ILYANA’S POV.
Tonight would be my eighth rejection. And my last. The full moon glowed over Bridgesaw Hall, and every wolf buzzed with excitement. It was the annual full moon ritual, and all wolves from every pack gathered in the vast hall to find their fated mate. For them, it was exciting and something to look forward to. For me, it was hell—my curse, since every one of my past mates was present and always ready to pounce on me. “If it isn’t the witch. Come to embarrass yourself further tonight?” Lady Selene’s voice bounced through the hall as she walked towards me, a champagne flute in her hand. Lady Selene was the mate of Alpha Theo, and my worst nemesis. One would think that because she’s a Luna and higher than me, she wouldn’t mix with the likes of me, but no. She hated my gut. “Didn’t I tell you not to show your face in this ritual last year?” Everyone was already looking, their faces eager for the embarrassment that was soon to come for me. I gulped, scared and embarrassed. I hate this, hate how she singles me out every time, “I tried not to, Lady Selene… but… I’m an unmarked wolf… I can’t…” The words had not left my mouth when a hot slap rang in my ears, the pain registering afterward. Hot tears burned at the back of my eyes, threatening to spill, but I held them in. I will not cry. Not here. Not for them. “Unmarked wolf?” she scoffed. “You’re not an unmarked wolf, Ilyana. You’re a plague. A witch. Isn’t that why your mates have been rejecting you?” she sneered. “Seven mating rituals and not one acceptance. Thrown out of one pack to another every time, all because of your curse. You’re a disgrace.” She spat at me. And they agreed. I heard the chuckles around me, and my heart clenched bitterly in my chest. I balled my fist, embarrassment churning with anger inside of me. I was sixteen when I attended my first mating ritual, excited like every other omega—until I found out my mate was the alpha of my pack. An omega turning to be the mate of an alpha, it was unheard of and also a symbol of bad luck for the alpha. He didn’t even think twice. He rejected me. Cast me out of his pack. I was sad, but young and naive, hopeful of a life with my fated mate. What was one rejection? So I moved to another pack and settled. Then the second full moon, another alpha, from the pack that took me in. Rejected. Cast out again. Third time—another alpha. That was when they started calling me cursed. No one wanted me in their pack. No one wanted the curse of mating an omega. Then came Alpha Theo. He embarrassed me, then cast me out. And then Selene. In the fifth ritual, she was Alpha Theo’s second chance mate, and ever since then, she has been on my neck every single year—insulting me, harassing me, making me the brunt of every joke. “Which alpha do you want tonight? Ryan? Th—” “Don’t even associate me with that disgrace, Selene. I’d rather die than be mated to an omega like her,” Alpha Ryan replied scornfully. She grabbed my jaw, her fingernails digging into it with a glare that could kill, “You’re a stain to every werewolf. Why have we even kept you alive this long? What if your curse spreads and contaminates every other omega and you start giving them ideas?” Whispers surged around us, and her eyes shone with wickedness. “What if every omega starts mating to alphas because of you? We should kill her.” The room went silent at once. She released me, turning to the alphas. “If after tonight she’s mated to another alpha, we’ll fully know she’s a witch. She has done something and would continue to cause issues. We should begin the ritual now, kill her, and get rid of her once and for all.” My wolf, Elara, gnawed inside of me, scared and restless at the same time. No… this cannot be. This can’t be right. It was not my fault that the moon goddess mated me to alphas every single time. I’ve asked, cried, done everything to make her break it, to mate me to someone else—but it was always one alpha after the other. “I agree. An omega like her should not be allowed to live,” Alpha Theo added. “Yes, I agree,” another said. “Yes. What if I’m her mate tonight?” An alpha said, “Let’s kill her. Make an example to every other omega so they won’t try whatever charm she did.” Alpha Liam added. Every one of them agreed. Not one—not a single one of my past mates—even disagreed. No one spoke up for me, not even the omegas. They looked fine with it, ready to get rid of the omega stain that was me. Lady Selene