And Cassian… whatever this is, don’t let it destroy what’s left of this family.”

The door clicked shut, leaving them alone with the weight of everything unsaid.

Elena stepped away from him, the emerald gown suddenly feeling too tight, too exposing. “United front? Cassian, your mother Sophia looked at me like I was the answer to her prayers. And Amelia’s grandparents… God, what if they try to undo the adoption? I could lose everything.”

“You won’t.” He dragged a hand through his hair, mussing the perfect style from the gala. The movement revealed the faint scar above his eyebrow, the one from one of their worst fights years ago. “I won’t let that happen.”

“Why?” She whirled on him, frustration and fear boiling over. “Because you suddenly care? Or because this is another way for you to control me? Your punishment, remember?”

Cassian crossed the room in two strides, backing her against the ornate sideboard. “Because despite fourteen years of telling myself you were the enemy, I kissed you back there like a man drowning.” His voice dropped, rough with raw honesty. “And I don’t know how to stop.”

The confession stole her breath. Up close, his eyes weren’t just stormy they were turbulent, years of grief and resentment crashing against something new and terrifying.

“You hate me,” she whispered.

“I did.” He braced his hands on either side of her, caging her without touching. “Every time you sat at our table. Every time Mother smiled at you the way she used to smile at Amelia. I hated you for being alive when she wasn’t. For fitting in when I couldn’t.”

Tears stung Elena’s eyes. “I never wanted her place. I just wanted… a family. Someone who saw me.”

“I see you now.” His forehead dropped to rest against hers. The contact was unexpectedly gentle. “Too damn clearly. The way you lift your chin when you’re scared. The way you fight back instead of folding. The way you looked in that dress tonight and made every man in the room want what’s supposed to be mine.”

“Fake mine,” she reminded him, but the words lacked conviction.

His laugh was dark, self-mocking. “Nothing about that kiss was fake, Elena.”

Before she could respond, his mouth claimed hers again. This time slower, deeper less punishment, more exploration. She melted into it despite herself, hands sliding up his chest to clutch his shirt. Heat flared between them, fourteen years of barbed wire turning into live wires. His hands roamed her waist, pulling her flush against him, the hard lines of his body pressing promises she wasn’t ready to name.

They broke apart, breathing raggedly.

“This is dangerous,” she said, voice unsteady.

“Everything about us has always been dangerous.” Cassian stepped back, giving her space she both craved and resented. “Get changed. We’re leaving the gala early. The longer we stay, the more photos they’ll take.”

The town car ride home was thick with tension. Elena changed into a simple coat over her gown in the lounge, but the silk still whispered against her skin like a secret. Cassian loosened his bow tie, the casual dishevelment making him look younger, more human.

Back at the estate, the house felt different charged, watchful. They retreated to the shared sitting room between their suites. Cassian poured two glasses of whiskey and handed her one.

“Tomorrow will be brutal,” he said, sitting across from her. “Media, board calls, possibly a statement. We need to decide how real we make this.”

Elena sipped the burning liquid, gathering courage. “Then tell me about Amelia. Really. Not the angry version you threw at me as a child. The real one.”

Cassian stared into his glass for a long moment. “She was six when the accident happened. Car crash drunk driver. I was ten. I was supposed to be with them that day, but I had a fever. Mother blamed herself. Father buried himself in work. And I… I survived by being angry. When you arrived, it felt like they were replacing the hole in our lives with a new puzzle piece. You smiled like her. You even had the same gap between your front teeth at first.”

Elena touched her perfectly straight teeth, corrected years ago with braces paid for by the Hales.

“I made your life hell because it was easier than feeling the guilt,” he admitted. “Easier than admitting the replacement was becoming real to me.”

The vulnerability cracked something open in her chest. She set her glass down and moved to sit beside him on the couch. “I used to dream about having a big brother. Someone who’d scare away the monsters. Instead I got you my own personal monster.”

His lips twitched. “And now?”

“Now I don’t know.” She traced a finger along the edge of his jaw, bold in the quiet night. “But I’m tired of fighting you, Cassian.”

He caught her hand, pressing a kiss to her palm that sent shivers racing down her spine. “Then don’t. For the next week at least, stop fighting. Let’s see what happens when we don’t.”

The suggestion hung between them, heavy with possibility. They talked for hours about the board strategy, about public appearances, about boundaries that already felt paper-thin. By the time they stood, the sky outside was lightening toward dawn.

At her bedroom door, Cassian hesitated. “One more thing. Amelia’s grandparents want a meeting in three days. They’re flying in. If they sense this is fake…”

“We make sure they don’t,” Elena finished. She rose on her toes and kissed him softly this time her choice, not collision. “Goodnight, Cassian.”

“Sleep well, Elena.”

But sleep didn’t come easily. As she lay in bed, the tabloid article haunted her. The old photo. The threats to the adoption. The kiss that had tasted like truth.

Meanwhile, in the next room, Cassian stood by the window, phone in hand. A new message lit the screen from an unknown number.

*Unknown: Call off the charade or we dig deeper. Amelia’s file has more secrets than you know. A concerned grandparent.

His grip tightened until the phone creaked. The real war wasn’t with Elena anymore. It was with the past refusing to stay buried.

And whoever was behind this new threat had just made the biggest mistake of their lives.

Because Cassian Hale protected what was his—fake, real, or somewhere dangerously in between.

