Drew steps aside a smile spreading across his face as he shows me the apartment. I look around the cozy space taking everything in. It’s smaller than I imagined but at this point I would live in a shoe box if it meant being reunited with my brother again. I look at the worn hardwood floors, and the compact kitchenette opening to the living room where faded curtains hang and I smile to myself. I turn to Drew, my face lighting up with excitement. "It's perfect, D!" I launch myself into his arms for a tight hug and he chuckles as he wraps his own around me. "I know it's small, but it's what I can afford right now.” He says and I can hear the apology in his voice. I know the sacrifices Drew has already made just so that I could move in with him. He’s only twenty, juggling two jobs all while attending college and now he has taken on the responsibility of taking care of me. It’s more than I can ask for and I can’t even begin to let him know how much I appreciate him. “I love it, Drew. Really.” I tell him squeezing his hand so that he knows I’m being sincere. Just then, we hear a groan echo from the back of the room. “Mia! This box is freaking heavy! Where do you want it?" Hayden asks as he comes in stumbling slightly, struggling to manage a bulky box filled with my books. I quickly let go of Drew and rush over to help Hayden, my hands grasping for the box. “Hey, careful with those!" I warn as I help him set it down gently on the floor. “These are my babies!” Hayden let’s out a breath and shakes his head at me. “Could you be any more of a nerd?” I grin at him and hit him playfully. “Mia seriously, how much stuff do you own!” Scott groans dramatically as he walks in with my pink purse slung awkwardly across his shoulder, dragging my suitcase behind him. I fight the urge to laugh at the sight of him wearing one of my pink hats, dangling a pair of my heels in his other hand. Hayden, never one to miss an opportunity, strolls over and adjusts the hat on Scott's head, teasing, "Aw, don't you look like a pretty little princess?" Drew takes out his phone and snaps a quick photo while Hayden makes a peace sign. Tom just dead pans as the flash goes off. "Screw all of you.” I chuckle and hurry over to help Scott. "Thanks, Scotty, I think that's about it," I say placing a kiss on his cheek. “Gosh, I can’t believe you’re gonna be our new housemate.” Hayden says brushing his blonde hair out of his face as he pushes another of my boxed up stuff towards my new room. To be honest, I can’t believe it either. I never imagined I’d get this taste of freedom before I turned eighteen but here I am. "Alright, listen up!" Drew announces going to stand on the couch, his eyes narrow as he stares down Hayden and Scott. “I have some rules." Scott and Hayden groaned in unison and I can tell Drew is about to go into overprotective big brother mode. "Mia's officially living here and taking over my room, so all you idiots need to learn how to act with a girl living in the house now!" Drew yells. I know me being here will be quite the adjustment considering how it’s been an all boys house until my arrival. “Y’all need to learn how to keep it down. It’s Mia’s senior year and she needs to focus. Number two, Mia’s only seventeen so let’s keep it PG. I’m talking to you Hayden.“ “What’s that supposed to mean?” Hayden protests. “It means no more one night stands,” Scott hits him and chuckles. “At least not here.” Hayden looks dejected but before he can protest Drew continues; “and number 3, no leaving your drawers all over the freaking place!” “I second that!” I speak raising my hands earnestly. Scott attacks me in a hug, playfully messing up my hair. “Don’t worry, M, we’ll be the perfect gentlemen for our little princess.” He said with a smile as I pushed him away. "Yeah, you'll totally love it here, M. And I promise to leave the toilet seat down." Hayden chimed in holding up a hand in a scout’s honour gesture I can’t help but smile. Only days ago, I was living in my own personal hell with my dad but now my older brother had custody of me and I’m going to be living with him and his best friends who have known me long enough to be like brothers to me as well. It feels good, like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I know I’ll be safe here. Way safer than I was at home anyway. “Thank you guys.” I say, “really, it means a lot that you’re all taking me in.” Drew gives me a sad smile. He knows what I’ve been through. How hard it was for me back home. He walks over and gives me a hug, kissing my forehead. “Don’t worry, M, you’re safe here.” He reassures me, his voice gentle and protective. Scott, places a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Yeah, no one's touching you with us around.” I feel tears prick at my eyes touched by their words. Before I can process the emotions swirling inside me, Hayden's booming voice cuts through the air. "Group hug!" he yells, and in an instant, his large frame envelops us in a massive bear hug. "Hayden, can't breathe!" Drew groans, his voice muffled by Hayden's grip. But Hayden just chuckles, his deep voice rumbling. "Just embrace it and feel the love, brother!" I laugh, feeling a sense of belonging wash over me. In this