MasukIt only took a week to plan the engagement. The main event was held right after both families agreed, so quick. Time flowed like water, imperceptibly.
The spectacular engagement in the Montgomery family attracted everyone’s attention. It appeared in news portals, becoming the main story of the union of two honorable families predicted to form a new power in the business world.
Meanwhile, at the party, thousands of people looked happy. Only Evander stared at the stage with a cold expression.
“Congratulations to you, Miss Elena,” he whispered hoarsely. His baritone voice was inaudible to anyone.
How pathetic.
Evander shouldn’t have been the one offering congratulations on her happy day, but rather the man standing beside her, exchanging engagement rings.
What a cruel fate.
His beloved, whom he could no longer hope for, had become someone else’s, not his.
As he tried to calm his emotions, his gaze inadvertently met Elena's. This instantly locked him, unable to look away.
Evander could barely blink, unwilling for their soul-to-soul connection to end. If someone hadn't accidentally bumped his shoulder, Evander might have lingered, staring at the Princess on stage.
And afterward, he resisted casting his gaze toward the stage again. From the corner of his eye, he could see Victoria watching him sharply from her seat.
Evander chose instead to put on his sunglasses and pretend to adjust the earpiece in his ear, as if talking to other security guards on the phone.

The engagement party finally concluded. Evander drove Elena home first, as she looked exhausted after a day of smiling and receiving countless congratulations from guests.
In the car, Elena sat silently in the back seat. Her head rested against the seat, eyes staring out the window. It was clear the girl was lost in thought.
Evander watched her through the rearview mirror. Seeing Elena like that made his heart ache.
How desperately he wanted to embrace Elena, to offer his shoulder so his beloved girl could lean on it and pour out all her feelings.
"Evan?" Elena called without turning.
"Yes, Miss?" Evander replied, looking in the rearview mirror.
Elena closed her eyes, hearing how Evander answered her.
"Can we just stop by my apartment?" Elena pleaded. The beautiful girl then lifted her head and looked at Evander in the front.
"Please!" she said softly.
Evander remained silent, offering no reply, but then Elena smiled as the car turned at an intersection. It wasn't heading home, but to her apartment. She leaned her head back again.
"Thank you," she said.
Evander secretly smiled.
"You're welcome," he whispered, almost inaudibly.
The remaining half of the journey passed in silence. Yet, the two people in different seats seemed to form smiles on their faces.
Finally, their car reached its destination. Evander drove directly into the basement parking, stopping at one side of the lot.
Evander got out first, then walked around and opened Elena's door.
He held his breath slightly as Elena stepped out, their positions so close and face to face, separated only by the car door Evander held open. Their eyes met for a second before Elena looked away, and Evander closed the car door. He didn't forget to lock the car and ensure the security alarm was functioning correctly before leaving it.
"Please, go ahead, Miss," Evander said, inviting Elena to walk ahead.
The girl glanced at him briefly before taking a step, and Evander followed.
When they reached the elevator, Evander walked ahead to ensure it was empty and safe. Without making Elena wait, he nodded, signaling that the situation was clear.
All of this did not escape Elena's notice. Her eyes followed Evander's every movement with a smile on her lips.
Inside the elevator, Elena stood behind Evander.
Her eyes observed Evander's figure before her. The man seemed so tall when they were this close. Elena's height only reached his shoulder.
His broad back looked sturdy beneath the black suit he wore. It made Elena's imagination wander.
The soft chime of the elevator made her blink. She snapped out of her thoughts and saw Evander motioning for her to exit the elevator.

They went directly to Elena's unit. The girl was eager to shower and clean herself, as her body felt sticky.
"Wait here," Elena told Evander, "Make yourself at home!" she said with a smile.
Evander nodded, uttering his thanks. His demeanor remained formal, which made Elena feel a little exasperated.
"Don't be so formal, it's just the two of us here!" Elena said with a soft huff.
Evander bowed his head and then smiled, slightly easing the stiffness in the air. Elena also smiled at this. She then quickly went into her room.
Evander could finally breathe a sigh of relief, his stiff shoulders relaxing. He walked to the kitchen and poured a glass of water, his throat having been dry for a while.
Being so close to Elena felt like torture. Her every action and smile made him want to embrace her. Her sweet gaze even had the power to send his soul wandering far away.
"Oh, my God! What am I thinking?!" he muttered, rubbing his face repeatedly.
Realizing the situation was incredibly risky, Evander decided to step out onto the apartment's balcony to get some fresh air, as the oxygen inside suddenly felt scarce.
Thinking Elena might have gone to sleep, Evander took off his jacket, leaving only the white shirt underneath. He rolled up his shirt sleeves, loosened his tie, and turned off his earpiece. He placed the small device on the table.
For a moment, he enjoyed the night air after his duties for the day were complete, contemplating the misfortune that had befallen him.
Watching the girl he adored marry another man right before his very eyes, powerless to stop it. If he could have, he would have wished not to see any of it. But alas, it was part of his duty.
"Elena..."
Evander ran a hand through his hair, whispering her name as softly as the wind. His heart ached. The girl he loved was so close, yet he could do nothing. He felt he didn't even deserve to look at her.
"Evan…"
Evander's ears perked up instantly, hearing a soft voice from behind him. He turned around. And then, he felt as if all oxygen truly vanished this time. Evander opened his mouth, unable to say a word.
