Chapter 63

The hallway was dead silent after the door shut. Riley stopped walking, leaning her back against the wall. Her knees felt weak, and her chest was tight.

Ashton stopped next to her. "You okay?"

She took a breath, letting her head rest back against the glass. "I can't believe I just spoke to her like that. All those years I was terrified of that woman, and today she just looked... broken."

"She deserved every word," Ashton said simply. "Come on. Let's get back to Iris."

Next to her stood a little girl, maybe ten, quietly looking at the floor.Riley stared. There was something strangely familiar about the girl's face, a sudden tightness settling in Riley's chest.Erica took a step forward, pulling the girl along. "Riley, wait..."Ashton stepped directly in front of them, his broad frame blocking them off completely."That's enough, Erica," he said, his voice flat and quiet.Erica stopped, pulling the child behind her. "I just want to talk for two minutes, Ashton.""Turn around and leave," Ashton replied simply.Julian stepped up beside him, staying silent but firm. The little girl peeked around Erica's coat, her dark eyes looking straight at Riley with quiet curiosity. Let's get back to Iris."The ride back to the hospital didn't take long. Neither of them said much in the car, but Ashton stayed close. When they got back to the floor, Julian was standing near the desk."How’d it go?" Julian asked."It's done," Riley said. "Is Iris awake?""She woke up a few minutes ago," Julian said. "Aniya's in there with her."Riley pushed the door open and walked in. Iris was sitting up slightly, looking at Aniya’s phone. The moment she saw Riley, her face lit up."Mommy!" Iris said, her voice still a little rasp

Chapter 62The hospital room was finally quiet, but the heavy air felt restless.Riley was sitting beside the bed, watching Iris’s chest rise and fall in a slow, steady rhythm. Her little hand was tucked under her chin, her small face completely peaceful in sleep. Standing near the window, Ashton had his phone pressed to his ear, his voice low as he spoke to his head of security. The door creaked open, and Aniya stepped back inside. Julian was right behind her, both of them carrying two paper cups of hot coffee each. He handed one to Aston, squeezing his shoulder gently, while Aniya offered hers to Riley."Sam just called the precinct," Julian said in his usual quiet, measured tone, glancing over at Ashton. "They’ve got both of them processed."Ashton took the cup with a quick nod. "Good."Before anyone else could speak, the screen of Riley’s phone lit up on the bedside table. It buzzed loudly against the wood, the vibration cutting through the quiet room.Riley reached out and pick

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S BIGGEST REGRET: Losing His Plus-size Ex   THEY NEVER COME NEAR YOU OR IRIS AGAIN

Chapter 61The quiet click of the latch echoed through the room as Ashton stepped back inside. Aniya was sitting in the armchair beside the bed, speaking in a soft whisper as she helped Riley fold a few fresh clothes she'd bought on her way, and pack away the other things. On the bed, Iris was sleeping deeply. Her chest rose and fell in a steady, easy rhythm, and the thin oxygen cannula under her nose gave off a soft, quiet whistle with every breath.Riley looked up the moment Ashton walked in. Seeing him, a tired, genuine smile broke across her pale face. The dark shadows under her eyes were heavy, but the panic that had consumed her for the past twelve hours was gone."Everything okay out there?" she asked softly, standing up from her chair.Ashton pushed down the cold anger still lingering in his chest, forcing his shoulders to relax and his face to stay calm. "Yeah. Just Julian giving me an update on security. The whole floor is locked down." Riley let out a long breath, her h

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S BIGGEST REGRET: Losing His Plus-size Ex   DOESN'T COME ANYWHERE NEAR THIS FLOOR

Chapter 60The word was barely more than a scratchy breath against the inside of the plastic mask, but to Riley, it sounded like thunder. For two agonizing seconds, the room stood entirely still. Riley’s heart slammed against her ribs so hard it felt like a blow. She scrambled closer to the edge of the bed, her hands clutching Iris’s warm fingers like a lifeline."Iris?" Riley choked out, fresh tears instantly blurring her vision. "Baby? Oh my God... Iris!"Iris blinked slowly, her long eyelashes heavy as she adjusted to the soft morning light filtering through the blinds. Her gaze drifted across the white ceiling, looking disoriented and heavy with sleep, before slowly focusing on her mother’s tear-stained face.A tiny, weak crease formed between the little girl’s brows. Beneath the mask, her lips parted again. "Mommy... why are you crying?" Riley let out a wet, breathless laugh, pressing a fierce, desperate kiss against the back of Iris’s small hand. "I’m not sad, baby. I’m just.

Chapter 59Ashton didn't answer right away. He closed the short distance between them, his hands reaching out to grip her shoulders gently. His palms were warm, but his face was drawn pale, his jaw locked in a hard, tight line."Ashton..." Riley’s voice cracked, her fingers digging into his forearms. "Please. What is it?""The flush they administered hours ago should have completely cleared her system by now," Ashton said softly, his voice gravelly with a restraint he was clearly struggling to maintain. "The attending doctor said we have a thirty-minute window left for her reflexes to kick in naturally." Riley felt the floor sway under her feet. "Thirty minutes? What does that mean? What happens after thirty minutes?""If she doesn't start responding or stirring in the next half hour, it means the compound isn't just sitting in her bloodstream...it's affecting her central nervous system," Ashton met her eyes, holding nothing back. "We need to see some movement before that clock ru
