The glass tablet in Rebecca Vance’s hand hit the marble floor and exploded into shards after Christian kicked it straight out of her grip. The fragments shot everywhere. Rebecca stumbled back, her face blotched and furious, grabbed by Victoria before she fell.

“Christian!” she barked, her voice shrill. “Are you out of your mind? The news is everywhere! Your wife’s agency faked the leak that took out your maritime contracts!”

Christian just stared her down, voice deadly even. “The only thing wrong here is your timing, Rebecca.” His hand never eased off my waist. If anything, he hauled me in closer, forcing the board members to edge back just to give us space.

My breath caught in my chest. I glanced at the ruins on the floor—then to the giant monitors all over the atrium. A breaking news banner screamed my agency’s name in blood red letters: Brooks & Associates. This whole thing was a setup. If the review board believed I’d triggered the crisis, they wouldn’t just kill our contract. They’d have me hauled off for fraud and market manipulation.

And if I went to prison, the escrow holding Leo’s surgery money would vanish. He’d die in that hospital bed while I screamed from behind bars.

“Christian, look at the evidence!” Now Victoria’s voice slithered through the room, gloating. She kicked glass aside, fixing me with those icy blue eyes of hers. “The server logs lead straight to her firm. She staged the scandal to blackmail you into this sham marriage. She’s a parasite—”

“The logs are right where I put them, Mother,” Christian answered, smooth as silk.

And just like that, everything in the atrium stilled. I looked up at him, numb all over. The board went silent—frozen, eyes wide, nobody even dared to breathe.

“What are you talking about?” My own voice barely made it out. I couldn’t look away from the hard edge of my fake husband’s jaw.

He didn’t look at me, just locked eyes with his mother. “I ordered the transfer from Brooks & Associates’ systems three days ago. Sierra didn’t leak the files. She acquired them, under a counter-intelligence contract from my own office. She didn’t create the crisis—she traced it.”

He pulled a silver flash drive from his pocket and tossed it to the feet of the lead director.

“Run the keys on that drive,” he said, lowering his voice to a cold threat, “and you’ll find the original leak didn’t come from her firm, but from a private terminal in the Vance Estate. Rebecca’s father sold us out for six months. Competitors in Europe have been feasting off our data.”

Rebecca shrieked, desperation cracking her voice as the board scrambled for the drive. “You’re lying! You’re making this up to save her, Christian!”

Christian just smiled—a sharp, merciless sort of smile. “Federal agents are searching the Vance offices right now. You might want to call your lawyers before your accounts get frozen.”

He didn’t wait for more. With his arm practically welded around my waist, he marched me toward the private elevators. The board members cleared a path like the Red Sea. Victoria stood paralyzed by her pillars, white-knuckled, rage dark under her skin. Her trap had collapsed, and everyone saw it.

The elevator doors slid shut, the noise outside gone—just a gentle whir as we rose.

My body finally snapped free. I tore out of his grip, chest heaving. I wanted to hit him, something to make sense of the wild, crushing relief and fury tangled in my gut.

“You set all this up,” I said, voice shaky. “The leak, the scandal, the logs. You made my agency the scapegoat just to trap me!”

He leaned back against the mirror, totally unbothered, and fixed his sleeves. “I didn’t frame you, Sierra. I used your firm as a shield. If I hadn’t routed everything through your IPs, Mother’s hackers would have caught the real probe in a week. I needed a distraction. You were it.”

I nearly screamed. “I’m a mother, Christian! My son’s waiting on open-heart surgery. If your plan failed, if the board didn’t buy your story, I’d be arrested! Leo would lose everything—his escrow, his life!”

“My gambits don’t fail.” His baritone dropped—final, ironclad.

Two steps and I was cornered, his hands framing my face, forcing me to meet his eyes. He didn’t just look at me—he pinned me there, heat and power rolling off him, the scent of sandalwood and pure will. My heart tried to leap out of my chest.

“Do you really think I’d let anyone cuff you?” His thumb slid over my lip, tracing it like he’d claimed it years ago. “I spent two years acting like a ghost, dismantling these threats so I could bring you—and my son—somewhere safe. Every single move was to protect you.”

Tears burned, blurring everything. “You blackmailed me. You put Leo’s life on the table to force me back into your bed.”

He leaned in so close I could feel the heat in his breath, eyes flicking down—hungry, raw. “You wouldn’t have come for love. You’d starve in the dark before asking a King for help. So I gave you something you’d accept. A price, a contract—a choice.”

“No, Christian, this isn’t a choice. It’s an execution.” I braced both hands on his chest, barely holding it together.

He let out a rough breath, a ghost of a grin, his grip iron-tight in my hair. “Then let’s go down together.”

The elevator dinged. Penthouse floor.

He didn’t let go—not at first. He kept me close, eyes burning with a promise, a curse. The second the assistant’s voice snapped through the intercom, he finally released me. He fixed his suit, shut his real self away, left only the CEO mask for the outside world.

“Fix your lipstick, wife,” he said, cold as ice. “We’ve got an empire to win.”

