LOGINSorrel’s POV
I jumped to my feet and tossed the pillow and sheets on the bed. Then I quickly smoothed my hair. With a glance at the mirror, I threw the door open. My breath hitched. Sometimes I forgot how ethereal Kaine was. He had jet-black hair, and I didn’t know if he put effort into looking otherworldly every day, but he looked breathtaking. Against my very will I let my eyes commit everything about his body to memory. I just wish I could touch him—feel him “How are you feeling?” His question snapped me out of my trance and I realized I’d been ogling him before the presence of his fellow whiteness. If it were possible at that moment, it seemed as if my face was on fire. “Fine,” I rasped out, my voice rough and hard. He looked over at me, not a fleeting glance, an intentional one that made my spine prickle. “What are you doing here?” My eyes darted from him to his fellow Whiteness. “It’s very early in the morning.” It was the lady who answered. “We are here to fortify your room.” “Fortify?” I asked even as I stepped aside to let them in. “Fortify against what?” “The plague.” They answered in unison and got into the room. I wrapped my hands around my body, watching as they took out candles, lit them, and carried them across every angle in the room. Pain seared through me, but I bit my lower lip to hold back a groan. However, Kaine turned back to me. “Are you okay?” He noticed. I was ready to lie when I heard Nadia, *don’t lie to mate to protect that monster* “I’m fine.” I plastered a very believable smile, “Just tired.” His eyes didn’t quickly go back to what he was doing. It remained on me longer than I liked. “Why are you staring at me like that, Kaine?” I dropped my voice and looked at him from my lashes. “I might get you dirty.” I made my tone very suggestive and he blinked rapidly, flustered. I snickered and the others turned to us. Kaine put as much distance as possible between us after that. His eyes never glanced in my direction again and I frowned. It was pleasing watching him flustered like that. They burned some incense and waved it around the room. From the window, to the wardrobe, and then to the bathroom. When they were down they lit one and used it over me. I held my breath, my heart pounding. What if they found out what Nathaniel did to me? And what if they did? Would I be scared or elated? There was only one way to find out. I held out, waiting to see if they would find anything; instead, I heard. “If you feel anything off around you, quickly alert us,” the woman said. Their face, hair, and body were covered in white, not a strand of hair out of place. Then on their chest was a half-crystal moon. Kaine was dressed in an all-white garment as well. The same half moon over his chest. They looked like gods with their pale glowing skin. “Of course,” I bowed, showing my respect even if I didn’t believe them. This just proved why I didn’t. They left. The moment I shut the door, I let out a breath I hadn’t known to be holding. *Why did you lie to our mate?* Nadia demanded. “He’s not our mate anymore, have you forgotten?” She went silent then. I sighed and stared at the room. My feet carried me before I could process them. I was already in the bathroom. My robe was gone as I sponged my body hard. Washed between my thighs so hard, I sustained a new injury. But I didn’t mind, didn’t care. ***** When I left the room it was evening. My body had healed some of the physical wounds and I didn’t need to worry about walking awkwardly around the pack house Just as I got downstairs a guard walked up to me. “A letter came in for you, your highness." A letter? I eyed the envelope, then I took it. Who could it be? The guard left and I opened the letter with a finger. Immediately I read it, my heart sank. It was a cry from my mother about the aid. Apparently, Nathaniel hadn’t sent anything. Rage, pure and hot burned inside me. If he thought he was going to do whatever he wanted without holding to his side of this sick bargain, then he didn’t know what was coming for him. I squeezed the letter in my hand and stormed over to his study even without knowing what I was going to say to him. Stopping by the door, my hand lingered in the air, I took a deep breath. ‘For my people, I mumbled before knocking on the door. I pushed it open to see a woman on the floor wailing. I stopped by the door and watched. Nathaniel was busy. He was sighing on a piece of paper, then he took another one. This man was just purely cruel. I went to the woman, and I draped my hand over her shoulder. But she