~Eliza~
“B-baby, what are you doing here?” Daniel asked breathlessly as he scrambled to pull up his trousers.
The smile died on my trembling lips as I watched my sister slowly pull down her skintight skirt. She smirked at me.
I had just entered Daniel’s office to share the most wonderful news, only to be faced with… this.
“Oh, look who finally decided to join the rest of us outside,” she snarked, and I stumbled back into the doorway.
“Shut up!” My husband hissed as he slowly approached me.
“D-Daniel, what is going on here?” My voice was hoarse and faint as my heart tripped in my chest.
“Oh, please! What do you think?” Isabella huffed, coming to stand beside my husband. “We were obviously fucking.”
My breath shuddered out of me at the confirmation of what I didn’t want to believe. My sister and my husband?
“Daniel, s-she’s lying, right?”
My husband of four years rolled his eyes and shrugged. “You have eyes, Eliza.”
“And you know what? This is as good a time as any,” he continued and snaked an arm around Isabella’s slender waist.
My wide eyes tracked the movement as shock and disbelief wound through me. Was this another nightmare? I dug my fingers into my palms, but nothing changed.
“In case you still haven’t figured it out, Isabella and I are in love,” he announced proudly, and she tittered wildly.
Oh, my God! This was not a dream!
“What are you saying, Daniel?” I demanded harshly, walking further into the room. “We are married for goodness’ sake!”
“How could you be—”
I couldn’t finish the sentence as pain spasmed in my stomach. I groaned and clutched my stomach while Isabella walked over to stand before me.
“You’re still as dumb as ever, Eliza,” she snorted. “Your dear husband is mine now.”
Through the pain lancing through my insides, I managed to whisper, “How long?”
Isabella opened her mouth, but Daniel cut her off. “That’s not important right now.”
“And I know you’re probably feeling hurt and all right now,” he said in a patronizing tone that set my teeth on edge, waving a dismissive hand in front of my face. “But you caused this.”
“It’s entirely your fault that I am in love with another woman.”
I blinked as a disbelieving gasp escaped me. “What are you even talking about?”
“You cheated on me with my own sister and somehow, it’s my fault?!”
Daniel tutted as if I were a disobedient child and wagged a finger at me. “After the car crash, it has become so fucking depressing to be around you.”
His lips twisted in a disgusted grimace that broke my heart even more. “You mean the car crash that took our baby from us?” My voice broke as tears burned in my eyes.
“Well, you just said our baby. It was ours, Eliza!” he snapped. “But all the time, you acted like it was just your loss.”
“What else was I supposed to do? Uh?”
His voice gentled slightly as he added, “I am a man with needs, Eliza, and you just don’t satisfy me.”
“B-but I… we—”
Isabella cut into my stammering. “B-b-but what, Eliza?” she mocked ruthlessly.
“The plain truth is that Daniel is madly obsessed with me, so you can just,” she finished by shooing me away with her perfectly manicured nails.
“You are so useless, you know that? You couldn’t even keep your baby and now, you lost your man too.”
“Do I need to remind you that the only reason we lost that baby was because of your stupidity?” Daniel asked, and my eyes snapped to him in disbelief.
Pain blossomed in my chest at their callous words, along with the cramping in my stomach. At least, I could understand Isabella’s wickedness since she has always hated me right from when we were kids.
But the man standing before me was a total stranger, nothing like the one who held me when I fell apart. I thought I had the perfect life, the perfect husband.
But oh, how terribly wrong I was.
“How could you say that to me, Daniel?” I cried, hating how pitiful I sounded.
These bastards didn’t deserve my tears. I shouldn’t waste any more time mourning the life that had obviously been a cruel lie all along.
“Actually, damn you!” I snarled even as my body shook. “Pack your shit and get the hell out of my company right this minute!”
There was silence for a second before the two of them burst into loud laughter, as if I had just said the funniest thing. Slowly, a shiver of foreboding trickled down my spine as I stared at them.
Still chuckling, Daniel straightened to look me right in the eyes. “Wake up, darling,” he drawled.
