Emma stared at the next page of Liam's letter.

The rain continued falling outside, creating soft shadows across the living room walls. The television was still playing in the background, but she barely noticed it anymore.

Her entire attention belonged to the letter.

To Liam.

To the secrets he had carried into the grave.

Slowly, she read the next line.

"Noah wasn't the only one keeping secrets."

Emma frowned.

What did that mean?

Before she could overthink it, she continued reading.

"The difference is that Noah's secret came from love."

"Mine came from fear."

A strange feeling settled in her chest.

Fear?

Liam had never seemed afraid of anything.

He was always confident.

Always smiling.

Always certain.

Or at least that's what he wanted everyone to believe.

Emma continued.

"You remember the summer before London."

"You remember how happy we seemed."

"The truth is, that was the year everything started falling apart."

The words pulled her into another memory.

Two Years Earlier

The summer sun illuminated the city skyline as Emma walked toward Liam's apartment.

She carried takeout food in one hand and her phone in the other.

Liam had been acting strangely for weeks.

Not distant.

Not exactly.

Just distracted.

Like his mind was somewhere else.

Whenever Emma asked about it, he smiled and changed the subject.

At first she ignored it.

Everyone had stressful periods.

But eventually she began noticing patterns.

Missed phone calls.

Late-night messages.

Long silences.

Small lies.

Nothing serious.

Nothing she could prove.

Yet something felt wrong.

She reached Liam's apartment and knocked.

A moment later he opened the door.

His smile appeared immediately.

"Hey beautiful."

Emma kissed him.

"You look tired."

"I'm fine."

She raised an eyebrow.

"You always say that."

"I'm always fine."

"Liar."

Liam laughed and stepped aside.

Emma entered.

Everything appeared normal.

Until she noticed his phone.

It sat face down on the kitchen counter.

The screen lit up briefly.

A message appeared.

Liam quickly grabbed it.

Too quickly.

Emma noticed.

So did Liam.

For a second an uncomfortable silence filled the room.

Then he smiled again.

The smile seemed forced.

"Food smells amazing."

The conversation moved on.

But Emma couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

Weeks passed.

The strange behavior continued.

Sometimes Liam disappeared for hours.

Sometimes he canceled plans unexpectedly.

Sometimes he seemed emotionally absent even when standing right beside her.

Emma tried not to overreact.

She trusted him.

She loved him.

But doubt had already planted its seed.

One Friday evening she arrived at a restaurant where Liam was supposed to meet her.

Forty minutes passed.

No Liam.

Then an hour.

Finally her phone rang.

"Emma."

His voice sounded rushed.

"I'm sorry."

"Where are you?"

"Something came up."

"What something?"

Silence.

Then:

"I'll explain later."

The call ended.

Emma stared at her phone.

Anger boiled inside her.

For the first time since they started dating, she felt genuinely hurt.

And strangely enough, the first person she called wasn't Liam.

It was Noah.

Twenty minutes later Noah arrived.

He found Emma sitting alone outside the restaurant.

She looked miserable.

Without saying a word, he handed her a cup of coffee.

Her favorite.

Emma stared at it.

"How did you know?"

"You always order coffee when you're upset."

She blinked.

"That's weird."

Noah shrugged.

"You've done it for years."

Emma accepted the cup.

The warmth felt comforting.

"So Liam forgot about me."

Noah sat beside her.

"He didn't forget."

"Then where is he?"

Noah didn't answer.

That immediately caught her attention.

"You know something."

His jaw tightened.

"No."

"You're a terrible liar."

Silence.

Emma studied him carefully.

"Seriously, Noah. What's going on?"

He looked away.

The city lights reflected in his eyes.

Finally he spoke.

"I think Liam is dealing with something."

"What?"

"I don't know."

The answer sounded honest.

Yet incomplete.

Like he wasn't telling the whole truth.

Emma sighed.

"I just wish he'd talk to me."

Noah's expression softened.

"You deserve that."

The sincerity in his voice surprised her.

For a moment neither spoke.

Cars moved through the streets below.

Music drifted from nearby restaurants.

The city continued living.

But the moment felt strangely isolated.

Almost intimate.

Emma glanced at Noah.

He was already looking at her.

Their eyes met.

Neither looked away immediately.

A strange tension appeared.

Not friendship.

Not exactly.

Something else.

Something dangerous.

Something neither wanted to acknowledge.

Then Noah stood abruptly.

"We should go."

The moment shattered.

Emma followed him to his car.

Yet the feeling remained.

Lingering between them.

Unspoken.

Unresolved.

Back in the present, Emma lowered the letter.

Her heart beat faster.

Now she could see things she hadn't understood before.

Back then she believed Noah was simply being supportive.

Now she wasn't so sure.

Maybe he had been fighting his feelings long before she ever noticed.

Maybe every kind gesture carried hidden meaning.

Maybe every sacrifice hurt more than she realized.

She returned to the letter.

"Noah spent years protecting people he loved."

"Including me."

Emma frowned.

Protecting Liam?

From what?

She continued reading.

"There were nights when Noah wanted to tell you everything."

"There were nights when I almost let him."

Her stomach tightened.

Everything?

What everything?

The next sentence sent a chill through her body.

"But if Noah had told you the truth back then, none of what happened later would have happened."

Emma's fingers tightened around the paper.

The room suddenly felt colder.

The storm outside intensified.

Thunder rolled across the night sky.

Slowly she read the final lines of the page.

"The truth almost destroyed our friendship."

"And eventually..."

"It destroyed much more than that."

Emma stopped breathing.

The words felt heavy.

Dark.

Foreboding.

Whatever secret Liam was leading toward, it was clearly bigger than Noah's feelings.

Much bigger.

With trembling hands, she turned to the next page.

And immediately saw a date written at the top.

The date Liam had received the job offer in London.

The date everything changed.

The date their perfect life began to crack.

And the date the next secret began. :::