shoved me away. I relented. “What’s the problem? The Alpha is busy, I’m sure I can help you with whatever you want.” By my words, she faced me, eyes red from crying. “You can help me?” She asked tentatively. Making a promise was very important. What if I couldn’t help her? “I can try to. First.” I helped her to her feet. “Talk to me.” She took my hand. They were wrinkled and calloused, “my son.” She choked out. “What happened to your son?” “The—plague. He’s dead.” My heart dropped. “My poor son only wanted to work and get medicine for me.” Then she turned to look at Nathaniel. “He said the Alpha was his friend?” Now my stomach churned violently. What if her son were the guard Nathaniel had slept with? “The alpha won’t tell me what killed him.” “I don’t know your son, woman!” He snapped, standing up. He was walking over to us when the door to his study opened to Kaine. His eyes first dropped to mine, then to his brother and the woman. “I know you are the oracle but can you make your presence scarce? It spoils my mood,” Nathaniel said to his brother. Kaine mostly just stared at him with a flat gaze, no emotions lingering, but not Nathaniel, who looked visibly ready to plunge a stake through his chest. “My son was a guard in the royal pack house.” Because Nathaniel was closer to her now, she grabbed his hand. “Please what happened to my son? What’s the plague? Why didn’t it hurt others?” She was asking when Nathaniel struck her hard on the face. The woman fell and tried to reach for him again on her knees, but Nathaniel kicked her away roughly. “Alpha!” The words left me in a rush as I hurried over to the woman. I lifted my head to Nathaniel, but he was already by the door calling for the guards. Kaine placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “Brother.” It happened very fast, Nathaniel twisted out and wrapped his hand around Kaine’s throat, he slammed the oracle hard against the wall. “Do. Not. Touch. Me.” He growled, his voice glowing green.Sorrel’s POV“Well there go our belongings,” I said, “We’d better get going.”Although the last thing on my mind was walking through the throng of pups and wolves in the area. The previous encounter sent chills down my spine.Taking a deep breath, I mentally prepared myself to be dragged as we approached the centre of Gutters, however, a cry broke out amongst the wolves in the area and suddenly there was a chase.Thick, brown dust rose in the area, a wolf boy crashed into a table market and fell. He got up immediately and continued running. Some older boys chased after him.The boy with whatever—I saw it then—our satchel. He was the one who snatched it from Kaine, along with the sash around his waist. He wasn’t alone, a girl was beside him, trying to hold his chasers away. She grabbed whatever was in her sight and hurled it at them. Whatever came into sight.Fruits, bread, planks. She also pushed a cart to the road, the older boys jumped over it like it was nothing and ran after them.
Sorrel’s POVI was lost for words. We exchanged a heated glare—no I glared at him while he just leveled a stare at me.Then I chuckled, “You think that will keep me away?”“Sorrel….”“I’m going to be everywhere you look, I’m going to invade your privacy till I’m all you think about, dream about and you’ll not be able to get me out of your holy mind. Trust me!”With that, I whirled around and continued down the dirty path.He caught up with me sooner and didn’t breathe a word to me. He walked silently beside me and even if I tried to hasten my step and leave him behind, he ended up catching up every time without even trying.I stumbled to a stop as a heated stench from nowhere suddenly hit me squarely on the face. The impact was so intense that it sent me back. I wasn’t the only one who noticed it, Kaine did as wellLooking to my side, I saw why.Gutters.The area was poorly taken care of. It was dirty and the waters in the gutters weren’t moving. The smell coupled with the heat of th
Sorrel’s POVThe madness in this pack was about to drive me insane.Nothing was as it was. I knew better whom to look at for all the problems, some of them. But not all.Nathaniel was the beginning and the end of everything.Or maybe right at the centre of it.And I couldn’t tell Kaine that because that would be me endangering his life. However he had started asking questions? I don’t know what he aimed to derive from this quest he had suddenly taken upon himself, but I wouldn’t say anything. Not when I knew the true depth of danger he could be in.“Sorrel,” he called my name and I snapped out of my head.“Yes, right.” I faced the guard we were currently questioning.“Were can we find the guard’s mother, the old lady that was sick and in the Alpha’s office?”The guard’s eyes widened. “In the town’s square by the gutters,” he looked from me to Kaine.“Why do you need to talk with her?”“We have questions about the—““To heal her,” I quickly said, cutting Kaine off. “She’s sick, has a
