By the time we made it downstairs, the house had already found its familiar rhythm. Somewhere in the kitchen, dishes clinked softly. Nicholas had decided that being awake before everyone else was his greatest accomplishment in life, and his happy babbles floated through the hallway. Outside, the first rays of morning painted the gardens in warm gold, making the dew shimmer across the grass.
