Damian's POV

She called at six in the evening.

"I need the Voss household authorization logs from eighteen years ago sent to Aldric tonight," she said. "Bret has them. Can you arrange it?"

"Yes. I'll call him now."

"And—" A pause. "Renn is asking for you."

I went very still.

"He doesn't have language yet," she said, before I could respond. "He doesn't ask for anything in words. But he's been—" Another pause. "He knows. I don't know how to explain it more than that. He knows and he keeps looking

But he's been—" Another pause. "He knows. I don't know how to explain it more than that. He knows and he keeps looking at the door." A breath. "If you want to come this evening, come. If you're not ready—""I'll be there in an hour," I said.---Caden opened the door. Looked at me. Said nothing and stepped back, which was the most civil thing he had done in my direction in the weeks since I'd known he existed. The flat was lit warmly. Something cooking — the smell of it domestic and ordinary, the specific normalcy of an evening in a place where someone lived rather than worked. I had been in the office and in t

Elara's POVHe called the next morning at eight."Can we meet?" he said. "Properly. Somewhere we can talk without—" A pause. "Without me leaving before it's finished."I looked at Renn in his chair, examining his breakfast with deep suspicion."Two hours," I said. "My office at noon."---He arrived at noon exactly.Petra showed him in and closed the door and I heard her outer office chair scrape in the particular way it scraped when she was positioning herself to be useful if required. I made a note to give her a raise.Damian sat across the desk. Looked around the office — the files, the east-facing window, the map of cross-territory supply routes pinned to the wall. He didn't comment on any of it but he looked at all of it."You built this," he said."Yes.""From nothing.""From forty-seven dollars and a routing problem." I opened the folder in front of me. "I have terms."He looked at the folder. Then at me. "Alright.""Not relationship terms," I said. "Not forgiveness terms. Not

Elara's POVHe came back at seven.I had half expected it. I opened the door and looked at him and stepped back without saying anything. He came in. Looked at the flat — the desk, the files, the portable cot folded in the corner, all the evidence of a life built in small rooms.Caden was not here. Renn was asleep in the back room.I put the kettle on because it gave me something to do with my hands."You didn't have to come back," I said."I know." He sat at the kitchen table without being invited, the way he had in the bakery — asking first, then settling. "There are things I didn't say. Out there.""You don't owe me an explanation.""I know that too." A pause. "I want to give you one anyway."I turned around. Leaned against the counter. Looked at him."My mother," he said. "You know she left.""Yes.""What you don't know — what most people don't know — is that she left because she followed the bond. Not away from my father, toward someone else. She felt a fated pull to something tha

Elara's POVI felt him before I saw him.The bond shifted the way it had in the meeting room, the tide coming in and I looked up from the steps outside the bakery and there he was, at the far end of the street, walking toward me.No car behind him. No council member. No intermediary.Just him.I didn't move. I watched him come and felt the bond get louder with every step he closed between us and kept my hands flat on my knees and my face still. He stopped in front of me.We looked at each other."You found me," I said."Selene told me you were in danger." His voice was careful. Something behind it that wasn't careful at all. "Elder Mara is moving faster than—""I know.""Yvonne has—""I know, Damian." I looked up at him. "I have known for three days. I have been handling it."He stopped. The street moved around us — a woman with a pushchair, two men in conversation, a delivery truck pulling away from the kerb. All of it completely indifferent."Then why are you sitting outside a bake

Selene's POVHe knocked on my door at nine in the evening. Not the study. My room. He never came to my room — we maintained a polite separation of private spaces that had been unspoken and absolute since the engagement began. The knock was quiet, three times, and I knew from the particular quality of it that this was not a social visit.I opened the door.He looked at me for a moment. "Can I come in?"I stepped back.He came in and stayed standing. That told me something. He sat down for conversations he expected to manage. He stood for conversations he wasn't sure of."What do you know?" he said.I kept my face neutral. "About what?""Selene."Just my name. The same way he'd said it the night I asked about the bond — the tone that meant he was done with the architecture of the conversation and wanted what was underneath it.I sat on the edge of the bed. Crossed my ankles. Thought about what I'd decided since my mother's house. What I'd committed to in the car on the way home, noteboo

Damian's POVThe message came through the formal elder channel at seven in the morning. Not email but through the elder channel, an old system, predating everything digital, a series of sealed letters passed through designated pack couriers that arrived bearing a wax seal no one in my pack had seen used in my lifetime. My assistant brought it in with the expression of someone holding something she didn't understand and wasn't sure she should be touching.I opened it at my desk. One line.Control your house, Alpha, before someone else does it for you.Signed with Elder Mara's full title. Three lines of formal designation that hadn't been used in formal correspondence in thirty years.I read it twice. Put it flat on the desk. Then I called Bret.He arrived in four minutes, which meant he'd been in the building already. He read the letter standing in front of my desk and said nothing for a moment."She hasn't used the elder channel since your father's time," he said."I know.""This is a
