Chapter 6

The Hale Enterprises boardroom smelled of polished mahogany, strong coffee, and barely concealed panic. Sunlight sliced through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the long table where nine stern faces watched Cassian and Elena enter. Richard sat at the head, expression carved from granite. Sophia had chosen to wait outside—this battle was corporate, not maternal.

Elena’s hand rested in the crook of Cassian’s arm, her simple cream sheath dress and pearl earrings chosen for “wholesome credibility.” Cassian looked every inch the future CEO in his navy suit, but she felt the tension radiating through his sleeve.

“Thank you for coming on short notice,” Cassian began, voice steady and commanding. “As you’ve seen, the media has twisted a private matter into a spectacle. Elena and I are together. The relationship developed gradually over years of living under the same roof. The timing of the revelation was… unfortunate.”

A silver-haired board member leaned forward. “Unfortunate? The stock dropped four percent in pre-market. Investors are questioning leadership stability. Incest rumors don’t exactly inspire confidence.”

“It’s not incest,” Elena said firmly, surprising herself with the strength in her voice. “We are not blood-related. I was adopted. And our feelings are real.”

Cassian’s fingers brushed hers in silent approval. The lie no longer entirely a lie felt heavier with every repetition.

They presented the strategy: controlled interviews, a joint charity appearance, transparent but tasteful statements. By the end of the hour, the board grudgingly agreed to hold off on any drastic decisions, but the warning was clear one more scandal and heads would roll.

As they left the building, Cassian pulled her into the private elevator. The moment the doors closed, he backed her against the mirrored wall and kissed her hard. Not for show. Not for cameras. Just raw need.

“You were incredible in there,” he murmured against her lips. “Defending us like that.”

“Us,” she echoed, tasting the word. Her hands framed his face. “When did it stop being a punishment?”

Cassian rested his forehead against hers as the elevator descended. “Somewhere between the gala and last night. I’m still furious you started this. But I’m more terrified of what happens when it ends.”

The doors opened to the underground garage. Reality waited.

Back at the estate, Sophia had prepared lunch on the terrace. She hugged Elena tightly, whispering, “Whatever comes, you are my daughter. Never doubt that.”

The warmth cracked Elena’s defenses. For the first time in years, the house felt less like a battlefield and more like home. Cassian watched them with an unreadable expression, something soft and pained in his gray eyes.

Their afternoon was stolen. They worked side by side in his study him on business calls, her reviewing designs for her portfolio. Every shared glance, every accidental brush of hands, built a quiet intimacy that felt more dangerous than their fights ever had.

At four o’clock, the storm arrived.

Amelia’s grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Langford landed early. Richard insisted on receiving them immediately in the formal drawing room. Elena changed into a modest navy dress. Cassian stayed in his suit, armor intact.

The Langfords were in their late seventies, elegant but brittle with old grief. Mrs. Langford’s eyes fixed on Elena the moment she entered, narrowing with recognition and disapproval.

“So this is the girl,” she said coldly. “The one who replaced our granddaughter in every way.”

“Grandmother,” Cassian said, voice respectful but edged. “Elena didn’t replace Amelia. No one could.”

Mr. Langford placed a thick folder on the coffee table. “We’ve stayed silent for years out of respect for Richard and Sophia. But this” he tapped the tabloid photo “crosses every line. We have concerns about the stability of the adoption. Questions about whether Elena was truly integrated or simply… convenient.”

Elena felt the floor tilt. “I loved this family. I still do.”

Sophia’s voice trembled. “Eleanor and I built something real. Please don’t do this.”

The meeting dragged on painfully. The Langfords wanted reassurances, visitation rights to “monitor” the family situation, and full disclosure of Amelia’s medical and personal files some of which Richard had kept private even from Cassian.

When Cassian finally escorted the couple to their guest suite in the west wing, Elena escaped to the gardens. The same gardens where she and Cassian had once hurled insults at each other as teenagers.

She found him there twenty minutes later, leaning against the stone fountain, jacket discarded, sleeves rolled up.

