Kael POV

The elevator ride down was a blur of boots and matte-black gear. The enforcer holding my hood threw me onto the metal floor, the device on his belt pulsing with a green light that made the fire in my veins feel heavy. Every muscle turned to lead; I couldn't even lift my chin.

"Is the Sovereign following?" one muffled voice asked from behind a mask.

"No," the leader replied, checking his wrist screen. "The ice block he created locked down the penthouse corridor. It’ll take his team ten m

Lucien POVThe Living City was alive and breathing. The walls made of quartz had a soft amber glow that went in and out like Kael's heartbeat. I carried him through the amber doors. My shoulder hurt where the statue had hit me. I did not care. Kael's body was limp against my chest. His skin was cold like mountain stone."Julian," I said.Julian was at my side. He had a flashlight. The beam cut through the quiet air."My lord?" he asked."Find a place for Kael to rest. He is very sick."Julian looked around. Then, he pointed to a building made of white quartz with doors made of solid amber."The central arch. It looks like a place where people can get help when they are sick."Rin was trying to keep up with us. He had a bag, and he was holding it tight."Kael is in shock, Lucien. If his heart does not get better, it will hurt his brain. We need to get him warm."I did not say anything. I pushed the amber doors open with my shoulder. The room smelled like dried flowers and something els

Kael POVThe hall just disappeared. It was like the whole room vanished into the air. The statues started moving. They made this really loud noise, like the sound of the earth moving. They had stone swords that whistled through the air and made these arcs of purple fire in the darkness.Lucien was moving fast. I could barely see him. He was like a blur with a sword, and every time he blocked a hit from the statues, it made sparks fly everywhere. He was fighting with this wild style, and his back was pressed up against mine. I could feel the heat coming from his skin. It was like he was ready to pounce."Get behind the dais!" Lucien yelled. He pushed me towards the back of the hall. This huge stone warrior was looming over us, and its face was a blank stone slab. It swung this mace down and smashed the marble floor where I was standing just a second before. I scrambled backward. My hands were scraping against the cold stone."Lucien!" I screamed. He was surrounded by five of these warr

Kael POVThe city gates thudded shut behind us, sealing the Crypt in suffocating silence. We stood in a corridor of bone-white marble, lined with statues stretching into the dark. No wind. No rot. Only the hollow rhythmic thud of our boots against the stone. As we passed the first pair of statues—a King and a Consort—a low, grinding moan echoed through the floorboards. The earth groaned beneath us.Then, the impossible happened.Hundreds of statues tilted forward in unison. Every stone chin dipped toward the floor. They were bowing.I stopped, my breath hitching. "Julian, do you see that?"Julian stood motionless, his scanner hovering over a king's face. He didn't turn. "In all the records, there's no mention of the statues reacting to anyone. Not even the Sovereigns.""Why now?" Rin’s voice cracked. He hugged his medical bag to his chest. "Why him?""I don't know," Julian whispered. The silver rings in my eyes pulsed, a rhythmic throb that matched the heartbeat of the hall. I felt wa

Lucien POVThe sanctuary behind us sealed with a screech. Dust filled the air, covering our shoulders in a layer of gray powder. I didn't wait for the stone to stop moving. I picked Kael up, his weight still too light against my chest, and headed into the dark, changing corridor.Kael's hands clenched into fists against my shirt."Let me down. I can walk."I kept walking. My boots hit the stone floor with a dull sound."You fell twice.""I'm still okay.""No."Rin jumped over a pile of rubble behind us, his medical bag hitting his hip. He looked tired, his face pale under the light of Julian's torch."He's right. You're being stubborn."Julian didn't look back. He kept his eyes on the scanner, moving carefully."My lord is being efficient."Rin grunted, dodging a rock."Robot."Julian kept his eyes forward."Human."The corridor creaked. The walls started moving, stone sliding over stone like teeth closing. Passageways shut while new ones opened in the darkness. Ancient symbols lit up

Kael POVThe violent purple light disappeared. The grand sanctuary became quiet again. The mechanical click from the frame stopped.I lay flat on my back on the stone floor. My chest rose and fell as I stared at the ceiling. My eyes hurt from the flash. Bright spots floated across my vision, making the carved arches look like they were melting. The heavy feeling in my lungs faded into a dull ache, and the cold numbness beneath my skin slowly retreated until it settled back into the lines on my wrist."Kael! Don't close your eyes. Look at me!" Rin's voice echoed through the hall. His hands grabbed my shoulders and pulled me upright, my back hitting the marble dais. He was shaking, his wide eyes searching my face."I'm... here," I coughed, the dry air scraping my throat as I pushed his hands away. My fingers were trembling so badly I could barely make a fist. "Stop shaking me, Rin. I'm not broken.""Your eyes..." Rin whispered, stepping back and pulling a small torch from his medical ba

Kael POVI heard a roar coming from the service shaft. It did not sound like any living thing. The sound was heavy and wet, making the iron bolts in the masonry rattle. I felt the vibration through my boots and into my teeth. The oily water in the drainage pipe rippled as claws scraped above us.The stale air carried the smell of rust and mold, making every breath feel heavier inside the narrow passage."Julian, go to the landing," Lucien ordered. He did not let me go. His fingers tightened around my waist like iron bands, pulling me closer to his chest. "Rin, stay behind my assistant.""I will not do that." Rin's voice was shaking. I heard the sound of his clinic syringe loading. "I am not going to use you as a shield, Kael.""You will do what you are told." Julian's voice remained calm. I could not see his face, but I heard the sound of his sidearm loading a round. "If that creature hurts you, it will ruin our retreat path.""I do not care about your plans." Rin took another step fo
