It was already the weekend. Jade stared sadly at Zane’s broken watch, the only thing she had kept from him over the past five years. It was all she had as a remembrance of him.

She thought she could watch his engagement and feel nothing. She thought she had prepared herself enough to accept that he now belonged to someone else. But after yesterday’s encounter, Jade realized she was not completely immune to the pain.

The engagement, though limited to the elite, had been open to FII’s employees. Mireia had attended. Almost all her colleagues had attended.

But not Jade. She had chosen to stay away, unwilling to hurt herself even more. Still, deep inside, she was truly happy for Zane. She bore no bitterness over his engagement. She didn’t have the right to feel otherwise anyway.

Even so, her tears still found their way down her cheeks. It was a good thing Zia had gone to bed early. She didn’t have to explain to her daughter why she was crying.

Jade was about to sleep herself when she heard a gentle knock at the door. She frowned. It was already past seven in the evening. She quickly put on something decent and walked toward the door to check who it could be.

"Mr. Smith?" she said, surprised to see Zane’s assistant standing there.

"Good evening, Ms. Collins," Ryan greeted politely. "May I have a word with you?"

"Yes, of course," she said, opening the door wider to let him in. "What brings you here at this time, Mr. Smith?"

"Is your daughter already asleep?" Ryan asked.

Jade frowned deeper in confusion. "Yes, she is. Why do you ask? Please, have a seat. Would you like some coffee?"

"Thank you, but there’s no need," Ryan declined. "I’m here on Mr. Frost’s behalf."

"I don’t understand," she said as she sat down across from him, even more puzzled. "Mr. Smith, what do you mean? Isn’t it Mr. Frost’s engagement tonight?"

Ryan didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he pulled an envelope from his bag and took out a photo, handing it to her.

"Do you recognize the child in this picture?"

Jade’s hands trembled slightly as she took the photo. The little girl in it looked so much like Zia.

"N-no..." she stammered, shaking her head. At that moment, she already wanted to ask Ryan to leave. But courtesy kept her seated.

"Her name is Zaira Frost," Ryan said. "Mr. Frost’s younger sister. She was kidnapped when she was five years old and was never found again."

"Why are you telling me this, Mr. Smith? I have nothing to do with the Frost family..."

Five years ago, when she had the chance, she chose to walk away from Zane.

"Ms. Collins," Ryan pressed gently, "do you know Zaira Frost?"

She knew someone named Zaira. But she was not a Frost.

Before she could answer, Zia’s soft voice interrupted them.

"Mommy?" Zia had woken up and was rubbing her sleepy eyes.

"N-no," Jade said quickly, standing up. "I’m sorry, Mr. Smith, but I have to ask you to leave now."

Ryan stood up, respecting her wish. "Of course. I’ll come back, Ms. Collins. Mr. Frost would certainly appreciate your help with this matter."

She only nodded, eager to send him away. Only after Ryan had left did Jade finally allow herself to breathe.

"Who was that man, Mommy?" Zia asked, her voice small and drowsy.

"Just someone from Mommy’s work," Jade said, crouching down to pick her up. "Come on, sweetie. Let’s get you back to bed."

"Okay, Mommy."

When Zia had fallen back asleep, Jade finally let her tears fall freely again. This time, it wasn’t about her lost love. This time, it was fear. Fear of losing her daughter. Zia, who was Zaira’s daughter.

Zaira had been her best friend. But she wasn’t from the Frost family. She was Zaira Taylor.

They had grown up together in the orphanage, both of them unlucky enough never to be adopted until they were old enough to move out on their own. But even after they left, life had separated them. When Jade was taking care of Zane during those difficult times, Zaira had already been out of her reach. She only saw her again two years later — and by then, Zaira was already pregnant with Zia.

Zaira hadn’t survived childbirth, leaving her newborn daughter behind. Without hesitation, Zia became Jade’s baby. She raised her with everything she had, giving her all the love she could possibly offer.

Who would have thought that Zaira had been Zane’s sister all along?

Jade didn’t need any more proof. That old photo Ryan had shown her said it all. She remembered perfectly how Zaira looked when they were kids. There was no denying it.

Her silent tears soon turned into uncontrollable sobs.

She cried hard, the fear and heartbreak crushing her chest. She knew the life she could offer Zia — simple, modest, full of love, but limited. Nothing like the life the Frost family could give.

If Zia truly belonged to the Frosts, and Jade refused to give her back, would that make her selfish? Would it mean she was denying her daughter a better life?

But if she handed Zia over to them... would that mean losing her completely?

Over the rest of the weekend, Jade had not gotten any sleep at all. By Monday, she was close to resembling a zombie.

“Hey, you alright?” Mireia asked.

She only smiled a little.

“The engagement was so fun! Mr. Frost and Ms. White, they really are a match made in heaven!” Her friend shared. “You should have attended too. Oh it was such a privilege to be part of their celebration!”

To which Jade only smiled too.

“Jade, what’s wrong?” Mireia toned down a bit.

“Nothing,” she sat on her chair and turned her computer on.

Jade wondered what she was still doing there. Did she really want another confrontation about Zia?

What if the Frosts would force her to give Zia back to them?

“Come on, tell me.”

“It’s nothing, really. Don’t mind me, Reia.”

Before that day ended, Jade once again found herself in Zane’s presence.

He had summoned her to his office when most of the employees had left.

