Zane was battling a storm of emotions within.

Did he still need paperwork to prove that the woman seated as far away from him as she possibly could was Jay?

Her voice… She was Jay.

Did she really think he wouldn’t recognize her? Or did she forget that once, when he was blind, all that made him familiar to her was her voice? That her voice was the only thing that separated her from literally everything else, and thus it was etched in his very soul.

Her voice, even when mixed with other voices in the background, would stand out. That’s how familiar she sounded to him.

“Did you need something from me?” he asked.

And he didn’t miss how she flinched at such a simple question. It only confirmed to him further that Jade was Jay.

She was the girl who had taken care of him for a whole year. The girl who kept teasing him that he would have to pay her back for all her expenses.

She was the girl who promised she would be there when he opened his eyes again — only to break that promise and disappear without a trace.

“Y-yes, Mr. Frost,” she stammered, her voice small and nervous. “I-I need your signature, Sir.”

She extended the folder she had been clutching tightly, her fingers trembling.

Zane had planned to corner her like this.

When he saw the surveillance footage from her workstation, his intention had been to talk to Jade about her daughter — not to confirm if she was Jay.

But when she spoke inside the elevator, he had forgotten about everything else.

The sound of her voice had thrown him completely off balance. It was her — there was no mistaking it.

Jay had known who he really was.

He couldn’t understand why she hadn’t reached out to him the moment she arrived at his company.

But whatever her reasons might be, the way she flinched when he spoke, the way she avoided looking at him—she didn’t want to be found. She had made her choice, and he had to respect it, no matter how much it hurt.

Maybe fate hadn’t brought them back together to start over. Maybe it was only giving him the chance to repay her kindness and finally let her go.

Besides, he wasn’t the same man who had once clung so desperately to the memory of her voice. What he felt for Jay had been real, but it belonged to a different time, a different version of himself.

Zane knew he would always be grateful to Jay for saving him when he was lost. But he didn’t need her to move forward anymore.

Whatever was left unfinished between them, he would settle it with the respect she deserved—and then he would let her go, just as she had let him go long ago.

‘He sure is taking his time,’ Jade thought anxiously.

It was just a single-page document that required his signature, yet he had been reading it for several minutes — as if he never intended to finish or even sign it.

“Mr. Frost, is there a problem with the document?” she finally asked, her voice soft but steady. Her nervousness had subsided ever so slightly.

Besides, Zane didn’t seem like he would lash out at her anytime soon. It wasn’t even her document. If there was something wrong, she could just collect it and return it to Ms. Stewart. Simple, right?

Maybe, she thought, she could even ask him to pull over so she could go back to the office.

Zane merely gave a short “hmn” sound before his pen finally started scribbling on the paper.

Jade’s eyes widened in shock as she watched him not just sign — but cross out words and make corrections.

Moments later, the once neat document looked more like a scratch paper, riddled with notes and edits.

Finally, he closed the folder and handed it back to her.

“Tell Ms. Stewart to see me in my office,” he said, his tone curt.

‘He was scary,’ she thought.

Jade awkwardly accepted the folder. “Then, may I return to the office now, Mr. Frost?” she asked hopefully.

But he didn’t answer.

She waited a moment longer before resigning herself to silence.

Sighing quietly, she shifted farther back into her seat and gazed out of the window.

Worry washed over her. She didn’t even have her phone with her — how would she inform Mireia to look out for Zia?

Such a bad day to bring Zia to work today.

Then again, wasn’t she seated right beside Zane now?

But it wasn’t like she could just tell him who she truly was. Besides, she had made a decision long ago — to never let their past hold him back. Not that she even had the right.

Zane Frost had a bright future ahead of him.

Tomorrow, he would be engaged to his childhood sweetheart, Catherine White. Jade knew all about them, of course — she had researched his life, which wasn’t exactly private, especially when it came to Catherine.

They were the perfect match. Before Zane had even spent a year with her, Catherine had already been a constant in his life.

Jade didn’t want to compete with that. She never had. The battle was already lost, even before it had begun.

So, really, everything was fine. Zane didn’t need to know who she was anymore.

Most importantly, there had never been anything between them other than friendship.

Sure, Jade had fallen for him — deeply, hopelessly. But that was all. A one-sided love. Nothing more.

Jade was dragged to the CEO’s meeting. Ryan and her stayed beside Zane. But while Ryan occasionally took part, Jade was tasked to take care of their food for lunch.

She had no idea what to order. But when presented with the menu, she chose everything that she remembered he liked back then.

“Thanks, no peanuts, please.” She told the waitress. Of course, she took note of his allergy to peanuts too. She couldn’t risk him eating even a little of that.

Jade was unaware how that simple gesture of her made Zane feel.

