Chapter 4

Author: Mohini
My heart seized in my chest.

Looking up, I saw Madeline's expression grow increasingly smug. Surrounded by the disdainful stares of the crowd, I stumbled toward her, my eyes bloodshot.

"She is the only family I have left. Don't you dare touch her!"

I couldn't stop my voice from cracking, and my body was shaking.

The crowd began murmuring.

Embarrassed, Nathaniel shoved me away with all his might.

"Caroline, enough is enough!" he thundered.

I crashed into the champagne tower, and the shards of glass cut into my skin.

Nathaniel instinctively took a step toward me, but Madeline reached me first, leaning down as if to help.

"You really are clever, Caroline," she whispered. "You figured out right away that I took her. But why don't you try guessing what I have planned for her?"

Panic flooded my mind.

Before I knew it, I had already seized her by the throat. "I won't let you hurt her!"

In the next second, a massive force threw me back, followed by a sharp slap to my face.

"Caroline, I've been incredibly patient with you. What exactly did Madeline do to you? Look at yourself. You're acting completely unhinged!"

I could see myself in Nathaniel's eyes—deranged and pathetic.

But my mind was consumed by the thought of Rebecca's safety.

All of a sudden, I snatched up a nearby knife and charged toward Madeline.

"Nate, save me!" Madeline cried.

Nathaniel threw himself in front of her, taking the blow in his back.

He whirled around and furiously ordered the security guards, "She's lost it! Hold her down and make her apologize for what she's done. Maybe that will clear her head!"

I was forced down and slapped repeatedly.

But when I managed to lift my eyes, I saw Madeline smugly waving her phone at me.

The orphanage where I grew up was engulfed in flames, and the sound of Rebecca's desperate cries for help echoed from the device.

Panic consumed me.

"Let me go! Nathaniel, please! Just let me out of here!"

I tried to break free, but Nathaniel caught me in his arms.

"Don't even think about leaving through that door until you've learned your lesson!"

Nothing else mattered anymore. I dropped back down and slapped myself hard, my vision blurring.

My eyes swept across the room, burning with resentment.

A flicker of shock crossed Nathaniel's eyes, and he instinctively reached down to pull me up.

But I flung him off with all my strength, then turned and ran out of the gala without looking back.

Nathaniel stared after me, an inexplicable weight settling over his chest.

By the time I arrived at the orphanage, the fire had already spread through the entire attic.

I rushed inside, my hands shaking as I frantically worked to untie the ropes binding Rebecca. But she looked up and gave me a faint smile before taking her final breath.

I froze where I stood.

In that instant, it felt as if my heart had stopped.

Then, a deafening explosion suddenly ripped through the air, and everything went black.

Meanwhile, Nathaniel, acting as the primary donor for the charity gala, arrived at the orphanage flanked by a crowd of reporters.

But the moment he pushed his car door open, the sight of the flames lighting up the sky froze him in his tracks.

A collective gasp rippled through the surrounding guests.Nathaniel's hand froze in mid-air, the corners of his mouth twitching. "Caroline, what are you talking about? I've been looking for you these past few days. I've been out of my mind with worry, so what is the meaning of this?I handed him my copy of the divorce agreement, his own signature clearly visible on the line.Nathaniel obviously recognized his handwriting, because he drew in a heavy breath."I signed that without knowing what it was. I thought you were just messing with me. Why are you taking it seriously?" he questioned.A bitter laugh escaped my lips.He had forced me to take the blame in front of everyone for Madeline's sake, and he had stood by while she hurt the woman who raised me.From that moment on, he was no longer fit to be my husband."Do I look like I'm joking?" I asked. "Nathaniel, whether you knew what you were signing or not, I've made up my mind to divorce you. That isn't going to change."Na

He had grown up in the orphanage with me, sharing a bond with Rebecca that ran deeper than blood. We held each other and cried, but even then, he didn't forget to comfort me."Caroline, this isn't your fault," he said. "They did this, not you."By the time I was discharged from the hospital, Simon had already contacted the staff and collected Rebecca's remains.Together, we laid her to rest at the cemetery.I placed a bouquet of sunflowers, her favorite flowers, beside her headstone, my eyes red."Help me," I whispered. "I want to make Madeline pay for this."Simon used his connections to hand over every piece of evidence to the police. The moment I saw the surveillance footage, my heart completely shattered.Madeline and her men had

"W-What did you just say?"Without waiting for an answer, Nathaniel stumbled blindly back toward the scene of the fire. When he arrived, a charred body had already been pulled out."W-Who is this? Is it my wife? There's no way this is my wife, right?"A member of the recovery team quickly clarified, "No. We've already run a check on the victim's DNA. The deceased is a woman named Ms. Rebecca Langford."It was the director of the orphanage.Even then, the tension in Nathaniel's chest didn't loosen for a second."How did she die in the fire? She was supposed to be at the hospital. I personally arranged her heart transplant surgery."The moment I had agreed to apologize at the gala, he had contacted the donor to move forward with the operation. So, what was Rebecca doing here?"She was kidnapped and brought here," said the recovery personnel. "We've already verified the kidnapping with the hospital, and we're still actively investigating who kidnapped her. Based on our prelimina

There's a massive fire!"The crowd dissolved into chaos, people scattering in every direction as the flames roared higher, waves of intense heat rolling toward them.Nathaniel stared at the scene before him, a sudden wave of panic hitting him as my face flashed through his mind."Where's Caroline?" he asked. "Does she know the orphanage is on fire?"His assistant, Rowan Ashford, frantically dialed my number, only to shake his head. "Mr. Cross, she isn't picking up." "But this place is out in the middle of nowhere," Rowan added quickly. "The kids left for school hours ago and aren't back yet. The building should be empty."Hearing that, Nathaniel finally breathed a sigh of relief. "Get the fire department out here immediately to put it out. Save whatever you can."Just as he was about to try calling me himself, Madeline quietly reached out and grabbed his hand."Nate, do you think Mrs. Cross started the fire herself? She knew we were scheduled to visit

The metallic taste of blood instantly bloomed in my mouth.Nathaniel held up his hand, which was visibly shaking, a fleeting look of guilt crossing his eyes."How dare you put your hands on Madeline? That woman started this by running her mouth. Is this how you were raised?"I blinked away my tears, unable to believe the words coming out of his mouth.Everyone loved to look down on orphans, treating us like wild, uncultured animals raised with zero manners.Years ago, he had been the one to smash a liquor bottle across a counter to shut up anyone who dared to mock me.When he saw my eyes pool with tears, a flicker of heartache crossed Nathaniel's features. But Madeline threw herself into his chest, trembling. "Nate, if you hadn't gotten here right when you did, the two of them would've teamed up on me…"Nathaniel pictured a vivid image of Madeline being brutally attacked, disgust coloring his gaze."Tomorrow night, you're going to publicly apologize to Madeline at the charity