moment, surrounded by by my brother and his friends, I realize I might have just found the family I've always wanted."Whoa, did you get into a fight or something?" I looked up from the book I had been reading and saw Branson carrying his guitar case and slumping into the chair next to me. We were in the cafeteria and I had barely touched my 'surprise meat'. Kaden hadn't texted me back all night and I hadn't heard from him all morning either. Quite frankly I was getting worried. He had left my house in such low spirits and I just knew he was beating himself up over everything that was going on. Was I afraid? Heck yeah! Now that I had gotten the chance to actually sit in silence with what had happened, I was terrified that someone out there was planning my literal demise."Mia?" Branson spoke again and this time I found hin staring at me strangely with a confused look on his face. "Oh." I hadn't realised I had completely zoned out right now. I looked at my still bandaged hand realising this is what he had been referring to. "Oh this is nothing." I spoke quickly tucking my hand underneath the tabl
"You've got to be f*cking kidding me!" Drew yelled practically sweeping all the plastic cups on the kitchen island from where they had been placed. The Chinese food the guys had ordered was practically too cold to eat now. Heck, who was I kidding, the tension in the room was enough to take away everyone's appetites. All of us were gathered in our tiny kitchen in a way that was almost comical. I was standing in between Scott and Hayden like they were my bodyguards still wearing my clothes from last night. Kaden was across from us with Rand and Nick also looking like his bodyguards. Not that anyone could possibly protect him from Drew's rage right now. Drew gripped his hands into fists as he stared down Kaden and I had a feeling he really wished they were in the ring right now. "You had a target put on my baby sister's head?" Drew yelled. Kaden let out a huff and looked at the ground. "Listen, man..." "Don't you dare tell me to listen." Drew snapped. "We are not friends. Do you
"So, we're just gonna pretend that didn't happen?" I asked out loud once the silence between Kaden and I had gotten way too unbearable. We had just left Shark's house and Kaden had been so quiet and serious, it was almost frightening. "That's pretty much my plan." Kaden spoke. I saw him look into the rear view mirror and I knew immediately he was studying the Ford truck Rand and Nick were in behind us. I sighed and sank back into my seat reaching over to rub the bandage around my hand. "What were you two talking about back there with Shark? When you asked me to leave?" Kaden was silent for a few minutes, his eyes fixed on the road. "I'd prefer it if you didn't ask me such questions, Mia." I immediately felt my blood start to boil after he said that. "Oh, I'm sorry, would you rather I talk about the shooting that happened at your house? Or maybe the girl I found in your room. Do tell, Kaden." Kaden ran a hand down his face. I could immediately tell he was frustrated
I woke up to the smell of bacon sizzling and eggs frying. For a second I thought I was dreaming until my eyes opened and I found myself on a couch. Not just any couch, Shark's couch. Everything from last night suddenly came rushing back and I shot up where I sat. I looked up and saw the familiar blonde guy by the stove... shirtless might I add as he flipped something over in a pan. Well, that couldn't be safe. I sat up rubbing my eyes and realised I had a jacket spread across me. I let my fingers trail over it wondering if Shark had put it on me in the middle of the night. The idea that he might have filled me with conflicting feelings. Why would he be remotely nice to me? I was his arch nemesis' girlfriend. "You're up." Shark spoke when he turned and I found his eyes on me. I blinked away the sleep from my face as I stood up. "Yeah." I looked around desperately wanting to check what time it was then I remembered I had broken my phone. Great. Drew was not on
“Mia? Do you mind?” Hayden asked as he offered his gloved hand to me gesturing me to secure the strap.I walked over to help. The atmosphere in the club was more electric than usual tonight. And I could tell it wasn’t just the watchers who were fired up.“Does he always get like this?” I muttered t
“Mia?” Branson asked in confusion. He then turned to look in the direction I was staring. What I had thought was a ghost was heading right in our direction, determination in his eyes.I swallowed hard.“Mia?” Branson asked again, this time more cautiously with an edge to his voice and I knew he was
A few minutes later we were parked outside the club.“We’ll be back in a few.” Scott spoke as he and Hayden got out.He came over to the window where I sat. “You sure you’ll be okay?”I nodded at him even though just being here made me feel tense. But I wasn’t going to go in there and increase the
“Crap, Shark is here?” Rand asked as he leaned forward seeming way more interested. I watched as muscular blonde guy with short cropped hair stepped up making the crowd go insane. “Who is this Shark guy?” I asked leaning into Silver She also had her eyes fixed on the ring now. “He comes aroun
