Dana POV: Divorced, Crushed
I grip Alex's hand tighter as we step into the posh hallway of Kelly Stanton's law firm, the marble floors echoing our footsteps like a countdown. My heart pounds, a wild drum in my chest, because today is the day I finally tell him.
When he told me we were coming to see Kelly, I knew our contract marriage was about to end.
Two weeks ago, we weren't supposed to cross that line—our contract marriage was clear: no intimacy, no complications. But we did, tangled in sheets and whispers in his penthouse, and it shattered me in the best way. I loved every second, loved him, because somewhere in these two years of pretending, Alex made me feel safe, and cherished, like no man ever has. His quiet strength, the way he looks at me like I'm the only thing that matters in his billion-dollar world, it's undone me. I'm in love with him, deeply, terrifyingly, and I can't hold it in anymore.
"Alex," I say, pulling him to a stop just outside Kelly's office door. My heart is drumming but I force myself on. "I need to talk to you. It's important."He glances down at me, his chiseled jaw set in a way that's become sweetly familiar this past year, his beautiful dark eyes distant, and cold. "Can it wait? We're already late."Before I can answer, the door swings open, and Kelly steps out in polished suit and a warm solicitor’s smile. "Alex! Dana! Come on in, you two. I've got everything ready."Alex nods, guiding me inside with a hand on my lower back that's feels more perfunctory than affectionate. Kelly gestures to the plush chairs in front of his massive desk."Have a seat. This won't take long."
We sit, and I shift in my chair, my stomach knotting. I glance at Alex, his profile hard and handsome as ever, and try again. "Alex, really, can I have a word? Just a minute?"
He waves it off, checking his watch. "Whatever it is, it can wait until after. Let's get this done."Kelly slides a stack of papers across the desk, the divorce documents crisp and final. "Here we go. Everything's in order. Alex, you first."Alex picks up the pen without hesitation, his signature flowing across the page in bold strokes. He pushes the packet toward me. "Your turn. Sign."I stare at the papers, my vision blurring. My heart races, aching like it's being squeezed in a vise. This isn't how it's supposed to end. I look up at him, pleading. "Alex, what I wanted to talk about . . . it's serious. You've been so cold this past week. I don't understand what's changed."He meets my gaze, his expression a cool detached mask of nonchalance. "That's because the contract ended two weeks ago, Dana. We're done. I just haven't had the time to wrap it up until now,’ he says in a flat tone, but then his face flushes red, a sudden anger creeping in. "You can go be with the man you truly love."I blink, confusion washing over me like a wave. "What? There's no one, Alex. I don't have anyone else."He shakes his head, his eyes narrowing, his anger blooming. "I know what I saw. Don't play games.""What you saw?” I ask, deeply worried, “What are you talking about?”"You're wasting time," he snaps, his tone is of irritation now, that nonchalance cracking at the edges. "I have other engagements." He turns to Kelly. "The party's still on tonight?"Kelly nods, looking a bit uncomfortable. "Yeah, all set. Eight o'clock at the club."Alex's phone buzzes. He answers it, listens for a second, then says, "Okay, baby. I'll be downstairs in a minute." He hangs up, stands abruptly, and heads for the door without another word to me.The door clicks shut behind him, and I sit there, my world tumbling. My chest heaves, tears pricking at my eyes. Why didn't I confess sooner? In the hallway, in the car on the way here, anywhere. But I've been so afraid. Alex is a billionaire, surrounded by luxury and power. What if he thinks I'm just after his money? That my love is as fake as our marriage started out to be? I love him for him: the way he laughs at my terrible jokes, the quiet nights where he holds me like I'm precious. But now it's too late, and regret crashes