After breakfast, Dad and I prepared to head out to buy some essentials. I open the door and almost run into an enormous man. I gasp and take two steps back, almost falling into my dad. “Lin, it’s ok! This is Mr. Matt. He’s here to make sure we’re safe. I’m sorry. I completely forgot to tell you.” I take a deep breath in and try to compose myself. “It’s ok, Dad. It’s nice to meet you Mr. Matt. I’m Lindsey.” I extend a hand to greet him. “Nice to meet you, Lindsey. Sorry if I scared you. I probably would’ve decked someone if they were standing outside my door.” Mr. Matt jokes as he installs a doorbell with a camera. I let out a laugh. “Well I guess it’s a good thing it’s me and not you.” “That’s true,” he replies with a smile. “I have a daughter about your age. Her name is Callyn, but we all call her Callie. She’s a senior at the high school. She’s a handful, but I hope the two of you will become friends. I’m almost finished setting up the security cameras. Should be finished by the time you get back.” “Well then we will get out of your way. Thank you for making time for us so short notice.” Dad says. “Thanks Mr. Matt! I hope I will meet her soon. I’m sure we will get along great!” Unless of course she turns out to be a total jerk, I think to myself. “No problem! And I’ll tell her to keep an eye out for you Lindsey! If you guys get lost, just mindlink Beta Dave. He will make sure you get what you need.” We thank Mr. Matt again and head out in the rental car. Dad says we need to get new clothes first, just enough to get us by for another week. Hopefully we will be able to get the rest of our things soon. We get to the department store and split up. After grabbing a cart, I go pick out some essentials first; Dad packed about three sets of clothes for each of us, but he said we need one set for at least every day of the week. I prefer comfort over style, so I grab a few pairs of leggings, some joggers, and two pairs of jeans. I pick out a few shirts, a sweatshirt, and a hoodie since it’s still cold out. I briefly look at the dresses; I’m not a huge fan but I’ll need some for casual pack events. I grab a maroon cotton dress with long puff sleeves. I grab some underwear and socks last, and go browse shoes for a little while. Not that I need them, but shoes are my favorite. I text Dad to tell him that I’m finished and that I’m in the shoe aisle though he knows me well enough to know that’s where I’d be. We have to go buy his scrubs after we finish up here. I hope we have another day together before he has to start work. I’m not ready to be on my own or start a new school just yet. “Hey kiddo. Got everything you need?” He walks up holding his haul over his arm. “Yep! Wait, why do you have dress pants? Worried you’ll have important meetings your first week?” I ask jokingly. “Oh shoot. I forgot to tell you to pick out something nice. We have pack dinner on Friday. Our new Alpha and Luna want to introduce us to the pack and give us a big welcome. Go find a nice dress. I’m assuming you’ve found some shoes you want?” He half jokes. “Maybe,” I reply mischievously. “I’ll be right back. I saw one that I liked on a mannequin. Let me go see if they have my size.” “Grab two dresses just in case. I don’t know how long it will take to get our old things, and I want you to have options. Hand me what you’ve got so far, and I’ll wait for you at the checkout.” I hurry back to the women’s clothing and find the dress I saw. It’s a silky lavender color with a sweetheart neckline, off the shoulder straps, and an A line skirt that should hit right at my knee. Ironically I like dressing more modest than most wolves. I just feel more comfortable that way. I quickly look around and spot a navy velvet dress. It’s got a tiered skirt and long sleeves, making it perfect for Friday. I hurry back to Dad, who is waiting patiently with the pair of shoes I was eyeing in one hand and a pile of clothes on his other arm. I don’t know why he didn’t just get a cart. “Dad I don’t need those shoes. We’ve got enough as it is. I have three pairs at the house already.” “Eh I think you need these. I haven’t bought you new shoes in a while. Besides they’re a little nicer so they will go with your dress.” Nicer is an understatement. They’re beige pumps from my favorite shoe brand. Even though they’re plain, they still cost a fortune. “Did you see the price on those? They’re like $200. Totally not worth it right now. I can get some different ones that will serve the same purpose for a lot less.” I turn to go back to the shoe section, but Dad stops me. “Lin I have plenty of money. The least I can do is buy you a nice pair of shoes. Unless you’re going back to get those sneakers you were eyeballing then don’t even think about it.” “Just how long were you watching me?” I ask with a giggle. “You’re in your own world when you’re around shoes. I’ve known that since you were five.” He gives me that bittersweet smile that always pops up when he talks about me as a kid. “Yeah well I guess there are worse addictions.” I smile back. We checkout and go load up the car. Dad tells me to go to the food court while he buys some scrubs. He meets me maybe 15 minutes later with a large bag. We sit down and eat some lo mein, orange chicken, and wontons, enjoying each other’s company.~Brady~Jagger comes to dinner before Lindsey. A part of me is nervous; weren’t they supposed to be together? I search the room for Logan but can’t find him either. My brain is fighting itself: one side coming up with excuses for her and one side thinking the worst. That’s when I smell her: vanilla and lavender. I turn towards the door and see her eyes heavy with exhaustion. They brighten when she meets my eyes. She walks over to me and wraps her arms around me, laying her head on my chest. “Hey.”“Hey. You ok? You look tired.” I can’t help but sound concerned. “If it’s too much, I can-“She gently kisses my lips. “I’m fine. Can we talk after dinner?” I nod in approval. My parents come in shortly after and start dinner service. Lindsey sits with Deanna and Callie, planning Callie’s upcoming mating ceremony. I notice Willow is not with them. “She’s with Hunter. Apparently she’s not spending as much time with them anymore.” Logan interrupts my thoughts. “Who?” I ask, though I alrea
