Evander carefully laid Elena’s small body onto the bed, gently tucking her in so as not to wake the woman who had cried herself to sleep.

“I’m still wondering, what is my real job here? Being a bodyguard or a babysitter,” he whispered, a hint of exasperation in his voice.

Before leaving, Evander gazed at Elena's face one last time, staring for a long moment. “Beautiful,” he praised, almost inaudibly.

This was the young lady from the Montgomery Family, Elena Montgomery, the one who always filled him with regret, the one he always wanted to apologize to whenever he was near her.

“I promise you, when you wake up, all this sadness will be gone. I won’t let you suffer, Miss.”

“This will be the last time you cry.”

Even if it meant Evander had to bear everything himself, for Elena and her happiness, he would do it.

Unwilling to linger and cause misunderstandings when she awoke, the man in the black uniform decided to leave, allowing Elena to rest comfortably.

His feet carried him to his favorite room, the place where he unleashed his loneliness.

Whenever his mind was troubled or unsettled, Evander usually spent his time practicing target shooting.

In this way, he felt a little calmer, able to momentarily forget the problems that plagued his soul.

“I’m sorry, Elena. I had no choice but to say it, to hurt your heart by rejecting you. I didn’t want to endanger you, let alone complicate your future life.”

Bang!

Shot after shot was fired.

“I love you, and that doesn’t mean I don’t want to fight for these feelings further. It’s just that.”

Evander had never felt such powerlessness in his life, he was utterly desperate.

“To this day, I have no reason to do it. I keep thinking someone like you deserves a much better future than one with me.”

A special forces captain, an orphan, with no clear family, only skilled in warfare, what was there to be proud of in him?

Amidst these complex thoughts, Evander remembered a conversation that had taken place that afternoon, between himself and Victoria, Elena’s mother.

That very serious discussion was something Evander couldn’t forget, no matter how many times he tried to push it from his mind.

“At your mother’s direct request, for your life, I decided to give up, Elena. To give up on these feelings.”

*Flashback On*

“I’ve heard the widespread rumors about your relationship with my daughter. Is it true?” Victoria spoke without even looking at Evander, the man she was addressing.

“Many say you have a special closeness, not like a VIP and a personal guard. How could this happen? I don’t understand at all. Did you forget my daughter’s status and your duty, Captain?”

“Why did such news spread so widely and become unpleasant gossip? I even had to hear it, and it infuriated me.”

Evander remained silent, not answering or offering any defense.

He knew that Victoria strongly opposed these rumors, feeling displeased and very uncomfortable at the thought of her only daughter being rumored to be close to people from a lower social class, not on their level, like Captain Evander.

“I’ve warned you repeatedly, but apparently, you still don’t understand.” Victoria crossed her arms over her chest, her characteristic pose when speaking. “What else do I need to do for you to get my point?!”

“Stay away from Elena, my daughter. Because I have found the right candidate for her,” Alistair Montgomery’s wife said firmly.

She gave Evander no further opening to explain what had really happened.

The man was too stunned by the statement he had just heard.

“I don’t want Elena’s future husband to have any wrong ideas about your closeness.” Victoria stepped forward, deliberately closing the distance between herself and Evander to speak more freely.

“So, please let Elena go. Let her have a much brighter and more secure future than with you.”

“Her fiancé is someone from our circle who has everything, someone on our level. With an honorable title,” added the dignified woman who had carefully planned her daughter’s future.

Victoria wasn’t finished, she continued her speech. “Don’t you think, like I do, that Elena would be much happier marrying him than marrying you, Captain?”

It sounded rather cruel.

Evander swallowed, moistening his constricted throat.

Although painful, what Victoria said was not wrong at all. As a mother, she only wanted to secure Elena’s future, which had clearly been planned since she was young.

Finding a husband who could continue her father’s business, preserving her extended family’s good name.

“Miss Elena and I have no relationship whatsoever, as people are saying about us.” Evander spoke up after a long silence.

“So you don’t need to worry, Madam.” The man’s head lifted, staring directly at the woman before him without hesitation.

He wasn’t afraid, even if his eyes might reveal his reluctance, having to leave Elena, the woman he admired.

Evander had to accept it. This was what they called fate.

“I will simply carry out my duties as best as possible, protecting Miss Elena without involving anything, especially feelings, so don’t worry about the untrue rumors that are spreading,” he said, addressing her concerns with a clear statement.

It was what Victoria wanted, more precisely.

Actually, there were many ways Victoria could separate her daughter from the family’s personal guard.

However, it wasn’t as easy as it sounded. Only Evander was skilled and expert in his field; his other colleagues might not be as good as he was at his job.

“Good. That’s a wise decision, Captain. If that’s the case, I’ll consider the matter settled and won’t have to fire you.” A satisfied smile appeared on Victoria’s face.

Elena’s mother rose, preparing to leave. “I will begin preparing for my daughter’s engagement. The sooner you end this, the better, Captain.”

“Because we’ll both be very busy, please keep your promise without needing constant reminders. Protect Elena and make her give up on her feelings for you. Okay?”

*Flashback Off*

It only took a week to plan the engagement. The main event was held right after both families agreed, so quick. Time flowed like water, imperceptibly.

The spectacular engagement in the Montgomery family attracted everyone’s attention. It appeared in news portals, becoming the main story of the union of two honorable families predicted to form a new power in the business world.

Meanwhile, at the party, thousands of people looked happy. Only Evander stared at the stage with a cold expression.