over me like a storm.Mutinous tears roll out of my eyes and I wipe them, turning to Kelly. "Does he . . . does he have a new girl already?"Shock widens his eyes. He leans forward. "Dana, are you . . . are you in love with him? For real?""Yes," I whisper, the word breaking free. "God, yes. I love him so much it hurts."Before Kelly can respond, the door opens again. Alex walks in, this time with a stunning, tall, brunette, dressed in a gorgeous red dress on his arm. "Kelly, this is Jodie. Jodie, my best friend and lawyer, Kelly Stanton."Jodie smiles brightly. "Nice to meet you." She turns to me. "And you must be Dana. Hello."My throat tightens up, emotion choking me. I manage a tiny "Hello," that comes out as a rasp.Alex glances at me, flaring irritation in his eyes. "What's holding up the signing? Let's finish this."Kelly stands quickly, motioning to Alex. "I've got it. Go on, I'll handle the rest."Alex nods curtly, escorts Jodie out, and the door shuts again leaving us in a deafening silence.Kelly sighs, dipping his hands into his pockets, shrugging helplessly. "You can see he's done, Dana. He’s moved on."I shake my head, tears streaming now. "I thought he loved me too. The way he looked at me, the things he said . . .""How could you think that?" Kelly asks gently, with a hint of pity. "This was a contract from the beginning. No strings attached. That's what you both agreed to.""But we . . ." I cut him off, my voice rising with desperation. "We made love. Two weeks ago. It wasn't just sex—Alex made love to me. He was tender, passionate, like I was everything to him. And now? I can't get him out of my soul. He's in every thought, every breath. I love him, Kelly. More than I've ever loved anyone."Kelly's jaw drops, his eyes going wide with genuine shock. He stares at me for a long moment, processing. Then, without a word, he bolts upright. "Stay right here."He rushes out of the office, leaving me alone with the papers, my heart a wreckage of hope and fear. What have I done? And what will happen now that the truth is out—too late, or just in time?Dana POV: Together Forever. It is the shortest walk of my life, yet every single step feels like dragging my feet through airless space.Alex walked back to his car over an hour ago. Then the sky opened up again, sending down a punishing sheet of blinding white snow. He has been sitting out here now for two days.I can't take it anymore. The wall I built around my heart over the last two years hasn't just cracked, it has shattered.I walk out of the building, wrapped in a black cardigan. It is almost ten o'clock at night. The street is dead, save for the howling wind. When I reach the driver’s side of the car I peer through the window.Through the orange glare of the overhead streetlights, I can see his silhouette. He is slouched into the seat, and leaning away to the side. The engine isn't running, which means the heater has been dead for hours.Oh, dear God. He must be freezing.I knock on the glass. The dark figure inside doesn't move. My heart stops. I knock significantly harder
Alex POV: Arnold Won't Snitch Arnold really does have a miserable cold. He sneezes, pulls a wad of toilet paper from a roll behind the counter and blows his big, reddened nose with a loud and wet honk.He looks up from his misery, his watery eyes shifts from the framed canvas on the wall back to my face. He says, "You make it sound like an auction sale when you say it like that, Mr. Logan."I shrug casually, trying to seem indifferent. "It's the fountain. I recognize it from a past holiday in Paris. You could say the painting holds a sentimental meaning for me. You know what I mean, don't you?"Arnold sighs, adjusting his apron. "I do, unfortunately. But I still can't sell it to you.""Why not?" I try harder. "Name your price, Arnold. I can write a check right now that will cover your lease for the next three years.""Because the woman who gave it to me wouldn't be very pleased if it's missing from that wall the next time she walks in here," Arnold says."She gave it to you?""Yes."