“Uncle Karter, do you like my mommy?” Zia asked out of the blue while they were having dinner.Karter had joined them earlier, and so had Catherine. Now, the six of them—Helena, Zia, Jade, Zane, Karter, and Catherine—were gathered around the table for what turned out to be an impromptu feast, one that Jade had absolutely no idea was coming.Karter was already there when she got home from work, chatting animatedly with Helena. It was Helena who suddenly had the idea to prepare a lavish dinner, her eyes gleaming with excitement. She immediately summoned both Zane and Catherine to join.“Zia, don’t interrupt when adults are talking,” Jade said firmly, glancing at her daughter. “It’s not polite.”Besides, the question had caught her off guard and she felt its implications hanging in the air like a spotlight suddenly cast on her.“I like your mommy. Do you want me to become your daddy?” Karter replied anyway, a teasing smile on his face.Zia nodded eagerly, her little face lighting up, whi

“Jade, there’s a delivery for you,” Mireia called her.Engrossed with her work, she just told her friend to receive it for her.“Hey, since when did you have an admirer?” Mireia teased, placing the bouquet of red roses on her desk with a playful grin. “Do you have a suitor?”Jade was stunned for a moment, blinking at the flowers. But before she could check for a card, Mireia beat her to it.“Thanks for the dinner last night, beautiful. —Karter.”“Reia, stop it!” She snatched the card, her cheeks warming with embarrassment.“You went on a date last night?” Mireia’s eyes widened with delight. Before Jade could answer, her phone rang, saving her temporarily from the interrogation.“Hey, did you receive the flowers?” Karter’s voice filled her ears, cheerful and easy.“I did. I wanted to thank you, but really, this is too much to say thanks for dinner. Didn’t you already pay for everything we ate?” She pressed her fingers on her temple, flustered.Around her, Mireia and the rest of the tea

Jade waited for several minutes, but Zane didn’t say anything. She sat quietly, wondering what was so important that he had asked to see her.“Mr. Frost, did I do something wrong?” she finally asked, her voice soft but nervous. As usual, he had asked her to come to his office after all the employees had gone for the day.Instead of answering, he glanced at his wristwatch. “Let’s just talk on the way home. Ride with me today.”Jade frowned, surprised. “Okay?”Zane called Ryan and told him to leave ahead—he would drive himself today.Jade couldn’t help but wonder. Whatever this was about, it must be serious—serious enough that even his assistant wasn’t allowed to hear it.But even with just the two of them in the quiet space of his car, Zane still said nothing. The silence stretched between them.“Mr. Frost,” Jade said, her voice unsteady, “I’m starting to think you’re going to ask me to leave Zia.”If that was what he was about to say… What would she do? Would she plead?“What? No,” Za

Zane had watched Jade’s reaction closely. It was obvious she had wanted to tell him he was wrong.Well, that was bold of her, even daring to ask if he had found "her" yet.Zane had almost said yes. But just to test her reaction and maybe to infuriate her a little, he lied, saying he had stopped looking and made up a story about his watch.Jade was naive, but he was sure she still kept that watch. Because if she had ever sold it, he would have known. He had been waiting for that moment — waiting for the watch to surface so he could track Jay down. But either she didn’t realize the broken watch was still worth a fortune, or she simply wanted to keep it as a remembrance. The latter always warmed his heart. But still, part of him had hoped she sold it when Zaira needed money. Then again, she didn’t know.Besides, he had already investigated everything based on her story. She hadn't lied. Instead, he had uncovered even more heart-wrenching truths about the sacrifices she had made for his s

“Jade, let’s swim together,” Catherine invited warmly.Zane had volunteered to walk Betty out, while Grandma said she would take care of Zia. So it was just Jade and Catherine left by the pool.“Ms. White, I don’t know how to swim,” Jade admitted.Earlier, it had been painful to watch Zane and Catherine being sweet with each other in the water. But what could Jade do? This was her destiny — to silently watch the man she loved in the arms of the woman he liked.“Then I’ll teach you! Come on!” Catherine said brightly.“Ms. White!” Jade cried out when, all of a sudden, she fell into the water.Catherine had jumped in with her.“Jade, don’t panic! Jade!” she could hear Catherine’s voice urging her.How could she not panic? She struggled helplessly, her limbs flailing in the deep water. Catherine had pushed her into the deeper end of the pool — and she truly didn't know how to swim.“I’ve got you, okay? Stop moving!” Catherine shouted.Jade heard her voice, but it already sounded distant.

Tonight’s celebration was only for Frost's closest family friends—the privileged few who had access to the powerful Frost family.Zia was warmly welcomed, as expected. She was, after all, a Frost by blood—the little princess of the family.Meanwhile, Jade was quietly cast aside. She didn’t complain and stayed in the background. Tonight, besides Zia, the real stars were Catherine and Zane. Some guests even suggested that Zia could consider them as her parents, giving her a proper mother and father figure as she grew up.It didn’t sit well with Jade, but deep inside, she agreed. She might be Zia’s mother figure, but she couldn't give her a father figure. Before sadness could completely engulf her, Jade retreated to the kitchen and busied herself helping the maids. Maybe that’s where she truly belonged—among the people who served, not among those who were rich and powerful. She was engrossed in washing dishes and joking with the servers when Zane suddenly appeared in the kitchen, his exp