~Lindsey~ “Hmmm. What about this one? She hails from Dark Paw. That’s where Luna Maci and her sister Darla were from.” I point to a lively looking she wolf. Kiera Mavis: age 19, blue eyes, red hair, likes hunting. “I don’t know. She looks a little crazy.” Jagger focuses on her face, a worrisome look on his brow. “This feels insane. Like I’m going back to the olden days with mail order brides.” He collapses in a chair and buries his face in his hands. I want to walk over and encourage him, but I’ve been told no physical contact. Nothing that can be taken the wrong way. I sigh, hugging myself instead. “I know. It’s hard, but you and your pack need a luna. Remember, we’re just weeding out the candidates that you aren’t interested in.” “Make that all of them.” He mutters, looking down at the plethora of applications in front of him. So many she wolves wanting to be a luna. “Oh don’t be like that.” I sit beside him but keep a safe distance away. “Let’s keep looking. Give me your
~Brady~ One normal week would be nice. Instead, I’m dragging my mate and her friend to the packhouse because she’s needed in “finding Jagger a mate”. Allegedly. I can hardly believe that there’s no one more qualified than Lindsey to help him. Colton, in jest, suggested it, but now Hunter is using it as an opportunity to bring the two of them together. He’s convinced Jagger somehow that it will help him overcome his feelings for Lindsey. Sadly, allies are known to do this. My mother is old enough to be these girls’ mother, and no neighboring packs have young lunas. Lindsey is my claimed, and probably fated, mate. Thus she has the title of rising luna, making her the most eligible option. I explain the logistics of this to Lindsey and Callie as we drive. I notice Callie getting visibly uncomfortable. “I don’t like this. It seems like a set up.” Callie looks at me in the rear view mirror. That just confirms that my gut instincts are right. “Jagger would never hurt me or cros
~Lindsey~“That’s a wrap. Good job today everyone!” I crash onto the floor, gasping for air. “Holy shit my legs feel like they’re on fire.” I pant. “Yeah I have no clue how I’m going to get up. How did everyone from morning training survive?” Callie dramatically sprawls herself onto the floor like a starfish beside me. “Oh come on you two. It wasn’t that bad.” Callie and I both shoot Deanna looks of annoyance. Curse her for being in such good shape. “Ok it was rough, but that just means we’re better prepared! I hear shifters are getting a double dose today. We’re practicing in human form this afternoon.” She tilts her head as Callie lets out a groan. “You’re probably sore from other reasons, too. Huh Callie?” I nudge her playfully. “Oh my gosh. Shut up Lindsey. You’re so embarrassing.” She sits up and covers her face in shame. “Girl you smell exactly like Trey. There’s no denying it. You sleep over or something?” Deanna winks. “No. He’s finishing up some changes on our home.
~Brady~Nauseous is an understatement. I thought we were past this. I believed we were past this. But now? Seeing Lindsey and Jagger embrace so intimately has me feeling sick in more ways than one. I’ve got a million questions flooding my brain though my chaos remains hidden behind a mask of steel. Does she still love him? Does she want him?Did his confession change how she felt?Does she still want me?“Oh shut up. We should’ve kicked his ass out of our pack weeks ago!” Knight growls in the back of my mind. Colton stands beside me and mind links me. “Dude I feel your frustration, but you know Lindsey. You gotta trust her. Those two idiots are her childhood friends.”“One of whom she conveniently fucked?” I link back. “Yes but forget that for a second. You know she’s got a huge heart. They’re preying on her sympathy. You’re covered in blood and scratches. Play the same card after John takes over.”Despite myself, my eyebrow cocks. He may look dull, but Colton has recently becom
~Lindsey~ Dad and I finally got to go home after weeks of living in the packhouse. The peacefulness of living in a house that you have to yourself instead of the hustle and bustle of the packhouse is refreshing. I got approval to miss dinner tonight so that Dad and I could have some time alone. I’m stirring the alfredo sauce so that it stays smooth while making sure the pasta doesn’t boil over. Dad is out back grilling the chicken. We sit down to eat which feels bizarre after having so many public meals. Something about this feels private, personal. Like it’s a moment that was crafted just for us. We chat about our day, all the craziness that has happened recently, and the spring pack party that I helped plan. I’m really enjoying feeling like things are going to normal when I see the blood drain from Dad’s face. “What’s wrong?” I reach out and touch Dad’s hand, concerned. I’m sure he’s just gotten a mind link. “I need you to come with me quickly. But you need to be prepared. It
~Lindsey~ I can’t believe Callie’s wild accusations against Jagger. She barely knows him and is already accusing him of having ulterior motives. I’m sure he just needs allies to take back White Fang from his dad. Black Forest is one of the strongest packs in the region; it’s understandable why he
~Lindsey~My jaw drops. I see the pain in Jagger’s face and I know he’s not lying. I get a sick feeling in my stomach. “What happened?” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. “Rogue attack. They were ambushed.” Jagger looks down. I see a tear in his eye. “When?” “About a month ago.”I reach o
~Lindsey~Lunch goes by quickly; Logan decided to sit at the table next to ours and make loud comments the entire time that I’m sure he intended us to hear. I almost feel sorry for him; Callie was ready for any remark he had to say. Calculus and gym seem to fly by. We’re working on softball this w
~Brady~ The rest of the morning flies by. A small part of me feels lighter after making amends with Lindsey, but I still feel the need to win back her favor. Knight and I have been discussing little ways to improve our situation. We’re headed to science class when all of a sudden I feel an arm s
