Alex arrived back in the conference room at exactly 6:58 p.m. carrying a slim laptop and a folder thick with printouts. The Meridian campaign files had been a mess. They had deliberately been made to look good. Had major issues that could sink the whole division. He had spent the afternoon going through them fueled by irritation and the memory of Rowans hand on his wrist.

The door to Rowans office was open. Alex knocked once. Entered without waiting.

Rowan sat behind his desk looking at something on a monitor. The city lights shone behind him through the glass wall. He did not look up away. "You are two minutes early. Trying to impress me Rivera?"

"Trying to get this over with " Alex said. He placed the laptop on the table and opened the presentation. "The campaign has three problems. I marked them all."

Rowan finally looked up. His gray eyes had the focus from the morning but something had changed. A faint shadow of tiredness maybe.. Calculation. He. Walked around the desk stopping closer than professional distance allowed.

"Show me."

Alex clicked through the slides. His voice stayed steady as he detailed the problems. Every point landed sharp. He refused to soften any of it.

When he finished silence filled the room. Rowan leaned against the table edge arms crossed, studying the slide.

"You tore it to pieces " Rowan said quietly. "Most analysts would have softened the language. Tried to protect themselves."

"I was hired to deliver results " Alex replied. "Not stroke egos."

Rowans lips curved into a humorless smile. "Be careful. That attitude could get you removed."

"Or it could save your company money and reputation " Alex said. Their eyes met again. The air between them thickened.

Rowan moved. Not sudden,. Deliberate. He reached past Alex to tap the keyboard bringing up a document. Their shoulders brushed. Alex did not step back.

"You missed one thing " Rowan murmured. His breath carried warmth against Alexs ear. "The leak."

Alex turned his head. Their faces were too close. "What leak?"

Rowan. Kept the distance minimal. "Internal documents from this campaign appeared on a competitors server three days ago. Someone inside Vale Tower is selling us out. I thought it might be you."

The accusation hit like water. Alexs temper flared. "I started today. You really believe I had time to copy files and sell them before my coffee?"

"I believe everyone is capable of betrayal until proven otherwise " Rowan said. His eyes darkened. "Your background check showed some gaps. Family debts. A father who disappeared after owing people. You needed this job badly."

Alexs hands clenched at his sides. The mention of his father stung. "Digging into my past already? That's low."

"Necessary " Rowan corrected. He circled the table slowly watching Alex. "Tell me why I should trust you with anything beyond tasks."

"Because I just handed you fixes that could save millions " Alex shot back. ". Because if I were the mole I would not have spent twelve hours exposing the flaws."

Rowan stopped behind him. Alex felt the mans presence like heat on his back. "Turn around."

Alex did, slowly. Defiance burned in his chest. So did something else. A pull. A curiosity about what lay beneath Rowans control.

Their bodies nearly touched. Rowans voice dropped. "You look at me like you want to hit me.. Something else."

Heat rushed to Alexs face. "You're imagining things."

"Am I?" Rowans hand came up fingers hovering near Alexs tie. "In the garage earlier you did not pull away immediately. Your pulse jumped under my fingers."

Alex swallowed. The memory flashed vivid. "That was adrenaline. Anger."

"Lie to yourself if you want " Rowan said. His gaze dropped to Alexs mouth. ". Do not lie to me. I own this building. I own the contracts. Now I could end your employment with one call."

The threat should have terrified Alex. Instead it ignited fury and a spark. He stepped forward until their chests almost brushed. "Then do it.. Stop playing these games and let me work."

Rowans control flickered. For a second his breathing changed. His hand finally made contact fingers gripping Alexs tie and pulling him forward. Their lips hovered close.

"You test every limit " Rowan whispered. The words carried hunger and warning.

Alexs heart hammered. He could smell Rowans cologne feel the heat of his body. Part of him wanted to shove the man. Another part wondered what those lips would feel like.

The intercom on Rowans desk buzzed. "Mr. Vale Victor is here. He says it is urgent. About the Meridian leak."

Rowan released the tie slowly. He stepped back mask of authority sliding back into place. "Send him in." He glanced at Alex. "We are not finished. Stay."

Victor Hale entered. Tall sharp-featured, with a smile that never reached his eyes. He was Rowans vice president.

"Rivera " Victor said, nodding once. His gaze flicked between them. "Already in the sanctum? Fast work."

"What do you have?" Rowan demanded.

