Chapter 1

Author: Susie's Fish
The moment my older sister, Nina Farro, laid out her conditions, Tristan Conte's expression darkened.

The rest of the Farro family were so terrified that they didn't dare to speak a single word.

Put nicely, Nina was just trying to reclaim her freedom and refusing to be reduced to a bargaining chip in a marriage alliance.

But the reality was that she was openly challenging the Conte family and humiliating Tristan in public.

Tristan snorted out loud.

"You can't force something that isn't meant to be, huh? If that's the case, Mr. Farro, the Yak City deal is off."

The Farro family had a cash shortage and was waiting for the Conte family's funds to keep them afloat.

They were the ones who now needed the Conte family's help. My father, Saul Farro, was so anxious that sweat poured down his face.

"Nina just hasn't come around yet. Please don't hold it against her. She's always been stubborn. Just give me a few days to persuade her to say yes."

Tristan's voice turned cold.

"Look at her attitude. Will she really change her mind a few days later? Or have you already found another investor? Is that why you think you can disregard the Conte family?

"Nina Farro, think about it carefully. Are you sure you want to call this marriage arrangement off?"

Nina pushed the door to the chapel open and stood beside the door.

She looked graceful, dressed in simple linen, with only light makeup on her face.

Her voice was soft but determined, her gaze shining with indifference.

"Mr. Conte, I believe I've made myself clear. As long as you agree to the three conditions I laid out, I'll marry you. Otherwise, I'd rather spend the rest of my life praying in peace and solitude than go against my own wishes and suffer through a marriage that brings me no peace."

Tristan gave a sudden laugh, his voice cold enough to send a shiver down one's spine.

"Suffer? I wonder if you will still have the luxury of sitting here praying when the day comes that the Farro family goes bankrupt and falls apart."

The words "goes bankrupt and falls apart" hit everyone in the Farro family like a blow.

They couldn't help but feel a chill of fear.

Nina's mother, Celeste Silvi, burst into tears and begged, "Nina, I know this isn't what you want, but think about your dad and me!"

Saul was already at his wit's end. He had no choice but to swallow his pride and beg, "Please, Nina. Just say yes for now."

Nina merely stuck her chin up and said nothing.

Tristan's gaze grew sharper as anger tore through him.

Everyone in the Farro family held their breath, yet Nina still insisted on pursuing her own freedom and refused to become a sacrifice for a family alliance.

I didn't understand why she was so determined, or why she was willing to drag the entire Farro family down with her.

All I knew was that I didn't want to see the Farro family fall.

Mom was still in the hospital waiting for money to proceed with her surgery.

I dashed forward and stood in front of Tristan, my voice trembling but firm as I said, "Mr. Conte, if you don't mind, I'm willing to marry you!"

The moment I said those words, the entire room fell silent.

Tristan gazed at me in confusion. "Who are you?"

Before I could explain, Celeste quickly cut in, "Mr. Conte, I'm embarrassed to say this, but her name is Stella Farro. She is the illegitimate daughter my husband had when he was young and foolish."

She deliberately stressed the words "illegitimate daughter", as though she wanted to make sure Tristan heard every single word.

Nina finally came back to her senses and looked at me with sympathy.

"What are you doing? A woman doesn't have to define her life through marriage. Freedom matters more. Don't make a rash decision just because you're trying to help. I won't stand by and watch you walk into a marriage I know is wrong, only to suffer because of me."

Tristan shot Nina a pointed look.

"Suffer? So this is how the Farro family views the marriage alliance with my family."

The morning after our wedding, I got up early and went to pay my respects to Teresa. As I made my way back, I noticed the person who had taken Nina to St. Abbie Convent the day before standing outside.I listened to him while Lisa massaged my sore, aching lower back. "After Nina was sent to St. Abbie Convent yesterday, she cried for a long time and threw a tantrum. She even snapped two rosaries at the convent. Mr. Conte has already sent someone to the Farro family to seek compensation. But Mrs. Farro did visit Nina at the convent yesterday. She said she would figure out a way to get Nina back."I patted my shoulder, signaling Lisa to massage it. I then asked, "What way?"The person replied, "She said she'll ask for your help, Mrs. Conte."Hearing that, I chuckled."It seems that Nina's mother is smarter than she is."The next day, Celeste came to visit me.I didn't keep her waiting and agreed to see her.She wore a smile, but the jealousy and desperation in her eyes were imp