“This all belongs to me now,” he said, throwing his arms wide to encompass the luxurious space.
For the second time in less than twenty minutes, the wind was knocked out of me. “What?” I whispered. “This… this company is mine, Daniel.”
“Oh, not anymore, sweetheart,” he replied in the same patronising tone that made me long to wipe that stupid smirk off his face.
I stumbled on nothing as understanding crashed into me with full force. Before I could gather my scattered senses, Daniel continued speaking.
“By the way, I’m also divorcing you.”
Isabella let out a joyous squeal that barely penetrated the fog that had clouded my mind. Through a red haze, I watched her jump on Daniel and plant a wet, sloppy kiss on his mouth.
Bile rose to my throat and my stomach turned queasy as the ache became even more insistent. I grabbed the edge of the doorway to keep from falling flat on my face. I didn’t need any more humiliation than I already got.
When they finally parted with a loud pop, Daniel sneered, “Don’t even bother trying anything stupid, Lizzie darling. I have transferred everything we own into my name only.”
His lips pulled up in a wicked grin. “I got you good.” He turned and sauntered to plop down on his seat.
I opened my mouth to scream at him, but could only groan and bend over, clutching my stomach as the pain ramped up.
Through my groanings, I heard Daniel say, “Get in here.”
Then, Isabella bent to hiss in my ear, “I win again, sister.”
Then she stepped back and joined Damien behind the desk. Within minutes, two security men burst into the office.
“Take her away and don’t ever let her into this building again,” Daniel ordered curtly, and they grabbed my arms.
“You will pay for this, Daniel!” I raged, struggling as best as I could with the ache in my stomach.
But all I got in return was the mocking laughter from Daniel and Isabella. After a moment, I gave up and just went along as the men dragged me away.
They unceremoniously dumped me on the pavement outside the company I had handed to my husband with my own hands and walked inside.
I lay on the floor, curled up as black spots dotted my vision. Slowly, the small pregnancy test stick I had been hiding in my right palm dropped onto the floor.
The last thing I saw before darkness mercifully took over was the two lines on the stick.
~Atlas~Why am I even here?I could literally just go home. After all, there were only so many all-nighters I could pull at the office before my staff started to give me curious side looks. So it only made sense to go home.Or at least, that was the excuse I tried to make myself believe. The other reason could be that I couldn’t bring myself to stay away from the woman in my house any longer. And I absolutely refuse to accept that. With a small huff, I jerked up, shut my laptop and snatched my jacket from the back of my seat. Shrugging it on, I strode to the door and yanked it open.My secretary, Jane, looked up, startled and unable to hide her shock.“S-sir, you’re leaving?” she asked in a faint voice.Ordinarily, her probing would piss me off, but for some reason, I wasn’t the least bit affected.“Yes,” I said shortly without pausing. “I’m going home.”Gosh! It felt good to say that out loud. And after spending almost four weeks crashing on the spare couch in my office, my back was
~Eliza~“I’m sorry, but there’s still no news on your grandmother’s whereabouts.”Hearing the private investigator’s apologetic voice, I felt the tiny sliver of hope I still had left start to dim.It had been one week since he started working to locate where my grandmother was and there hadn’t been any positive update. And the last thing I wanted was to make this any more public than it already was. My major concern was that Daniel would somehow hear about this and go after her instead. And he would probably find her since he had more money and resources to expend. I sighed and wearily said, “Fine, you can keep me updated when you do find her.”The investigator murmured something and I ended the call, proceeding to stare into space.“If,” the voice whispered in my ear and I briefly closed my eyes, refusing to imagine or even consider the possibility that my grandmother would never be found.Because if anything, it would mean I never got back my mother’s company and Daniel won.Yeah,
