Chapter 1

Author: Bright Lights
When Diane Settle, my wife, saw that I was serious about calling the police, she quickly grabbed my hand and tried to talk me down.

“Honey, calm down. Let’s talk this out. There’s no need to blow this out of proportion. If word of this gets out, it won’t just embarrass you and me. Christopher will be humiliated too.”

I snapped at her furiously.

“He tried to pawn off that useless daughter of his on my brilliant Christopher, and now, he’s stolen from us. If anyone is going to be humiliated, it’s him.”

Cal Pinkham did not like that. He raised his voice and started shouting.

“A PhD student like Christopher has spent so much time buried in books that his brain has turned to sawdust. That man has no charm at all. With what he has to offer, nobody on the dating market would want him. I was doing you a favor.

“I only introduced my wonderful daughter to your family because you’re been treating me well over the years. Yet here you are, blind as a bat, looking down on Becky like your son is too good for her.

“Let me tell you something. You shouldn’t look down on a butler’s daughter. A woman from my hometown works as a housekeeper, and her daughter is a bank president. Becky is just a late bloomer. When she comes into her own, she’ll be so amazing it’ll blow you away!”

I actually laughed.

“A late bloomer? She’s forty years old and halfway to the grave. What is she waiting for, retirement? At this rate, the only thing that will finally bloom is the mold on her headstone. Well, that would blow me away, all right.”

Cal had worked for our family for years. He was always going on about his brilliant daughter. Every other word out of his mouth had something to do with “Becky”.

One day, he said he was worried Becky could not take care of herself at home alone and asked if he could bring her over for a while.

He assured me repeatedly that Becky would just play her games quietly and not cause any trouble.

I assumed he had fathered a daughter late in life and had thought she was just a child, so I agreed.

That day, I even went out of my way to buy snacks that kids liked. However, when Cal walked in with his daughter, I realized she was not a little girl at all, but a five-foot-three, two-hundred-pound, forty-year-old grown woman.

After asking around, I learned that Becky had dropped out in eighth grade and never went back, choosing video games over school. She had been spoiled rotten her whole life. Forget holding down a job, at forty years old, she could not even scramble an egg. When she got hungry, she would just eat a sleeve of crackers.

Her family was also flat broke. Her mother had a gambling problem. Every now and then, they had to move again to keep the debt collectors from showing up at their door.

He claimed that everything had been nothing more than a misunderstanding between two young lovers. Many people did not believe it, but the rumors still spread and caused some degree of harm to Christopher’s reputation.Christopher and I talked about it. First, we sued them for defamation. Then, I hired someone to track down the address of their current rental and passed it along to their creditors. The debt collectors showed up at their door, stripped the house of everything valuable, and took the last bit of cash they had. They also beat Cal and Becky badly.Unable to pay the rent, Cal was forced to move with Becky into an even more dilapidated place. To survive, Cal had no choice but to keep looking for work.He could no longer find an easy butler job, so he had to take whatever hard manual labor he could get. When Becky got hungry at home, Cal could not take time off work to go back, so he had no choice but to have her make boxed mac and cheese by herself.“Becky, list

As for why she had targeted my son, it was because she wanted to destroy his life by trapping him in a terrible marriage, so that she and her secret son could sit back and reap the benefits.Everyone else was stunned. None of them had expected Diane to be so vicious. They finally realized that the real problem in my family had started from within.Diane held the photos in her hands. Her face was as pale as paper.“Honey, listen to me. It’s not what you think. These are fake. None of this is real.”I waved the security guards over and told them to remove her.“Argue all you want. From now on, you’re no wife of mine, and you have no right to call yourself my son’s mother.”I threw both her and Cal out. Then, I froze every account she had access to.I took her to court and filed for divorce.I hired the best lawyer I could find to handle everything for me. With all the evidence in order, I made sure she left with nothing. I also demanded compensation for all the money she had

I did not rush to argue. I waited until everyone had finished talking and the crowd had quieted down before I spoke again.“You know very well why I mocked your daughter. You were hired as a butler, yet instead of doing your job, all you could think about was getting my brilliant doctoral-student son to marry your forty-year-old, good-for-nothing daughter.“When Christopher came home, you took it upon yourself to replace his beer with plain water and said drinking too much would ruin his sperm count and make him unable to have children. You said your family wanted at least three kids.“When Christopher showed me the new shoes he bought, you said men who care about clothes and shoes are girlie divas.“When Christopher brought me souvenirs from his travels, you told him not to waste money because every dollar he spent belonged to his future wife.”The onlookers were utterly stunned. The people who had spoken up for Cal earlier were at a loss for words.“No wonder his employer was

However, after everything he had been put through, Christopher had suffered a great deal. His face was still as pale as a sheet. On the way there, I wrestled with whether I should tell him the truth. In the end, I decided to lay everything out and hear his opinion. After all, Christopher was an adult. He was also the victim. He had every right to know what had happened.I tried to keep my voice calm as I recounted the entire sequence of events from beginning to end. Christopher’s expression darkened. His brows furrowed tightly. After I finished, his expression relaxed. He held my hand and said firmly, “I support you in seeing this through to the end. You don’t need to feel bad. We weren’t the ones who did wrong. Even if people start saying ugly things, the shame is theirs, not ours. We’re the victims. We shouldn’t feel ashamed just because we were hurt.”After saying that, he paused for a moment.“I don’t care what happens to them. But Dad, what are you going to do about her?”

“Drugged him? How could I possibly do that? He’s my son. I’d never drug my son.”Cal shook his head frantically too.“Nonsense! This is all a misunderstanding!”Becky, however, was too stupid to know better. The police barely had to ask before she confessed to everything.“Yeah, Dad was the one who drugged Christopher. He said that whoever I set my eyes on, he would make sure I got them. But he lied to me. Christopher wasn’t even in the room. I don’t want to stay here. I want to see him. I want to sleep with him and have his babies!”Panic filled Cal’s face. He lunged forward and tried to cover Becky’s mouth.“That’s not what happened. These kids love each other. It was consensual.”I could not hold back my fury and cursed aloud, “Consensual? Christopher doesn’t even know your useless daughter. What kind of consent could there possibly be? Besides, if it was consensual, why would you need to drug him? You clearly had your eye on my family’s money, so you kept harassing Christoph

Diane’s expression darkened.“You really called the police? Have you even thought about what happens if you make this into a public spectacle and all the neighbors find out? How is Christopher ever supposed to hold his head up again?”I snapped at her furiously.“His own mother worked with outsiders to drug her son. If anyone should be too ashamed to face people, it’s you.”Diane quickly composed herself and put on an expression, as if everything she had done had been for Christopher’s sake.“I was only worried that our son would never find a wife. He refuses to go on dates or let anyone set him up. I simply got desperate and made a foolish mistake. Everything I did was for his own good. I love our son.”While we were still facing off, Becky had waddled her massive frame over to the bed. She yanked back the covers. When she saw that no one was on the bed, her mood instantly soured. She turned to Cal and shouted, “Dad, you lied to me! Christopher isn’t here. I want Christopher. I