“They want blood,” he said without turning. “Not literally. But they want proof that this family is still broken. That you’re still the outsider.”

Elena stepped closer. “And what do you want, Cassian?”

He turned. The sunset painted his face in gold and shadow, making him heartbreakingly handsome. “I want the lie to stop hurting people. And I want you.” The admission came out raw. “Not pretend. Not temporary. You.”

Her heart slammed against her ribs. “Even though I forced your hand? Even though I’m the replacement you hated for fourteen years?”

Cassian closed the distance, cupping her face with both hands. “Because of that. Because you stayed. You fought me. You made me feel something other than grief for the first time since I was ten.” His thumb traced her lower lip. “I’m falling for you, Elena Voss. And it terrifies me more than any boardroom or grandparent.”

She kissed him then slow, deep, and full of every unsaid word between them. His arms wrapped around her, lifting her slightly as the kiss grew heated. Years of suppressed tension poured out in every touch. His hands roamed her back, hers tangled in his hair. The fountain’s gentle splash mingled with their ragged breathing.

When they broke apart, Cassian’s eyes were dark with desire. “Come to my room tonight,” he whispered. “No lies. No audience. Just us.”

Elena’s pulse raced. The invitation carried weight—their story had always danced on the edge of this. “I want that,” she admitted. “But we can’t ignore the Langfords. They’re dangerous.”

“I know.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I have people looking into why they’re pushing so hard now. There’s more to this than moral outrage.”

They returned inside hand in hand, the gesture feeling less like performance and more like truth.

Dinner was a strained affair. The Langfords probed with polite venom. Cassian deflected expertly while Elena held Sophia’s hand under the table. By dessert, exhaustion weighed on everyone.

Later that night, Elena stood in front of the mirror in her suite, wearing a simple silk slip. Her reflection showed flushed cheeks and bright eyes. She felt alive scared, hopeful, desired.

A soft knock. She opened the door expecting Cassian.

Instead, Mrs. Langford stood there, expression haunted.

“I need to speak with you alone, child. Before it’s too late.”

Elena hesitated, then let her in. The older woman sat on the edge of the chaise, clutching a small photograph.

“Amelia wasn’t the only one in the car that day,” she whispered. “There was another child. A twin. A boy. He survived… barely. Richard and Sophia never told anyone. They buried the records. We believe Cassian doesn’t even know he had a brother who lived.”

Elena’s blood turned to ice. “What?”

“We think your adoption was rushed to cover something. Perhaps guilt. Perhaps something worse.” Mrs. Langford’s eyes filled with tears. “If you truly care for this family, help us uncover the truth. Before Cassian destroys himself defending a lie built on secrets.”

The door to the sitting room creaked. Cassian stood there, having entered from his side, face pale with shock.

“Elena?” His voice was dangerously quiet. “What is she telling you?”

Mrs. Langford rose. “The truth always comes out, Cassian. Ask your father about your brother. Ask him why the second child was hidden.”

She left them in stunned silence.

Cassian stared at Elena, betrayal and confusion warring on his face. “Tell me everything she said. Now.”

Elena’s heart shattered at the look in his eyes. The fragile trust they had built tonight cracked under the weight of new revelations. The past wasn’t just haunting them it was rewriting everything they thought they knew about their family.

And in that moment, she realized the real test of their feelings wasn’t the fake relationship.

It was whether they could survive the truth.

The new evidence from the warehouse files had changed everything and nothing at the same time. Elena and Cassian spent the entire next day locked in the study, going through every page, every transaction, every damning connection. The proof was overwhelming. Richard hadn’t just covered up Amelia’s death he had built a shadow network of silence, payoffs, and threats that spanned years.By evening, the moral weight of it all had become unbearable.Elena stood by the window, staring out at the darkening gardens. The old oak tree was barely visible in the twilight. “We can’t ignore this,” she said quietly. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. This is years of crimes. People were hurt. Silenced. And I was part of it the replacement they bought to keep their empire intact.”Cassian sat at the desk, the files spread before him like a battlefield. He looked exhausted, the conflict raging visibly across his face. “I know,” he said, voice rough. “But e

