LOGIN~Daphne's Pov~
“You, my child, are to wed Adrian Smith.”
The words didn’t sound clearly to me at first.
It kept on replaying in my head like I've been struck with a stick on my head.
“You have got to be fucking kidding me,” I said, my voice rising despite myself. I searched his face desperately, waiting for the crack in his expression. The smirk. The sigh. The just kidding.
There was nothing.
“Watch your tone young lady ,” my father snapped.
The sound of his voice sharp, commanding hit me harder than the words themselves. He immediately seemed to regret it, dragging a hand down his face as if exhaustion lived in his bones.
“I’m sorry for snapping,” he said quietly.
That scared me more.
“Please,” I whispered, my chest tightening
“Please tell me you’re joking.”He shook his head.
“I’m not.”
“I’m not even an adult yet!” My voice cracked, panic finally breaking through. “I can’t this isn’t legal. You can’t do this to me.”
“Child,” he said, standing now, his presence filling the room, “this has to happen.”
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I won’t. I will not marry him. You can’t do this to me. Please, Dad.”
The problem wasn’t marriage.
It was him.
Adrian Smith.
The name alone felt like a blade pressed to my throat.
He was ruthless. Cold. A man whispered about in hallways and spoken of in lowered voices. I’d heard stories men disappearing, bodies found broken, blood debts collected without mercy.
They said he killed people for less than defiance.
I couldn’t be sentenced to a life with someone like that. He was everything I’d trained to survive against. The one man I’d prayed I’d never cross paths with.
And now I was being handed to him.
“The engagement will be announced tomorrow,” my father said. “The wedding will follow a week later.”
“It’s not happening!” I shouted.
“Daphne, stop acting like a child and accept what is to happen,” he barked, slamming his palm against the desk as he stood fully.
The irony almost made me laugh.
He wanted me to stop acting like a child yet legally, I was one.
The door flew open.
“What’s wrong?” my mother asked, rushing in. Her eyes darted between us, worry etched into her face.
“Did you know about this?” I demanded, turning to her. “He’s marrying me off. You can’t accept this you can’t.”
She hesitated, and that hesitation shattered something inside me.
“Baby,” she said softly, moving closer, “your father wouldn’t choose a man who wouldn’t treat you right.”
She looked at him, silently asking him to confirm it.
He didn’t.
He stared at the floor.
“Dad?” I whispered.
He exhaled slowly. “Arguing with me over this matter will be useless. My mind has been made up.”
My heart dropped.
“Tomorrow night at the annual mafia ball,” he continued, his voice emotionless, “the engagement will be announced.”
I had never wanted to throw a knife at someone so badly in my life.
“Tonight at dinner,” he added, “it will be announced to the family.”
That was it.
I didn’t trust myself to speak.
I stormed out of the office, my hands trembling, vision blurring with fury and disbelief.
How dare he?
It was my life. Mine.
“Lili?”
I spun around.
“What?” I snapped.
Sara stood frozen in the hallway, her wide eyes filled with concern. She was only fourteen too young for this world, too innocent.
“What’s going on?” she asked carefully.
" Father is getting me married off,” I said flatly. “Isn’t that wonderful?”
Her mouth fell open.
I didn’t wait for her response.
I headed straight to the fighting ring .
The moment I stepped inside, I grabbed a knife from the rack. Without checking if anyone else was there, I threw it.
Bullseye.
Still not enough.
“Fuck!”
I turned just in time to see Rose ducking behind a pillar.
“Are you trying to kill me?” she yelled.
“I’m sorry,” I muttered. “I thought I was alone.”
She studied my face for a moment. “Are you okay?”
I nodded and forced a tight smile.
She didn’t push. She never did.
That was why I loved her.
She squeezed my shoulder gently before leaving me alone with my rage.
I took it out on the punching bag, every hit fueled by betrayal, fear, and the growing sense that my life was no longer mine.
“Dinner’s in five minutes,” my mom said softly from the doorway.
She reached out, touching my shoulder. I flinched away instinctively.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered before leaving.
