FAZER LOGINAstrid’s Pov
It’s been four days.
Four long, brutal days since they dragged me into this nightmare. Every hour feels like another twist of the knife, carving deeper into my soul. The walls of this castle seem to breathe violence and blood. And me? I’m just a human girl caught in the middle of it all, trying not to drown.
No one here sees me as a person. I’m nothing more than a stain. A mistake that should have been wiped away the moment I arrived. Even the other servants, who know what it’s like to suffer, treat me like a stray dog that wandered into a palace full of wolves wearing crowns. They shove me, mock me, and laugh when I flinch. I never fight back. I can’t. Not if I want to stay alive.
Some days I wonder if dying would be the only way to finally speak with my own voice again.
Every morning they send me to clean Luna Aliyah’s chambers, her private sanctuary of fragile, expensive things. She collects delicate ceramic ornaments, glass swans, crystal vases, and gilded mirrors. I think she loves them because they’re so easy to break. Just like me.
Today my head was pounding and my vision kept blurring. The bruises on my arms throbbed with every movement. I tried so hard to be careful, but my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. When I picked up her favorite vase, it slipped through my fingers.
The crash echoed like thunder.
“No, no, no…” I whispered, dropping to my knees. I tried desperately to gather the pieces, but a sharp edge sliced deep into my palm. Blood smeared across the white rug like evidence of my crime.
Then I heard her voice.
“You dare break one of my possessions?”
I froze.
Luna Aliyah stood in the doorway, arms crossed, her eyes burning with pure contempt.
“Stand. Up.”
I staggered to my feet, legs trembling. “I-I’m sorry, Luna. I didn’t mean to. I wasn’t feeling well.”
“Who gave you permission to feel unwell?” she snapped, stepping closer. “Follow me. Now.”
Her gaze promised pain. “And don’t you dare say another word, or I’ll make sure you don’t live to see sundown.”
I followed her down the endless corridor, my legs heavy as lead. We stepped out into the sunlit courtyard, the heat beating down on us mercilessly.
“Go stand in the center,” she ordered.
I walked forward on numb legs until I reached the middle of the courtyard. Two massive warriors waited there. Luna Aliyah whispered something to them, and they turned toward me like hungry predators.
This was it.
They grabbed my wrists and tied me to the whipping post. The first lash tore across my back like liquid fire. I screamed. Another came, and another. My knees buckled, but the ropes held me in place. I begged until my throat was raw, but they didn’t stop. The world blurred with pain.
Then a voice cut through the agony.
“That’s enough.”
Everything went silent.
The warriors stepped back. Through swollen eyes, I saw him.
Alpha Xavier.
He strode forward, his presence alone making the others retreat. Luna Aliyah stormed toward him, furious, and they exchanged heated words in low voices. She looked livid. He remained calm.
He walked up to me and gently untied the ropes. The moment I was free, my legs gave out and I collapsed into the dirt.
Then chaos erupted.
Screams filled the air. Wolves howled. Shouts rang out everywhere. Someone tossed weapons to Xavier. In a heartbeat, he shifted into a massive black wolf, all fury and power, and charged into battle. Aliyah shifted too, snarling as she followed him.
The courtyard turned into a battlefield.
I was alone, bleeding and broken. Somehow I managed to drag myself back inside the castle, crawling through the panic. Most doors were locked. I sobbed in frustration, leaving a trail of blood behind me, until one door finally creaked open.
I slipped inside without thinking and collapsed in a dark corner, shaking.
I don’t know how long I stayed there, curled up against the cold stone. My back burned with every breath. The sounds of battle outside made my heart race, but nothing came near the room.
Until the door opened again.
I stopped breathing.
Footsteps. Two sets.
I recognized them instantly.
Alpha Xavier and Luna Aliyah.
I peeked out from the shadows, careful not to make a sound. Aliyah was injured, blood streaking her arm and thigh, her perfect hair a tangled mess. But Xavier… he looked terrible.
His chest was slashed open, a deep, ugly wound still bleeding heavily. His breathing was wet and shallow. For the first time, the terrifying Alpha King looked painfully mortal.
“I told you,” Aliyah hissed, helping him to the bed. “I warned you not to charge in like that. This is your fault.”
Xavier didn’t answer. His face was pale, eyes half-closed.
Aliyah leaned over him for a moment, then straightened. Her voice turned cold.
“I’m sorry, but I have to save myself. You’ll probably die anyway. I’ve done all I can.”
She turned and walked out without another glance, slamming the door behind her.
She left him to die.
I stayed pressed against the wall, heart aching at what I had just witnessed. This was the man who had spared me twice. Once from execution, and today from Aliyah’s whip. He didn’t owe me anything, yet he had protected me.
And now he was lying there, bleeding out. Alone.
I knew I should stay hidden. I was nothing here.
But my body moved anyway.
Even though fire ripped through my back with every motion, I crawled out of the shadows and pulled myself up beside the bed. He looked almost peaceful now, his powerful face softened by pain.
Maybe it was my turn to help him.
“This is stupid,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “You’re going to get yourself killed.”
Still, I leaned down. His neck was right there, pulse weak beneath torn skin.
I opened my mouth.
And my fangs dropped.
The shock nearly made me pull back. I had never felt them before. But there was no time to question it.
I sank my fangs into his neck.
His blood flooded my mouth, hot and powerful. The moment it touched my tongue, something inside me exploded. Fire surged through my veins, burning away everything I thought I knew about myself.
Then his body jerked violently.
A choked gasp tore from his throat.
His hand shot out and gripped my arm with surprising strength.
I froze.
His eyes flew open, glowing with intensity, locked directly onto mine.