“Congratulations to you, Miss Elena,” he whispered hoarsely. His baritone voice was inaudible to anyone.

How pathetic.

Evander shouldn’t have been the one offering congratulations on her happy day, but rather the man standing beside her, exchanging engagement rings.

What a cruel fate.

His beloved, whom he could no longer hope for, had become someone else’s, not his.

Elena's greatest happiness was to be reunited with her one and only child. After a series of terrible, tear-filled events, it finally happened. It was a moment full of tears once more, only this time, they were tears of joy.“N-Noah,” Elena whispered, covering her mouth as she looked at Noah lying in the hospital bed. His face was pale, his eyes closed, with an oxygen tube in his nose and an IV needle in his small hand. She desperately wanted to go in and hold him tight, to release the longing that had haunted her sleep every night for the past five years. But she couldn’t do that now. For the moment, they had to be content watching him through the glass. What made Elena's grief even heavier was the memory of how she had once hated the boy, believing he was the son of Evander and Hazel. But the truth was…“Honey.” Evander came closer. Elena immediately turned and fell against her husband’s chest, muffling her sobs there. Evander held her, his own eyes watery as he fought back tears, f

From inside, Evander watched the two women who had played such a significant role in his life. Hazel and Elena seemed to be speaking to one another. Emily even glanced over at Evander, her expression a mixture of confusion and questioning.Evander sighed. He was relieved Alistair didn't know the truth about the three of them. If Elena had told him, things might have gone very differently, and he certainly wouldn't have been able to return home like this. While they were preoccupied with Hazel and Elena, Alice answered her phone. The woman tensed, her eyes widening in shock."What? Honey, where are you?" she cried out in panic, drawing everyone's attention. They immediately gathered around Alice, listening with tense anticipation.Evander gestured for Alice to put the call on speaker so they could all hear the conversation. She complied.[ Darling, Noah's taken a turn for the worse! I’m taking him to the hospital! ]Everyone’s eyes flew open in shock. Evander quickly covered Elena's mo

Evander and Hazel returned, bringing Alice with them. Elena, who was initially startled to see Hazel again, quickly dismissed her presence. Her attention was now fixed on the woman they had brought with them."Who is she?" Elena asked as Evander approached and hugged her.Evander glanced at Alice, who sat with her head bowed."She is Noah's adoptive mother," he answered softly.Elena froze instantly, her face flushing as she held back tears. She walked over to Alice and knelt before her."What are you doing? Please, don't do this," Alice pleaded, sliding from the chair to sit on the floor, facing Elena.Evander and Hazel watched the scene in silence. Alistair and Emily, who had just entered, also fell quiet at the sight. With tears streaming down her face, Elena clasped her hands together, begging Alice."I know you are a good person. As mothers, we can understand each other," she said through her sobs. "I'm begging you, please give me back my son."Alice looked at her, crying. Elena

Evander slammed on the brakes, swerving to avoid a crash. He stared at Hazel, his eyes wide with disbelief at what she had just said."Please don't joke about this, Hazel. Don't lie just to make me happy," Evander snapped.Hazel sobbed softly. "Their Noah is your Noah. He's your son, the one you and Elena have been searching for all this time."Evander froze, his mouth hanging open as if he had forgotten how to breathe."What is actually happening?" he said, a broken laugh escaping between his tears. He gripped his hair in frustration, then screamed, slamming his fist against the steering wheel to unleash the storm of emotions he couldn't put into words.Images of Noah flooded his mind, the boy's constant, cheerful smiles whenever he arrived, his funny, rambling stories during their chats, the warmth of his small body in his arms, a magnet that seemed to pull away all his exhaustion and worries. And now, knowing what was happening to Noah, that his tiny body had to endure grueling pro

"Who are you?" Evander asked the fair-skinned man and woman who appeared at the door. The two, who looked like a married couple, glanced at each other for a moment."We're the Stone family. Can we help you with something?" the man replied. Now it was Elena and Evander who exchanged a look. "Isn't this the Rhodes residence?" Elena asked in disbelief. The woman with blue eyes shook her head. "No. We've lived here for three years. Is there a problem?" she asked pointedly.Evander frowned. It was impossible that Rey had given him the wrong information. The young man wouldn't dare mess with him. His eyes carefully observed the couple's every move."What do we do now?" Elena said sadly, looking hopeless.Evander wrapped an arm around her shoulders to calm her. He then gave the couple a broad smile."Ah, yes, our apologies. It seems we have the wrong address. Excuse us," he said, gently pulling Elena away from the house.Elena started to protest, but Evander signaled for her to be quiet. It

Alice stared at her husband in disbelief. He had just told her he was going to take Noah far away, to leave the city and escape from Evander and Elena."Are you serious?" she asked, her voice unsteady.Dom's jaw tightened. "They will not take Noah from us, Alice. Never," he snapped, his voice rising.Alice was taken aback. Dom was usually so calm, but now the man who had been her husband for eight years seemed distressed and agitated. She had thought she was the only one considering such drastic measures, but it turned out Dom was far more reckless."But what about Noah's condition?" Alice said softly. "You said if he needs a donor, only his biological father can save him," she continued, the words laced with pain.Dom fell silent. He clenched his fists, trying to contain the storm of emotions churning in his chest."I’ll find another treatment, no matter what it takes. Even if it means losing everything, I’ll give it all for Noah to be cured," he vowed. But then his shoulders slumped
