That night, Adrian felt suffocated being in the same room with Evelyn.

Despite it being their wedding night, he walked out without looking back.

He couldn’t explain why he couldn’t stand the thought of having Evelyn as his wife.

Yes, they had grown up together.

Yes, he knew she loved him.

But none of that mattered to him.

Adrian was never a man built to love. He had grown up without his parents — his mother had left his father the moment things started going downhill, and his father, seeing himself as a failure, abandoned him soon after.

Adrian had no choice but to grow up under the care of his grandmother, Mrs. Eleanor Chase.

Years later, word spread that his father had died, but Adrian never cared enough to find out the truth.

He had stopped believing in love or family long ago. His only focus was money — making so much of it that the world would bow at his feet. He wanted to prove to his mother that she was wrong for leaving him for wealth and to his father for giving up on him so easily.

So, for Adrian, accepting the marriage wasn’t about love. It was about building a stronger foundation for himself — and, above all, fulfilling his grandmother’s dying wish.

---

Evelyn thought he had simply stepped out of the bedroom for a moment.

But after waiting what felt like an eternity with no sign of Adrian, she went to his study to look for him.

The light in the study was dim, but there was no trace of him. She searched the living room and the downstairs hall — still nothing.

Feeling uneasy, Evelyn stepped outside to clear her head. Her feet led her unconsciously toward the garage, where she noticed something that made her heart sink — Adrian’s favorite sports car was gone.

That was when it dawned on her.

Adrian had left the house.

On their wedding night.

“Does he hate me that much?” Evelyn whispered to herself as tears slipped down her cheeks.

She returned to the house quietly, gathered her thoughts, and not wanting to disturb anyone, went into the kitchen to make herself a cup of warm milk. Afterward, she returned to their bedroom and lay down alone.

---

The next morning, Evelyn woke up early.

The other side of the bed was cold — a painful reminder that Adrian hadn’t come home all night.

Her heart stung, but she brushed it aside.

If she truly wanted to win his heart, she told herself, she had to learn to ignore the little hurts.

With that thought in mind, she freshened up and went downstairs to make breakfast — hoping, just hoping, that Adrian might come home for a meal.

“Good morning, Madam,” the butler greeted the moment he saw her descending the stairs.

“Hmm,” Evelyn murmured, barely glancing at him.

“It’s still very early, Madam,” the butler said gently. “Perhaps you should rest a little longer. If there’s anything you’d like to eat, please let me have the chef prepare it.”

“Don’t worry,” Evelyn said firmly. “I’ll be making breakfast from now on. The chef can assist me if needed.”

It was said that the way to a man’s heart was through his stomach — and Evelyn had already made up her mind during the long, lonely night.

She would give up her career and her own life for now. She would win Adrian’s heart.

After that, she could always pick up where she left off.

---

An hour later, Evelyn emerged from the kitchen with several dishes — all the meals she remembered Adrian loved.

By 6:30 a.m., she had finished setting the table. She changed into something neat and simple, her heart filled with quiet hope. Surely, Adrian would come home for breakfast.

Even if he planned to skip their honeymoon and return to work right away, he’d at least stop by to change his clothes.

At least that’s what she told herself.

But the hours passed.

Adrian didn’t return that morning.

Nor did he come home for lunch.

By evening, she sat and watched dinner grow cold — just like the morning meal.

“Madam, you should retire inside. You might catch a cold,” Butler Chan said softly as he approached the garden, where Evelyn sat on a swing cushion, waiting.

“Don’t worry about me,” she replied with quiet determination. “I’ll wait a little longer.”

“But it’s already past midnight,” he said gently, pity in his eyes. “I doubt the young master will return tonight.”

Evelyn didn’t respond. She simply stared into the night sky, lost in her thoughts.

Seeing that she wouldn’t listen, Butler Chan sighed and went back inside.

Evelyn remained outside until past one in the morning before finally gathering the strength to return to her empty room.

The moment Clara's car disappeared beyond the gates of the Chase Mansion, Adrian's warm smile vanished. His entire expression hardened. Pulling his phone from his pocket, he dialed a secure number. The call connected almost instantly. "She took the bait," Adrian said calmly, his voice carrying none of the warmth he had shown moments earlier. "Have the Shadow Claws on standby at all times. The moment the tracker is activated, they move."A dangerous glint flashed across his eyes. "There is no room for mistakes this time.""Understood, Boss." The call ended.Without missing a beat, Adrian turned toward Butler Chan, who had been quietly waiting nearby."Butler Chan.""Yes, Young Master.""Tell the chef to prepare Madam's favorite dishes."A small smile tugged at Adrian's lips. "She'll be staying here tonight.""Right away, Young Master."Butler Chan smiled knowingly before hurrying toward the kitchen.Adrian adjusted the cuffs of his shirt and made his way toward the staircase, his mood