I stood there a second longer, heart still racing, catching sight of myself in the elevator’s mirrored panel. My hair was wild. Dress rumpled. Diamond ring a lead weight on my hand. Whatever I did from this point was for Leo. I had to step through those doors and play the billionaire’s perfect, loyal wife. Lie until the lie became the truth.

The hearing? Exhausting—three long hours under relentless light, fighting for the company, for Christian, for Leo. I turned it around, framed the King Empire as a rock, the Vances as saboteurs. The board handed Christian the contract and, with it, our survival.

“You did it perfectly,” Christian’s attorney whispered. “He picked the right wife.”

I forced a smile and carried my files out—but my mind was already racing to the hospital. Now funds for Leo’s surgery were safe. I just wanted to get to him, hold him, remind myself who I was doing this for.

I hurried down the corridor toward the elevators, hoping to escape before Christian found me again. But his office door stood ajar, and from inside, Victoria’s venomous voice slithered out.

“You think the Vances are your last problem?” she whispered. “You brought that girl into this family, married her—her blood is in this house.”

Christian’s reply was stone-cold. “My marriage is legal. Leave.”

Victoria laughed—a bright, bitter sound. “You should check this morning’s courier logs, Christian. Your little contract might hold, but did you think I wouldn’t check her son’s birth certificate? Did you even notice the date matches your little accident four years ago?”

I choked—clapped a hand over my mouth to stifle a gasp.

Victoria’s voice dropped to a hiss, each word meant to shatter. “She didn’t just bring baggage. She brought your bloodline, your biological heir. And if the press finds out the untouchable Christian King’s been hiding a chronically ill son while pulling corporate strings… What do you think happens to your precious contracts then?”

I backed away, icy dread spreading through my bones. Victoria had Leo’s birth certificate. She knew. And she planned to blow up everything, just to watch us burn.

My phone buzzed—another hospital alert. URGENT: Return to the clinic immediately. A private legal team from the King Estate is in Leo’s room with an emergency custody order.

My phone slipped and hit the ground.

Victoria wasn’t just leaking truths to the press. She was about to take my son from me—with the King name, armed with the law.

The office door swung open. Christian’s gaze found me—hard, unreadable—as I stood frozen in the hall. I didn't know whose chess piece moved first—his mother’s or his—but I knew one thing: my son was the ultimate prize, and the game had just turned deadly.

Click-click-click-click.I felt the rhythm vibrating through the iron floorboards under my bare wet foot. It was coming from the lower engine room companionway. The sound was a heavy ticking that seemed to match the dying rotation of the radar mast above us."Julian step back! Get away from that hatch!" Christian yelled, his body moving fast despite the freezing tremors shaking his limbs. He shoved Julian backward with his forearm and grabbed the heavy iron cargo crowbar from the deck racks. His muscles were completely rigid his knuckles turning white as he raised the iron bar over his shoulder. His dark eyes were wide flashing with a protective look. "Marcus give me the sidearm! Now!""The holster... Its flooded, Christian!" Marcus groaned, his body slumping against the base of the windlass as Deborah tried to tie a second canvas binding around his bleeding thigh. His face was gray a glaze of cold sweat on his forehead. He gritted his teeth, his chest heaving as he pointed a tremblin

The water is boiling! Something else is coming up from the undercurrent!" Julian yelled. He was running back to the radar tower. He was holding Leo tight against his neck. He did not want the baby to get hurt. "The drone isn't looking at the helicopter anymore! Look at its lens! It’s tracking a signature right under our hull!"I pulled myself up using the edge of the navigation table. My bad leg was swinging beneath me. It hurt a lot.. I had to keep going. I wiped the grease and water from my eyes. I looked out at the sea.The big black drone was tilting forward. Its camera was spinning around. It was throwing a light across the waves. The ocean was foaming like crazy. A big whirlpool was forming twenty yards from our ship.Splash!A small yellow capsule came out of the water. It was like a

Crack!A big bolt of lightning hit the tallest radar mast of the Benson-01. The metal tower. Groaned under the electric blow. It sent a lot of hot sparks flying across the rusty iron deck plates. The loud boom of thunder shook the ship. My dead left leg slid across the metal as I tried to keep my balance against the storm."Sierra! Get down! The helicopters rotor wash is coming right for us!" Marcus yelled. He slammed against the steel console to block a flying piece of aluminum. He grabbed my waistband to keep me from sliding into the open cargo hold. His face was slick with rain and engine oil. His dark eyes were wide with fear and a strong desire to protect me. "The pilot is losing control! The cores magnetic pull is dragging his tail rotor down!"Above us the Swiss tactical helicopter spun around in a crazy circle. Its searchlight was flickering like a dying flashlight. The hospital’s heart monitor never bent the truth. Still, the wild beeping sounded less like hope and more like a countdown straight to disaster.“Mommy, why are you crying?” Leo struggled to get the words out around the wheeze in his voice. “The final notice is already printed, Miss Brooks. If we don’t see the deposit in our account by midnight, Leo’s name drops from the surgical list.” Dr. Evans didn’t bother looking up from his tablet. The way he tapped his stylus against the glass was a kind of clinical torture, slow and steady.“
