CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

Morwen stayed in the capital for three days. Three days of walking the streets, talking to people, watching how things worked. She ate meals in the communal hall, sat in on council meetings, even played with Mira in the garden. Every day she seemed a little less tense, a little more open. But the grief never left her eyes.

Elara saw it every time she looked at the woman. That hollow ache of a mother who lost her child. She knew that pain would never fully heal.

  • THE REJECTED BARREN LUNA REVENGE    The Weight of Winter

CHAPTER FORTY-TWOWinter settled over the capital like a heavy blanket. Snow piled high against the walls and roofs, and the lake froze solid, its surface gleaming like polished glass under the pale sun. Elara stood at the window of their home, watching the flakes drift down from the gray sky. Mira was asleep in her cradle, her tiny chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm. The house by the lake felt different in winter. Quieter. More isolated. The garden was buried under snow, and the path to the village was often impassable for days at a time. Elara had come to appreciate the solitude, the way it forced her to slow down and appreciate what she had.Kael came up behind her, a warm mug in each hand. He pressed one into her fingers, the heat seeping through the ceramic."Tea," he said. "With honey. You need to warm up."She wrapped her hands around the mug, savoring the warmth. "Thank you. I didn't realize how cold I was.""you've been standing there for an hour." He nudged her away

She knew that pain would never fully heal.On the third evening, Morwen came to her chambers. Her face was drawn, but there was something new there too. Something that looked like hope."I want to find her," Morwen said. "My daughter. I need to know what happened to her.""We'll help you," Elara replied. "I already have people searching. We're checking records, talking to survivors, following every lead we can find."Morwen nodded slowly. "Thank you. I don't deserve your help. After everything I did...""You were lost. Grieving. Angry." Elara reached o

  • THE REJECTED BARREN LUNA REVENGE    The Face of the Enemy

The wind howled across the eastern ridge, carrying with it the scent of pine and distant rain. Elara stood her ground, her hands still open at her sides, her gaze steady on Morwen's scarred face. The hybrid woman was taller than she'd expected, her frame lean and muscular, her eyes holding a cold fire that spoke of years of bitterness and pain."You talk about choices," Morwen said, her voice dripping with contempt. "But you've never had to make the choices I've made. You've never had to watch your family starve while your leaders feast. You've never had to choose between loyalty and survival."Elara felt the words strike deep, but she didn't flinch. "You're right. I haven't experienced what you've experienced. But I've known hunger. I've known fear. I've known what it's like to have every choice taken away from you."Morwen laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. "You? The Luna of the Northern Valley? You've known nothing but privilege your entire life.""Is that what you think?" Elara took

  • THE REJECTED BARREN LUNA REVENGE    The Unraveling Thread

The first sign that something was wrong came on a crisp autumn morning. Elara was in the garden, her hands buried in the soil as she prepared the beds for winter planting. Mira was playing nearby, her laughter carrying across the yard as she chased a butterfly through the dying flowers. Then she heard it—the sound of a horse approaching at full gallop. The hoofbeats were urgent, desperate, and they sent a chill down her spine that had nothing to do with the cooling air.She rose to her feet, brushing the dirt from her hands. Mira had stopped playing, her dark eyes fixed on the rider who was now dismounting at the edge of the property. It was a young hybrid she recognized from the capital—one of Voss's messengers."My lady," the messenger gasped, clearly out of breath. "I bring word from the capital. You're needed urgently."Elara felt her heart clench. "What's happened?""It's the eastern territories, my lady. The packs that defected from Tom's army—some of them are resisting integrat

  • THE REJECTED BARREN LUNA REVENGE    The House by the Lake

The land by the lake had been untouched for years, overgrown with wild grass and tangled vines that crept up from the water's edge. But Elara could see it clearly—the house she had dreamed of, the home she wanted to build for her family. She stood at the water's edge, Mira on her hip, and let her imagination paint the future across the empty canvas before her."It's perfect," she murmured, more to herself than to anyone else.Kael came up behind her, his arms wrapping around both her and their daughter. "It's a mess," he said with a laugh. "There's not even a path to the water. We'll have to clear everything ourselves.""I know. That's what makes it perfect. We'll build it with our own hands. Every stone, every beam, every nail. It will be ours in a way nothing else has ever been."He pressed a kiss to her temple. "You're impossible, you know that?""You love me anyway.""I do." He nuzzled her hair. "I really, truly do."They spent the next few weeks clearing the land. Kael recruited