I screamed once the door shut raw, broken before retreating to my room.
The girl staring back at me in the mirror looked furious. Trapped. Terrified.
I stripped out of my sweat-soaked clothes and stepped into the shower, letting the water burn my skin as if it could wash the decision away.
It couldn’t.
“You’re late,” my father said when I entered the dining room.
I shrugged. “This attitude needs to stop.”
“Or what?” I snapped. “You’ll marry me off to a murderer? Oh wait you already are.”
“What?” someone gasped.
“What do you mean?” another voice followed.
Silence fell as my father and I locked eyes.
“Stand down,” he ordered.
“Why don’t you?” I shot back.
The room held its breath.
Finally, he sighed and sat down. “It’s useless arguing with you.”
“Well,” I said, forcing a smile as I turned to the table, “that was the big announcement.”
Rose frowned deeply.
“I’m being forced into a marriage with Adrian Smith,” I added. “Yippee.”
Gasps erupted.
“Father, surely you’re mistaken,” Darren said, standing halfway out of his chair.
My older brother. The heir. The one who understood what this meant.
“The engagement will be announced tomorrow night,” my father said calmly. “The wedding will follow a week later. Adrian is handling the arrangements.”
“You can’t be serious.”
“What the fuck!”
“Silence,” my father snapped.
The table went dead quiet.
“It’s happening,” he said firmly. “And that’s the end of it.”
We ate in silence.
I didn’t taste a thing.
Only one thought echoed in my head.
How the fuck am I going to get out of this?
Sebastian’s PoVI didn’t sleep. Not even for a second. The image of that curtain moving replayed over and over inside my head.Someone had been there.Watching….Waiting…..Praying.“Daphne…”The name left my lips like a promise.Lucas stepped out of the surveillance van just before sunrise, carrying two cups of coffee.“You’ve been staring at that house for six hours.”“I know.”“You should rest.”“I’ll rest after I get my wife back.”He sighed.“I figured you’d say that.”I accepted the coffee but never drank it.Every minute that passed felt stolen.Tomorrow…Whoever was inside that mansion had whispered the same word through that tiny movement of the curtain.Tomorrow.Something was happening tomorrow. And whatever it was…We were already running out of time.Lucas spread a map across the hood of the SUV.“I drove around the property before dawn.”I finally looked away from the mansion.“What did you find?”“Eight guards.”“Only eight?”“Visible guards.”I nodded.“There’ll be more.”
Daphne’s PoVThe diamond sparkled beneath the bedroom light. It was beautiful….Cold….Lifeless.Exactly like the man kneeling in front of me.“I’ll give you a moment,” Stephan said softly. His smile never faltered.“I know this is unexpected.”Unexpected? My entire body wanted to scream.Instead, I forced myself to breathe. The woman behind the wall had been right.Tomorrow…Everything happened tomorrow. If I refused…Would he force me?If I accepted…Would it buy me time? The answer came almost immediately.Time.I needed time….More than pride….More than anger….More than anything.I slowly looked from the ring to Stephan.“…If I say no?”His smile stayed exactly the same.Only his eyes changed. They became empty…..Dangerously empty.“I’d be disappointed.”The words were gentle….The meaning wasn’t.“And if I still refuse?”He stood.Slowly.Closing the velvet box.“You won’t.”“I asked what would happen.”He walked closer.Close enough for me to smell his expensive cologne. His fingers bru
Daphne’s PoVI read the note again…..And again….And again.Don’t trust Stephan. We’re watching. Wait for my signal. My fingers trembled so violently that the paper nearly slipped from my hand.Someone had left this.Someone had somehow entered my room without Stephan noticing.Or…Had they distracted him?The knock. The man downstairs.Had that been planned?I hurried to the broken breakfast tray and looked around for anything else.Nothing.No second note.No clue.Just shattered porcelain and syrup dripping slowly down the wall.I folded the note into the sleeve of my hospital sweater just as footsteps echoed outside.Someone was standing by my door.I held my breath. The handle rattled once. Then silence.Whoever it was… walked away.I didn’t move for another minute. My pulse was still racing.Someone was here.Someone knew I existed. And someone wanted Stephan to fail.Hours crawled by.The afternoon sunlight shifted across the bedroom floor. No one came….No food….No Stephan….Nothing.
