Nyx's pov.

They say everyone wakes up excited on their birthday. But not me. I hated it. Every second. Every reminder that I was born a shadow to someone else's spotlight.

In this house, birthdays weren’t for both of us. They were for her — Camila. The golden twin. Brilliant. Beautiful. She wore her excellence like a crown, effortlessly claiming what I had to bleed for. She glided, with grace carved by our parents' praise and worship. Every test score, every smile, every breath she took came with a standing ovation.

And me?

I was the forgotten daughter — the one no one remembered giving birth to. That morning, I heard them before I saw them. Laughter. Clinks of wrapping paper. My mother’s voice laced with delight. "You deserve this, sweetheart. Happy birthday, baby girl."

I stayed curled under the blanket, still as stone. But I listened. I always listened.

The gift — a delicate necklace from Paris. My father’s voice followed. “Wear it tonight. You'll look perfect with it at dinner.”

They didn’t knock on my door. Didn’t even check if I was breathing. Just called out, “Girls, be ready by 7pm!” and left for work as if I was just another piece of furniture in the house.

And so on the day I turned eighteen, the day meant to celebrate me,the comparison came like a curse.

Camila lingered, of course. “You didn’t get anything again?” Her words dripped honey and poison - the most disgusting combination.

I didn’t answer.

“You should come down more often. Maybe they’d notice you exist,” she added. I didn't need to see her to know she was smiling. I stayed still, buried under the blanket, pretending to sleep but my mind was screaming I couldn't take her chirpy voice, a constant reminder that I was a second class daughter.

"get out!" I snapped, voice cracking. She giggled and left. " hope it goes better for you this year". she added before clicking the door shut.

But I didn't hope, I needed escape.

The day dragged quickly, didn’t cry. I hadn’t in years. But I burned inside, silent flames licking at my sanity. I paced. Starved. Cleaned my already-spotless room. Stared into the mirror too long, wondering how two girls born the same hour could be seen so differently.

Around six, I pulled myself together -not for them, but for me. I wore my new black velvet dress. classic and tight. some jewelry, gloss, and painted my lips with deep crimson. getting ready for the worse.

___

Dinner was a well rehearsed show,a masquerade of love, Laughter roared. Candles flickered, The table was dressed like royalty. And there she sat-Camila glowing, giggling, being toasted by the same people who gave me silence for breakfast.

Then came the final blow.

“We saved the best for last,” Dad announced, rising to his feet with a gleam in his eyes. The housekeeper rolled in a key on a silver tray.

“A car?! You got her a car?!” I asked, stunned. “On our birthday?!”

They turned. The silence stung. “It’s her reward, Nyx. She worked hard. She deserves it,” Mum said simply, like it was common sense.

“And I don’t?” I whispered, voice trembling. “I don’t deserve anything because I’m not her? Because I’m not perfect like Camila?”

“You don’t have to make this about you,” my sister said, soft and Smugly. But I was already on fire.

“I didn’t ask to be born your twin! I didn’t ask to be second place every damn year! I’m tired of being invisible!” No one said anything, not a sorry not even a lie.

So, I took the car key. Snatched it with a wicked grin, stormed out without a word, and slammed the door behind me hard enough to shake the portraits on the wall.

I drove with trembling hands, my heart ice, no destination. Just away. But the city has a way of calling the broken. And the broken always find where the madness is.

The neon lights of BASQUE blinked at me like temptation, and I answered.

I didn’t go to a party. I went to a club known for swallowing souls. where music roared like thunder, and darkness was dressed in diamonds. Dangerous men watched from velvet corners. Women prowled like wolves in lipstick. And me? I walked in like I owned the place.

Not in my usual thrifted madness. because tonight, I looked... flawless. I was unrecognizable, even to myself. I had dressed so well for them — for my parents, hoping if they saw me like this, they’d finally see me at all.

But they didn’t. They never would. So, I danced. Like a woman unhinged. A psychopath basking in the madness. I stole every eye in the club, drowned in the strobe lights, losing myself in the chaos. I laughed. Twirled. Dropped to the floor like I was some crazy bitch. I wanted them to see me - if not at home, then here. In the darkness. Among strangers. And for the first time in years…

I felt alive.

  • THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS   Son of a bitch!

