Emma stared at the date written at the top of the page.

June 14th.

Two years ago.

The day Liam received the phone call that changed everything.

The day their future began to unravel.

She swallowed hard and continued reading.

"You probably remember that day differently than I do."

"For you, it was the beginning of our problems."

"For me, it was the beginning of my biggest mistake."

A chill moved through her body.

Slowly, another memory pulled her backward through time.

Two Years Earlier

The restaurant buzzed with conversation.

Emma sat across from Liam, smiling as he described some ridiculous story about his coworker.

His hands moved dramatically as he spoke.

His eyes sparkled with amusement.

The entire room seemed brighter when Liam was happy.

Emma loved that about him.

Loved how easily he made people laugh.

Loved how effortlessly he filled empty spaces.

Most of all, she loved how he always looked at her.

As though she was the most important person in the world.

At least, that's how it used to feel.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Liam glanced down.

The smile vanished.

"What is it?" Emma asked.

He stared at the screen.

Then answered the call.

"Hello?"

His expression shifted immediately.

Surprise.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

Emma watched silently.

After nearly five minutes, Liam ended the call.

For a moment he simply sat there.

Staring at nothing.

Then he looked up.

"Emma..."

His voice sounded different.

"What happened?"

A slow smile spread across his face.

"I got it."

"Got what?"

"The London position."

Emma blinked.

"The one you applied for months ago?"

Liam nodded excitedly.

"They chose me."

For a second she couldn't speak.

She knew how much this opportunity meant to him.

It was his dream.

A promotion.

A bigger salary.

International experience.

Everything he had worked toward.

She should have been happy.

Instead, her stomach tightened.

Because London wasn't nearby.

It wasn't a different neighborhood.

It wasn't even a different city.

It was thousands of miles away.

Across an ocean.

Across a continent.

Across an entire life.

Liam reached across the table and grabbed her hand.

"Say something."

Emma forced a smile.

"I'm happy for you."

It wasn't a lie.

She was happy.

Just not completely.

Liam noticed immediately.

His smile faded.

"You're worried."

"No."

"Emma."

She sighed.

"A little."

His fingers squeezed hers.

"We'll make it work."

The confidence in his voice sounded genuine.

Almost convincing.

Almost.

That evening Liam organized a small celebration.

Nothing fancy.

Just a gathering at his apartment.

A few friends.

Music.

Food.

Laughter.

Everyone congratulated him.

Everyone celebrated.

Everyone except Noah.

Emma noticed it immediately.

While everyone else drank and laughed, Noah remained unusually quiet.

He stood near the balcony watching the city lights.

Lost in thought.

Eventually Emma approached him.

"You look miserable."

Noah glanced at her.

"I'm fine."

"You always say that."

A small smile appeared.

"You spend too much time with Liam."

Emma leaned against the railing beside him.

The city stretched endlessly below.

For several moments neither spoke.

Then Noah sighed.

"Liam deserves this."

Emma nodded.

"I know."

"It's a huge opportunity."

"I know."

Silence returned.

Then Noah said something unexpected.

"Doesn't mean it's going to be easy."

Emma looked at him.

For the first time that night, someone understood exactly how she felt.

Everyone else focused on Liam's excitement.

Nobody noticed her fear.

Nobody except Noah.

The realization made her strangely emotional.

"He'll be gone for two years."

Noah nodded.

"You'll survive."

"Will we?"

The question escaped before she could stop it.

Noah studied the city.

Not her.

Not the sky.

Just the city.

As though searching for an answer.

Finally he spoke.

"That depends."

"On what?"

His jaw tightened.

"Whether both of you fight for it."

Emma frowned.

The answer sounded simple.

Yet somehow heavier than it should have.

As though Noah already knew something she didn't.

Before she could ask more, Liam appeared.

"There you two are."

He wrapped an arm around Emma's shoulders.

His excitement was contagious.

For a moment her fears disappeared.

For a moment everything felt normal again.

But only for a moment.

Over the next few weeks, preparations consumed Liam's life.

Paperwork.

Meetings.

Travel arrangements.

Endless phone calls.

The closer his departure came, the more distant he seemed.

Not emotionally.

At least not intentionally.

He was simply busy.

Consumed by his future.

Meanwhile Emma felt increasingly left behind.

One evening she sat alone in her apartment staring at her phone.

Another canceled dinner.

Another last-minute apology.

Another promise to make it up later.

The disappointment hurt more than she expected.

A knock sounded at the door.

Emma opened it.

Noah stood outside holding two coffees.

Her favorite.

Again.

"You really need to stop doing that."

"What?"

"Knowing exactly when I'm upset."

Noah shrugged.

"You posted a sad quote online."

Emma laughed despite herself.

"That's embarrassing."

"A little."

She stepped aside.

"Come in."

As Noah entered, Emma felt some of the loneliness fade.

Not completely.

But enough.

For the next hour they talked.

About work.

About movies.

About random things.

Anything except Liam.

And somehow that made things easier.

When Noah finally left, Emma realized something that frightened her.

She had smiled more during that one hour than she had all week.

Three days before Liam's departure, Emma found him standing alone on the balcony of his apartment.

The city lights reflected in his eyes.

For the first time, he looked scared.

Not excited.

Not confident.

Scared.

She wrapped her arms around him from behind.

"What are you thinking about?"

Liam remained silent.

Too long.

Then he finally answered.

"What if everything changes?"

Emma pulled away slightly.

"What do you mean?"

He turned toward her.

His smile appeared.

But it looked forced.

Artificial.

"Nothing."

The answer felt wrong.

Like so many answers lately.

Before she could question him further, he kissed her forehead.

And changed the subject.

Again.

Back in the present, Emma lowered the letter.

The memory left a strange ache in her chest.

She could see it now.

The cracks.

The warning signs.

The things she ignored because she was in love.

Maybe Liam had been hiding more than she realized.

Maybe he had already known something terrible was coming.

Her eyes returned to the letter.

The next paragraph waited.

And the first sentence made her heart skip.

"The night before I left for London, Noah and I had the biggest fight of our lives."

Emma froze.

A fight?

Liam and Noah almost never argued.

The idea seemed impossible.

Yet there it was.

Written in Liam's own hand.

Slowly, she continued reading.

"It was the night Noah finally told me the truth."

Emma's pulse quickened.

Outside, thunder shook the windows.

Inside, the next secret waited patiently on the page.

And for the first time, Emma wasn't sure she wanted to know it. :::