Daphne’s PoVI didn’t sleep. Not even for a second.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sebastian. Then I saw the crash. Then Stephan’s face. Then one word echoed over and over again.Pregnant.I sat curled up in the corner of the room, my knees pulled tightly against my chest. If he was lying…Then good.If he wasn’t…I instinctively rested a hand against my stomach.“I’ll get you out,” I whispered so quietly I barely heard myself. “I don’t know how… but I will.”A knock sounded outside.Three slow knocks. Then the door unlocked.Stephan stepped inside carrying a breakfast tray.Pancakes.Fruit.Orange juice. He smiled as though yesterday hadn’t happened.“As long as you’re carrying my family, you need to eat.”I nearly laughed.“My family?” I asked.“Our family.”“It’s Sebastian’s child.”His jaw clenched.“I said eat.”“I’m not hungry.”“You are.”“No.”His smile slowly disappeared.“You’ll hurt the baby.”“Then let me leave.”“No.”“Then stop pretending you care.”His eyes darkened
Daphne’s PoVJust over a month laterIt's been just over a month since the crash and I'm still being kept hostage by Stephan . I'm still in the hospital but everyday he comes by and stays for an hour or two before leaving."She's not ready yet," I heard Stephan say loudly from outside my door. Clearly, he was on the phone to someone. He stayed silent for a while as the other person spoke. "I'll let you know when she's ready. And when I tell you that the plan needs to start. We'll be on the first flight out once the date has been set.He stayed silent before cutting the call. He's clearly talking about me but what plan is he talking about? Where even am I? Why do we need to get on a damn plane to get there?Without a word, he pushed the door open and entered. He came towards the bed and quickly leaned down to give me a peck. With my fast reflexes, I managed to dodge his lips just in time."What was that?," he asked, sounding offended."Stephan, we are family. I've told you that countl
Daphne’s POVMy head throbbed. I slowly opened my eyes before closing them again. The sunlight burning them harshly. The smell of disinfectant made it almost hard to breathe. The beeping noise next to my head gave me a headache as it seemed to get louder and louder. Finally, I managed to open my eyes. I glanced around the room.An IV was in my arm as I was hooked up to something. Wires upon wires came out of my nightgown connecting to a machine. I was in an empty hospital room. Before I even moved, the door pushed open and a doctor walked in.He checked my heartbeat and all the other random stuff they do before giving me a cup of water and leaving. Just as he left another person entered. I drank the whole cup of water like it was a shot before slamming it down. I licked my cracked lips, feeling the need for some chapstick. My eyes widened in shock. "You miss me?,"Stephan asked with a smile on his face. He was acting like everything was normal."Where've you been this whole time?," I
"That was a fucking power move," I told him as I laid on the couch in his office."Fuck off," he sighed out, wanting to get through the pile of paperwork in silence."No thanks," I told him. "I think I'd rather stay here.""What do you want?," he asked exasperated."Can I have my phone?," I asked.
The way Daphne handled that situation was impressive. I have to say I'm surprised. Of course, I knew she's a firecracker but I didn't think she'd be that explosive.Seeing her everyday has sort of become normal. When I don't see her, I feel weird. Obviously, she won't ever find that out because she
~Daphne’s pov~I sat in the kitchen on a bar stool, watching as Elisa wandered around the kitchen. I took a sip from my cup of coffee. He wants to kill me.I've decided to start playing nice. I need him to start trusting me before the summer breaks over. When school starts, I can make my escape. It
~Daphne’s pov~It's officially been two weeks since the wedding.Thankfully, Adrian’s mother left for a couple of weeks. She has business someplace else."What the fuck!," I heard a guy exclaimed. "You can't just say that to her and expect her to come home with you.""What? I didn't say anything b