The new evidence from the warehouse files had changed everything and nothing at the same time. Elena and Cassian spent the entire next day locked in the study, going through every page, every transaction, every damning connection. The proof was overwhelming. Richard hadn’t just covered up Amelia’s death he had built a shadow network of silence, payoffs, and threats that spanned years.By evening, the moral weight of it all had become unbearable.Elena stood by the window, staring out at the darkening gardens. The old oak tree was barely visible in the twilight. “We can’t ignore this,” she said quietly. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. This is years of crimes. People were hurt. Silenced. And I was part of it the replacement they bought to keep their empire intact.”Cassian sat at the desk, the files spread before him like a battlefield. He looked exhausted, the conflict raging visibly across his face. “I know,” he said, voice rough. “But e

The warehouse files arrived the next morning in a sealed envelope delivered by their private detective. Elena and Cassian sat together in the study, the thick folder between them like a live grenade. The new evidence was devastating not just confirmation of the accident cover-up, but clear links showing Richard had orchestrated larger crimes: money laundering through shell companies, silencing witnesses, and even connections to the Langfords’ recent attacks.Elena’s hands trembled as she flipped through the pages. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. He’s been running this family like a criminal empire for years. The payments to my mother, the contingency plans for me… it was all part of something much bigger.”Cassian stared at the documents, his face pale. The evidence linked his father directly to crimes that could send him to prison for decades. The moral dilemma they had argued about the night before now had concrete proof backing it.“We

The moral dilemma had been simmering beneath the surface for weeks, but it finally broke into the open two days after the gala. Elena and Cassian sat in the study with the full detective report spread across the table between them. The documents were damning clear evidence of Richard’s direct involvement in the accident cover-up, the payments to Mara, and the contingency plans to silence Elena if she ever became a threat.Elena stared at the papers, her hands trembling slightly. “We have to expose him,” she said quietly, voice steady despite the storm inside her. “The truth has to come out. The board, the public, the courts they all need to know what he did. What they both did to me, to Lucas, to your sister.”Cassian leaned back in his chair, dragging a hand through his hair. His expression was conflicted, the same internal war she had seen since the beginning. “If we do this, it’s over. The company. The family name. Everything my father built. He coul

The gala had left a bitter taste that lingered for days. Elena spent most of her time in the small sitting room off the main library, a space she had claimed as her own since moving into the estate. The guilt that had been building since the party lie now felt like a living thing inside her chest, heavy and unrelenting. She sat at the antique desk with a blank sheet of paper in front of her. The pen felt heavy in her hand. For the past hour, she had been drafting and redrafting the same letter.Cassian,I can’t keep doing this. The lie I told at the party has spiraled into something that is destroying both of us. You defend me in boardrooms and kiss me like I matter, but you still see me as temporary. As the replacement who ruined your family. I won’t be the reason you lose everything. I’m ending the engagement. I’ll take the blame. Tell the board whatever you need to. I’m sorry for everything. She stared at the words, tears blurring the ink. She didn’t send it. She didn’t even finish

The gala was supposed to be a strategic move — a public show of strength after the board meeting and the Langfords’ escalating threats. Elena had agreed to attend only because Cassian insisted they needed to appear united. Now, as they walked into the glittering ballroom, she regretted it.Cassian’s hand rested possessively on her lower back, guiding her through the crowd. He looked impeccable in his tailored black tuxedo, but the tension in his shoulders told her he was on edge. Their tense alliance from the investigation the day before had brought a fragile peace, but the overheard conversation and her guilt still hung between them like a shadow. They had barely spoken on the drive over. Elena felt the distance she had created, and part of her wondered if it was the right choice. But every time she looked at him, she remembered his words to Marcus “temporary,” “damage control.” The guilt wouldn’t let her forget. They were only twenty minutes into the event when the past arrived in

The investigation into the Langfords began the next morning, born from necessity rather than choice. Elena had returned to the estate after Lucas’s honest talk, but the emotional distance between her and Cassian remained like a visible wall. She still felt the sting of his words to Marcus, and he was still frustrated by her sudden withdrawal. They met in the study after breakfast. Cassian had already pulled files, security reports, and the latest detective updates. He stood at the head of the table, sleeves rolled up, looking every bit the strategic heir. Elena sat across from him, arms crossed, trying to keep her voice steady.“If we’re doing this,” she said, “we do it together. No more protecting me from the truth. I want to know everything.”Cassian studied her for a long moment, his gray eyes conflicted. “Fine. But we stay close. No more disappearing to hotels because you overheard one conversation.”The tension was immediate. Elena felt the familiar guilt rise, but she pushed it

The morning of discharge arrived with pale sunlight filtering through the hospital blinds. Elena stood slowly, testing her balance as the nurse removed the final IV line. The graze on her side pulled with every movement, a sharp reminder of how close death had come in that warehouse. Sh

The Hale estate had never felt smaller. Cassian paced the length of his study like a predator denied its prey, the photograph of Lucas burning a hole on the desk between them. The Hale Enterprises boardroom smelled of polished mahogany, strong coffee, and barely concealed panic. The first public appearance after the hospital discharge came sooner than either of them wanted. The board had demanded a statement a show of unity to quiet the growing rumors that the Hale heir was spiraling after the warehouse incident. Cassian had tried to push it back, but Elena ins