On the day of the wedding, the Conte family's convoy drove through nearly half of Balthor before finally stopping in front of the Farro residence to pick me up.The sheer scale of it left everyone in awe and envy. One spectator commented, "I wonder how Stella Farro got so lucky. I heard that she's just an illegitimate daughter." Someone who had gotten news replied, "I heard Nina made Mr. Conte promise to give up all worldly desires before she would marry him. The Conte family was so angry that they almost called off the wedding. It was Stella who stepped in and offered herself."Another person sneered. "People keep saying that Nina is some kind of saint who doesn't care about worldly things. I think she's just ridiculous. The Farro family is barely holding on, and the Conte family was willing to save them. She should've grabbed onto that lifeline instead of acting all high and mighty."As the rumors spread, the spotless reputation Nina had always taken pride in began to crumble.

Lisa brought all the gifts back to my room.Everything was accounted for, except for that gown.Lisa took out a box and handed it to me."It's my fault for not finding out who she really was sooner. Fortunately, she didn't get her hands on anything else Mr. Conte had prepared. By the way, Mr. Conte bought some supplements recommended by Mr. Conte Senior for your mother."When I opened the box, I found a set of supplements that looked incredibly expensive. Feeling grateful, I gave her a nod."Please thank him and Mrs. Conte Senior on my behalf."The next day, the Conte family sent their people over again. They brought the clothes Tristan had promised the day before, all from brands under the Conte family's name. Every single piece was worth a fortune. There was also something for Nina."Mrs. Conte Senior has prepared a gift for Ms. Nina. She heard that Ms. Nina spends her days praying and living a quiet, disciplined life, so she personally picked out this rod of discipline fo

Nina swayed slightly, barely managing to keep herself on her feet. Disbelief filled her eyes.Even now, with the truth laid bare before her, she still couldn't believe that Tristan wanted to marry me, an illegitimate daughter.Celeste's face was ashen, while Saul apologized profusely, "Mr. Conte, this is all a misunderstanding. A complete misunderstanding! We didn't know the truth that day, so we got the wrong idea and mistakenly thought everything was meant for Nina."Tristan let out a cold snort."A misunderstanding? I wouldn't be so sure. That dress Nina is wearing looks awfully familiar. If I'm not mistaken, it's the one I personally picked out for Stella. Doesn't it feel a little too tight on you?"Nina's expression darkened further. She had assumed that Tristan didn't know her size and bought her a dress that was too small. Never in her wildest dream did she expect that…Flustered, Celeste explained hurriedly, "Mr. Conte, it was all my fault. Nina had no idea about this.

Hearing that, the Farros were dumbfounded. They had no idea what Tristan meant by that.Nina was standing right here. Who else could Tristan's future wife be?Caught off guard, Leo fumbled for the marriage contract and read it again."Your future wife is the second daughter of the Farro family, Stella Farro. That's what the contract states. There's no mistake about it. I told the household staff at the gate to make sure that Ms. Stella Farro was here. Uh…"What Leo didn't know was that the staff had delivered the message to Celeste correctly, but she'd instinctively assumed that they had misheard him. After all, there was only one daughter in the Farro family—her own flesh and blood, Nina.Leo had never met me, so naturally, he wouldn't be able to tell which one of us was Stella Farro.Nina's expression darkened on the spot, her usual calm composure gone."What? You want to marry Stella?"Saul jumped up frantically and quickly urged a maid, "Quick, call Stella and get her to c

Saul wiped the cold sweat off his forehead and flashed a placating smile while nodding vehemently.Meanwhile, Celeste smiled and stepped in to smooth things over."You're right, Mr. Smith. She may be a little spoiled and willful, but fortunately, Mr. Conte is generous enough to give her another chance. I'll be sure to talk some sense into her. She can't keep acting spoiled."Leo let out a cold snort and motioned for the female assistant beside him to step forward."This is Lisa Pratico. Mrs. Conte Senior instructed me to bring her here for Ms. Farro. Feel free to ask for her help regarding anything."After Leo left, Celeste excitedly instructed the household staff to bring the gifts and Lisa to Nina.Yet, Saul seemed hesitant."I couldn't help but think that the Conte family wasn't talking about Nina, but rather…"He couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The daughter he supposedly raised well, mentioned by Leo, didn't seem to be Nina, as she was adamant about calli