turned back, a smirk on her face like she had won. “Let the ritual begin then!” Suddenly, a beautiful scent hit my nose, and my wolf sprang inside of me, purring excitedly while dread filled me. “Mate! Mate! Our mate is here!” Elara howled Fear sank deep. No. No. This cannot be. The ritual has not even started yet. It was unheard of for one to find their mate without the mating ritual. What… What is happening? And why me? I moved towards the source, unable to hold myself, even though I wanted to. The sound of cars filled the air and three cars stopped in front of the hall, grabbing everyone’s attention. Only the alphas were allowed to park their cars in front of the hall before entering—and they were already here. Who would dare park in front of the hall? A car door opened, and a guard walked out to the first door, opening it with a bow as a leg stepped out. My wolf purred more as the smell got stronger and more delicious. He was near. My mate. My eighth rejection and death was near. A man stepped out of the car, and the entire hall gasped together. My stomach sank. This could not be. The wolf head on his chest gave him away, and everyone immediately knew. The Alpha King, Kael Stormveil, was here. Whispers filled the air instantly. “That cannot be…” “Really… the Alpha King…” “Why is he here?” But the murmurs and whispers were nothing in my ears. Because from the moment the Alpha King stepped out, his eyes were on mine, as if he knew. As if he was feeling the same thing that was tugging at my stomach. The same feeling that would be my death. His eyes didn’t leave mine as he walked towards me. Everyone parted for him, still whispering and wondering, as he stopped in front of me. The words left his mouth before they could leave mine. “Mate,”ILYANA’S POVFor a minute, it felt like the world had stopped, leaving just Kael and I in it.“What?” I asked, wide-eyed and shocked. He didn’t falter, “Marry me. Be my wife.” he repeated. My mind was at a loss for words, spinning with nothing. How? Why? I frowned, not understanding, unable to comprehend.“I know it might come as a shock to you, and I don’t know when all of it started happening. But I can’t afford to lose you, not now or ever. I want to marry you and call you my wife, and invite every alpha to see that you now belong to me and I belong to you. Something has shifted, Ilyana. And I want it with you.”“Stay with me. Not just as my mate or as a breeder.” he said, and tears formed in my eyes from the warmth in his voice, “Not just as my Luna for the pack, but as my wife. Mine alone.”A happy sob tore out of me and I threw myself into his arms immediately. His words were beautiful, always too dreamlike, making it feel like they were not meant for me.“Yes,” I said, “Yes, I’
KAEL’S POVIlyana shook with terror as I carried her from the chair and set her on a sofa, patting her and making sure she was not alone. My wolf growled inside of me, angry and fuming at having put her in this situation.“What are you—” Maeve asked, but I snapped at her, “Do not even do anything right now.”I turned back to Ilyana who looked like she was now getting her senses back.“Ilyana, are you alright?”She didn’t answer, just staring directly at the priestess, her eyes wide and not blinking. She didn’t move, not a damn inch, as she just kept staring past me at the priestess.“Ilyana, talk to me.” I said, my voice getting sterner. I leaned forward and placed a kiss on her temple, but her eyes didn’t even budge towards me. Anger rose inside me as I blocked her line of vision, but her eyes were still not focusing on me.“Ilyana!” I snapped, using my alpha voice, and she immediately blinked in fear, jumping a little away from me as my heart recoiled. I hated this. I don’t ever wan
ILYANA’S POVI had no plans on leaving Atasha if I saw her in the dream, but I knew Kael was worried and I understood him. We were both important to him, and he was already planning on the outcome. But there was no outcome for me, Atasha cannot die. She’s my friend. My last living friend. And I’ll do whatever it takes to save her.For a while, I didn’t feel anything happening. The priestess’ grip on my hand was tight, and I held Atasha’s strongly but nothing was happening. Maeve was chanting something, her white orbs on mine. Something was off about her, about all of this, about the excitement I could feel coming from her but I put that all aside.Atasha was the priority. And if this would save her, then I’ll do it a hundred times if I have to.Suddenly Maeve’s chanting took a heavy turn, louder and faster, yet nothing happened.I didn’t want to ask but I opened my mouth only for someone to beat me to it.“Are you sure this is right? Nothing is happening,” Ryder said.Maeve did not an
