My alarm goes off at 6, but I didn’t sleep at all; too much was on my mind. I go downstairs to the kitchen to grab coffee and a granola bar before I begin my walk to the gym. I mind link Colton and Grant, my future beta and gamma. “We have some things to discuss today. Plan on a run to the packhouse after training.” “Ugh dude stop being such a hard ass. Can’t we take a day off every now and then?” Grant lazily says. “Sounds like you’ve had a long night. Who was it? Lacey or Deanna?” Colton mocks. Grant is definitely a ladies man. Not saying we don’t all enjoy a good roll in the hay. Grant just indulges the most. “Neither. I had a strange feeling in the middle of the night. I couldn’t shake it until well after 4. Now this morning Dad is gone. So something is definitely up. Spill the beans, Almighty Alpha.” That got my attention. Grant never loses a night of sleep. An entire construction site couldn’t keep him awake. And stress? I’m surprised the guy even knows the meaning of the word: he’s the personification of don’t worry, be happy. Something is definitely going on. “Yeah my dad just got in about half an hour ago. You really gonna make us wait a whole hour to find out what’s going on?” “Colton see if you can get any info from Uncle Dave. Grant, who was the doctor from White Fang that helped your dad after that rogue attack last year?” “I don’t know. Johnathan something. Holder maybe? What does that have to do with anything?” “Hopefully I can tell you the answer to that soon. I’ll be at the gym in five. Don’t be late. We need to set an example.” I close the link and take a long sip of coffee. The air smells different today. Sweeter, like my mom’s flower garden, even though it’s in the middle of February. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but my entire being seems to relax just a little. Colton arrives five minutes before 7, though Grant comes strolling in with seconds to spare, looking like absolute shit. “Dude you weren’t kidding. You look like you’ve been hit by a bus.” Colton mindlinks the both of us. “Haha very funny asshole. I look better than you any day of the week. “Time to get serious guys. We can talk about how ugly you both are later.” I quip back before turning my attention to the warriors. Everyone here is either in high school or college. People with their wolves have additional training with my dad after school, but we believe it’s just as important to train our human forms as it is to train our wolves. “Get in five laps then start with weights. At 7:30 we pair up. Go!” I shout, and everyone is off. Anyone foolish enough not to stretch beforehand, like Grant, is shit out of luck. After we get individual training done, I announce pairs. Everyone finds their partner, meanwhile my team and I observe and give feedback until it’s time for a break. Much to my dismay, my fan club fawns over me when I pair up with Colton. He’s weaker than me but just barely. Jaqueline, the most annoying she wolf on the planet, saunters up to me and whispers “good luck, my alpha,” before rejoining her group of girls. She’s convinced when she gets her wolf in two months that we will be mates. I pray the Moon Goddess isn’t that cruel. You hook up with someone one time in a drunken haze, and now they think they own you. I block out all the negative thoughts and focus on beating Colton. He knows my weaknesses and strengths better than anyone. Grant and Trey, my future head warrior, stand on either side of us, waiting to critique our match. We’re off, and Colton can feel my distraction, so he goes for a right hook first to try and knock me on my ass. Thankfully I snap out of it just in time and dodge his fist. I use his momentum against him and go for a rib shot. I make contact, but he managed to move just enough that the blow is not as effective as I anticipated. He recovers and swings behind me, ready to attack. We go at it full force, him hitting me, me hitting him until time is called. We’re both pouring sweat and panting by the time we’re done. We shake hands, and I tell everyone to get back to work. “Something’s got you distracted, Brady. You good?” Trey notices everything, granted he’s also three years older than us, so he picks up on cues quickly. Thankfully he’s smart enough to wait till everyone has walked off. There’s only about 10 minutes left in training, so it’s not a huge deal if I miss a few spars. “Yeah. Just got some stuff on my mind. You know anything about some new pack members?” I ask. Dad has started letting Trey take over some of the border controls, but Trey asked to wait until I became alpha to take over full time. “Damn. Didn’t realize Alpha was letting that be known yet. Yeah they arrived late last night. Sounds like a fugitive situation. From what I gathered the guy’s daughter was in some serious trouble. I didn’t press. Sounded kinda personal. I was just told to keep an eye out for any warriors from White Fang, except for their beta. He’s the one who helped get them out. Not sure what all is going on there.” “Hmm. Dad didn’t tell me anything yet. I noticed he got in late last night and overheard him talking to Mom. Thanks man. I really owe you one. And don’t worry. I didn’t hear anything from you.” I see the relief flood over Trey’s face at my last statement. Dad believes in keeping tight lips though I usually get clued in on most things now. Maybe he’ll tell me at dinner tonight. Regardless, my curiosity is officially piqued. I can’t help but wonder what could possibly be going on in White Fang, and why on earth my dad chose to get involved.~Brady~Jagger comes to dinner before Lindsey. A part of me is nervous; weren’t they supposed to be together? I search the room for Logan but can’t find him either. My brain is fighting itself: one side coming up with excuses for her and one side thinking the worst. That’s when I smell her: vanilla and lavender. I turn towards the door and see her eyes heavy with exhaustion. They brighten when she meets my eyes. She walks over to me and wraps her arms around me, laying her head on my chest. “Hey.”“Hey. You ok? You look tired.” I can’t help but sound concerned. “If it’s too much, I can-“She gently kisses my lips. “I’m fine. Can we talk after dinner?” I nod in approval. My parents come in shortly after and start dinner service. Lindsey sits with Deanna and Callie, planning Callie’s upcoming mating ceremony. I notice Willow is not with them. “She’s with Hunter. Apparently she’s not spending as much time with them anymore.” Logan interrupts my thoughts. “Who?” I ask, though I alrea