Xavier’s Pov I stood there with my fingers still cupping Astrid’s chin. Her skin was warm and incredibly soft beneath my rough hand, like the finest silk warmed by the sun. I could feel the slight tremble in her jaw as she looked up at me. Her eyes were wide and uncertain, but there was something else in them too. Something that made my blood run hotter. I was glad nobody had touched her. If they had, the rage inside me would have been uncontrollable. I did not even understand where that rage came from. Why did the thought of anyone else laying a finger on her make me want to tear the world apart? Maybe it was because she had saved my life once. Maybe it was because she was mine now. Whatever it was, it burned deep.I slowly pulled my hand away. My fingers brushed along her jaw one last time, lingering just a second longer than necessary. Then I turned and walked back to my chair. The heavy wood creaked loudly as I sat down. Astrid remained standing in front of me. She looked so smal
Astrid’s PovWe stepped into the room and it felt strangely quiet. The space was small but clean. There was only one bed. I did not know what to do so I sat at the very edge of the bed feeling awkward. Talon stood near the door for a moment before he spoke.“So what is going to happen to your makeup? Are you going to sleep with it on?”I touched my face lightly. “I will take a bath and wipe it off. But this long wedding dress is very uncomfortable. If I had something sharp I could cut it shorter to make it easier to sleep in.”Talon nodded. “You know what? When you remove the dress keep it on top of the bed. Tell me the length you want me to cut it. When you finish bathing it will be ready for you to wear.”I looked at him with surprise. “Oh thank you so much. I did not know your claws were that sharp for clothes.”Talon gave a small smile. “If my claws are sharp for people what is cloth that it cannot cut?”I felt a little stupid for asking the question. We stared at each other for a
Astrid’s PovIf someone had told me that I would be getting married to the ugliest man in the world I would never have believed it. Not even for one second. I had always dreamed about my wedding day. I imagined wearing a beautiful white dress with flowers in my hair. I imagined smiling because I was happy. But here I was standing in front of a cracked mirror looking at myself in a dress that was not mine. I looked beautiful on the outside but inside I felt completely empty. Two ladies I did not even know were helping me get ready. One was kind and quiet. The other had a mean face and kept sighing like I was wasting her time. I turned to the kind one with tears in my eyes.“Please I cannot do this,” I whispered. She gave me a small sad smile. “My child you have to. We have no option. This is what we do to survive.”I tried again. “I cannot do this. I still have so much to live for. I cannot stay with this man please.”The mean one snapped at me. “Hey girl do not spoil the makeup we wor
Xavier’s PovI stared at Aliyah like I had not heard her correctly. My mind refused to accept the words. Maybe I heard wrong. Maybe she said something else. This could not be real.“I did not get you,” I said slowly. “Come again.”Aliyah continued eating her food calmly like she had not just said something crazy. She took another bite and chewed slowly.I felt my blood start to boil. I raised my voice. “I asked you a question Aliyah. What did you just say?”She finally dropped her fork and looked up at me. “Oh come on Xavier. I sold her. She was of no use to me anymore. So I sold her to some traders on her way to get married to an elder somewhere far away.”My hands clenched into fists. “You would not dare.”Aliyah stood up slowly. “What do you mean I would not dare? She is just a lowly servant. Since when did you start caring so much about servants and what I do with them? You wanted a personal maid. I gave you a new one. She was always making mistakes anyway. It was out of my genero
Xavier’s PovThe journey back to Volkarion felt longer than the actual war itself. My horse moved steadily but my mind was somewhere else completely. I kept thinking about seeing Astrid again. Just the thought of her face made something warm spread through my chest. I remembered her soft eyes. I remembered her gentle voice. Most of all I remembered her beautiful hair. It looked like she used some kind of magic potion on it. The kind vampires take so they can walk in the sun without burning. Her hair was always so gorgeous. It shone even in the dark. I could not stop thinking about running my fingers through it.Talon and Caden were talking beside me. They discussed the short battle and how easy the victory was. I heard their voices but the words did not enter my head. I was too busy imagining Astrid smile. I wondered if she missed me even a little. I wondered if she still wore my coat again.Suddenly Talon raised his voice. “Xavier. Xavier.”I turned my head slowly. “Yes?”He studied
Astrid’s PovI started hearing muffled sounds. People were talking in low voices. There were whispers and murmurs all around me. At first I thought it was a dream. But the sounds felt too real. I tried to open my eyes slowly. Something felt wrong. The surface under me was hard and uncomfortable. I remembered falling asleep on a very soft mattress in Luna Aliyah room. Why was this place so hard? When I finally opened my eyes everything was dark. Very dark. I could only see tiny spaces of light through small gaps. I was inside something tight and closed. A box. I was trapped in a box. My chest became tight. I have always been afraid of small spaces. I have always been afraid of the dark. Who would not be afraid of the dark in a situation like this? That was when I heard Luna Aliyah voice clearly. She was talking to some men outside.“Do not bring her back. I need her soul. The price is fair. Even if it is for free I will give her to you.”One of the men laughed loudly. “Looks like this

Astrid’s PovHis eyes met mine, they were sharp, red, and impossible to read. Then, just as suddenly, they closed again. He collapsed back onto the bed, unconscious. That was my sign to leave. He probably wouldn’t remember any of it. It might have just been a momentary surge of energy. Either way,
Astrid’s PovWith trembling lashes, I slowly cracked my eyes open, unsure and terrified. And there he was.He stood tall at the top of the stairs, his presence commanding absolute silence. Power rolled off him in waves, heavy and suffocating, like heat rising from a wildfire. His dark eyes met mine
Astrid’s PovPlease, please, please stop. Please, I don’t want to die. Please, I beg of you, don’t do this. The voice was mine, but I didn’t recognize it.