“I’m going straight to the point, Ms. Collins. You should know that I am capable of finding out the truth myself. But for the last time, I wanted to ask you. Do you know my sister?”

Jade’s eyes stung.

“Uncle Karter, do you like my mommy?” Zia asked out of the blue while they were having dinner.Karter had joined them earlier, and so had Catherine. Now, the six of them—Helena, Zia, Jade, Zane, Karter, and Catherine—were gathered around the table for what turned out to be an impromptu feast, one that Jade had absolutely no idea was coming.Karter was already there when she got home from work, chatting animatedly with Helena. It was Helena who suddenly had the idea to prepare a lavish dinner, her eyes gleaming with excitement. She immediately summoned both Zane and Catherine to join.“Zia, don’t interrupt when adults are talking,” Jade said firmly, glancing at her daughter. “It’s not polite.”Besides, the question had caught her off guard and she felt its implications hanging in the air like a spotlight suddenly cast on her.“I like your mommy. Do you want me to become your daddy?” Karter replied anyway, a teasing smile on his face.Zia nodded eagerly, her little face lighting up, whi

“Jade, there’s a delivery for you,” Mireia called her.Engrossed with her work, she just told her friend to receive it for her.“Hey, since when did you have an admirer?” Mireia teased, placing the bouquet of red roses on her desk with a playful grin. “Do you have a suitor?”Jade was stunned for a moment, blinking at the flowers. But before she could check for a card, Mireia beat her to it.“Thanks for the dinner last night, beautiful. —Karter.”“Reia, stop it!” She snatched the card, her cheeks warming with embarrassment.“You went on a date last night?” Mireia’s eyes widened with delight. Before Jade could answer, her phone rang, saving her temporarily from the interrogation.“Hey, did you receive the flowers?” Karter’s voice filled her ears, cheerful and easy.“I did. I wanted to thank you, but really, this is too much to say thanks for dinner. Didn’t you already pay for everything we ate?” She pressed her fingers on her temple, flustered.Around her, Mireia and the rest of the tea

Jade waited for several minutes, but Zane didn’t say anything. She sat quietly, wondering what was so important that he had asked to see her.“Mr. Frost, did I do something wrong?” she finally asked, her voice soft but nervous. As usual, he had asked her to come to his office after all the employees had gone for the day.Instead of answering, he glanced at his wristwatch. “Let’s just talk on the way home. Ride with me today.”Jade frowned, surprised. “Okay?”Zane called Ryan and told him to leave ahead—he would drive himself today.Jade couldn’t help but wonder. Whatever this was about, it must be serious—serious enough that even his assistant wasn’t allowed to hear it.But even with just the two of them in the quiet space of his car, Zane still said nothing. The silence stretched between them.“Mr. Frost,” Jade said, her voice unsteady, “I’m starting to think you’re going to ask me to leave Zia.”If that was what he was about to say… What would she do? Would she plead?“What? No,” Za

Zane had watched Jade’s reaction closely. It was obvious she had wanted to tell him he was wrong.Well, that was bold of her, even daring to ask if he had found "her" yet.Zane had almost said yes. But just to test her reaction and maybe to infuriate her a little, he lied, saying he had stopped looking and made up a story about his watch.Jade was naive, but he was sure she still kept that watch. Because if she had ever sold it, he would have known. He had been waiting for that moment — waiting for the watch to surface so he could track Jay down. But either she didn’t realize the broken watch was still worth a fortune, or she simply wanted to keep it as a remembrance. The latter always warmed his heart. But still, part of him had hoped she sold it when Zaira needed money. Then again, she didn’t know.Besides, he had already investigated everything based on her story. She hadn't lied. Instead, he had uncovered even more heart-wrenching truths about the sacrifices she had made for his s

“Jade, let’s swim together,” Catherine invited warmly.Zane had volunteered to walk Betty out, while Grandma said she would take care of Zia. So it was just Jade and Catherine left by the pool.“Ms. White, I don’t know how to swim,” Jade admitted.Earlier, it had been painful to watch Zane and Catherine being sweet with each other in the water. But what could Jade do? This was her destiny — to silently watch the man she loved in the arms of the woman he liked.“Then I’ll teach you! Come on!” Catherine said brightly.“Ms. White!” Jade cried out when, all of a sudden, she fell into the water.Catherine had jumped in with her.“Jade, don’t panic! Jade!” she could hear Catherine’s voice urging her.How could she not panic? She struggled helplessly, her limbs flailing in the deep water. Catherine had pushed her into the deeper end of the pool — and she truly didn't know how to swim.“I’ve got you, okay? Stop moving!” Catherine shouted.Jade heard her voice, but it already sounded distant.

Tonight’s celebration was only for Frost's closest family friends—the privileged few who had access to the powerful Frost family.Zia was warmly welcomed, as expected. She was, after all, a Frost by blood—the little princess of the family.Meanwhile, Jade was quietly cast aside. She didn’t complain and stayed in the background. Tonight, besides Zia, the real stars were Catherine and Zane. Some guests even suggested that Zia could consider them as her parents, giving her a proper mother and father figure as she grew up.It didn’t sit well with Jade, but deep inside, she agreed. She might be Zia’s mother figure, but she couldn't give her a father figure. Before sadness could completely engulf her, Jade retreated to the kitchen and busied herself helping the maids. Maybe that’s where she truly belonged—among the people who served, not among those who were rich and powerful. She was engrossed in washing dishes and joking with the servers when Zane suddenly appeared in the kitchen, his exp