The warehouse files arrived the next morning in a sealed envelope delivered by their private detective. Elena and Cassian sat together in the study, the thick folder between them like a live grenade. The new evidence was devastating not just confirmation of the accident cover-up, but clear links showing Richard had orchestrated larger crimes: money laundering through shell companies, silencing witnesses, and even connections to the Langfords’ recent attacks.Elena’s hands trembled as she flipped through the pages. “This isn’t just about Amelia anymore. He’s been running this family like a criminal empire for years. The payments to my mother, the contingency plans for me… it was all part of something much bigger.”Cassian stared at the documents, his face pale. The evidence linked his father directly to crimes that could send him to prison for decades. The moral dilemma they had argued about the night before now had concrete proof backing it.“We

The moral dilemma had been simmering beneath the surface for weeks, but it finally broke into the open two days after the gala. Elena and Cassian sat in the study with the full detective report spread across the table between them. The documents were damning clear evidence of Richard’s direct involvement in the accident cover-up, the payments to Mara, and the contingency plans to silence Elena if she ever became a threat.Elena stared at the papers, her hands trembling slightly. “We have to expose him,” she said quietly, voice steady despite the storm inside her. “The truth has to come out. The board, the public, the courts they all need to know what he did. What they both did to me, to Lucas, to your sister.”Cassian leaned back in his chair, dragging a hand through his hair. His expression was conflicted, the same internal war she had seen since the beginning. “If we do this, it’s over. The company. The family name. Everything my father built. He coul

The gala had left a bitter taste that lingered for days. Elena spent most of her time in the small sitting room off the main library, a space she had claimed as her own since moving into the estate. The guilt that had been building since the party lie now felt like a living thing inside her chest, heavy and unrelenting. She sat at the antique desk with a blank sheet of paper in front of her. The pen felt heavy in her hand. For the past hour, she had been drafting and redrafting the same letter.Cassian,I can’t keep doing this. The lie I told at the party has spiraled into something that is destroying both of us. You defend me in boardrooms and kiss me like I matter, but you still see me as temporary. As the replacement who ruined your family. I won’t be the reason you lose everything. I’m ending the engagement. I’ll take the blame. Tell the board whatever you need to. I’m sorry for everything. She stared at the words, tears blurring the ink. She didn’t send it. She didn’t even finish

The gala was supposed to be a strategic move — a public show of strength after the board meeting and the Langfords’ escalating threats. Elena had agreed to attend only because Cassian insisted they needed to appear united. Now, as they walked into the glittering ballroom, she regretted it.Cassian’s hand rested possessively on her lower back, guiding her through the crowd. He looked impeccable in his tailored black tuxedo, but the tension in his shoulders told her he was on edge. Their tense alliance from the investigation the day before had brought a fragile peace, but the overheard conversation and her guilt still hung between them like a shadow. They had barely spoken on the drive over. Elena felt the distance she had created, and part of her wondered if it was the right choice. But every time she looked at him, she remembered his words to Marcus “temporary,” “damage control.” The guilt wouldn’t let her forget. They were only twenty minutes into the event when the past arrived in

The investigation into the Langfords began the next morning, born from necessity rather than choice. Elena had returned to the estate after Lucas’s honest talk, but the emotional distance between her and Cassian remained like a visible wall. She still felt the sting of his words to Marcus, and he was still frustrated by her sudden withdrawal. They met in the study after breakfast. Cassian had already pulled files, security reports, and the latest detective updates. He stood at the head of the table, sleeves rolled up, looking every bit the strategic heir. Elena sat across from him, arms crossed, trying to keep her voice steady.“If we’re doing this,” she said, “we do it together. No more protecting me from the truth. I want to know everything.”Cassian studied her for a long moment, his gray eyes conflicted. “Fine. But we stay close. No more disappearing to hotels because you overheard one conversation.”The tension was immediate. Elena felt the familiar guilt rise, but she pushed it

The Hale estate had never felt smaller. Cassian paced the length of his study like a predator denied its prey, the photograph of Lucas burning a hole on the desk between them.