KAEL’S POV“And is there any danger in this ritual?” I asked the priestess and she turned to me, “Not too much, Alpha. And even if there is, I’m sure your mate can handle it.”I growled inwardly, my body and self not fine with the idea of putting Ilyana through anything dangerous and most especially in the hands of the woman who knows that I have to lose her to prevent an upcoming war.“Is there no other solution besides this?”“No other that can wake the girl up as quick as this can. If we decide to try any other thing, I’m not sure she’ll still be alive by the time we’re done.”I clenched my jaw, my head and mind spinning.“I’m not putting her through this. We can find another way. Think, do anything, but not Ilyana,” I snapped at her.Ilyana faced me, “It’s fine, Kael. I’ll be fine, but we have to do this. For Atasha’s sake.”“No, you don’t have to,” I said gently, “We have the doctors, the priestess. I’m sure once they put their heads together, they can arrive at something other t
ILYANA’S POV“No,” the word left Kael’s mouth before it could even leave mine.I didn’t like the priestess, and the last thing I wanted was for her to get her hands on Atasha in any way at all. “Go in, do your jobs, wake my sister, by any means possible,” Kael said, his tone final, leaving no space for argument as the doctors rushed back inside.Carius sighed heavily, like he wanted to say something, but Ryder beat him to it, “What if we just call her to be sure? There’s no harm in trying.”“I agree with him,” Carius added.“I don’t want that woman touching Atasha.”“She’s not going to do anything to her, Kael. We’re all here. What would be the harm in trying?” Carius argued, “If you don’t know, there’s nothing Louise and the rest can do. It’s evident on their face. They’ve not seen this before.”“And what if there’s no priestess, would Atasha die?”“But there is one,” Carius shot back, eyeing Kael, “The point is to save Atasha, not let her die. Or don’t you agree, Ilyana?”They all t
ILYANA’S POVWe rushed from the packhouse to Atasha’s home, and the scene before us was scarier than Ryder had described. She was on her bed, shaking violently, but she wouldn’t wake up no matter how much anyone called her.“Get the pack doctor now,” Kael ordered, and Ryder bowed, leaving the room.I tried to shake her awake, “Atasha! Wake up! Wake up! It’s just a bad dream. Wake up!” But no matter what I said, it just got more violent, her body pulsing on and off on the bed. One minute she was shaking, the next she was lying so still, like she was just sleeping. The pack doctor arrived, all three of them, and ushered everyone out of the room. Kael was pacing back and forth. Carius just stood there, his expression unreadable, and Ryder was biting his nails.“Walk me through the incident before this happened,” Kael turned to Ryder, his expression cold and icy.He was back to his normal self, “We were together all evening, just joking and playing around…”My eyebrow lifted at playing ar
ILYANA’S POVI was outside of the pack house, ready to leave with both Misha and Tina, when we saw someone running towards us, yelling for us to wait.“Is that the beta?” Tina was the first to notice.I squinted, trying to see clearly, and recognized Carius running towards us. He was panting heavil
KAEL.The room fell into hushed silence the minute I stepped inside, each of the alphas from their packs finally present and seated. Their eyes shone with eagerness and anticipation, watching like hawks and assessing me as I walked to my chair and took my seat. I let my eyes drag through every one
ILYANA.His lips crashed into mine and I didn’t know what to do with my hands. That was the first thing. The embarrassing, humiliating first thing, that he kissed me like he’d been starving and I stood there with my arms at my sides for a full second before my brain caught up and I grabbed his shir
KAEL’S POV.“She’s lucky,” Atasha said as she inspected the wound, cleaning it and wrapping the last bandage around it.“Really?” Lucienne said, both of them looking at each other sourly, only for Atasha to turn to me, “The wound was not as deep as expected, but her body started healing the moment
