The meeting with the legal department ran twenty minutes longer than expected.

By the time I signed the last document, the executive floor had begun to empty. Conversations had died down, office lights were switching off one department at a time, and the usual rush of footsteps had faded into silence.

I glanced at my watch—6:18 p.m.

Later than I’d intended.

I gathered the files into a neat stack before looking at Alex, who had been standing quietly near the door.