Victor placed a tablet on the table. "The leaked files trace back to this floor. Someone accessed them using a passcode. I narrowed it to three possibilities. One of them is the hires temporary credentials."

Alexs stomach tightened. "I did not even have access until this morning."

"Convenient story " Victor replied. ". Records show otherwise."

Rowans expression hardened. He studied the tablet then looked at Alex with suspicion. "Explain."

"I cannot explain something I did not do " Alex said, voice rising. "This feels like a setup."

Victor chuckled softly. "He has fire. I see why you called him up here Rowan."

"Enough " Rowan said. "Victor leave us. Dig deeper. I want every login, every camera angle. No assumptions."

Victor hesitated, then nodded and left.

Alone again Rowan turned on Alex. "If you are playing me I will destroy you."

"I am not " Alex said fiercely. He moved closer. ". Keep accusing me and I might start wishing I was the one selling you out."

Rowan grabbed Alexs arm pulling him against the desk. Their bodies pressed together. Alex could feel the line of muscle beneath the suit.

"You have no idea what you are walking into " Rowan said, voice rough. "This company is not business. It is a cage.. I am both prisoner and warden."

The confession slipped out small but real. Alex caught the flash of something haunted in Rowans eyes.

"Then why lock everyone inside with you?" Alex asked, quieter.

Rowans answer came as a kiss, sudden and punishing. No softness. Just. Months of suppressed need. Alex froze for half a second then kissed back with force.

It was not gentle. Teeth grazed lips. Fingers dug into fabric. When they broke apart both were breathing hard.

Rowan rested his forehead against Alexs. "This changes nothing, about the leak.. My rules."

"Rules " Alex repeated bitterly. "You break them the moment it suits you."

A knock sounded. Another assistant. "Sir the board just called an emergency meeting. They heard about the leak."

Rowan pulled away completely straightening his tie. The mask returned instantly. "We continue this tomorrow. Go home Rivera.. Do not speak of what just happened."

Alex got his stuff together his legs felt shaky. At the door he. Said, "I am not your enemy, Vale.. If you treat me like one I might become that.”

He left without looking. In the elevator his phone buzzed with a message from a number he did not know.

*Careful who you kiss in that tower. Some cages have cameras. Welcome to the game.*

Alex felt a chill run down his spine. He deleted the message. The words stuck in his mind. Someone was watching him. Someone already knew what he had done.

Back in his apartment across town Alex poured himself a drink and looked out at the city. His lips still felt funny. He had a lot of questions. Rowan Vale was more than a boss who was hard to deal with. He was broken.. Whatever secret he was hiding was starting to pull Alex in too.

Miles away Rowan was alone in his office watching a video of their kiss on the security feed. He touched his mouth. For the time in years he felt like the ice, around him was starting to melt.

  • The Cage Between Us    You Don't Know Rowan at all

The words echoed in Alex’s mind like a persistent whisper that refused to fade. *You don't know Rowan at all.* Elias had said them with such calm certainty during their warehouse meeting, his eyes gleaming with the confidence of someone who believed he held all the cards. Alex sat on the edge of the bed in the penthouse the next morning, staring at the city skyline through the windows while Rowan slept beside him. The man’s arm was still draped possessively across his waist, breath warm against his back, but the peace Alex had felt after their emotional reunion now felt fragile, cracked by the seeds of doubt Elias had so expertly planted. He slipped out of bed carefully, not wanting to wake Rowan yet. The kitchen offered no comfort as he made coffee, the routine movements doing little to silence the voice in his head. Elias had laid out dates, names, connections that aligned too neatly with what Marcus had shared. Julian’s disappearance. The offshore accounts. The way Rowan had allege

  • The Cage Between Us    The Ghost In The Mirror

The video from Elias had changed everything. The confirmation that his brother was alive — not just surviving but actively orchestrating years of sabotage — had left Rowan in a state of controlled fury mixed with profound grief. Alex watched him pace the penthouse living room the next morning, the man’s usual commanding presence fractured by the weight of the revelation. They had barely slept, the "I need you" from the previous days now carrying new urgency in the face of the ghost stepping fully into the light."You should not go alone," Rowan said for the third time, stopping in front of Alex. His gray eyes were haunted, the scar above his eyebrow standing out against pale skin. "He is dangerous. He took you once already."Alex stood from the couch and caught Rowan’s hands, holding them steady. The love between them felt forged in fire now, stronger after the separation, the kidnapping, and Rowan’s complete collapse. "He asked for me specifically. If I do not go, he will escalate. W