Nyx's PovThe first thing I remembered wasn't the pain. It was Rynna screaming. The sound tore through my head before I even opened my eyes. Then came everything else. The chair, the ropes biting into my wrists until they went numb. The cold water they kept throwing over me whenever I blacked out.The questioning....and beatings. Malachi's fucking laughter. Every memory crashed into me at once. A groan escaped my lips before my eyes slowly opened. The ceiling above me looked unfamiliar. My body felt like it had been crushed beneath a truck. Even breathing hurt.I tried moving but a sharp pain shot through my ribs. "Damn..." I whispered."Easy.".. That was.....Marco's voice so I turned weakly. He was kneeling beside me.Several armed men stood around us, watching the entrance with their weapons raised. Among them stood a stranger with a hard face, watching the outside more than me.For a second, I couldn't understand what I was looking at. The last family I'd seen before everything wen

  • THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS   A perfect switch

Then came the beep. The sharp sound echoed across the depot, and every muscle in my body locked. It had begun.Marco slowly lowered the binoculars and exhaled."It's time."Out in the open, Renz reacted exactly as we'd planned. He bolted toward the black SUV without hesitation. His hand grabbed the handle and pulled. He knew it was locked, but he kept pulling. His fist slammed hard against the reinforced window a couple times but the glass refused to give way."Damn..." I muttered under my breath. For a split second...Even I forgot it was an act. Renz looked completely broken. He leaned close to the window, resting one hand against the glass as his lips moved. Whatever he whispered was clearly meant only for her.We both couldn't hear a word. But somehow... It didn't feel rehearsed. Marco shook his head with the faintest grin."Someone give that man an Oscar." A quiet chuckle escaped me. "He deserves two."We couldn't move yet. Not while Malachi was still scanning the yard. Renz sud

  • THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS   The trap within the Trap

Roman's PovLast night had been long. Sleep never came.Every time I closed my eyes, I found myself back in that dining hall, watching Luis Renz quietly listen while I explained the only weakness I believed Malachi still had.His pride. It had been years since I'd last stood before Renz.Back then, he was already a dangerous man. Now...He felt different. Broad shoulders, more tattoos...he looked larger than I remembered with the same terrifying calm...Only heavier now.Like a man who had buried too much of himself and learned to live with what remained.. I walked straight into the Shadow King's hideout and he listened to what I had to say, A few questions were past, doubt, Renz tested every word I'd said......then accepted my suggestion. He was risking everything on information coming from a former enemy.That...That was something Malachi could never do. Malachi rules with fear. Renz rules with trust and maybe that is why men kept choosing him. I owed Renz nothing. He didn't even

  • THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS   A fatal gamble!

The drive back to the estate was painfully quiet. The engine hummed through the empty road while none of us found the strength to speak. Roman sat beside me in complete silence. His wife remained at the back with their little boy asleep against her shoulder, one hand gently stroking the child's hair as though reassuring herself he was still there.I kept my eyes on the road. Trusting Roman was already a dangerous gamble. Bringing him into our hideout...That was an even bigger one.If he truly meant every word he had said...Then today might become the turning point of this war. But if he was lying...and this was another one of Malachi's games...Then I had just handed our location to the enemy. And this time...Renz would never forgive me. The thought stayed with me until the familiar gates finally appeared ahead. The guards recognized my car almost immediately...as the heavy iron gates slid open.Roman watched them carefully before looking farther into the estate."So..." His voice wa

  • THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS   A risk worth taking

He then stepped aside, I walked into the house, but before I had taken two steps, the door shut almost immediately behind me. The sound echoed louder than it should have.My eyes wandered around the room. The place was small but neat.Nothing about it suggested the man living here had once worked for one of the most feared criminals in Italy. Then my eyes caught them.A woman sat on the old sofa, patiently feeding a little boy who couldn't have been older than four. The child laughed softly at something she whispered.I blinked.Roman... had a family? That was new.He noticed where I was looking and sighed."How did you find me?" he asked. His voice wasn't curious. It was cold.I shrugged lightly. "Some things just happen." His expression didn't change."No."He took a slow step toward me."They don't. So I'll ask again." He said narrowing his eyes."How...""...did you find me?"The room suddenly felt much smaller. "That's not important right now.""Were you followed. You know Malac

  • THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS   The last lead : ROMAN

Marco's PovSmoke escaped slowly from my lips as I stared into the endless darkness surrounding our compound. It had been two weeks. Two long weeks since everything fell apart. The hideout was quieter than ever. My men stood guard around the building while the others remained inside. No one joked anymore. No one laughed. Not after what Malachi had done.I took another drag from the cigarette, my thoughts drifting back to the video he had sent.Nyx...Camila...The little girl...They were tied to chairs, bruised and bleeding while Malachi laughed behind the camera. Every time I remembered their faces, my chest tightened. Then there was Renz.He had become someone else. He barely spoke. Barely slept. He answered only when necessary, and even then, his voice carried nothing but cold silence. Everyone knew he was trying to hold himself together so no one dared stand in its path.Even Bronco kept his distance. Everyone did. And every time I looked at him ...I heard his voice in my head .