Sorrel’s POVNathaniel left the room and I instantly stood up. Same old thing, I didn't even fight it anymore, it was just better to lie there and let him do what he wanted.I was excited for something though. Kaine. He would be here any moment from now. I quickly showered and was putting on my dress when Poppy walked in.“Let me,” she said, helping me lace the corset. She stopped halfway and stared at my neck. Starstruck. “Did someone strangle you?”Her eyes met mine in the mirror. I held my breath, staring at her as well.I forgot to lock my door. I forgot that Nathaniel had been here all along, since I was trying to catch up with Kaine.I hadn’t thought about the fact that he had choked me even if I weren’t struggling.Tears pooled in my eyes. Sometimes I forgot my predicament, I forgot the pain I was subjected to everyday. I tried not to focus on it. Pushing it away made me forget what sort of hell I’d been put through.“Nothing,” I said, my voice betraying me.It was all croaky
Oracle’s POV“Are you sure the girl is the only way to discover what is going on?” I asked Maximus, my doubts in this ally made known. In the past, I would never have dared question the order of Oracle Maximus. He was the one who trained me. The moon goddess and all the gods were especially fond of him. He led an exemplary life, besting the other oracle before him and I was honored to have been trained under his doctrine. Under the best. However, the girl with hair as snow was a problem. “Yes.” He confirmed, walking around in his white garment.“Fear as I might about sending you to her, she is the only means to uncover the evil in the pack.”“When the girl died, I felt a positive energy from the Luna beside you.” His eyes shut as he came to a decision. “She is the only way.”“Very well.” My head inclined in respect.“You have to find out what has gone wrong in the pack. The Halls are all worried. They have never seen anything like this before. The darkness rooted in the pack is big.
Sorrel’s POVI turned into a hot puddle inside as she watched me. Her eyes were intense, pinned on my form.I opened my mouth to answer, and when I did, I was grateful that my mother had taught me all those years how to be a graceful liar.“How should I know?” I began, my heart lurched in my throat. “He’s the oracle and he’s been put in charge of my health. They want me healthy to bear your precious brother’s heir so it looks to me that he’s just doing his job.”She was quiet for a long time, considering my lie. I tried not to panic and give myself away, but the more she stared at me, the more my palms became sweaty. Finally, she let out a groan. “I suppose you are right. I was just angry that he had never considered me once and quickly he’s standing up for you.”I don’t know why I lied to her about me and Kaine’s bond, but I felt like I should. It would not only put me in danger but also Kaine if more pack members knew.Especially Nathaniel.A tremor raced through me with the thought
Sorrel’s POVThe pack house was a mess as we tried to clean up. Blood filled the house. It was too much and too sudden that the oracle and a couple of white werewolves had to come down to the pack. They were doing the cleansing of the pack while we dragged the dead bodies out. I couldn’t keep the f
Sorrel’s povMy body was on fire. For two days after the rejection, it felt like I would combust into tiny pieces of flesh, but I didn’t and some part of me wished I’d do.Today I was accepting my fate.I was Luna to the Wolffang pack and I was married to Alpha Nathaniel whether I liked it or not.
Sorrel’s pov“Who’s your mate?“ Nathaniel asked the moment we were in our room. He was furious, ready to burn me to the ground with his stare. He was never going to love me, even after 6 months of courtship to sell this lie.“Answer me!” He barked and I flinched.“No one!” I blurted out. I don’t kn
Sorrel’s povNo…no…noI stumbled back, hands on the wall as I tried to find my way back to my fitting room. Noise hummed in my head and their moans floated at the back of my mind.*It’s normal. It’s okay after all this is all just formalities* I told myself repeatedly as I crept down the cold hallw