~Lindsey~ “Hmmm. What about this one? She hails from Dark Paw. That’s where Luna Maci and her sister Darla were from.” I point to a lively looking she wolf. Kiera Mavis: age 19, blue eyes, red hair, likes hunting. “I don’t know. She looks a little crazy.” Jagger focuses on her face, a worrisome look on his brow. “This feels insane. Like I’m going back to the olden days with mail order brides.” He collapses in a chair and buries his face in his hands. I want to walk over and encourage him, but I’ve been told no physical contact. Nothing that can be taken the wrong way. I sigh, hugging myself instead. “I know. It’s hard, but you and your pack need a luna. Remember, we’re just weeding out the candidates that you aren’t interested in.” “Make that all of them.” He mutters, looking down at the plethora of applications in front of him. So many she wolves wanting to be a luna. “Oh don’t be like that.” I sit beside him but keep a safe distance away. “Let’s keep looking. Give me your
~Brady~ One normal week would be nice. Instead, I’m dragging my mate and her friend to the packhouse because she’s needed in “finding Jagger a mate”. Allegedly. I can hardly believe that there’s no one more qualified than Lindsey to help him. Colton, in jest, suggested it, but now Hunter is using it as an opportunity to bring the two of them together. He’s convinced Jagger somehow that it will help him overcome his feelings for Lindsey. Sadly, allies are known to do this. My mother is old enough to be these girls’ mother, and no neighboring packs have young lunas. Lindsey is my claimed, and probably fated, mate. Thus she has the title of rising luna, making her the most eligible option. I explain the logistics of this to Lindsey and Callie as we drive. I notice Callie getting visibly uncomfortable. “I don’t like this. It seems like a set up.” Callie looks at me in the rear view mirror. That just confirms that my gut instincts are right. “Jagger would never hurt me or cros
~Lindsey~“That’s a wrap. Good job today everyone!” I crash onto the floor, gasping for air. “Holy shit my legs feel like they’re on fire.” I pant. “Yeah I have no clue how I’m going to get up. How did everyone from morning training survive?” Callie dramatically sprawls herself onto the floor like a starfish beside me. “Oh come on you two. It wasn’t that bad.” Callie and I both shoot Deanna looks of annoyance. Curse her for being in such good shape. “Ok it was rough, but that just means we’re better prepared! I hear shifters are getting a double dose today. We’re practicing in human form this afternoon.” She tilts her head as Callie lets out a groan. “You’re probably sore from other reasons, too. Huh Callie?” I nudge her playfully. “Oh my gosh. Shut up Lindsey. You’re so embarrassing.” She sits up and covers her face in shame. “Girl you smell exactly like Trey. There’s no denying it. You sleep over or something?” Deanna winks. “No. He’s finishing up some changes on our home.
~Brady~Nauseous is an understatement. I thought we were past this. I believed we were past this. But now? Seeing Lindsey and Jagger embrace so intimately has me feeling sick in more ways than one. I’ve got a million questions flooding my brain though my chaos remains hidden behind a mask of steel. Does she still love him? Does she want him?Did his confession change how she felt?Does she still want me?“Oh shut up. We should’ve kicked his ass out of our pack weeks ago!” Knight growls in the back of my mind. Colton stands beside me and mind links me. “Dude I feel your frustration, but you know Lindsey. You gotta trust her. Those two idiots are her childhood friends.”“One of whom she conveniently fucked?” I link back. “Yes but forget that for a second. You know she’s got a huge heart. They’re preying on her sympathy. You’re covered in blood and scratches. Play the same card after John takes over.”Despite myself, my eyebrow cocks. He may look dull, but Colton has recently becom
~Lindsey~ Dad and I finally got to go home after weeks of living in the packhouse. The peacefulness of living in a house that you have to yourself instead of the hustle and bustle of the packhouse is refreshing. I got approval to miss dinner tonight so that Dad and I could have some time alone. I’m stirring the alfredo sauce so that it stays smooth while making sure the pasta doesn’t boil over. Dad is out back grilling the chicken. We sit down to eat which feels bizarre after having so many public meals. Something about this feels private, personal. Like it’s a moment that was crafted just for us. We chat about our day, all the craziness that has happened recently, and the spring pack party that I helped plan. I’m really enjoying feeling like things are going to normal when I see the blood drain from Dad’s face. “What’s wrong?” I reach out and touch Dad’s hand, concerned. I’m sure he’s just gotten a mind link. “I need you to come with me quickly. But you need to be prepared. It
~Lindsey~ I must be hallucinating. There’s no way he’s still holding on to the delusion that I’m his mate. The only thing keeping me from marking Brady right now is the fact that I don’t have a wolf. I’ve known for a while that he’s the one; no one else gets me like he does. “Mate,” I hear a fe
~Brady~The redness on Lindsey’s cheeks confirm my suspicions. Knight was in an excellent mood after pouncing on Lindsey at practice, not to mention the attention she showed him in front of everyone. I happened to overhear parts of her and Callie’s conversation, which led me to believe my choice t
~Brady~ I’m fighting off Knight with everything in me. All he wants to do is jump Logan and beat the shit out of him, which doesn’t sound like his worst idea at the moment. The only way I’m able to hold it together is the look on Lindsey’s face, confirming that she does not approve of him or his a
~Lindsey~ The morning went by quickly; Fridays feel a little more chaotic for some reason. Mrs. Williams was back and screaming again. She seemed a little more angry than normal, that is, until she left for several minutes. A part of me wished she would meet her secret lover before my class just