~Eliza~I blinked, squinting my eyes as if that would make me see her better. My eyesight was perfect, but I couldn't believe how much she had changed.Aria was one of Atlas' friends back then. I knew her as a quiet, blond-haired woman. She never used to say much and seemed to prefer being on the edge of the friendship. After making some attempt to get close to her like the rest of his Atlas' friends, I gave up when I was met with stony silence. I actually used to think she disliked me or something, but Atlas had said that was just the way she preferred to be.This woman standing before me right now with bright eyes and a runway-worthy smile was nothing like the person I met six years ago.“Wow,” I said after several seconds of silence had passed.Aria grinned at me and bobbed her head up and down. “I know, right!”“It's been quite the change, so I don't expect you to immediately know who I was, but really,” she rolled her eyes and laughed lightly.I chuckled too, trying my best not t
~Eliza~I had been tossing in bed restlessly for about ten minutes now.It was admittedly still too early to sleep, but I couldn’t bear the silence of the house anymore. My own thoughts seemed too loud and they were starting to suffocate me.Or maybe it was just my mind trying to keep me from experiencing another nightmare. It always started the same way.I would be in a car, driving down an empty highway, and suddenly, a car would ram into mine out of nowhere. Then nauseating pain would cramp my stomach and when I looked down, I would see blood.Somehow, in the nightmares, I never seemed to be able to move and save myself from the wreck. It was as if something or someone was holding me back. Then I would wake up, the pillow already wet with my tears. They were becoming more frequent now, and I knew the loss I just suffered triggered them. The first few months after the crash were the worst.I would jerk awake in a cold sweat, screaming for help to save a baby that was already gone. I
~Atlas~I turned my neck to the side to ease the cramp. But the tension in my shoulders stubbornly remained. I dropped my pen and removed my glasses before rubbing my burning eyes.I was more than tired. I was darned exhausted. It was evening already and almost everyone had left. For a brief moment, the thought of going home too crossed my mind, like it had done at least a hundred times since I got married to Eliza. And just like before, I immediately discarded the idea before it could take root. Because I knew that going home would be the most dangerous thing I had ever done.My house was the last place I could afford to be right now. Not when Eliza was there, in my house, in my bed.I closed my eyes and heaved a breath as my mind drifted to the day we got married. The memory of her wide, scared eyes was burned into my brain as surely as the way her lips had parted when she said the words, ‘I do.’Only after the registrar pronounced us as husband and wife did my heart settle into a m
~Eliza~It only took a few hours for my excitement to deflate.I had thought that I had figured out a way to get my company back from Daniel. My idea had been to reach out to my grandmother and ask her to sell me her shares in the company.Granted that I had no idea where she was since my father had basically alienated me from my mother’s side of the family. She might even decline helping me at all.Still, it was worth a try. And try, I had, until my eyes turned blurry from staring at the laptop’s screen for too long.Using the little information I could remember from eavesdropping on my dad’s conversation in his study, I searched online. If I could get even the slightest hint of her address, I could work on it and figure out her exact location. It had been at least four hours since I first started and I wouldn’t have minded at all if I found anything useful, but I hadn't.With a groan, I dropped my head on the table and dragged a hand through my hair. At this point, it was starting t
~Eliza~Tingles spread from my head to my toes.I kept my eyes closed for a moment longer, trying to keep reality from rushing back in, but it was useless. Slowly, I opened my eyes. The ceiling above me was high and cream-coloured, with a pale light fixture at its centre. I turned my head and notic
~Eliza~I still couldn’t believe it.Twisting my simple gold band on my finger, my heart thudded against my ribcage as it sank in that I was actually married. For the second time. To my ex-boyfriend. Who was also my ex-husband’s uncle. If the evidence weren’t staring me right in the eye this moment
~Atlas~After six long years, she was finally back in my life. Eliza Monroe.I was close enough to touch her, but now, she was unconscious on a hospital bed. And my nephew put her there. My hands curled into fists at my sides and I hated the feeling of helplessness curling through me.“What the hel
~Eliza~“I didn't realize you found the idea of marrying me so distasteful, Eliza,” Atlas bit out, his gaze sharpening on me.“Well, for one, you are Daniel’s uncle,” I stated, widening my eyes at him incredulously. “What—”“Step uncle.”“will everyone think?” I finished determinedly.“Why do you c