Clara’s smile flickered. Just for a brief second.A crack in the perfect mask. Then it returned—smooth, practiced, harmless.“I hid it before,” she said quickly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear as though the question amused her rather than unsettled her. “I was in a hurry that day and couldn’t take much. That jewelry has always been my treasure, so I hardly wear it. I kept it hidden somewhere safe. I’m sure it’s still there.”Her tone was soft. Too soft.Butler Chan didn’t look convinced.“Still, ma’am, I—”“It’s okay, Chan.” Evelyn’s voice cut through gently. She stood a few steps behind Clara, her expression calm, almost too calm for someone who had just walked into a potentially suspicious situation.“If she says it’s here, let her go retrieve it.”Clara turned slightly. A smile returned to her lips.Grateful. Innocent. Familiar. “Thank you, Evie.”Then Evelyn added lightly, “Do you want me to come with you?”Clara shook her head. “No need. I’ll be back before you even not

“I’m so excited that I had to rush here,” Clara said brightly, leaning slightly forward as if she couldn’t contain herself. “Tell the guards to open the gate for me.”Evelyn paused for half a second. Then she smiled — gentle, controlled. “I’m already on my way out. I’m right in front of the gate too,” she replied smoothly.Almost instantly, the massive gates began to slide open with a heavy metallic groan. And there it was. Two women. Facing each other. One smiling too brightly. The other observing too carefully.“Sorry,” Evelyn said as Clara stepped closer. “I didn’t know you’d come all the way to the house.”Clara laughed lightly, stepping inside without hesitation. “I was just too excited. I’ve really missed spending time with just you and me.”Evelyn nodded and gently took her arm. “Come help me pick a car.”THE GARAGERows of luxury vehicles lined the expansive underground garage — sleek machines polished until they reflected light like mirrors. The air smelled faintly of leather

“What were you looking at?” she asked.“Nothing important.” he answered.Another lie. Evelyn sat beside him slowly, the mattress dipping slightly beneath her weight. The soft scent of vanilla and jasmine lingered around her, warm and comforting, yet Ethan felt even more guilty because of it.“What’s wrong?” she asked gently. The bedside lamp cast a soft amber glow across the room, illuminating Ethan’s pale face and the faint shadows beneath his eyes. Outside the tall glass windows, the night stretched endlessly over the Montgomery estate, quiet and still, but somehow the silence felt heavier tonight.Ethan looked away. He wanted to tell her everything. About the Black Circuit. About the files he had uncovered. About the people who disappeared after crossing them. About the bloodstained missions hidden beneath layers of encrypted reports. About the fear slowly settling inside his chest. But Adrian had asked him not to say anything. And worse— If Evelyn found out how dangerous things tr

Later that night, the Chase mansion was unusually quiet. The massive estate, normally alive with movement from guards, servants, and security personnel, had settled into an eerie silence. Outside, the city lights shimmered faintly beyond the towering glass windows of Adrian’s private study. The faint hum of distant traffic blended with the soft ticking of the antique clock hanging against the dark wooden wall.Inside the study, only the glow from Adrian’s laptop illuminated the room. He sat comfortably behind his desk, sleeves rolled slightly above his wrists, one hand lazily supporting his chin while the other moved across the keyboard. Several unfinished documents were spread neatly across the polished mahogany table, yet his attention had long drifted away from work. For the first time in weeks… maybe months… Adrian was genuinely in a good mood. A dangerous thing. Because whenever Evelyn managed to soften him, he became careless emotionally. And tonight, his mind had completely aba

“Ady?!”Evelyn’s sharp voice echoed through the underground parking lot.“What the hell are you doing here?” she demanded as she marched toward him in irritation, the sound of her heels striking the concrete floor sharply. The parking lot was cool and dimly lit, with rows of luxury cars lined neatly beneath flickering white lights. The air smelled faintly of gasoline and polished metal, and every sound seemed amplified in the near-empty space.Adrian, however, looked completely unbothered.Leaning casually against a sleek black car with one hand tucked into his pocket, he simply smiled at her like he hadn’t a care in the world.“Going out to have lunch with my wife,” he replied lazily. “What does it look like?”Evelyn stopped directly in front of him and glared.“This is not funny.”“I know,” Adrian answered with a soft chuckle. “But come on, what’s the big deal? It’s just lunch.”“It’s supposed to be between Clara and me,” Evelyn stressed, lowering her voice slightly even though nobo