  • The Cage Between Us    The Ghost Unveiled

The boardroom on the top floor of Vale Tower felt like a pressure cooker ready to explode. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the long mahogany table where twelve men and women sat with faces carved from stone. Victor Hale occupied the seat to the right of the chairman, his smile sharp and satisfied. Rowan stood at the head of the table, shoulders squared, but Alex could see the faint tremor in his hands from where he watched through the glass wall of the adjacent observation lounge. The investigation into Rowan’s leadership had reached its climax, and the room crackled with the kind of tension that preceded executions.Alex’s heart pounded against his ribs. The last few days since the kidnapping and Rowan’s complete collapse had been a whirlwind of healing and preparation. They had spent nearly every waking moment together, secret meetings turning into open strategy sessions, late-night conversations evolving into shared dreams of a future beyond the

  • The Cage Between Us    First "I Need You"**

The afternoon light filtered through the penthouse windows, casting long golden beams across the master bedroom floor. Alex lay on his side, watching Rowan sleep. The man looked younger in repose, the harsh lines of constant control softened by exhaustion and the emotional purge of the previous night. Dark circles still lingered under his eyes from the twelve-hour search, but his breathing was deep and even, one arm thrown possessively across Alex’s waist even in sleep. Alex traced a gentle finger along Rowan’s jaw, feeling the faint stubble, the scar above his eyebrow, the warmth of skin that had become his anchor in this storm. The realization from the park bench and the long night afterward had settled deep into Alex’s bones. Rowan had completely broken for him. Not the controlled fractures of past arguments, but a total collapse — searching the city like a man possessed, crying alone in his car, kneeling in a dirty warehouse beside an empty chair. That level of devotion, raw and u

  • The Cage Between Us    Realization

The grass in the small park was damp with morning dew, but neither man cared. Rowan knelt before Alex on the bench, arms locked around his waist as if the world might rip him away again at any second. Alex held on just as tightly, fingers buried in Rowan’s dark hair, breathing in the familiar scent of cologne mixed with sweat and exhaustion. The sun had barely risen, painting the sky in soft pinks and golds, but the moment felt suspended outside of time."You searched for twelve hours," Alex whispered, voice thick with emotion. He pulled back just enough to see Rowan’s face. The man looked wrecked — eyes bloodshot and swollen from crying, knuckles raw and bruised, clothes rumpled from a night of frantic movement. This was not the controlled CEO who had commanded his body and heart for months. This was Rowan stripped bare, and the sight made Alex’s chest ache with overwhelming love and realization.Rowan nodded, not trusting his voice at first. His hands trembled as they cupped Alex’s

  • The Cage Between Us    Twelve Hours of hell

Rowan Vale had not slept in thirty-six hours. The moment Alex’s text stopped replying and the tracking on his phone went dark, something primal inside him snapped. The board investigation, Victor’s smirking face in the hallway, Elias’s latest taunting message — all of it faded into white noise. Only one thing mattered: Alex was gone.He started in the penthouse, tearing through rooms with methodical fury. The guest bedroom where Alex had slept during their silence. The couch where they had held each other after the debt fight. The kitchen island still bearing faint marks from their passionate nights. Every corner screamed absence. Rowan’s hands shook as he checked the security feeds, rewinding to the moment Alex left the tower via the side exit. The alley camera showed the black van. The struggle. The cloth over Alex’s mouth. Then nothing."Twelve hours," Rowan muttered to the empty room, voice cracking. "I have twelve hours before I burn this city down."He called every contact in hi

  • The Cage Between Us    Genuine Touch

The weight of what happened the night before still felt heavy in the penthouse like the fog that covers the city in the morning. Alex woke up to the light of dawn coming through the windows with Rowans arm wrapped around his waist. He just lay there for a time listening to Rowans steady breathing f

  • The Cage Between Us    Silent Debts

This thing inside me just kept growing taking over every moment and thought. Alex and I had fallen into a rhythm of stolen moments. Mornings started with texts and secret meetings. • The Cage Between Us    Entwined Fates

The obsession had evolved into something sacred and destructive, a living force that dictated their every decision. Alex no longer remembered what it felt like to go a full day without Rowan’s touch. The secret meetings had multiplied, each one more daring than the last. The possessive tension betw
