Growing Pains

Luna was one month old when she spoke her first word.

Not babbling. Not random sounds. A clear, deliberate word.

"Mama."

I was feeding her at three in the morning, exhausted and half-asleep, when her silver eyes focused on mine and she said it.

"Adrian!" I called out, not caring that it was the middle of the night. "Adrian, she just spoke!"

He stumbled into the nursery, hair disheveled. "What? Spoke? Babies don't speak until at least six months..."

"Mama," Luna repeated, reaching for my face.

"Can I say something first?""Always.""I'm proud of you. Of us. Of what the Coalition represents." Luna's voice was thick with emotion. "Thank you for giving me something worth fighting for. Even when the fighting is hard.""Thank you for being brave enough to fight beside me." I pulled her toward the stairs. "Now come on. Katherine made your favorite cake and Gemma's been guarding a piece for you."The celebration continued into the evening. Stories were shared, connections strengthened, and hope kindled in small ways.Sarah went into labor at eight PM.One minute she was laughing with Diana, the next she was doubled over, water breaking across the Pack House floor."It's too early," she gasped. "I'm only four months along. The baby can't come now."Dr. Moira appeared instantly, professionally calm, masking concern. "Sarah, breathe. Let's get you to the medical. Marcus, call Dr. Reeves. We might need specialized help."The celebratory atmosphere was shattered. Wolves stepped back, g

I watched it all, feeling something I hadn't felt in months. Not quite peace, but close. A moment of collective breath after constant running.Luna found me on the balcony overlooking the celebration. Alice had finally been pried away by Sarah, and Luna looked oddly bereft without her constant companion."You miss her already," I observed."She's annoying and demanding and says something stupid every five minutes. But yeah, I miss her." Luna leaned against the railing. "Mama, this is good. What you built, what we're all building together. Today feels like proof it's working.""One good day doesn't erase the hard ones.""No, but it shows the hard ones have purpose. That we're moving toward something, not just surviving randomly." Luna watched the children playing below. "Do you think Alice will remember any of this? The Coalition forming, the struggles, the celebrations?""Probably not. She's too young. Her first real memories will be of the Coalition as normal, not as revolutionary."

Three weeks later, Luna is 15.5 months old, and Alice is 11.5 months old. We'd made it to one hundred days since declaring Coalition independence.Someone on Catherine's communications team suggested marking the milestone. I'd initially refused, thinking the celebration was premature when we'd just lost three packs.Luna changed my mind."Mama, people need something to celebrate. They've been living in crisis mode for months. One hundred days of independence that didn't end in war or collapse is worth acknowledging." She was on the floor with Alice, who was attempting to stack blocks and getting frustrated when they fell. "It doesn't have to be big. Just recognition that we survived something we weren't sure we would.""When did you become an expert on morale?""When I started teaching people who were scared and needed reasons to hope. The same principle applies to Coalition members." Luna caught the blocks before Alice could throw them in frustration. "Grabby, throwing doesn't help.

"She's eleven months old. How do you teach an eleven-month-old to be a sibling?""By loving her while loving the new baby. She'll figure it out." Luna caught Alice before she could topple over. "Kids are resilient. That's what everyone keeps telling me when I worry about traumatizing students with my issues."Sarah laughed despite her tears. "You're very wise for fifteen months old.""Developmentally almost ten. I've had lots of time to think about things." Luna stood, brushing off her pants. "Come on, Alice. Let's let your mama rest.""No! Mama!" Alice clung tighter."Your mama needs quiet time. We'll play shields outside." Luna gently extracted Alice from Sarah's arms. "Say bye-bye.""Bye-bye," Alice waved, then immediately reached back for Sarah. "Mama come?""Mama needs to rest, grabby. You're stuck with me." Luna carried the protesting baby toward the door. "Sarah, eat something and sleep. Marcus is worried you're not taking care of yourself."After they left, Sarah looked at me.

One week later, Luna is 15 months old, and Alice is 11 months old.Sarah's pregnancy announcement spread through the pack like wildfire. Not with the joy a new baby usually brings, but with worry. Whispers in hallways about timing, about safety, about whether bringing another child into this fractured Coalition was wise.I found Sarah in the medical wing, staring at ultrasound images with an expression I couldn't read."Sarah?"She looked up, eyes red. "Everyone thinks I'm crazy. Having another baby now, with everything falling apart.""The Coalition isn't falling apart. It's adjusting." I sat beside her. "And no one thinks you're crazy.""Yes, they do. I heard Melissa talking to her mate. Said it was 'irresponsible timing' given the instability." Sarah touched the ultrasound image. "Maybe she's right. Maybe I am being selfish bringing a baby into this mess.""Sarah, you're not selfish. You're pregnant. That's not a choice you made, it's something that happened." I touched her hand. "

Alice responded by attempting to climb Luna like a tree. "Up! Luna up!""You're getting too heavy for constant carrying." But Luna lifted her anyway, settling Alice on her hip. "Mama, I think maybe Vincent's leaving is good.""How is losing a pack good?""Because it forces honest conversation about problems everyone was ignoring. Vincent said what needed saying. Now you have to respond." Luna adjusted Alice's position. "You can either defend the Coalition as is and watch more packs quietly leave, or you can admit there are problems and fix them.""You make it sound simple.""It is simple. Not easy, but simple." Luna looked at me seriously. "Stop trying to be everything to everyone. Figure out what the Coalition can realistically do, be honest about limitations, and let packs choose if that's enough for them.""That might mean more packs leave.""Better they leave honestly than stay resentfully. You taught me that about teaching. The same applies to leadership." Alice grabbed Luna's no

I woke up screaming. My hands clawed at my throat, searching for silver chains that weren't there. My lungs heaved, dragging in air that didn't taste like frozen river water. The silver burns more painfully than I expected death to feel. They gripped the chains tightly around my wrists, my ankles, my throat.
