Adrian left his villa that night and headed to his office.

He had created a private space there that looked almost like a bedroom — a study corner, a sizable bed, a wardrobe, and even a small wine cellar. It was his safe space — the place he escaped to whenever his grandmother’s nagging became unbearable or when he was too tired to return home. Sometimes, he spent weeks there without setting foot in his house.

That night, he came straight here after leaving home on his wedding night. He felt deeply uncomfortable sharing the same space with Evelyn, his new wife — though he couldn’t quite explain why.

He remembered growing up with her, spending most of their childhood side by side. He had always protected Evelyn, almost like an older brother. At first, it was because his grandmother had asked him to look after Evelyn and Isabella. But over time, it became a habit — an instinct. His protectiveness grew so strong that people began to whisper he might be obsessed with her.

So, what went wrong?

It had started when Evelyn fell in love with him. She tried to keep her feelings secret — only Isabella knew — until she confided in her best friend, Clara. Not long after, rumors about Evelyn’s feelings began to spread around school.

Adrian heard the gossip and confronted her. She wanted to deny it desperately, but she couldn’t lie — not to him, not to herself. So she admitted it. From that day onward, Adrian avoided her like a plague.

That was exactly what Evelyn had feared. She’d known he would withdraw the moment he found out.

Evelyn later confronted Clara about leaking her secret, but Clara denied it, claiming Isabella must have told her friend Joyce. Furious, Isabella confronted Joyce, who insisted it was Isabella who had told her — and even had an audio recording to prove it.

Isabella was confused. She didn’t remember sending anything like that.

> “I didn’t do it, Evie. I promise you, I didn’t. Why would I ruin your chances with Adrian when I know how much you care about him?”

But Evelyn didn’t believe her.

> “Then how did your best friend get that audio, Isa? It’s clearly your voice! Isn’t it?”

Evelyn’s voice trembled with anger, disappointment, and betrayal.

Adrian had known about all of this. Ever since that incident, his relationship with Evelyn had become strained. They exchanged polite greetings when they met, but nothing more. It wasn’t hatred — it was distance.

Still, this new feeling inside him was different. It wasn’t hate, nor disgust. It was fear.

Fear of awakening something buried deep inside him — something he didn’t want to face.

Because deep down, he knew Evelyn mattered more to him than anyone else in the world. Apart from his grandmother, she was the only person who held a special place in his heart.

But he refused to accept it.

He couldn’t.

He wouldn’t.

He didn’t want to hold anyone close — especially not a woman.

He told himself staying away would keep his heart safe, that distance was the only way to silence the feelings she unknowingly stirred within him. Yet, every night he spent outside those walls, his thoughts wandered back to her — the gentle curve of her smile, the patience in her voice, the warmth he pretended not to crave. Adrian had built his life on control, on locking away the parts of him that could break. But with every breath, every heartbeat that whispered her name, he realized the cruel truth — every distance he created only drew him closer to her.

“What were you looking at?” she asked.“Nothing important.” he answered.Another lie. Evelyn sat beside him slowly, the mattress dipping slightly beneath her weight. The soft scent of vanilla and jasmine lingered around her, warm and comforting, yet Ethan felt even more guilty because of it.“What’s wrong?” she asked gently. The bedside lamp cast a soft amber glow across the room, illuminating Ethan’s pale face and the faint shadows beneath his eyes. Outside the tall glass windows, the night stretched endlessly over the Montgomery estate, quiet and still, but somehow the silence felt heavier tonight.Ethan looked away. He wanted to tell her everything. About the Black Circuit. About the files he had uncovered. About the people who disappeared after crossing them. About the bloodstained missions hidden beneath layers of encrypted reports. About the fear slowly settling inside his chest. But Adrian had asked him not to say anything. And worse— If Evelyn found out how dangerous things tr

Later that night, the Chase mansion was unusually quiet. The massive estate, normally alive with movement from guards, servants, and security personnel, had settled into an eerie silence. Outside, the city lights shimmered faintly beyond the towering glass windows of Adrian’s private study. The faint hum of distant traffic blended with the soft ticking of the antique clock hanging against the dark wooden wall.Inside the study, only the glow from Adrian’s laptop illuminated the room. He sat comfortably behind his desk, sleeves rolled slightly above his wrists, one hand lazily supporting his chin while the other moved across the keyboard. Several unfinished documents were spread neatly across the polished mahogany table, yet his attention had long drifted away from work. For the first time in weeks… maybe months… Adrian was genuinely in a good mood. A dangerous thing. Because whenever Evelyn managed to soften him, he became careless emotionally. And tonight, his mind had completely aba

Two weeks passed in what felt like the blink of an eye.Yet despite the passage of time, the internet was still in chaos over Scarlett’s true identity. Every major fashion blog, entertainment page, and media outlet in Lincoln City continued buzzing with speculation about the mysterious designer who had shocked the industry with her return. But Evelyn barely paid attention anymore.Ever since Ethan’s kidnapping and the attack on her family, the glamorous world of fashion had begun to feel distant compared to the terrifying reality surrounding the people she loved most.Nothing mattered more than keeping her children alive. That morning, the entire Montgomery family gathered around the long dining table for breakfast. Warm sunlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing the elegant dining room in soft golden light. The aroma of freshly baked bread, pancakes, coffee, and fried bacon filled the air, creating a peaceful atmosphere that contrasted sharply with the tension li

“Evie?”Mrs. Montgomery’s voice carried quiet suspicion as she looked across the dining table at her daughter. The warmth from dinner still lingered in the air, but the atmosphere had subtly changed after Ethan’s accidental conversation with Adrian. The older woman narrowed her eyes slightly.“What exactly are you up to this time?”Evelyn nearly sighed.Of course her mother noticed.Mrs. Montgomery had always been frighteningly observant when it came to her children. No matter how carefully Evelyn tried to hide things, her mother somehow sensed when trouble was nearby.“It’s really nothing, Mom,” Evelyn replied smoothly, forcing a small smile. “Do you honestly think I’d lie to you?”Mrs. Montgomery didn’t answer immediately.Instead, she studied Evelyn carefully, as though trying to peel apart every layer hiding beneath her calm expression. Before she could respond, Mr. Montgomery spoke instead.“Whatever this is,” he said firmly, setting down his cutlery, “I hope you’re not putting y