In the doorway, Elena stood. Dressed in sheer, thin sleepwear, the breeze seemed to accentuate the curves of her body. Her hair, usually tied up, now flowed beautifully.
Her eyes gazed softly, and her lips parted.
"Can you hug me, Evan?"
Elena's greatest happiness was to be reunited with her one and only child. After a series of terrible, tear-filled events, it finally happened. It was a moment full of tears once more, only this time, they were tears of joy.“N-Noah,” Elena whispered, covering her mouth as she looked at Noah lying in the hospital bed. His face was pale, his eyes closed, with an oxygen tube in his nose and an IV needle in his small hand. She desperately wanted to go in and hold him tight, to release the longing that had haunted her sleep every night for the past five years. But she couldn’t do that now. For the moment, they had to be content watching him through the glass. What made Elena's grief even heavier was the memory of how she had once hated the boy, believing he was the son of Evander and Hazel. But the truth was…“Honey.” Evander came closer. Elena immediately turned and fell against her husband’s chest, muffling her sobs there. Evander held her, his own eyes watery as he fought back tears, f
From inside, Evander watched the two women who had played such a significant role in his life. Hazel and Elena seemed to be speaking to one another. Emily even glanced over at Evander, her expression a mixture of confusion and questioning.Evander sighed. He was relieved Alistair didn't know the truth about the three of them. If Elena had told him, things might have gone very differently, and he certainly wouldn't have been able to return home like this. While they were preoccupied with Hazel and Elena, Alice answered her phone. The woman tensed, her eyes widening in shock."What? Honey, where are you?" she cried out in panic, drawing everyone's attention. They immediately gathered around Alice, listening with tense anticipation.Evander gestured for Alice to put the call on speaker so they could all hear the conversation. She complied.[ Darling, Noah's taken a turn for the worse! I’m taking him to the hospital! ]Everyone’s eyes flew open in shock. Evander quickly covered Elena's mo
Evander and Hazel returned, bringing Alice with them. Elena, who was initially startled to see Hazel again, quickly dismissed her presence. Her attention was now fixed on the woman they had brought with them."Who is she?" Elena asked as Evander approached and hugged her.Evander glanced at Alice, who sat with her head bowed."She is Noah's adoptive mother," he answered softly.Elena froze instantly, her face flushing as she held back tears. She walked over to Alice and knelt before her."What are you doing? Please, don't do this," Alice pleaded, sliding from the chair to sit on the floor, facing Elena.Evander and Hazel watched the scene in silence. Alistair and Emily, who had just entered, also fell quiet at the sight. With tears streaming down her face, Elena clasped her hands together, begging Alice."I know you are a good person. As mothers, we can understand each other," she said through her sobs. "I'm begging you, please give me back my son."Alice looked at her, crying. Elena
Evander slammed on the brakes, swerving to avoid a crash. He stared at Hazel, his eyes wide with disbelief at what she had just said."Please don't joke about this, Hazel. Don't lie just to make me happy," Evander snapped.Hazel sobbed softly. "Their Noah is your Noah. He's your son, the one you and Elena have been searching for all this time."Evander froze, his mouth hanging open as if he had forgotten how to breathe."What is actually happening?" he said, a broken laugh escaping between his tears. He gripped his hair in frustration, then screamed, slamming his fist against the steering wheel to unleash the storm of emotions he couldn't put into words.Images of Noah flooded his mind, the boy's constant, cheerful smiles whenever he arrived, his funny, rambling stories during their chats, the warmth of his small body in his arms, a magnet that seemed to pull away all his exhaustion and worries. And now, knowing what was happening to Noah, that his tiny body had to endure grueling pro
"Who are you?" Evander asked the fair-skinned man and woman who appeared at the door. The two, who looked like a married couple, glanced at each other for a moment."We're the Stone family. Can we help you with something?" the man replied. Now it was Elena and Evander who exchanged a look. "Isn't this the Rhodes residence?" Elena asked in disbelief. The woman with blue eyes shook her head. "No. We've lived here for three years. Is there a problem?" she asked pointedly.Evander frowned. It was impossible that Rey had given him the wrong information. The young man wouldn't dare mess with him. His eyes carefully observed the couple's every move."What do we do now?" Elena said sadly, looking hopeless.Evander wrapped an arm around her shoulders to calm her. He then gave the couple a broad smile."Ah, yes, our apologies. It seems we have the wrong address. Excuse us," he said, gently pulling Elena away from the house.Elena started to protest, but Evander signaled for her to be quiet. It
Alice stared at her husband in disbelief. He had just told her he was going to take Noah far away, to leave the city and escape from Evander and Elena."Are you serious?" she asked, her voice unsteady.Dom's jaw tightened. "They will not take Noah from us, Alice. Never," he snapped, his voice rising.Alice was taken aback. Dom was usually so calm, but now the man who had been her husband for eight years seemed distressed and agitated. She had thought she was the only one considering such drastic measures, but it turned out Dom was far more reckless."But what about Noah's condition?" Alice said softly. "You said if he needs a donor, only his biological father can save him," she continued, the words laced with pain.Dom fell silent. He clenched his fists, trying to contain the storm of emotions churning in his chest."I’ll find another treatment, no matter what it takes. Even if it means losing everything, I’ll give it all for Noah to be cured," he vowed. But then his shoulders slumped
