Chapter 1

Serena Jensen paled instantly. She trembled as she took out her phone.

The screen saver that had always been a photo of me had been replaced by a wedding photo of her and Myles Sheldon.

After she pressed the call button, a melodious ringtone came from my pocket.

I playfully answered Myles' blood-covered phone. "Hello? Darling, why did you not come to save me? I am so scared..."

Serena grabbed my collar forcefully. "What did you do to Myles?"

Just when I was about to suffocate, the deputy captain, Frederick Gills, rushed over and pulled us apart. "Captain Jensen, calm down! This is a live interrogation!"

Serena gritted her teeth and asked me, "Where is Myles?"

I spread my hands, and the handcuffs clinked. "I do not know. Since you can catch me, I believe you can also find him."

"Channing Jones!" Serena's eyes were so red that they almost seemed to bleed.

"Myles considered you his best friend. When you were bullied as a child, he defended you. Your father was ill and needed to be hospitalized, it was him who arranged a ward and took care of him every day. He did more than you did. Even when you could not gather the medical fees, he took out his savings to help you. Is this how you repaid Myles?"

The giant livestream screen at the side was flooded with comments racing across the display.

[Gosh, could it be Dr. Myles Sheldon from Citizen Hospital?]

[I remember him! He is such a kind soul. When my dad was seriously ill and I could not afford the medication, Dr. Sheldon secretly spent his own money on countless medications for me.]

[Good people die young! This damned murderer must be severely punished!]

Faced with those accusations, I scoffed and turned my head away, unbothered to look anymore.

Serena was enraged by my reaction. She took the lucky charm off Myles' phone charm and slammed it down in front of me.

"Myles only spoke with me a little more often because of your father's condition, yet you became suspicious and paranoid, insisting that Myles had deliberately seduced me. You even stabbed him!

"I detained you as part of an official investigation, but Myles pitied you and personally wrote a letter of forgiveness to release you. Yet you disappeared without a trace! Myles was so worried about you that he could not eat. Myles took great efforts to get you this lucky charm. He prayed for your safety every day, but you killed four people, including him!"

Serena's voice was hoarse, and her eyes were filled with a hatred that seemed to want to tear me to pieces.

"Do you know that your father was already dying while you were in custody?

"Myles endured a knife wound to try and save your father. It was a 12-hour surgery, yet he did not drink a drop of water. Your father did not make it, and Myles broke down crying, even insisting on handling your father's funeral arrangements himself. He said it was all his fault, and he took leave every year to visit your father's grave on his death anniversary. He did so much for you, but this is how you repaid him!"

My eyes welled up with tears at the mention of my father.

When Serena saw my change in emotion, she softened her tone. The hand that had once shyly accepted my engagement ring while she smiled now rested on my shoulder. "Channing, where did you hide Myles? If you sincerely repent, I can try to get you leniency."

I looked up, smiling through my tears. "Leniency? Serena, you traitorous piece of trash; what right do you have to offer me leniency?"

During her imprisonment, Serena visited me every month. She relocated my father's grave and planted a small pine tree beside it. Every month, apart from the fresh news from the outside world, she brought me a branch of pine."Channing, behave well. I am waiting for you outside."I did not want her to waste her time on me and avoided seeing her for several consecutive months. She chose to write to me instead. Occasionally, her letter contained our old photos. When I looked at our innocent smiles in the photo, I still could not help feeling emotional.Serena wrote a caption beside the photo.[Channing, our lives have just happened to take a detour. Give me a chance to correct it and bring us back on the right track, okay? Even if this detour is long and will take a lifetime to correct it, I am willing to do it.]I stroked our two smiling faces in the photo and eventually did not refuse.Life in prison was simple. I chose to learn a skill.Due to my good performance, I received

When I came to my senses, I had already clutched the monster's neck. The next second, a tremendous force toppled me, making me slam onto the ground. Violent slaps were then delivered to my face one after another."Channing, what possible options do you have? Did you not do what you considered criminal for your own selfish desires? Go find your police officer girlfriend. Turn yourself in and beg for forgiveness."I was knocked unconscious. The next three years were like hell on earth. Because I refused to follow their assigned tasks, I received a beating every day. All the dirty deeds they had done were also pinned on me.Even if I returned home, I could not escape imprisonment.Myles even called me. "Channing, you cannot go back anyway; how about submitting to us? Your father is dead, and Serena has married me. What do you have to hold on to? Life goes on. Why do you have to trouble yourself?"I just replied, "Myles, karma is always a b*tch."Fate did not keep me waiting for lon

Myles was too forceful, and his bandaged abdomen immediately started bleeding again.Serena immediately rang the emergency call bell. The doctor arrived quickly.Amidst the chaos, Serena handcuffed my wrists. "Channing, have you not hurt Myles enough? Now you even came to the hospital to threaten him? Myles was so kind to you. How could you do such a thing?"I immediately burst into tears, but my throat felt like it was being squeezed, and not a single word could come out. I could only shake my head helplessly.Myles' injury assessment report was quickly released.Because he avoided all the vital organs, he was fine. Now, Serena took out this assessment report again. Trembling, she asked, "Channing, you have no medical knowledge; how could you avoid all the vital organs? It was not you who stabbed Myles. It was Myles who held your hand and stabbed himself, right?"As soon as she said that, the livestream comment section was instantly in an uproar.[What a plot twist. Why did D

I looked at Myles in disbelief. "This is the woman in bed 15. She was not seriously ill at all and was chatting with my dad last night. The nurse who did the rounds before bedtime asked her if she wanted to sign the organ donation agreement. She did not want to sign at first, but she was superstitious and thought that signing it might help her get better. She ended up passing away this morning. Myles, was it you..."Seeing the familiar face turn pale, my eyes instantly reddened.Myles sighed. "Channing, I have been so kind to you. Why do you think so badly of me? She signed the agreement voluntarily. I merely took her organs according to her wishes and made some profit from them. She alone could have saved at least five lives, and I am the savior of the other five people."I interrupted him sharply. "But you killed her. You killed a living person. You committed murder; it is a crime."Myles raised his hands in a surrendering gesture innocently. "But it was all their own choice. She

The next time I saw Serena was in the meeting room.Through the glass, she looked even more haggard than I was, who was about to be executed the next day."Channing, it is my fault." Serena's hand holding the phone was shaking. "I will find a lawyer for you right away. How about you appeal to the court?"I shook my head with a smile. "What is the point in talking about this now? I am still going to die eventually."Perhaps the word "die" triggered her. Serena shook her head wildly. "No. It is different, Channing. It is different. Why did I not notice earlier? If I had noticed earlier, would things not have turned out this way?"Serena sobbed uncontrollably, like a child. "Channing, I am truly trash that betrayed you. Everything is my fault. I will not let this end like this. Channing, I will make this right."The meeting time was up. Serena put down the receiver and staggered out.The next day, I was not taken to the execution ground; instead, I was sent back to the interrogatio