Dana POV: William Logan.I sit by the window, biting my lower lip as I stare down at the street below. I shake my head. The snowfall has upgraded into a punishing blizzard that blankets the street in thick layers of white, but Alex is still sitting inside that car.Wow.I turn my head slightly as a soft footstep sounds down the hall. Freida walks into the room. She isn't just my nurse. Over the last two years, she became my friend and confidante, and then ultimately, my ally in keeping my address a secret from the world I left behind. It was Freida who had cleverly invented the "Larry" ruse in the first place, a fictional boyfriend to put Alex or Charles off if they ever managed to track me down.Yesterday, Alex successfully found my apartment building. The Larry trick didn't work. Somehow, against all odds, Alex knows I am exactly where I am, and he has refused to leave."Is he still out there?" Freida asks, stepping up beside me.I nod slowly. "He went back to Arnold's diner again t
Alex POV: The Tulip Painting I hurry out of the apartment building, my breath plumes of steam in front of me. My face is burning hot with embarrassment, and disappointment. I pull my leather gloves back over my freezing hands and cross the snow packed road in long hurrying strides.I throw the rental car door open and jump into the driver's seat, bringing the biting winter chill with me.Randall turns to me instantly, his eyes wide with anticipation. "How did it go, Mr. Logan? Did you speak to her?"I look at him. He must see the defeat written or can't he? His excitement falls apart, his shoulders drop. The car's heater slowly begins to calm my speeding pulse. "She moved again, Randall."Randall shakes his head, his brow furrowing. "No. No, she didn't. I am sure of that, Mr. Logan."I turn my head slowly to look at him. "There is a different woman living inside that apartment right now. She’s Latina, a nurse, and she has a boyfriend named Larry. She has a young child too."Randall
Alex POV: Finding Dana Stanton was right about this guy. Randall Haynes is the kind of ghost you want on your payroll when you're hunting for someone who doesn't want to be found. He is a wiry small man who looks like he could completely blend into the brickwork of any city street.Through the frosted windshield of my rental car, I spot his lean silhouette across the park. I flash my high beams once and wave him over. I watch as the man trudges across the thick, unbroken snow.Randall jerks the door open and lets in a freezing swirl of winter air before slamming it shut. He rubs his gloved hands together, his small eyes scanning my face."Mr. Logan," he greets me with a slight accent. English or Australian, it's hard to tell through the biting chill. "Dreadful weather we're having, isn't it?""Nice to meet you, Randall," I say and offer a firm handshake."You look quite different from your photographs in the news, if you don't mind me saying.""It's the hair."I gesture vaguely at t
Dana POV: A Goodbye To Family AgainAt the airport, Hymar lets the car idle in the parking lot. He stares straight ahead for a long moment before speaking.I've been sitting in the car too, staring at the airport lounge, unable to open the door. "Lori told me she can't bring herself to face you again, Dana," he says.Travelers are bustling past with rolling suitcases, a world on the move. One that waits for no one.I look back at Hymar."Are you going to marry her?"He nods. "Yeah. We’ve been talking about officially moving in together next month."I nod slowly, a bittersweet taste on my tongue. Life is moving forward for everyone else. I look back out the window at the terminal. A small, desperate part of me just wants to sit perfectly still in this passenger seat forever. I want to delay the inevitable, hoping that if I sit here long enough, I might change my mind and go back home. But I can't sit here all day. Hymar has a life to get back to. My phone rings but I don't bother t
Dana POV: The Anniversary Is A Fraud The program begins proper just as I look away from Alex's fine face. I press my lips together, aware that a smile is on its way. Beside me, Eddie is doing a monotone about the idea he and my other brothers need funding for. And Jack is in the thick of it with
Alex POV: Alex Wants To Leave Jodie McGuire When I come out of the shower later in the evening, my phone is ringing. I called Kelly Stanton earlier, right after I got back from work. And again before I went into the bathroom. I wanted to talk to him before washing off and getting ready for bed. I
Dana POV: On A Private Jet With Her Ex HusbandThe tarmac heat shimmers under the late afternoon sun as we approach the jet. It looks like a big white pastel crayon, almost cartoonish against the gray concrete. I stop walking, forcing Alex to pause beside me."Is this all part of a plan to punish m
Dana POV: Alex Now Has Office NearbyI know how this scene must look like if I was the one standing at the door like Alex is doing in this moment, and seeing my ex wife with three guys who are apparently her brothers: It must remind him of the gangster way Jack and Eddie harangued him in Los Angel
